  Features that I would ideally include in "HTPC-optimized": Full-screen. Navigable using a remote or the keyboard arrows. Legible at couch distances. Or, to put it another way, imagine the design requirements for Hulu Desktop or XBMC or WMC, applied to a web browser. Opera on a Wii meets most of these criteria but not being HD wastes a lot of potential. If a single solution doesn't exist, is there some combination of Firefox add-ons that will get me there?

  Microsoft’s pricing for SQL Server in the cloud, SQLAzure has been announced: $9.99   per month for 0 – 1GB $99.99 per month up to 10GB. There’s currently a 10GB maximum size cap for SQLAzure. For larger data storage needs, you’ll need to break the databases into smaller sizes. Scaling SQL Azure Applications If you think you’re going to need 100GB in the near term, it probably makes sense to break your application up into multiple separate databases from the get-go (10 x $9.99 = $99.99 anyway) and just make really sure none of the individual databases exceed 10GB. Beep Beep, Back That Database Up The bandwidth costs for SQL Azure are $.15 per GB of outbound bandwidth.  Assuming that you don’t compress the data before you pull it out of the cloud, that means daily backups of a 1GB database will add another $4.50 per month, and a 10GB database will add another $45/month.  Daily backups will cost about half of what your monthly service charges cost. It’s not completely clear from the press release, but if Microsoft follows Amazon’s pricing model, bandwidth between the Microsoft cloud services will not incur a cost.  That would mean it might make sense to spin up an Windows Azure computing application for $.12 per hour, use that application to compress your SQL Azure database, and then send the compressed data off to Azure storage for backup.  That would eliminate the data in/out costs, and minimize the Azure storage costs ($.15/GB).  Database administrators would back up their SQL Azure data to Azure Storage, keep a history of backups there, and restore them to SQL Azure faster when needed. Of course, there’s no native backup support in SQL Azure, and it’s not clear whether Windows Azure will include tools like SQL Server Integration Services. • VSS Not Creating Shadow Set

  I'm trying to setup backup scripts on WinXP to use Volume Shadow Sets. I downloaded the VSS 7.2 SDK from MSFT, and used the include vshadow.exe to create a shadow set: vshadow -script=vss-setvar.cmd f: (note that I've tried both f: and c:) vshadow executes just find, giving no errors, reporting the shadow is created. However, executing vshadow -q as the very next command results in "There are no shadows on the system" and, indeed, if I use dosdev to try and map the Shadow set named in vss-setvar.cmd, it will not work. Am I missing a step?

  TRADACOMS is an initial standard for EDI. Predominantly used in the retail sector of United Kingdom. This is similar to EDIFACT messaging system, involving ecs file for translation and validation of messages. The slight difference between EDIFACT and TRADACOMS is, 1. TRADACOMS is a simpler version than EDIFACT 2. There is no Functional Acknowledgment in TRADACOMS 3. Since it is just a business message to be sent to the trading partner, the various reference numbers at STX, BAT, MHD level need not be persisted in B2B as there is no Business logic gets derived out of this. Considering this, in AS11 B2B, this can be handled out of the box using Positional Flat file document plugin. Since STX, BAT segments which define the envelope details , and part of transaction, has to be sent from the back end application itself as there is no Document protocol parameters defined in B2B. These would include some of the identifiers like SenderCode, SenderName, RecipientCode, RecipientName, reference numbers. Additionally the batching in this case be achieved by sending all the messages of a batch in a single xml from backend application, containing total number of messages in Batch as part of EOB (Batch trailer )segment. In the case of inbound scenario, we can identify the document based on start position and end position of the incoming document. • How to quickly empty a very full recycle bin?

  I have deleted about half a million files from a folder, and didn't think to press Shift in order to delete them completely straight away. Now they're clogging my recycle bin, and Windows claims it will take 4 hours to empty it - it claims to do about 68 files per second. Is there some magic or an alternative method that can speed this up? Bounty - I'm starting a bounty. The files are still in my bin, as there was no pressing need to get rid of them and this way, I can try out the suggestions presented. I am, however, looking for a way that does not include hard-deleting the contents of the RECYCLER folder - I'm sure that would work, but it feels a bit unclean to me.

• Monogame - Shader parameters missing

  I am currently working on a simple game that I am building in Windows 8 using MonoGame (develop3d). I am using some shader code from a tutorial (made by Charles Humphrey) and having an issue populating a 'texture' parameter. I'm not well versed writing shaders, so this might be caused by a more obvious problem. I have debugged through MonoGame's Content processor to see how this shader is being parsed, all the non 'texture' parameters are there and look to be loading correctly. All others seem to be getting created fine. Any help would be appreciated.

• I'm scared for my technical phone interview for an internship!

  [EDIT 2.0 ]Hello everyone. This is my second phone interview for a development internship. My very first one was okay, but I didn't get my dream internship. Now, I'm facing fears about this upcoming interview. My fears include the following: I'm 19 years old. The thought of 2 lead developers interviewing me makes me think that I'll know so little of what they'd want me to know. Like they will expect so much. I'm a junior having these panic attacks that I did not get in the other internship. I have a little voice saying "You didn't get the other one. What makes you think you'll get this one?". I'm scared that I'll freeze up, forget everything I know, and stutter like an idiot. I'm still traumatized by the last one, because I really really wanted that internship, and I even studied very hard for it. When I was in the interview, I was so nervous I couldn't think clearly. As a result, I didn't do as well as I know I could have. The minute I hung up, I even thought of a better solution to the interview question! Any tips for a soon-to-be intern (hopefully!)? Thank you! P.S. I'm preparing by using this guide for phone interviews.

• Dealing With Table Borders In OOXML

Permalink Formatting tables in a document programmatically can be a very complex task.  This is the major reason which we start our document generation projects with templates instead of building components in a document by hand. Borders are on aspect of a table that you may want to fomat.  Borders are used to make certain content in a table stand out.  If you need to conditionally set and remove borders there is something that you need to be aware of.  Even in OOXML you have the concepts of styles, inheriting styles and overriding styles. When Word defines a table it will reference a global style such as “TableGrid”.  This style will include the borders for the table.  Specifically the InsideHorizontalBorder and InsideVerticalBorder define the borders for the cells.  These can be overridden by the TableCellBorders collection of a particular cell.  Adding a double right border on a cell is as easy as the couple of lines of code below. wordprocessing.TableCellBorders borders = new wordprocessing.TableCellBorders(); borders.RightBorder = new RightBorder(){Val = BorderValues.Double, Color = "000000", ThemeColor = ThemeColorValues.Text1, Size = (UInt32Value)4U, Space = (UInt32Value)0U }; cell.TableCellProperties.Append(borders); If I want to revert back to the table’s style for cell borders I simply need to remove all children from the TableCellBorders collection.  It is like removing a class identifier from a TD tag in HTML.  The style in the parent object takes back over. • Mac Joining Active Directory Still Prompts For Authentication

  My Mac is joined to an Active Directory domain. What I expected to see was the same ease of access to file shares and internal websites that Windows computers joined to the domain experience (i.e., no authentication needed; it just uses Windows Integrated Authentication). Instead I am asked for credentials each time I try to access those shares and protected websites (e.g. SharePoint). Is this normal behavior, or is something wrong with my Mac that it prompts me for my username and password for the domain when I access Windows file shares or intranet sites protected by NTLM/Kerberos? • Effect of NonBlockingSendSpecialBuffering setting on Windows

  Recently I ran into some issue related to the UDP sending on Windows. When the application tries to send the packets over UDP in non-blocking mode, often it received socket error 10035 (WSAEWOULDBLOCK) in the send(), so likely that the socket buffer is full. I only seen this issue on Windows 2008 and did not see the same problem on Windows 2003. I was doing some research and found the following article (although it mention TCP) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823764 At the bottom it mentioned updating of the registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\NonBlockingSendSpecialBuffering to 1 But it didn't include further details Would anyone know what is the effect of setting this registry value and what does it do? I tried to research on the web but unable to find any reference, including the msdn website. Any help would be appreciated.

• Is Openness at the heart of the EU Digital Agenda?

  At OpenForum Europe Summit 2010, to be held in Brussels, Autoworld, 11 Parc du Cinquantenaire on Thursday 10 June 2010, a number of global speakers will discuss whether it indeed provides an open digital market as a catalyst for economic growth and if it will deliver a truly open e-government and digital citizenship (see Summit 2010). In 2008, OpenForum Europe, a not-for-profit champion of openness through open standards, hosted one of the most cited speeches by Neelie Kroes, then Commissioner of Competition. Her forward-looking speech on openness and interoperability as a way to improve the competitiveness of ICT markets set the EU on a path to eradicate lock-in forever. On the two-year anniversary of that event, Vice President Kroes, now the first-ever Commissioner of the Digital Agenda, is set to outline her plans for delivering on that vision. Much excitement surrounds open standards, given that Kroes is a staunch believer. The EU's Digital Agenda promises IT standardization reform in Europe and vows to recognize global standards development organizations (fora/consortia) by 2010. However, she avoided the term "open standards" in her new strategy. Markets are, of course, asking why she is keeping her cards tight on this crucial issue. Following her speech, Professor Yochai Benkler, award-winning author of "The Wealth of Networks", and Professor Nigel Shadbolt, appointed by the UK Government to work alongside Sir Tim Berners-Lee to help transform public access to UK Government information join dozens of speakers in the quest to analyse, entertain and challenge European IT policy, people, and documents. • Writing a "Hello World" Device Driver for kernel 2.6 using Eclipse

  Goal I am trying to write a simple device driver on Ubuntu. I want to do this using Eclipse (or a better IDE that is suitable for driver programming). So I: Installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop x86 on a VMWare virtual machine, Installed eclipse-cdt and linux-headers-2.6.38-8 using Synaptic Package Manager, Created a C Project named TestDriver1 and copy-pasted above code to it, Changed the default build command, make, to the following customized build command: make -C /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/build M=/home/isaac/workspace/TestDriver1 The problem I get an error when I try to build this project using eclipse. Here is the log for the build: **** Build of configuration Debug for project TestDriver1 **** make -C /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/build M=/home/isaac/workspace/TestDriver1 all make: Entering directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic' make: *** No rule to make target vmlinux', needed byall'. Stop. make: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic' Interestingly, I get no error when I use shell instead of eclipse to build this project. To use shell, I just create a Makefile containing obj-m += TestDriver1.o and use the above make command to build. So, something must be wrong with the eclipse Makefile. Maybe it is looking for the vmlinux architecture (?) or something while current architecture is x86. Maybe it's because of VMWare? As I understood, eclipse creates the makefiles automatically and modifying it manually would cause errors in the future OR make managing makefile difficult. So, how can I compile this project on eclipse?

  So tonight this convo happened: Intrigued, I viewed the video Lee mentions and found that its the now infamous Brent Ozar video which shows a bug in Word on the Surface RT (you can read this article which talks about the tempest in a teacup that ensued). But Lee is correct – in the video, when Brent starts up Word 2013, we see this: That sure does look like a desktop doesn’t it! But…aren’t Windows RT devices *not* supposed to come with a desktop? Actually, it does. However, it’s not a *full* desktop. From Seth Rosenblatt’s fantastic Windows RT FAQ article: Windows RT will have a Desktop mode, but it will be restricted to pre-installed, Microsoft-produced software. This will include touch-optimized versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote as the new Microsoft Office So yes, there’s a desktop mode in Windows RT but no, you won’t be able to install apps to it. If I send an exact copy of the same email from my email client it goes to the Gmail inbox. The emails are plain text, around 7 lines long and contain a URL link in plain text. As the emails sent from my client are getting through fine I'm thinking that the content isn't the issue. • Building gstreamer_ndk_bundle problems

  I'm trying to build gstreamer_ndk_bundle under Ubuntu 12.4 and I'm failing miserably! I have installed all "glib-dev" packages (packages that in their name have glib and dev), and also I have tried to compile/install glib 2.33.1 (latest) from source, but I always get this error: /home/marko/gstreamer_ndk_bundle/jni/../glib/gobject/gmarshal.c:149: undefined reference to `g_value_get_schar' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [/home/marko/gstreamer_ndk_bundle/obj/local/armeabi/libgobject-2.0.so] Error 1 This means that glib source doesn't have the definition for g_value_get_schar, and since that function was introduced in glib somewhere after version 2.30.0, my guess is that I am not using proper glib! I tried to force gstremaer_ndk_bundle to build with sources from the folder /home/marko/glib-2.33.1/ which I compiled/installed by exporting these env vars: GLIB_GENMARSHAL=/home/marko/glib-2.33.1/gobject/glib-genmarshal GLIB_COMPILE_SCHEMAS=/home/marko/glib-2.33.1/gio/glib-compile-schemas Also I changed gmarshal.h so it includes gmarshal.h from the installed glib folder: #ifndef _marko_glib_loaded #define _marko_glib_loaded #include "/home/marko/glib-2.33.1/gobject/gmarshal.h" #endif But failed in both cases. How can I know what glib is used while compiling gstreamer and install the proper one? How can I force gstreamer_ndk_bundle to use glib sources from the folder I have un-tared/configured/installed and not the system ones, or whatever ones it uses? I read somewhere that I need gstreamer-devel package if I keep getting this error while compiling. Where can I find that package?! Can't Google it out... Has anyone EVER built gstreamer_ndk_bundle and lived to tell the tale?
