• Using Subversion in Xcode

  It seems that all of the initial Google results for "using subversion with xcode" are actually just tutorials for installing and configuring svn and Xcode, as opposed to actually using the two (i.e. interacting with svn via Xcode's GUI). Is anyone aware of a good guide that teaches the tricks and pitfalls of working with svn via Xcode's GUI? Something that bridges the gap between the most excellent Version Control with Subversion book and the Xcode IDE (as in pure Xcode GUI without any terminal command use)? Edit: We all love our terminal commands, and we all love Eclipse but (and I mean this in the nicest possible way) neither is really the point of the question. I’d prefer to use svn via Xcode’s IDE instead of via terminal just as I prefer (well, for this case) to code in Xcode’s IDE instead of using vim and gcc. Apple engineers spent a good bit of time implementing that SCM menu in Xcode; someone has to have seen a usage guide somewhere.

• SQL Server 2005 Error 701 - out of memory

  I'm currently having following error message when executing a .sql file with about 26MB on SQL Server 2005: Msg 701, Level 17, State 123 There is insufficient system memory to run this query. I'm working with 4GB RAM, 64Bit Windows 7 Ultimate, Core2Duo T6400(2GHz)... Is there a way to execute it without receiving this message (maybe force SQL Server to use swap file?) or a way to execute it in parts (like 100 queries a time)... The file is basically a CREATE TABLE followed by thousads of INSERT queries and I have a lot of those (converted .DBF files to SQL queries using ABC DBF Converter) Any idea will be very appreciated!

The incoming message needs to be logged for debug inspection. • Faster projected-norm (quadratic-form, metric-matrix...) style computations

  I need to perform lots of evaluations of the form X(:,i)' * A * X(:,i) i = 1...n where X(:,i) is a vector and A is a symmetric matrix. Ostensibly, I can either do this in a loop for i=1:n z(i) = X(:,i)' * A * X(:,i) end which is slow, or vectorise it as z = diag(X' * A * X) which wastes RAM unacceptably when X has a lot of columns. Currently I am compromising on Y = A * X for i=1:n z(i) = Y(:,i)' * X(:,i) end which is a little faster/lighter but still seems unsatisfactory. I was hoping there might be some matlab/scilab idiom or trick to achieve this result more efficiently?

• Visual Studio 2008 freezing when editing aspx/master pages

  Visual Studio freezes up continually when I'm editing master pages or aspx files. Here's what I've tried that have not helped: restarting VS only working with few files open at a time Disabled all addins (resharper etc.) deleted .suo and .user files changed default editor from Web Form Editor and Master Page Editor to HTML Editor installed SP1 I don't have tons of files - 3 Master pages and maybe 30 aspx files. It is a asp.net mvc project. All I have to do to get VS to freeze is type a little text or even just paste. The freezing lasts a good 5-10 seconds. My machine has 4GB of RAM and fast disks. Could it have anything to do with asp.net mvc? Would the amount and size of other projects in the solution affect the editor?

• Lua API for TokyoTyrant

  Hi SO folks, I didn't managed to find an Lua client/api for TokyoTyrant. Such Api exists for TokyoCabinet, but not for TT. And Perl and Ruby API exists for TT. TT provides a native binary protocol, a memcached-compatible protocol, and an HTTP-oriented protocol. So my questions are : 1/ Do you think using the memcached (using luamemcached) or the HTTP protocol (using luaSocket) is "enough" for most / simple usage, and so a native Lua api is not necessary ? (the app is a simple uuid storage/distributor) ? 2/ Does it make sense to not use TokyoTyrant, but only TokyoCabinet, and use Lua at the application level to provide network and concurrent access to TC, using, say, Copas (Copas is , from their website, "a dispatcher based on coroutines that can be used by TCP/IP servers." ? • Functional Programming - Lots of emphasis on recursion, why?

  I am getting introduced to Functional Programming [FP] (using Scala). One thing that is coming out from my initial learnings is that FPs rely heavily on recursion. And also it seems like, in pure FPs the only way to do iterative stuff is by writing recursive functions. And because of the heavy usage of recursion seems the next thing that FPs had to worry about were StackoverflowExceptions typically due to long winding recursive calls. This was tackled by introducing some optimizations (tail recursion related optimizations in maintenance of stackframes and @tailrec annotation from Scala v2.8 onwards) Can someone please enlighten me why recursion is so important to functional programming paradigm? Is there something in the specifications of functional programming languages which gets "violated" if we do stuff iteratively? If yes, then I am keen to know that as well. PS: Note that I am newbie to functional programming so feel free to point me to existing resources if they explain/answer my question. Also I do understand that Scala in particular provides support for doing iterative stuff as well.

• rails using jruby 1.5 - slow!!

  Hi! I'm currently using passenger with ree 1.8.7 in production for a rails 2.3.5 project using postgresql as a database. ab -n 10000 -c 100: 285.69 [#/sec] (mean) I read jruby should be the fastest solution, so I installed jruby-1.5.0.rc2 together with jdbc postgres adapter and glassfish. As the performance is really poor, I also started running my application using "jruby --server -J-Druby.jit.threshold=0 script/server -e production". Anyway, I only get ab -n 10000 -c 100: 43.88 [#/sec] (mean) Thread_safe! is activated in my rails config. Java seems to use all cores, cpu usage is around 350% (top). ruby -v: jruby 1.5.0.RC2 (ruby 1.8.7 patchlevel 249) (2010-04-28 7c245f3) (Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM 1.6.0_16) [amd64-java] I wonder what I'm doing wrong and how to get better performancre with jruby than with ree? • Resources for Programmatic Rendering of Topology Maps

  Servus, Do you know of any frameworks, APIS, languages, or other resources that are well suited for drawing topology maps that allow a user to interact with objects on the map? I am not constrained by language choice and the program can be web-based, or stand-alone. I thought I would check before rolling my own. My goal is not to draw cartographic maps, but more like this picture: http://www.fineconnection.com/files/images/GraphicalNM.PNG, or if you are familiar with Edward Tufte's books, the data-visualization mechanisms he describes such as a map of a metro or subway. Also, if you have had any experience rendering these types of user interfaces or usage of underlying datastructures, I would be grateful to hear any thoughts you have on the subject, advice, any "gotchas." • Stack memory in Android

  I'm writing an app that has a foreground service, content provider, and a Activity front end that binds to the service and gets back a List of objects using AIDL. The service does work and updates a database. If I leave the activity open for 4-8+ hours, and go to the "Running Services" section under settings on the phone (Nexus One) an unusually large amount of memory being used is shown (~42MB). I figure there is a leak. When I check the heap memory i get Heap size:~18MB, ~2MB allocated, ~16MB free. Analyzing the hprof in Eclipse MAT seems fine, which leads me to theorize that memory is leaking on the stack. Is this even possible? If it is, what can I do to stop or investigate the leak? Is the reported memory usage on the "Running Services" section of android even correct (I assume it is)? Another note: I have been unable to reproduce this issue when the UI is not up (with only the service running)

  Hello, is this a valid JQuery usage pattern to : <script type="text/javascript"> $("body").prepend('<input type="hidden" id="error" value="show">'); </script> That is using Jquery to manipulate / insert HTML Tags when the Document has NOT YET been loaded (by not using document.ready for the inserting into the DOM)? (Normally I only use document.ready, but in this case I need to insert some Information into the DOM that then is present, when document.ready is called. This is some kind of "happens-before" relations ship I want to achieve so that I am shure when document.ready is called the inserted Form field is available in the document, as I depend on that information. • In your experience, what has inspired you to change a fundamental programming tool

  A lot of what I am working on is changing the mindset of a community of developers. Moving them from one tool to another, or to picking up a new tool. What are some of the suggested or recommended ways to get a community to pick up a new meme? While we can mandate tool usage, this is a last resort. I would rather have the developers move to any new tools of their own accord. I'm not a programmer, I need to understand why a programmer will move from one tool to another. Edited the title thanks to a fabulous comment! My world runs on Meme's, tipping points, and general pressures. This is why I needed to ask. And clarifying yet more- I am the middle manager needing to plan and manage an implementation and not a sales person.

Question: I am going to do a presentation on C# coding guidelines but it is not supposed to limit to coding standards. So I have a rough idea but I think I need to address good programing practices. So the contents will be something like this. Basic coding standards - Casing, Formatting etc. Good practices - Usage of Hashset over other data structures, String vs String Builder, String's immutability and using them effectively etc Really I would like to add more good practices (Especially to improve the performance.) So like to hear some more good practices to be used with C#. Any suggestions??? (No need of large descriptions :) Just the idea is sufficient.)

The question: is this a valid usage or it is just current implementation uses the same name as the jsp bean id when stores and looks for a bean in a session?

• How to efficiently track my geolocation during traveling using iPhone

  I'm going to travel through Thailand and I want to keep track of my location to geotag photos afterwards taken with a digital camera (iPhone's camera is not good enough). There are two things that are important here: I don't want to update manually I want the battery to last as long as possible, since the times I will be able to charge will be scarce I've thought about creating a web page that periodically sends my geolocation to a script that stores it in a database, but I don't know if GPS data is available in Mobile Safari. Second, I want the data I send to be as small as possible, and the frequency this is done s few as possible, because of the pricing of mobile data usage abroad. Any suggestions what would be a good solution here?

Even if I embed a search-functionality in my Java application I could use SolrJ to avoid the HTTP trade-off when using Solr. So, when would you recommend to use "pure-Lucene"?   Hello, (This question falls between programming and finding a tool, so I guess I'll ask here in SO since it has more activity than SuperUser.) I like the simplicity of SQLite, but by design, it doesn't support concurrent access. The apps I write don't have heavy needs, so I'd like to avoid heavier solutions like MySQL that are more difficult to deploy (remote customers with usually no computer personnel). Does someone know of a good solution that would offer the following features? Client available for VB.Net applications The server itself doesn't have to be a .Net application. Actually, I'd rather a bare-metal server so that it can run even on embedded Linux hosts with less RAM/CPU than regular PC's Easy install: the client part should either be statically linked inside the client application or be available as a single DLL, and the server should just be a single EXE listening for queries, à la Fossil (http://www.fossil-scm.org) clients can locate the server on the LAN by broadcasting data picked up by the server, so users don't have to write down the IP address and paste it into each client open-source, or moderately priced closed-source Thank you.

• Virtualizing WindowsXP on Linux Fedora 12 for Photoshop....

  I am running a Linux server from 2000, I have Fedora12 installed as the OS. I know you can virtualize Windows XP on the system to be able to run Windows programs, but the problem is I My server has only one 1333Mhz Pentium 3 processor and 1G of Ram. granted this is a pretty kick ass computer for the day, but lacking the processor I'm afraid that I will not be able to run Windows virtualization to support Photoshop CS3. Is there any program out there that runs similar to Photoshop, like windows Digital Image suite 10, that will run smoothly in my Linux Fedora 12 environment? or can I virtualize windows and run the Windows digital image suite 10, without slowing or corrupting my system?

• Java program strange behavior, how to fix it ?

  My notebook has Intel CPU, running Windows Vista. My program looks like this : public class Tool_Lib_Simple { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("123"); } } When I run it, I expect to see : "123", but the output was : "Hi NM : How are you NM ?" which was the old output from two days ago before I changed my program. If I copy this program into another project in Netbean 6.7, it will run correctly and output "123", and if I change the program name from "Tool_Lib_Simple" to something else, it will also output "123", but just not under the name of "Tool_Lib_Simple" in the current project's src directory, I've deleted the "build" directory and did re-compile, re-build, it still gives me "Hi NM : How are you NM ?" as a result, seems to me the old version of my program is saved in the hard drive or ram and got stuck there, I've programmed many years, hardly ever encounter this kind of problem, how to fix this ?   I'm currently researching Java libraries to help in building a meta type search engine in the sense of being able to replace any given search engine in the back-end of the application or to simultaneously search using multiple search engines. I'm not interested in the GUI part here, just the generalization of search engine APIs and usage. I'd like to know about the common libraries used to achieve this task and if there are any common patterns used in this case. I imagined that this problem is common enough to be able to find plenty of stuff on Google, but it seems like search is a very proprietary domain and not much information is fed back to the community.

• LNK1106 with big binary resource

  I have a rather huge .dat-file (896MB) included as a BIN resource in my project. Now I get a LNK1106 link error ("fatal error LNK1106: invalid file or disk full: cannot seek to 0x382A3920".) I use Visual Studio 2005 under Windows XP, and have tried on a 4GB RAM machine with high Virtual Memory settings and lots of disk space. I have tried a number of different optimization flags, but to no avail. Does anyone have a clue? EDIT: I have narrowed it down to a specific size of the compiled resource. If the .res file is 544078588 bytes (about 518.9MB) or larger, the error occurs. If it is smaller it works just fine. Still no solution, though...

  Sun's "Code Conventions for the Java Programming Language" was last updated April 1999. Ten years later a lot has changed in the language, as well as general usage patterns. Are there more up to date, widely adopted standards? Most guidelines omit specifying file encoding and line endings. Sun recommends mixed tabs and spaces. The Eclipse IDE defaults to Eclipse's standard, which is tabs only. The Maven style guide is spaces only. Many style guides, such as JBoss, follow Sun's guidelines, but prefer K&R braces instead of OTBS. Each Apache project has it's own style guide, with slight differences between each one.

• Modifying setup file with PHP

  I have an application that needs branding when downloaded in certain continents. When installed in North America, for instance, the application, when run, displays a different logo and company name than in Europe. The setup file is provided through a PHP script. Presently there is a Inno Setup executable for Windows and a DMG for Mac OS X. I have seen that when downloading Google Chrome, you can specify whether or not it should send usage statistics. A brief look at the JavaScript that controls it reveals that this is simply sent back to the server with &usagestats=0 or &usagestats=1. How would I go about influencing the installation based upon settings specified via the PHP download page?
