• Update Since Microsoft/PSC Office Open XML Case Study

  In 2009 Microsoft released a case study about a project that we had done using the OOXML SDK 1.0 for Research Directors Inc.  Since that time Microsoft has released version 2.0 of the SDK and PSC has done significant development with it.  Below are some of the mile stones we have reached since the original case study. At the time of the original case study two report types had been automated to output as PowerPoint presentations.  Now that the all the main products have been delivered we have added three reports with Word document outputs and five more reports with PowerPoint outputs. One improvement we made over the original application was to create a PowerPoint Add-In which allows the users to tag a slide.  These tags along with the strongly typed SDK 2.0 allows for the code to use LINQ to easily search for slides in the template files.  This allows for a more flexible architecture base on assembling a presentation from copied slide extracted from the template. The new library we created also enabled us to create two new Word based reports in two weeks.  The library we created abstracts the generation of the documents from the business logic and the data retrieval.  The key to this is the mark up.  Content Controls are a good method for identifying sections of a template to be modified or replaced.  Join this with the concept of all data being generically either scalar or two dimensional and the code becomes more generic. • What is a better language to use when building a database: Visual C# or Visual Basic (VB.net)? [on hold]

  I'm building a GUI and a database which is using SQL as a server (internal database not a web application). Which language is more of a "right tool" when it comes to building a not very structurally complicated database? What are the advantages and disadvantages of Visual C# / VB.net? I've been reading a lot of stuff online and they said that VB.net is not as capable and it doesn't have as much support as Visual C#, and it seems that VB.net is on a decline in terms of popularity.

• Reasonable Location to Install Web Service on Server

  Firstly, I'm a software developer and not qualified as any kind of system or server expert so I'm looking for advice in order to help me prevent faults on our server. I've written a modular system to carry out certain tasks for us autonomously to prevent us from writing the same old code over and over again. This consists of a Windows Service (.NET), a Web Service (WCF), a shared Class Library, and a Database which will run on a Windows Server 2003. The problem comes, for me, in deployment. Specifically the web service - naturally the local service (and required shared library) are persisted (by default and convention) in the Program Files folder, but storing the web service here just seems absurd to me (even though we'd lock it down to appropriate use only). Should the files be stored some place else all together? Or split them up and store the web service elsewhere?

• Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime error when viewing JPEG files in Explorer

  I am getting the following error each time I view JPG files in the windows explorer in Detailed view. Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Assertion failed! Program: C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE File: multimedia\photos\metadatahandler\util.cpp Line: 4706 Expression: MinutesFraction < 1.0 For information on how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on asserts (Press Retry to debug the application - JIT must be enabled) These pictures were taken from a Nikon Coolpix AW110 camera. I think it is related to some EXIF data that is a date/time. I have tried reinstalling the Visual C++ 2013 and 2008 Run time library and restarting and the problem is still there. • Why is mcrypt not included in most Linux distributions?

  libmcrypt is a powerful encryption library that is very popular with PHP-based applications. However, most Linux distributions do not include it. This causes problems for many users that need to download and compile it separately. I am guessing that the reason it is not shipped is related to encryption or patent issues. However, the source code for library itself is hosted and available on sourceforge.net I have been searching unsuccessfully for a document of authoritative post that explains the exact issues why this extension is not bundled with mainstream distributions. Can anyone provide a pointer to such material or provide an explanation?

• MacOS X 10.6 Portable Home Directory sync fails due to FileSync agent crashing

  On one of our cleanly installed MacPro machines running MacOS X 10.6.6 connected to our MacOS X 10.6.6 Server, syncing data using Portable Home Directories fails. It seems to be due to the filesync agent crashing during the home sync. We get -41 and -8026 errors, which we are suspecting are indicating that there is too much data or filesync agent can't read the files. • How to install rgdal on Ubuntu 12.10?

  I'm strugling to install rgdal library on Ubuntu 12.10. Installation from within R results in error: Error: gdal-config not found The gdal-config script distributed with GDAL could not be found. If you have not installed the GDAL libraries, you can download the source from http://www.gdal.org/ If you have installed the GDAL libraries, then make sure that gdal-config is in your path. Try typing gdal-config at a shell prompt and see if it runs. If not, use: --configure-args='--with-gdal-config=/usr/local/bin/gdal-config' with appropriate values for your installation. ERROR: configuration failed for package ‘rgdal’ * removing ‘/home/rdk/R/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-library/2.15/rgdal’ Warning in install.packages : installation of package ‘rgdal’ had non-zero exit status R-sig-Geo, this two SE questions and other websites pointed me to the requirements of libgdal1-dev.   I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my acer netbook D255E, its currently running a crucial SSD 256G 500read 333write and a 2G RAM card with the crappy Intel Atom processor. i'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I cant get the system to even acknowledge I plugged the Arduino Uno microcontroller connected to the USB port. can anyone offer a solution to this, I've read up on a few how-tos online on my desktop but they're all for older versions of ubuntu.

The same can be said for e-commerce and your website. Being able to quickly convert shoppers into buyers with effective merchandising is what makes leading businesses successful. You want to engage each individual visitor with the most-relevant content to drive higher conversions and order values while decreasing abandonment, but predicting what will resonate with each customer is difficult. In a world of choices, online merchandizing tools can help personalize, streamline, and refine what your customers view when they browse your online catalog. The key to being effective is to align your products and content as closely as possible with the customer’s needs. The goal on the home page is to promote your brand and push visitors farther into the site. The home page is often the starting point for repeat customers as well as for new visitors hoping to address their current product needs.
