  • is there an easy way to convert jquery code to javascript?

    - by davidsleeps
hopefully the question doesn't sound stupid, but there are lots of examples out there of achieving certain things in javascript/dom using jQuery. Using jQuery is not always an option (or even a want) which can make understanding the examples of javascript solutions written in jQuery hard. Is there an easy way to convert jQuery code to regular javascript? I guess without having to access or understand the jQuery source code... edit (future readers): pretend there is a logical reason why jQuery isn't available!

  • How can I ensure that JavaScript inserted via AJAX will be executed after the accompanying HTML (als

    - by RenderIn
I've got portions of pages being replaced with HTML retrieved via AJAX calls. Some of the HTML coming back has JavaScript that needs to be run once in order to initialize the accompanying HTML (setting up event handlers). Since the document has already been loaded, when I replace chunks of HTML using jQuery's .html function, having jQuery(document).ready(function() {...}); doesn't execute since the page loaded long before and this is just a snippet of HTML being replaced. What's the best way to attach event handlers whose code is packaged along with the HTML it's interested in, when that content is loaded via AJAX? Should I just put a procedural block of javascript after the HTML , so that when I insert the new HTML block, jQuery will execute the javascript immediately? Is the HTML definitely in the DOM and ready to be acted upon by JavaScript which is in the same .html call?

  • How to run a javascript function before postback of asp.net button?

    - by Curtis White
I'm using Javascript to create a DIV element and open up a new page by using onclientclick. This works great. Now, I need to write to it from the server side and this element must be created before it is posted back. How do I get the javascript to execute before the postback? Currently, I have to press the button twice because the element doesn't exist to write too on the first click. To be clear, I need this to execute before the "OnClick" of the button. Update: It looks like the Javascript function is called before the postback but the element is not updated until I run the second postback. Hmm Update: Unfortunately it is a bit more complicated then this. I'm creating a div tag in javascript to open a new window. Inside the div tag, I'm using a databinding syntax <%=Preview% so that I can get access to this element on the server side. From the server side, I'm injecting the code. I'm thinking this may be a chicken-egg problem but not sure. UPDATE! It is not the Javascript not running first. It is the databinding mechanism which is reading the blank variable before I'm able to set it. Hmm

  • Facebook "->api" permissions

    - by Matthieu Marcé
I have trouble using Facebook auth on my website... I'm using the PHP Sdk and I don't understand why I can use some functions like "getLoginUrl"/"getLoginStatusUrl"/"getUser" (with right answers : the facebook session is started, i get the user's facebook ID) and when I want to use something like $me = $facebook->api("/me/permissions"); or just $me = $facebook->api("/me"); there's always an exception and nothing works ... I guess it has something to do with permissions or token maybe, but I don't know what. When the user sign up on my website, I ask permissions I need with this scope : "email,user_about_me,user_location,read_friendlists,publish_stream" A clue that the permissions seem to be ok is that when the exception occures, I ask the user to sign in again (facebook connect) and no window appears as if everything's ok, but still, the page is reloaded and the exception appears again and again... Please help, Thank you !

  • What is the best way to programmatically run javascript when an ASP.net page loads?

    - by Rising Star
In my global.asax file for my ASP.net project, I am checking for certain conditions. When those conditions are met, I want to automatically execute javascript code when the page runs. This is my code: if condition Then Response.Write("") Response.Write(" // Javascript code to do stuff ") Response.Write("") End If While this appears to work to execute the Javascript code, I don't think it's a best practice because this code will preceed all of the HTML of the page that gets loaded. What is the best way of programmatically tacking on some extra Javascript code to be run when my page loads?

  • What is the need of JavaScript while developing a page?

    - by nepc
I have been developing websites for some time now and I hardly use any Javascript in my pages. Whatever I can want to do with JavaScript, it is possible through PHP. Just like ajax itself. We can send a regular request instead of a ajax request, can't we? We can use "include" to include sub part of pages. So am i missing something about javascript, that I dont know of?

  • Do we still need backup code for people who have javascript disabled?

    - by SLC
I hear about it a bit in tutorials that I watch, that certain things won't work if javascript is disabled. Occasionally I see workarounds. The question is, are these relevent? I can't imagine anyone not having a javascript enabled browser nowadays, except the most ancient of phones, and chances are your page won't render on them properly anyway. Do people still bother to write backup code for javascript being disabled?

  • Learning HTML5 & CSS3. Do I need javascript too?

    - by samfu_1
I'm familiar with the way html & css work together. Recently I was previewing some html5 content demo'd by apple and saw they used a html5/css/javascript. I'm at the point where I need to know whether or not javascript is a must-learn; or if I can find similar workarounds with CSS3 & HTML5. Do I need to learn javascript?

  • Stuck with A* implementation

    - by Syed
I have implemented some A* code in C# using this JavaScript code. My C# implementation is the same as the above javascript code. But I'm unable to get it to work properly, e.g pathfinder blocks itself when the same number of walls are placed in front of it and some other scenarios as well like blocking it one way completely, I am assuming that code is standalone (not having other functionality included in other scripts). Can anyone tell me if the above code is missing any A star functionality?

  • Common header file for C++ and JavaScipt

    - by paperjam
I have an app that runs a C++ server backend and Javascript on the client. I would like to define certain strings once only, for both pieces of code. For example, I might have a CSS class "row-hover" - I want to define this class name in one place only in case I change it later. Is there an easy way to include, or read, some sort of common definitions file into both C++ and JavaScript? Ideally as a compile / preprocessing step but any neat approach good.

  • Web Development Goes Pre-Visual InterDev

    - by Ken Cox [MVP]
As a longtime and hardcore ASP.NET webforms developer, I’m finding the new client-side development world a bit of a grind.  I love learning new technologies, but I can’t help feeling we’ve regressed and lost our old RAD advantage as we move heavy lifting to the client. For my latest project, I’m using Telerik’s KendoUI in Visual Studio 2012. To say I feel clumsy writing this much JavaScript is an understatement. It seems like the only safe way to ‘write’ this code is by copying a working snippet from someone else and pasting it into my HTML page.  For me, JavaScript has largely been for small UI tasks like client-side validation and a bit of AJAX – and often emitted by a server-side control. I find myself today lost in nests of curly braces that Ctrl+K, Ctrl+D doesn’t seem to understand that well either. IntelliSense, my old syntax saviour, doesn’t seem to have kept up with this cobweb of code either. Code completion? Not seeing it. As I fumbled about this evening, I thought about how web development rocketed forward when Microsoft introduced Visual InterDev. Its Design-Time Controls (DTCs) changed the way we created sites. All the iterations of Visual Studio have enhanced that server-side experience where you let a tool write the bulk of the code and manually finesse it from there. What happened? Why am I typing  properties and values (especially default values!) into VS 2012 to get a client-side grid on a page? Where are the drag and drop objects that traditionally provided 70 percent of the mark-up and configuration?  Did we forget how to write Property Pages where you enter a value and the correct syntax appears magically in the source code? To me, the tooling was looking the other way as the scene shifted from server-side code to nimble client-side script. It’ll have to catch up. Although JavaScript is the lingua franca of web browsers, the language is unwieldy, tough to maintain, and messy to debug. If a .NET JIT compiler can turn our VB, F#, and C# source code into an Intermediate Language that executes on a computer, I don’t see why there can’t be a client-side compiler that turns a .NET language into JavaScript that browsers can consume.

  • Disqus integration in website.. what is wrong??

    - by Thieme Hennis
    hi, I try to embed a disqus forum in a website I created. I used the exact code and instructions they give on the installation instructions. I just don't get it. Not much on Google either. Is something wrong in the code? Should I change anything? <!DOCTYPE HTML> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> <link rel="shortcut icon" href="../favicon.ico"> <title>Little Louie | Hennis &amp; Blaisse Lovers Productions</title> <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="some,tags"> <link href="../style2.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"> </head> <body> <p><b>Some text</p> <p> <div id="disqus_thread"></div> <script type="text/javascript"> (function() { var dsq = document.createElement('script'); dsq.type = 'text/javascript'; dsq.async = true; dsq.src = 'http://littelouie.disqus.com/embed.js'; (document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0] || document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0]).appendChild(dsq); })(); </script> <noscript>Please enable JavaScript to view the <a href="http://disqus.com/?ref_noscript=littelouie">comments powered by Disqus.</a></noscript> <a href="http://disqus.com" class="dsq-brlink">blog comments powered by <span class="logo-disqus">Disqus</span></a> </p> <p> <script type="text/javascript"> var disqus_shortname = 'littelouie'; (function () { var s = document.createElement('script'); s.async = true; s.src = 'http://disqus.com/forums/littelouie/count.js'; (document.getElementsByTagName('HEAD')[0] || document.getElementsByTagName('BODY')[0]).appendChild(s); }()); </script> </p> </body> </html>

  • Automated Website Testing/Sanity/Quality

    - by Jeff
I am thinking about building a tool that starts from the root of a webpage and traverses the entire website gathering a list of resources such as CSS/HTML/Javascript files and then runs CSS/Javascript Lint + HTML Validator + Broken Link Finder. Before I start building something like this, I was wondering if this exists already? Thanks. I already searched Google quite a bit and couldn't find much.

  • Monitoring GWT Website

    - by Raf
We currently monitor our webapps using curl. More and more of our webapps use the GWT framework, which uses tons of javascript, and we can't rely on our curl system to monitor anymore. Therefore, we search the right tool to monitor, but it seems difficult to find a crawler which is light (no Selenium please) but handles javascript correctly. PS : we host our webapps as well as the probes, we don't want any Internet monitoring service.

  • Create simple jQuery plugin

    - by ybbest
In the last post, I have shown you how to add the function to jQuery. In this post, I will show you how to create plugin to achieve this. 1. You need to wrap your code in the following construct, this is because you should not use $ directly as $ is global variable, it could have clash with some other library which also use $.Basically, you can pass in jQuery object into the function, so that $ is made available inside the function. (JavaScript use function to create scope, so you can make sure $ is referred to jQuery inside the function ) (function($){ //Your code goes here. }; })(jQuery); 2. Put your code into the construct above. (function ($) { $.getParameterByName = function (name) { name = name.replace(/[\[]/, "\\\[").replace(/[\]]/, "\\\]"); var regexS = "[\\?&]" + name + "=([^&#]*)"; var regex = new RegExp(regexS); var results = regex.exec(window.location.search); if (results == null) return ""; else return decodeURIComponent(results[1].replace(/\+/g, " ")); }; })(jQuery); 3. Now you can reference the code into you project and you can call the method in you JavaScript References: Provides scope for variables Variables are scoped at the function level in javascript. This is different to what you might be used to in a language like C# or Java where the variables are scoped to the block. What this means is if you declare a variable inside a loop or an if statement, it will be available to the entire function. If you ever find yourself needing to explicitly scope a variable inside a function you can use an anonymous function to do this. You can actually create an anonymous function and then execute it straight away and all the variables inside will be scoped to the anonymous function: (function() { var myProperty = "hello world"; alert(myProperty); })(); alert(typeof(myProperty)); // undefined How does an anonymous function in JavaScript work? • Do I need to paste open source license information at the top of my webpage?

    - by Rich
I'm developing a JavaScript application that uses several open source JavaScript projects. All their licenses have a phrase like "You must give any other recipients of the Work or Derivative Works a copy of this License". Does this mean I need to make a massive HTML comment at the top of my webpage with all the licences of the software that I use? I ask this question because I've never seen the source code of a webpage that does this.
