  • (C) which heap policies are most often used?

    - by hatorade
I have heard that 'better-fit' is pretty commonly used, but I don't seem to read much about it online. What are the most commonly used / thought to be the most efficient policies used by heap allocators. (I admit my vocabulary may be flawed; when I say 'policy' i mean things such as 'best fit,' 'first fit,' 'next fit,' etc)

  • Has anyone had trouble with Intellisense in Visual Studio when using UltraVNC?

    - by mullala
Hi, a colleague and I are trying pair programming for the first time. We both remote into a development machine; I'm using RemoteDesktop and my colleague is using UltraVNC. This works great except that he can't see the Intellisense dropdown in Visual Studio 2008. According to online posts, this may be something to do with DirectDraw, but I don't see much by way of a workaround. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks, Andrew

  • Seeking free ODBC database optimization tool for non-experts

    - by mawg
I'm a database n00b and am reading as many books as I can. I have been given responsibility for an ODBC tool where the databases were designed by a hardware engineer with some VB experience - which made him a s/w guru in the small firm at that time. Things are running slowly and I suspect that the db could have been designed better. I hope to learn enough to use Explain/Describe, etc maybe add some indices, but, in the meantime, is there any free for commercial use tool which can examine an ODBC database and suggest improvements. I'm just talking about db schema here, but maybe I should also be looking at optimizing Selects with Joins? Is there a tool for that? ODBC compliant.

  • Align 2 sets of 2D point clouds

    - by user108088
From what I gather, there are two major methods to perform alignment on point clouds, Iterative Closest Point (ICP) and Particle Filtering. What are the advantages of each method? And can someone point me some good tutorials. For what I am currently doing, I think ICP would be easier, I can't seem to find any simple reference implementations online for 2d point sets. Has anyone seen (psuedo)code for ICP with details on the transformation step? Thanks in advance.

  • I know the big picture but can't put it in place

    - by Simbilim
Hi, I'm interested in web development and by that I mean the bigger projects like facebook or twitter. I know the basics of java, css, php and mysql. I know there is a lot more out there. I read about it. But I don't know what the purpose is and how to put in place. Things like: Scribe, thrift, casandra, Unix/Linux, shell/perl/python scripting, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, non-relational NoSQL datastores, JVM, nginx I want to know why they need it, how they use it and what te purpose is. What I need is a book like technical background of facebook for dummies or so. Are there any books or websites that explain this from scratch? Thank you!

  • Assign values from same table

    - by Reddy S R
I have a database table with parent child relationships between different rows. 1 parent can have any number of children. Children do not have children. I want to copy 'Message' from 'Parent Category' to child categories. CategoryID Name Value Message ParentID DeptId 1 Books 9 Specials 1 2 Music 7 1 3 Paperback 25 1 1 4 PDFs 26 1 2 5 CDs 35 2 1 If that was sample data, Paperback should have Specials as it's Message after the query is run. I have gotten the child rows (the query runs very slow, don't know why), but how do I get the data and assign it to appropriate child rows? --@DeptId = 1 select * from Categories where ParentID in( select CategoryID from Categories where DeptID = @DeptId ) I would like to see a solution that would not use cursors. Thanks

  • SQL query to select distinct record with 2 or more repetition in another field

    - by kyohiros
So I have this table of book orders, it contains 2 columns, one is the order ID(primary key) and another is the ID of the book that the customer ordered. For example: | OrderID | BookID | | 0001 | B002 | | 0002 | B005 | | 0003 | B002 | | 0004 | B003 | | 0005 | B005 | | 0006 | B002 | | 0007 | B002 | What I want is to get the IDs of the books that got 2 or more purchases/orders, for example if I run the SQL query against the above data, I would get this as the result: | BookID | | B002 | | B005 | I don't know if this can be archived in SQL or I have to built a simpler statement and repetitive run the query against all the records in another language. I need some help and thanks for reading my question.

  • Programming cookbook? [closed]

    - by user73669
Possible Duplicate: What is the single most influential book every programmer should read? Hello With sites like The Daily WTF and recurring threads on Slashdot and elsewhere about bad programming, I figured that, to avoid people reinventing the wheel (badly or not), there should be a good, fat book on programming that would go through typical programming problems and show good, known algorithms, either in pseudo-code or some language with an easy syntax so that the language is not an issue. Here's the list of books on the subject I saw at my local computer bookstore. Can you recommend a couple, or add to this list if it's missing better options? The art of computer programming Code complete Masterminds of programming 97 things every programmer should know The passionate programmer Pragmatic thinking & learning Coders at work The algorithm design manual Algorithms and programming How to think about algorithms How to think like a programmer Why programs fail Beautiful data Beautiful code The productive programmer Solid code Write great code Clean code Programming language pragmatics Hello world Learning Processing Learn to program Thank you.

  • Script to fix broken lines in a .txt file?

    - by Gravitas
Hi, I'd love like to read books properly on my Kindle. To achieve my dream, I need a script to fix broken lines in a txt file. For example, if the txt file has this line: He watched Kahlan as she walked with her shoulders slumped down. ... then it should fix it by deleting the newline before the word "down": He watched Kahlan as she walked with her shoulders slumped down. So, fellow programmers, whats (a) the easiest way to do this and (b) the best language? p.s. The solution will involve searching for a lowercase letter in column 1, and deleting the newline before it to stitch the lines together. There are 1.2 million occurrences of this "rogue line break" in the novel I am trying to fix.

  • Looking for industry numbers on source code management

    - by Dave Duchene
I'm looking for statistics on SCM usage, in particular I'm trying to find out what percentage of their time developers spend on SCM-related tasks. The more detailed the breakdown, the better. Online and offline resources would both be tremendously useful to me. Can anyone point me towards some industry studies? Preferably recent ones?

  • How to dump STDIN to a file, using C++ STL?

    - by Jimm Chen
HHello all, this is a straight forward question, but not a straight forward answer can be found by just Googling today. Hope someone can show me a concise answer before I dig into those thick C++ books and finally find the solution out. Thank you. I'm writing this program so to make a workaround in this issue: Why do I get 'Bad file descriptor' when trying sys.stdin.read() in subversion pre-revprop-change py script? Note: Content from STDIN may be arbitrary binary data. Please use C++ STL functions, iostream, ifstream etc . If the file creation/writing failed, I'd like to catch the exception to know the case.
