• What would the ultimate developer training class look like?

  I think today's typical/traditional 3-5 days developer training classes aren't so great, as you tend to forget half of it shortly after. It's too much one way communication and not enough interaction. Also brain research has shown that this kind of setup is usually not optimal for efficient learning. For clarification, I am referring to professional, commercial, paid classes. However this could also be applied for any kind of studies. How could the ultimate developer training package be setup to really make sure you learn what you are supposed to learn? Would that be more: Multimedia? Exercises? Homeworks? Spread out over time instead of 3-5 compact days? Group projects?

• How to mimic the same fixed-size horizon as in this racing game?

  I am trying to replicate the same horizon (buildings and sky) as in the image below: As you can see, the player has advanced in a straight line, yet the horizon has still the same size: This is my attempt using 3D, while it's okay when the player is on the start line: It's not so great when the player advanced as much as in the image no. 2: This is an overview of where the horizon buildings and sky are located: Obviously this won't achieve such effect when one is close to it, so I've tried to scale up the horizon on all axes but the problem is that the buildings are too small depending where you look at them from. How can one mimic such rendering ?

  We have a few interns here that have orders from college to integrate speaking, reading, and writing French into their internship. All of them are working on developing their own web application, and I'm wondering how we can integrate French into their projects. Here are some things I've come up with: Translate the whole project front-end to French Write French documentation for the project Promote the application in a French community Speak French (exclusively?) to our project managers Any other ideas or suggestions? • easy visualization of usage statistics (web app)

  I have some usage queries for my web app's database, the results of which I want to display graphically. Is there an easy-to-use api that exists for this purpose? I want to show things like average query-time per user (a small user-base), average query time per day, and things like that. I think it would be cool to show these on a two-axis graph. I am displaying this data on my site, so a jQuery/javascript/html solution for rendering information into graphs would be ideal. Thank you :) P.S. I wasn't sure if I should ask this on SO, but I am looking more for which product to use, not how to program with it.

• How to use OpenGL functions from multiples thread?

  I'm writing a small game using OpenGL. I'm implementing basic networking in this game and I'm facing a problem. I have a thread in my client socket class that check for available data, when there are data I raise an event like this : immutable int len = this.m_socket.receive(data); if(len > 0) { this.m_onDataEvent(data); } Then on my game class, I have a function that handle and parse data like this : switch(msgId) { case ProtocolID.CharacterData: // Load terrain with opengl, character model.... Im not able to call opengl functions because my opengl context is created from a different thread. But I really don't know how I can solve this problem, I tried Google but it's really hard to find a solution. I'm using D programming language if it can help.

• Scrolling Box2D DebugDraw

  I'm developing a game using Box2D (javascript implementation - Box2DWeb), and I would like to know how I can pan the debug draw. I know the usual answer is - don't use debug draw, it's just for debugging. I'm not, however not all my objects are on the same screen, and i'd like to see where they are in the physics representation. How can I pan the debug drawing? As you can see the debug draw stuff, is show on the top left, but it only shows a small part of the world. • What is the next promotion for a scrum master

  I'm currently a scrum master. I have been offered a promotion to a role that will allow me to have a wider impact. (more involved in company wide architectural decisions, possible secondment to kick start major projects, etc). The role and title of the job has yet to be decided but my company are open to guidance from me. I'm happy I can mould the role to suit me and the company but I'm unsure about the job title that fits this role. Technical Evangelist has been suggested but i'm not sure that is the correct title. I'm keen to proceed down the technical route. What would you suggest? What other roles do people take after scrum master/technical lead? EDIT: (I am aware that my current role is a mix of a technical lead and scrum master role, but that's how we do it in my company :) )

• Lesser-known Github features that I'm missing out on with Bitbucket? [closed]

  I've been using Bitbucket for my small-team development projects, with the assumption that it is more-or-less a Github clone with pricing that is better for my situation and support for Mercurial (which I don't need). However, I'm seeing there are material-if-not-overwhelming differences, e.g. Github's appealing and useful branches page versus Bitbucket's overly simple branch drop-down list. This makes me wonder: what else am I missing out on? What are the lesser known Github features that folks like me using Bitbucket to save money are missing out on? • Having trouble with font on this blog?

  Sometimes when I open this site on other PC’s the font of the posts turns out be very small and it can be a pain to read the text. Not sure if you’ve noticed the ‘Customize’ bar on top of the page, so I thought I’ll let know. This bar helps you customize the way you want the page to look and saves the settings for you so you don’t have to change it every time. You can change the font size and the main page positioning. The white arrow marks in the image above shows the settings I find convenient.

• Are there plans for system-wide smooth scrolling?

  As Ubuntu seems to be making strategic preparations for a tablet-like experience, I wondered what priority smooth scrolling is for the team. A use case: I read PDFs on a netbook on a daily basis. Even with fullscreen, I have to scroll about every 10-15 seconds. Without smooth scroll, I have to spend a half second or so to "find" my place. Even though it seems like a small inconvenience, the increments add up quite fast. As a result, I look enviously at owners of a certain well-known tablet far too often. • OpenGL 2D Rasterization Sub-Pixel Translations

  I have a tile based 2D engine where the projection matrix is an orthographic view of the world without any scaling applied. Thus: one pixel texture is drawn on the screen in the same size. That all works well and looks nice but if the camera makes a sub-pixel movement small lines appear between the tiles. I can tell you in advance what does not fix the problem: GL_NEAREST texture interpolation GL_CLAMP_TO_EDGE What does “fix” the problem is anchoring the camera to the nearest pixel instead of doing a sub-pixel translation. I can live with that, but the camera movement becomes jerky. Any ideas how to fix that problem without resorting to the rounding trick I do currently?

  This book is more than just  a book about an ASP.NET CMS system -  it has much practical advice and examples for the Dot Net web developer. I liked the use of JQuery to detect that JavaScript was not enabled. One chapter was about MemCached - this one chapter could justify the price of the book if you run a server farm and need to improve performance. • Error installing Japanese game on lubuntu

  So, I have a .iso file for a japanese game. so I used Furious ISO mounter to mount the image, and used wine loader to install the game, but when I try, there's this small windows with two options, most likely YEs and No, with weird symbols and squares in the area there shoudl be text. I installed Japanese Language, but doesn't work. I got the Fake Japanese for Winetrick, but I'm not sure how to use this. Does anyoneno know how to fix this problem?? THank you.

• How much to charge for Wordpress installation?

  I know this isn't properly a technical question but I hope this is ok here. The question is simple: how much should I charge a customer for a Wordpress installation & configuration? Configuration simply means I have to install him a theme (which is not provided by me), various plugins and maybe edit some lines of code here and there to make the whole thing work fine. MORE INFO I don't do this for a living, I'm just doing this for this single customer. He told me he wants to customize some features of the blog which I think will require a bit of code editing, but these will be small modifications, because I already told him that more substantial modifications will be billed separately. I don't know exactly how long will this take, but probably just 1 day for the setup and some more days to adapt the blog to the customer requests which will eventually come up later

• dnsmasq not running

  i installed ubuntu 12.04 on a netbook with 16GB SSD. To keep the installation small i used the mini.iso i got from here. Everything worked fine, but i noticed that dnsmasq does not get started by NetworkManager. On a different machine i installed 12.04 from a regular iso and netstat shows dnsmasq running and listening on port 53. NetworkManager.conf look identically on both systems. The line dns=dnsmasq is present. Although i do not really need dnsmasq - name resolution works fine without - i would like to know the reason why dnsmasq is running on one system, but does not run on the other and how i could adjust this behavior. • Are there any specific workflows or design patterns that are commonly used to create large functional programming applications?

  I have been exploring Clojure for a while now, although I haven't used it on any nontrivial projects. Basically, I have just been getting comfortable with the syntax and some of the idioms. Coming from an OOP background, with Clojure being the first functional language that I have looked very much into, I'm naturally not as comfortable with the functional way of doing things. That said, are there any specific workflows or design patterns that are common with creating large functional applications? I'd really like to start using functional programming "for real", but I'm afraid that with my current lack of expertise, it would result in an epic fail. The "Gang of Four" is such a standard for OO programmers, but is there anything similar that is more directed at the functional paradigm? Most of the resources that I have found have great programming nuggets, but they don't step back to give a broader, more architectural look.

• How to make Classic ASP interesting if you are stuck with it?

  I used to work on a really small outsourcing company (4 programmers and the boss), then when the stress and the frequent long shifts made the situation unbearable I made the switch to a better paid job with a more relaxed schedule that allows me some more free time. The problem, however, is that for the most part, everything is coded in Classic ASP that interfaces with a custom made C++ queueing system that stores everything in AS400 systems. My boss used to be one of the developers that made the initial efforts towards this, and naturally won't ever approve a switch to another languages / technologies despite the increasing difficulty that represents developing today business needs with yesterday tools. I'm pretty much stuck coding with Classic ASP in the foreseeable future, and I'm struggling to find ways to make it at least interesting, as I used to work with .NET and Java previously, and I feel like I'm going backwards... Any advice?

I would really like to start writing apps using MVC, but they fear any type of change. How is the best way to convince/ease them into using MVC? I guess this can go for moving to any new technology.   How do I convert Flash web applications to HTML 5? What is the recommended workflow to learn HTML5? What tools should I install? What SDK? Where to start? How to test? How to debug? What do I read? I'm familiar with Eclipse, should I install Aptana? If yes, what's next? I would like to start lightweight but I would also like to learn the good practices from the beginning. UPDATE: I understand that what is often labelled as "HTML5 development" is in fact a mixture of HTML, CSS, JS and more, however I don't believe that bigger projects are developed in Notepad.
