• Disk Drive not working

  The CD/DVD drive on my sisters' (I'm helping her shift from Win. XP (now officially deprecated by Microsoft) to Ubuntu) system. Now, it may end up being a failed attempt, all together (Almost the whole last year (when she's been on XP) the disk drive hasn't (not even powering on) been working.), I just want to make sure I've explored every remote possibility. Because I figure, "Huh, now that I've got Ubuntu running, instead of XP, that (just) might make a difference.". I have tried using the sudo lshw command in the terminal, to (seemingly) no avil, but, who knows, you might be able to make something out of it. • ASP.Net file upload with an empty posted files collection

  I have an ASP.NET file upload control which sits as part of a form. The file upload control is on the content page while the form definition is on a master page across the site. I've added multipart/form-enc to the form on the master page. I'm using jQuery to submit the form as I show a dialog box from jQuery UI. When I post, no file is returned to the server. The file upload control has no file and HttpFileCollection is empty. How can I find the posted file?

• What could make GetCursorPos return incorrect coordinates of {0,0} ?

  We are seeing bad behavior in an application when it runs on Server 2008 (not R2). This is a WinForms application, and Control.MousePosition is returning {0,0} no matter where the mouse is on the screen... Control.MousePosition just makes a P/Invoke call to Win32 api GetCursorPos(). There is a control in our library that calls SetWindowsHookEx to hook WH_CALLWNDPROCRET for our entire process. I'm suspicious of this code, but tracing statements show that we're getting in + out of that hook cleanly. What else should I be looking for? Thanks, Dave

• Looking for a component (.NET or COM/ActiveX) that can play AVI files in a WinForms app

  I'm looking for something like the Windows Media Player control that can be hosted on a form. The WMP doesn't work for me because I need a control that can play a continuously-appended playlist of AVI files in sequence, so that the transition from one file to the next happens seamlessly (i.e. without any glitches or pauses in the video and audio). With WMP, there's always a delay between files of half a second or so. Does anyone know of a control (it can be either commercial or open-source) that can do this? I assume anything like this wraps DirectX, and that's OK too.

• What's Old is New Again

  Last night I told my son he could stream music to his tablet "from the cloud" (in this case, the Amazon Cloud).  He paused, then said, "what is the cloud?"  I replied, "a bunch of servers connected to the internet."  Apparently he had visions of something much more magnificent.  Another similar term is "big data."  These marketing terms help to quickly convey topics but are oversimplifications that are open to many interpretations.  At their core, those terms a shiny packages holding recycled ideas. I see many headlines declaring big data changes everything, but it doesn't.  Savvy retailers have been dealing with large volumes of data since the electronic cash register was invented.  But the there have a been a few changes to the landscape that make big data a topic of conversation: 1. Computing power has caught up to storage volumes. Its now possible to more thoroughly analyze the copious volumes of data retailers have been squirreling away.  CPUs are faster, sold state drives more plentiful, and new ways to store and search data are available.  My iPhone is more power than the computer used in the Apollo mission to the moon. 2. Unstructured data is everywhere.  The Web used to be where retailers published product information, but now users are generating the bulk of the content in the form of comments, videos, and "likes."  The variety of information available to retailers is huge, and it meaning difficult to discern. 3. Everything is connected.  Looking at a report from my router, there are no less than 20 active devices on my home network.  We can track the location of mobile phones, tag products with RFID, and set our thermostats (I love my Nest) from a thousand miles away.  Not only is there more data, but its arriving at higher velocity. Careful readers will note the three Vs that help define so-called big data: volume, variety, and velocity. We now have more volume, more variety, and more velocity and different technologies to deal with them.  But at the heart, the objectives are still the same: Informed decisions Accurate forecasts Improved optimizations So don't let the term "big data" throw you off the scent.  Retailers still need to execute on the basics.  But do take a fresh look at the data that's available and the new technologies to process it.  The landscape will continue to change and agile organizations will always be reevaluating their approaches.  You can just add some more weapons to the arsenal.

  So I'm building a peice of UI that might me in a dialog window or might be in embedded in part of a bigger page. I don't have alot of experience with WPF, but in ASP.NET you always used UserControls, because their wasn't anyt really generic UI inherit to inherit from (and in a way UserControl was just a div). My coworker has written alot of controls that inherit directly from stackpanel. That seems like a decent way of doing things. But when I went to create a control for the code I was going to write I was presented with a dialog that only included the UserControl, which I wasn't that familiar with in the context of WPF. So can someone explain to me the difference from building a control that inherits from user control vs inheriting directly from a stackPanel?

  I'm planning on creating a C# Windows Forms app as an extension for a third-party Win32 application but I'm stumped as to how to do this right now. The farthest I've gotten is knowing it involves Win32 Hooking and that there's this open source project called EasyHook that's supposed to allow me to do this. I'd like to know how I can get the text from a textbox or some other data from a control in a third-party Win32 application. The text/data in a control is to be captured from the external application's running window the moment the user presses a button. I guess the question can be summed up as follows: How do you determine the event to hook to when the user clicks a certain button? How do you get the value displayed by a Win32 control at the time the button is clicked?

  Short version All I need is that, in a ModalPopUp, when the DoubleClick event of a ListItem fires, the click event of my OK button should be executed. Detail I have a ModalPopUpExtender, which hosts a user control. The user control has an OK and a Cancel button. Along with that, it has a dynamic ListBox added to it. So far, I've considered the following possible solutions: Use Ajax.Net. But, I cannot afford to have a WebMethod. Use a ClientScriptCallBack. • What is the best method for implementing mouse wheel activity in Delphi VCL forms?

  As a long time user of Delphi 7, I've rolled my own mouse wheel handling in a few controls but lately I've noticed that some recent applications only need the mouse cursor to be placed over a control (e.g a list box or tree view) for the mouse wheel activity to cause that control to scroll. This feels nice (as opposed to having to click focus a control before it responds to the wheel. Now I've moved to Delphi 2010 I'm wondering what is the 'correct' behavior? And what can I use in Delphi that avoids me having to bodge this with my own solutions now? Thanks.

However, when adding controls which themselves contain a scriptmanagerProxy we run into the problem that the newed up Page object doesn't contain either a ScriptManager or the HtmlForm in which the ScriptManager needs to run. • ASP.Net AJAX controls, adding via .ashx page

  Okay, this is a continuation of a previous question of mine, but it is distinct enough to be its own question. Based on user interaction, I'm calling a .ashx handler via a jquery ajax call, and that handler is building some html for me that includes some Telerik controls like a masked textbox (masked for a phone number like "(###) ###-####". I got around all the hurdles of using Render() to get the html output of a server control even when it doesn't have a "Page" object or a ScriptHandler object. However, when I show the control to a user, I see the mask in the text of the textbox, but the mask doesn't "work" in the sense that when a user starts typing, it is as if the mask is really just text. So, my question is, after putting the html code out for a masked textbox, how do I tell whatever javascript is supposed to mask the input to really start masking on that specific control? I really hope this made sense. Please tell me if you need any clarification.

  Hi, I am devolping a web application.the problem is that i am using a login control (not a .NET control) which is a part of master page and is acessible from all pages. if user log In from a page the login control updates itself and displlay some statistics of logged In user but the specific page does not reload. (some options on page are visible only to authenticated users, so that after login, page should be reloaded to display such options) after logIn methoed I wrote Reponse.Redirect(Request.Url.AbsoluteUri) after this the browser response the "Page cannot be displayed" It would be of great help to me. • Can I set a property on an object that is only declared on the instance type, when I don't know the

  Let me explain. I have a List into which I am adding various ASP.NET controls. I then wish to loop through the list and set a CssClass, however not every Control supports the property CssClass. What I would like to do is test if the underlying instance type supports the CssClass property and set it, but I'm not sure how to do the conversion prior to setting the property since I don't know the type of each Control object. I know that I can use typeof or x.GetType(), but I'm not sure how to use these to convert the controls back to the instance type in order to test for and then set the property. • Need help to install Ubuntu on Win7 Alienware M17xR3, installing not working

  Please I need help to install linux on my computer to start analyzing Next Generation Sequencing (molecular genetics) for my work. I've tried to install from all different ways and forms and it gave me different errors. First I will describe my system: Alienware M17x R3 Raid Drive 596GB (2x 298 GB) Windows7 primary partition C: The hardrive is divided in 3 primary partitions (can't do 4 don't know why) 1st: Fat16 no name capacity 40mbs almost not used (has files like command.com, dellbio.bin, dellrmk.bin and oobedone.flg) I dont know what this is for but is blocked and non system (Status:none). 2nd: Recovery NTFS 9GB (Status:system) and it seems to have boot files. 3rd: CD: Windos OS (status:boot). And I have 2 Logical drivers F: data for backup and games :D (300gb) G: For trying to install the Linux (Already tried with Fat32, Ext2, ext3 and ext4) Installing with Wubi on F: and G: Instalation looks good on windows ask to restart dos mode appears: try (HD0,0) non-ms:skip try (HD0,1) NTFS5: No Wibildr try (HD0,2) NTFS5: Error: "Prefix" is not set. Installing with Wubi on C: Installation looks good on windows ask to restart dos mode apears: Mount denied becouse NTFS volume is already exclusive opened, the volume may be already mounted or another software may use it which could be identified for example by the help of the 'FUSER' command Mount devdm-4 Could not find installation files /ubuntu/install custom-installation Run 'Chkdsk /r' on windows and restart...blablablalba... that should correct. done this didn't work. Tried installing with USB drive and after burning a CD with the Iso file download from the official website: I've tried the option to install along windows with a G: drive in FAT32, EXT2,3 and 4, I've tried to leave unallocated data, without the driver G at all... appears this everytime: http://i.stack.imgur.com/eo2Ie.png pres ok it ask me to: Not possible to install the boot loader at the location: specify new location: I've tried to select all the drivers non is accepted If I ask to continue without installing the boot loader he ask me to install later by myself which I'm trying to figure it out but I'm not really good to understand how ppl get to the programming part like a DOS to write down couse I'm a newb and I've dont work on dos or linux before... I've read that the boot loader has to be installed on the primary partition, but I'm not sure what I can delete from those 2 partitions that would let me get 1 extra... and it seems that the one that windows use is protected to write down so the software is not touching it... Please if someone have any idea to help me out... I've got a course tomorrow of how to use the software to analyze the data and I wanted to take my computer with me, so I've passed the last 3 days trying to search different ways to solve.
