I've checked against black lists and the ip and domain are clean. 1and1 are saying its Barracuda black list and barracuda are saying its not blacklisted and that its somethign with 1and1 server. section from log file... • Apache no longer starts at Windows boot up

  I have Apache installed as part of XAMPP - local test server. It is configured as a Windows (XP) Service. Startup type is "Automatic". For a long time now it has always started when Windows boots up, but recently this has stopped happening. I now need to start it manually via the XAMPP Control Panel - at which point it appears to start up perfectly OK. The only recent updates to the machine (that I recall) are Windows Updates - none of which appear to have "known issues" that relate to this. And updates to Google Chrome. Any ideas what could prevent Apache from starting automatically at Windows (XP) boot up? EDIT#1 There are 2 related Errors in my system event log regarding the Service Control Manager: Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the Apache2.2 service to connect. The Apache2.2 service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. When I manually start the Apache server after boot up there are 2 "information" events stating that it was "sent a start control" and that it "entered the running state". Although I notice it appears to take 19 seconds between the start control being sent and entering a running state - according to the event log. So, maybe 30 seconds during boot up isn't long enough (anymore) for Apache to start??

For those just getting started with Fusion Applications user security, this article gave some handy examples to get your going. Jani's Java Cloud Service series continued strongly, with examples of integration using ADFbc, a Web Service Proxy client, and the ADF Data Control. From Other Teams The Oracle A-Team provided a broad set of articles during May, with various topics related to Fusion Applications including patching and performance management for on-premises deployments, and generic content on both integration and data extraction via web services. As part of their presentation to Oracle Israel User Group, our AppsUX colleagues explained the fresh new type of interface to Oracle Sales, through the voice mobile apps. This was in addition to demonstrations of the newer Release 8 Simplified UI customization options. Finally Angelo, our colleague in Platform Technical Services, explained in his blog how to use the findCriteria element included in all Oracle Sales web services to reduce the data returned, making response payloads much more specific, lightweight and therefore usable. Events and Announcements Oliver explained in this post about the new set of code samples on OTN for extending Sales Cloud using Oracle Platform as a Service. In addition, a new set of cloud developer documentation was released to provide more guided-learning on extending Oracle Sales Cloud with Oracle Platform as a Service (PaaS) services. This illustrative content is mainly as downloadable PDFs, and include topics covering sales cloud extensibility basics, using web services from JDeveloper (including security), using PaaS for SaaS development, and ADF (including mobile).

• SQL Server Agent refuses to start

  I'm having a problem with SQL Server 2005 where the SQL Server Agent suddenly refuses to start. If I attempt to start it through Services, I get the error "SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER) service on Local Computer started and then stopped." In the Application log, I have the following entry: Event Type: Error Event Source: SQLSERVERAGENT Event Category: Service Control Event ID: 103 Date: 5/20/2010 Time: 11:07:07 AM User: N/A Computer: SHAREPOINT Description: SQLServerAgent could not be started (reason: Unable to connect to server 'SHAREPOINT'; SQLServerAgent cannot start). This database has been running fine for four months. It contains a SharePoint configuration database, which two days ago stopped working, throwing me a message that the configuration database cannot be reached. It was then that I realized the SQL Server Agent was not running, and I have been unable to restart it. I have tried running it with both the local system account and the network service account, with the same results. So far, I have tried: Granting the administrators group, network service, and SharePoint SQL Server Agent account public and sysadmin roles on the database. Granting the administrators group, network service, and SharePoint SQL Server Agent account full permissions to the entire MSSQL directory and all files within. I still have no joy.

  How do you find the cause of httpd errors in Fedora 16? The new systemctl command in Fedora 16 seems to horribly obscure any useful logging info. [root@host ~]# systemctl start httpd.service Job failed. See system logs and 'systemctl status' for details. [root@host ~]# systemctl status httpd.service httpd.service - The Apache HTTP Server (prefork MPM) Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/httpd.service; enabled) Active: failed since Thu, 21 Jun 2012 16:26:56 -0400; 1min 23s ago Process: 2119 ExecStop=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -k stop (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Process: 2215 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -k start (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE) Main PID: 1062 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) CGroup: name=systemd:/system/httpd.service So the first command fails...and it tells me to run another command...which simply tells me that the command returned an error code. Where's the actual error? • How can I recover from SharePoint configuration errors after promoting the server to a Domain Controller?

  I have a SharePoint 2010 VM setup in VirtualBox and I was using local machine accounts to handle security on the server. While preparing for a demo it came time to have some meaningful users on my VM image. I followed some docs on promoting my server to a Domain Controller in a new forrest. So now I have [MachineName].SPDEMO.CONTOSO.com and I can add users as needed. However, when I try to connect to my SharePoint sites I am getting a white screen with the error: "Cannot connect to the configuration database" I changed the pool identity account of each of my IIS app pools to the new Administrator account and started the services successfully but I can't get the SQL services to start up. When I try to start them I get the following error: Windows could not start the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 17058. In the event log I see the following error: The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service terminated with service-specific error %%17058. Can I recover from this or should I roll back or just uninstall the Domain Controller role. I'd like to keep the server as a standalone DC so I can do some user profile creation/management but I need the SharePoint bits to work as well.

  Having troubles getting VSFTPD running on Fedora 14. Here is what I have done so far, please let me know if I am missing something. When I try to connect through FTP it says connection time out. Any domain account that logs on to my 2008 machine gets a +- 20 second waiting time on "user profile service" I am using roaming profiles, they are around 8mb in size, and most folders are already redirected to a network share. event log registers no errors, there is more than 1 network card installed, but I have the correct card listed as "primary" Is there any way to increase verbosity of logging on specifically the "user profile service" ? • Cannot connect to secure wireless with Netgear wna3100 USB

  I have installed Ubuntu 11.10. I used a wired connection to download and install all of the updates. When I tried to use a Netgear WNA3100 wireless USB network adapter, it failed. Much searching and trying things I was finally able to get it working by disabling security on my router. I have verified this by disabling security and I was able to connect. When I enabled security (WPA2 PSK), the connection failed. What is necessary to enable security (WPA2 PSK) and still use the Netgear USB interface? • Internal Data Masking

  By default, the data in the product is unmasked for authorized users. If particular data within the object is considered a candidate for data masking then the masking capabilities with the product can be used to mask the data in an appropriate fashion. The inbuilt Data Masking capabilities of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework uses a number of configuration elements: An algorithm, of type F1-MASK, is specified to configure the elements of the data masking including the masking character, number of suffix characters left unmasked, characters to ignore in the string, the application service, security type and authorization levels applicable to the mask. A Data Masking Feature Configuration is created to define where the algorithm applies. The specification of the feature allows you to define the fields to encrypt using the configured algorithm. The algorithm can be attached to a schema field, table field, characteristic, search field and even a child record (such as an identifier). The appropriate user groups are then connected to the application services with the appropriate service types and level to indicate whether the masking applies to the user group or not. For example, say there is a field called CCNBR in the product which holds the credit card details. I would create an algorithm, say CCformatCC, to mask the credit card number with the last few digits as unmasked (as the standard in most systems dictate). I would specify on the Field Mask the following: field="CCNBR", alg="CMformatCC" On the algorithm CMfomatCC, I would specify the mask, application service, security type and the authorization level which users would see the credit card unmasked. To finish the configuration off and to implemention I would connect the appropriate user groups to the application service I specified with the security type and appropriate authorization level for that group. Whenever a user accesses the CCNBR field on any of the maintenance screens, searches and other screens that use the CCNBR meta data definition would then be masked according to the user group that the user was a member of. Refer to the documentation supplied with F1-MASK algorithm type entry for more examples of what is possible.

• Agile Like Jazz

  (I’ve been sitting on this for a week or so now, thinking that it needed to be tightened up a bit to make it less rambling. Since that’s clearly not going to happen, reader beware!) I had the privilege of spending around 90 minutes last night sitting and listening to Sonny Rollins play a concert at the Disney Center in LA. If you don’t know who Sonny Rollins is, I don’t know how to explain the experience; if you know who he is, I don’t need to. Suffice it to say that he has been recording professionally for over 50 years, and helped create an entire genre of music. A true master by any definition. One of the most intriguing aspects of a concert like this, however, is watching the master step aside and let the rest of the musicians play. Not just play their parts, but really play… letting them take over the spotlight, to strut their stuff, to soak up enthusiastic applause from the crowd. Maybe a lot of it has to do with the fact that Sonny Rollins has been doing this for more than a half-century. Maybe it has something to do with a kind of patience you learn when you’re on the far side of 80 – and the man can still blow a mean sax for 90 minutes without stopping! Maybe it has to do with the fact that he was out there for the love of the music and the love of the show, not because he had anything to prove to anyone and, I like to think, not for the money. Perhaps it had more to do with the fact that, when you’re at that level of mastery, the other musicians are going to be good. Really good. Whatever the reasons, there was a incredible freedom on that stage – the ability to improvise, for each musician to showcase their own specialization and skills, and them come back to the common theme, back to being on the same page, as it were. All this took place in the same venue that is home to the L.A. Phil. Somehow, I can’t ever see the same kind of free-wheeling improvisation happening in that context. And, since I’m a geek, I started thinking about agility. Rollins has put together a quintet that reflects his own particular style and past. No upright bass or piano for Rollins – drums, bongos, electric guitar and bass guitar along with his sax. It’s not about the mix of instruments. Other trios, quartets, and sextets use different mixes of instruments. New Orleans jazz tends towards trombones instead of sax; some prefer cornet or trumpet. But no matter what the choice of instruments, size matters. Team sizes are something I’ve been thinking about for a while. We’re on a quest to rethink how our teams are organized. They just feel too big, too unwieldy. In fact, they really don’t feel like teams at all. Most of the time, they feel more like collections or people who happen to report to the same manager. I attribute this to a couple factors. One is over-specialization; we have a tendency to have people work in silos. Although the teams are product-focused, within them our developers are both generalists and specialists. On the one hand, we expect them to be able to build an entire vertical slice of the application; on the other hand, each developer tends to be responsible for the vertical slice. As a result, developers often work on their own piece of the puzzle, in isolation. This sort of feels like working on a jigsaw in a group – each person taking a set of colors and piecing them together to reveal a portion of the overall picture. But what inevitably happens when you go to meld all those pieces together? Inevitably, you have some sections that are too big to move easily. These sections end up falling apart under their own weight as you try to move them. Not only that, but there are other challenges – figuring out where that section fits, and how to tie it into the rest of the puzzle. Often, this is when you find a few pieces need to be added – these pieces are “glue,” if you will. The other issue that arises is due to the overhead of maintaining communications in a team. My mother, who worked in IT for around 30 years, once told me that 20% per team member is a good rule of thumb for maintaining communication. While this is a rule of thumb, it seems to imply that any team over about 6 people is going to become less agile simple because of the communications burden. Teams of ten or twelve seem like they fall into the philharmonic organizational model. Complicated pieces of music requiring dozens of players to all be on the same page requires a much different model than the jazz quintet. There’s much less room for improvisation, originality or freedom. (There are probably orchestral musicians who will take exception to this characterization; I’m calling it like I see it from the cheap seats.) And, there’s one guy up front who is running the show, whose job is to keep all of those dozens of players on the same page, to facilitate communications. Somehow, the orchestral model doesn’t feel much like a self-organizing team, either. The first violin may be the best violinist in the orchestra, but they don’t get to perform free-wheeling solos. I’ve never heard of an orchestra getting together for a jam session. But I have heard of teams that organize their work based on the developers available, rather than organizing the developers based on the work required. I have heard of teams where desired functionality is deferred – or worse yet, schedules are missed – because one critical person doesn’t have any bandwidth available. I’ve heard of teams where people simply don’t have the big picture, because there is too much communication overhead for everyone to be aware of everything that is happening on a project. I once heard Paul Rayner say something to the effect of “you have a process that is perfectly designed to give you exactly the results you have.” Given a choice, I want a process that’s much more like jazz than orchestral music. I want a process that doesn’t burden me with lots of forms and checkboxes and stuff. Give me the simplest, most lightweight process that will work – and a smaller team of the best developers I can find. This seems like the kind of process that will get the kind of result I want to be part of.

• Two Cloudy Observations from Oracle OpenWorld

  Now that the dust has settled from another amazing Oracle OpenWorld, I wanted to reflect back on a couple of key observations I made during the event. First, it was pretty clear that Cloud was again a big deal at this year's conference. It was hard to not notice that Oracle continues to be "all-in" with respect to cloud computing. Just to give you an idea of the emphasis on Cloud, there were over 300 Cloud-related sessions at this year's OpenWorld. If you caught some of the demo booths in the Oracle Red Lounge, then you saw some of the great platform, application, and social services that are now part of Oracle Cloud, as well as numerous demos of private cloud products that Oracle offers. Second, during Thomas Kurian's keynote presentation on Oracle Cloud, he announced the Preview Availability of a new service called Oracle Developer Cloud Service. This new platform service will provide developers with instant access to environments to better manage the application development lifecycle in the cloud. It provides development project teams access to favorite tools like Hudson, Git, Github, wikis, and tasks to help make innovation faster, more collaborative, and more effective. • Sharepoint Server 2007 generates event log entry every 5 minutes - "The SSP Timer Job Distribution L

  I get the following error logged into the Event Log every 5 minutes: The SSP Timer Job Distribution List Import Job was not run. Reason: Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer In addition, OWSTimer.exe periodically gets into a state where its consuming almost all the CPU and only killing the process or restarting the Sharepoint services fixes it (although I'm not sure if this is a related or seperate issue). I have tried the following (based on various suggestions floating around the web), all to no avail: iisreset (no affect) Added the Sharepoint and Sharepoint Search service accounts to Log on as a batch job and Log on as a service policies in the Group Policies for the domain. I went into the Local Computer Policy on the Sharepoint server and verified that those policies had actually been applied Verified that the Sharepoint and Sharepoint Search service accounts are both in the WSS_WPG group Verified in dcomcnfg that the WSS_WPG group (and indeed the Sharepoint and Sharepoint search service accounts) has local activation rights for SPSearch. • Interview with Koen Aben, Supply Chain Director of WE Fashion

  We recently spoke to Koen Aben, the Supply Chain Director of WE Fashion, who gave us some insight into how Oracle supported the international fashion retailer through the completion of a large scale integration project across its 340 European stores. Koen explains the reasoning behind the project which was to create a common retail foundation and to integrate and align working processes to drive insight and enable continued growth. It is always good to hear from someone of Koen’s experience who can articulate the benefits of partnering with the right company for such an extensive project as this. Koen explains that a crucial element of such a project is to unify business applications into a common platform, adding that for successful growth, retailers really need to achieve enterprise-wide alignment. At the start of the three year project, WE Fashion’s application platform was fragmented impacting the company’s ability to support sustained growth. In light of this, WE Fashion invested in its processes, systems, teams and partnerships to build the needed retail foundation. Now after successfully completing the project, the basis is in place to ensure that growth is unimpeded. In the video, Koen Aben highlights some of the factors necessary for the success of the project as: Having an understanding that the process of creating a growth platform for a company is a long journey Accepting that during a lengthy project such as this, there will be high and low points experienced within the project team and the business, but that the relationship with your partners is crucial to the success of the project. Having the correct team in place will prove to be the “lynch –pin” of any successful project Oracle supported Koen and his team in implementing this project, and is recognised for the role it played during this development in partnership with the company. On his experience with working with the Oracle team, Koen points out that in the critical situations, Oracle was there to ensure that the right people were in place whenever needed and this was key to ensuring the project’s success. Since Oracle is one of the few providers that can offer an enterprise-wide retail platform, our best practice approach is key to connecting interactions throughout the business to enable insight and optimise operations. This is a great example of a large scale international retail project, where the true success of its completion is reflected in how proud the company is about what has been achieved, and the fact that results are already being seen.
