• Just re-installed Ubuntu 14.04, unstable wireless connection, Lenovo ThinkPad X200

  I re-installed Ubuntu 14.04 as I was having problems with unstable wireless connection... Following re-installation I am having the same problem: connection randomly dropping out, then reconnecting... all my other devices are running well when connected I am a bit of a computer novice so any help would be greatly appreciated... I am running Lenovo ThinkPad X200 laptop... • NVidia with Optimus conflicting in Ubuntu 12.04

  i have recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 in a Intel Ivy Bridge with integrated graphics and NVidia GPU with Optimus tech, however i cant manage it to work properly. I have already passed by the solution of bumblebee project, however iam got the following message when try to run anything with nvidia card( e.g. with optirun firefox): [ERROR]The Bumblebee daemon has not been started yet or the socket path /var/run/bumblebee.socket was incorrect. [ERROR]Could not connect to bumblebee daemon - is it running? • Using Movemail with Thunderbird on Ubuntu

  I'm trying to read local mail with Thunderbird on Ubuntu (with both 12.04 and 13.04). I've followed the instructions found here: How can I access system mail in /var/mail/ via thunderbird? I can read mail on the system using alpine or vim, so I know the mailbox is not empty. When I click the get-mail button, nothing happens. I see no Inbox (or any folder structure) for the specific account. I've set the rights for /var/mail to 1777. Settings server name: localhost username: john How can I get this working? Okay, considering the extra bounty, I would like to get this working like normal mail. The accepted answer from Qasim resulted in a much more usable situation than before - opening mail in Thunderbird with layout. I still face three problems though. When new mail is received in the mailbox, Thunderbird won't see this until after I restart Thunderbird. When Thunderbird is restarted, all mail is reset to unread and deleted mail is undone. This is probably because Thunderbird reads the mail from the /var/mail/www-data file, but doesn't update this file. So after restarting, it simply reads this file again, with the new mail and all old mail. This is probably a postfix issue: mail is sent out to existing mail addresses, but cannot be delivered because the receiving mailserver cannot be reached. This results in "Undelivered mail returned to sender". Only one mailserver can be reached: localhost. Because this is a test system, I don't want real customers to receive mail. I've blocked mail ports in UFW to be sure. When opening the returned mail, I can scroll down and then I see the original mail with proper layout. So I can read the mail, see if the proper images are included, and for me that's workable. Having to restart TB to read new mail - I know when new mail arrives, so I know when to restart. Having old mail restored after a restart - not big problem as well. I can delete the mail file if it gets too much. I know how it works, but it would be nice if it worked like normal.

• Need help to install Ubuntu on Win7 Alienware M17xR3, installing not working

  Please I need help to install linux on my computer to start analyzing Next Generation Sequencing (molecular genetics) for my work. I've tried to install from all different ways and forms and it gave me different errors. First I will describe my system: Alienware M17x R3 Raid Drive 596GB (2x 298 GB) Windows7 primary partition C: The hardrive is divided in 3 primary partitions (can't do 4 don't know why) 1st: Fat16 no name capacity 40mbs almost not used (has files like command.com, dellbio.bin, dellrmk.bin and oobedone.flg) I dont know what this is for but is blocked and non system (Status:none). 2nd: Recovery NTFS 9GB (Status:system) and it seems to have boot files. 3rd: CD: Windos OS (status:boot). And I have 2 Logical drivers F: data for backup and games :D (300gb) G: For trying to install the Linux (Already tried with Fat32, Ext2, ext3 and ext4) Installing with Wubi on F: and G: Instalation looks good on windows ask to restart dos mode appears: try (HD0,0) non-ms:skip try (HD0,1) NTFS5: No Wibildr try (HD0,2) NTFS5: Error: "Prefix" is not set. Installing with Wubi on C: Installation looks good on windows ask to restart dos mode apears: Mount denied becouse NTFS volume is already exclusive opened, the volume may be already mounted or another software may use it which could be identified for example by the help of the 'FUSER' command Mount devdm-4 Could not find installation files /ubuntu/install custom-installation Run 'Chkdsk /r' on windows and restart...blablablalba... that should correct. done this didn't work. Tried installing with USB drive and after burning a CD with the Iso file download from the official website: I've tried the option to install along windows with a G: drive in FAT32, EXT2,3 and 4, I've tried to leave unallocated data, without the driver G at all... appears this everytime: http://i.stack.imgur.com/eo2Ie.png pres ok it ask me to: Not possible to install the boot loader at the location: specify new location: I've tried to select all the drivers non is accepted If I ask to continue without installing the boot loader he ask me to install later by myself which I'm trying to figure it out but I'm not really good to understand how ppl get to the programming part like a DOS to write down couse I'm a newb and I've dont work on dos or linux before... I've read that the boot loader has to be installed on the primary partition, but I'm not sure what I can delete from those 2 partitions that would let me get 1 extra... and it seems that the one that windows use is protected to write down so the software is not touching it... Please if someone have any idea to help me out... I've got a course tomorrow of how to use the software to analyze the data and I wanted to take my computer with me, so I've passed the last 3 days trying to search different ways to solve. • Ubuntu Server Cannot Route to the Internet

  I've been having this problem for weeks now, and I can't seem to figure out the problem. My server can route the local network and serves it well, however it cannot access the internet. It can't be the router because everything else on this lan can route through the router. I've even switched the ethernet port. Any help would be appreciated.   I have been using ubuntu 11.10 for 1 year,today it made me surprised. When I open google chrome it just closes itself. Firstly i thought that it is just for chrome and tried Firefox : It also closes itself and one thing more : I tried desktop programs such as image viewer it also closes itself.I restarted it but there is no changing.What can do this ? is it virus or another system problem ? • Ubuntu 12.04 x64 LTS VPN Server not changing IP

  I used this guide http://silverlinux.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/how-to-pptp-vpn-on-ubuntu-1204-pptpd.html and it worked fine. I'm able to connect but the problem is, that my IP being changed to "localip" not "remote ip". • Cannot install wine on Ubuntu natty 64bit [broken dependency]

  I've just installed Ubuntu natty 64bit. Now I'm trying to install wine and no matter how I do it (Software center/synaptic/terminal), it fails. My problem was, each subnet machine can't ping each other. for example. 192.168.11.101 can't ping 192.168.21.101 but can ping 192.168.128.1 192.168.31.101 can't ping 192.168.21.101 but can ping 192.168.128.1 I am also try to using route add -net 192.168.11.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.11.1 (and also 192.168.21.0/192.168.31.0) at this multi-lan-port machine. • Check ReturnUrl is valid before redirecting

  I'm using ASP.NET Membership and Form Authentication and before redirecting to the returnURL I wanted to validate it. For those unfamiliar with the workflow, basically if you request a page that requires that you are authenticated, you are redirected to a login page. In the URL string you'll see a parameter called returnURL, e.g. http://example.com/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fprotected%2fdefault.aspx Whether you use this in a redirect such as Response.Redirect(returnURL) or indirectly through the FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage method, it passes without validating returnURL. FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage does have a security check that it is isn't leaving the domain, but that still doesn't stop someone from putting enough random characters to cause an error. I tried using System.IO.File.Exists(Server.MapPath(returnURL)) but given enough illegal characters it cause Server.MapPath to error. Note: URLEncoding doesn't work because we are not cleaning a parameter, but the primary URL. Any other suggestions for validating or cleaning the returnURL value?

  Hello, I have a gridview control that has on onclick event bound to every cell. Once a user clicks on a cell it directs them to a booking confirmation page and passes 3 url variables. This booking page is behind a aspnet membership and thus if the user is not logged in they are served the login page. The login page has a redirect to https connection in the onload event using the IsSecure property. The issue is once the user logs in, then is returned to the booking confirmation page I lose 2 of the url vars. If I remove the https redirect, everything works fine, but the user logs on on a http connection, which is not cool. Appreciate and help thanks Reuben

  Hi, I am looking for a solution for user use the browser's back button to navigate to previous page once logged out. I have a web application build in asp.net and using a custom membership provider for authentication and authorization. Everything works fine except when the user click on the logout link to log out of the application and being redirect to a default cover page, if the use click on the BACK BUTTON on their browser, it will actually go back to where they were before and the data will still show up. Of course they can't do anything on that page, click on anything link they will be redirect to a login page again. But having those information display is making a lot users confused. i am just wondering if there is any way i can either clear the browser's history so use can't go BACK, or when they click on the back button and have them redirect to the login page. thanks

  I am upgrading a website written using ASP.NET 1.1 and the logic for the login page includes verifying the credentials, calling FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie() and populating the Session with the user information. I am updating this page to use Login controls and the Membership API and am trying to wrap my head around the concepts that have been changed. Most of the samples I see do not do anything on the login button event handler, so is the logic of setting the cookie abstracted out into the control? Also, how do I check if a user is logged in or not on other pages. Does it still store user information using the Session? How do I check if a user belongs to a particular role or not (Earlier, I would look in the Session object to do something like this) Is the Session a bad way of storing user info? Thanks

• Millions of anonymous ASP.Net profiles!?

  Hi all, some advice needed! Our website receives approximately 50,000 hits a day, and we use anonymous ASP.Net membership profiles/users, this is resulting in millions (4.5m currently) of "active" profiles and the database is 'crawling', we have a nightly task that cleans up all the inactive ones. There is no way that we have 4.5m unique visitors (our county population is only 1/2 million), could this be caused by crawlers and spiders? Also, if we have to live with this huge number of profiles is there anyway of optimising the DB? Thanks Kev

  When I create a user, they can't login until I go into the asp.net configuration and save them. I actually don't change any settings, I just press the save button and then they can login in. What I would like to do is to have the user be able to login once they are created, but I can't seem to get it to work.   If I were to extricate my current membership provider from my solution, i.e. as a dll and expose it as a web service with it's own db, how would I model the relationships with regards to SOA design. For example I have a table: USER id, name, lastname, username, password, role. and table PRODUCT id, name, price, createdate, userid the foreign key being userid to table user. How would I model the relationship and/or query the db. If I wanted to get all products that were uploaded today for example, before I would query: SELECT u.name, u.lastname, u.username, p.* FROM PRODUCT p INNER JOIN USER u ON p.userid = u.id WHERE createdate = '05/05/2010' Now that I don't have the table within the database how would I perform this query?   Hi. I am using ASP.NET 2.0 and its various providers. I have overridden most of the methods I need and have the following custom providers: ProjectMembershipProvider ProjectProfileProvider ProjectRoleProvider In the design of my project, my intention was to wrap the custom providers in a facade - style design - mixing and matching profiling, membership, and roles in API methods to simplify things for developers. But, I am finding that a lot of the methods in my custom providers don't need to change, really. And, it seems silly to wrap a stand-alone method in another method that does exactly the same thing. So - is my approach wrong? Or, should I allow end - users to instantiate the custom providers when needed and the mix/match api when needed? This seems a bit redundant to me but I can't see another way. Advice appreciated. Thanks.

  I need to store a few attributes of an authenticated user (I am using Membership API) and I need to make a choice between using Profiles or adding a new table with UserId as the PK. It appears that using Profiles is quick and needs less work upfront. However, I see the following downsides: The profile values are squished into a single ntext column. At some point in the future, I will have SQL scripts that may update user's attributes. Querying a ntext column and trying to update a value sounds a little buggy to me. If I choose to add a new user specific property and would like to assign a default for all the existing users, would it be possible? My first impression has been that using profiles may cause maintainance headaches in the long run. Thoughts?

• How do I manually log a user in with a MembershipProvider?

  I'm experimenting with writing my own custom MembershipProvider in asp.net and I want to roll my own login page. We do some fairly special stuff at login time so we can't use the default login control so I need a way to manually log a user in. So far I haven't found anything on how to write your own login control so I'm here, wondering how I can manually log a user in via a MembershipProvider. I've tried Membership.ValidateUser("user", "pass"); and while that does call ValidateUser() on my custom MembershipProvider, and it does return true, it doesn't actually log me in. Btw I'm fairly new to the whole MembershipProvider stuff so if I'm not even on the right wavelength, feel free to let me know.

• Different Providers, different websites, still think I'm logged in on the same website.

  I have two web applications in the same solution. They both use different membership/profile and role providers. They are named differently. When I run the solution, and visit one website, and login everything is fine. I then go to the other solution and it thinks I am already logged in and the profile provider tries to load profile properties that do not exist. How can I keep them separate, so when I try to log in on one site, it doesn't think I'm still logged in on the other.
