• My father is a doctor. He is insisting on writing a database to store non-critical patient information, with no programming background

  So, my father is currently in the process of "hacking" together a database using FileMaker Pro, a GUI based databasing tool for his small (4 doctor) practice. The database will be used to help ease the burden on reporting from medical machines, streamlining quite a clumsy process. He's got no programming background, and seems to be doing everything in his power to not learn things correctly. He's got duplicate data types, no database-enforced relationships (foreign/primary key constraints) and a dozen other issues. He's doing it all by hand via GUI tool using Youtube videos. My issue is, that whilst I want him to succeed 100%, I don't think it's appropriate for him to be handling these types of decisions. How do I convince him that without some sort of education in these topics, a hacked together solution is a bad idea? He's can be quite stubborn and I think he sees these types of jobs as "childs play" How should I approach this? Is it even that bad an idea - or am I correct in thinking he should hire a proper DBA/developer to handle this so that it doesn't become a maintenance nightmare? NB: I am a developer consultant of 4 years and I've seen my share of painful customer implementations.

• Can you say "Architect?"

  Photo by Jennifer Ortiz In his article, It's Time To Occupy IT, AIIM CEO and president John Mancini examines the evolution of "Systems of Engagement," the social technologies that are transforming how customers and employees relate to and interact with companies. Surviving the disruption that transformation entails is a matter of when, rather than if, a given organization embraces the change. But as Mancini points out, that transformation will require a "new breed" of IT professional: "While addressing this kind of challenge requires technical skills, it also requires process and customer acumen more often found in the business than in our IT departments. It requires a new type of information professional, whose expertise includes technical and domain knowledge, but who also has an idea of how the pieces of a process that spans the worlds of Systems of Record and Systems of Engagement should fit together. Gartner estimates that the demand for this new breed of information professional will grow by 50 percent by 2015." Though Mancini makes no reference to the title, the skills he desribes are those of the IT architect. While the specific definition of the role remains fodder for seemingly endless discussion and debate on various social networks and forums, the fact remains that the skills required for success in the evolving world of IT will increasingly involve a deep understanding of how all the pieces fit together.

• Be There: Tinkerforge/NetBeans Platform Integration Course

  Tinkerforge is an electronic construction kit. It exposes a number of API bindings, including, of course, Java. The nice thing also is that Tinkerforge products are open source, both on the hardware and software levels, so that you can take their bases as a starting point for your own modifications. "The TinkerForge system is a set of pre-built electronics boards that are built in such a way that you can stack the boards (known as bricks), attach accessories (known as bricklets), and have your prototype and and running quickly. Unlike systems, such as the Arduino or Launchpad, the TinkerForge has to be attached to a computer and the computer does all of the work. With an easy set of application programming interfaces (APIs) available in C/C++, C#, Java, PHP, and Ruby, the system is easy to interface and program over USB in a snap." (from this useful article) Henning Krüp, who has arranged several NetBeans Platform Certified Training Courses in the past, in the Nordhorn/Lingen area in Germany, had the inspired idea to focus the next course on integration with Tinkerforge. In other words, the whole course will be focused on creating a standalone Java desktop application that leverages the NetBeans Platform to interact with Tinkerforge! • Group Matchmaking

  Consider different groups(1 or more players) queuing together, we want to make 2 opposing teams containing each the same amount of players while keeping the groups together. At the same time we want to make both teams' average ranking as close as possible. Now also consider we have as a working set the subset of groups currently queuing within a given ranking range. For an example, let's say we have the following groups, ordered by queuing time: Id, playerCount, totalRank, avgRank 0, 3, 126, 42 1, 2, 60, 30 2, 1, 25, 25 3, 2, 80, 40 4, 1, 40, 40 5, 1, 20, 20 6, 3, 150, 50 for this specific subset, the expected output should ideally be: team1: 0, 1 (total: 186) team2: 2, 5, 6 (total: 195) up to now the solution I have been using is to balance out each team by making each team pick the group with highest ranking within the subset turn by turn. The team who picks is the one with the currently lowest average rank unless one is already full. If one team is already full the other team tries to complete itself with groups that would make the rank gap as small as possible. This solution turns out to have issues with frequent edge cases and I'm looking for a better solution, or some fine-tuning that could be made. In most cases, players seems to want teams of 5 people and queue in group of 2. Our average subset when 2 teams of 5 are chosen is made of about 14 players if that may be of any help.

• Oracle Database 12c and Oracle Solaris 11 DTrace

  As you may have heard, Oracle Database 12c is now available for Oracle Solaris and Oracle Linux. Among other things, that means we now have the opportunity to share some of the cool things the Oracle Database and Oracle Solaris engineering teams have been doing together. And here's a good one: In this screencast, Jon Haslam describes how on Oracle Solaris 11, DTrace is now integrated into Oracle Database V$ views to provide a top-to-bottom picture of a database transaction I/O -- from storage devices, through the Oracle Solaris kernel, up to Oracle Database 12c itself: With this end-to-end view, you can easily identify I/O outliers -- transactions that are taking an unusually long time to complete -- and use this comprehensive data to identify and mitigate storage system problems that were previously extremely hard to debug. This is a great example of the power of DTrace, which is just about to celebrate its 10th anniversary in the wild. The screencast has some nice examples of DTrace's power on its own, as well as diving into the DTrace/Oracle Database 12c synergy. • Is there such thing as a "theory of system integration"?

  There is a plethora of different programs, servers, and in general technologies in use in organizations today. We, programmers, have lots of different tools at our disposal to help solve various different data, and communication challenges in an organization. Does anyone know if anyone has done an serious thinking about how systems are integrated? Let me give an example: Hypothetically, let's say I own a company that makes specialized suits a'la Iron Man. In the area of production, I have CAD tools, machining tools, payroll, project management, and asset management tools to name a few. I also have nice design space, where designers show off their designs on big displays, some touch, some traditional. Oh, and I also have one of these new fangled LEED Platinum buildings and it has number of different computer controlled systems, like smart window shutters that close when people are in the room, a HVAC system that adjusts depending on the number of people in the building, etc. What I want to know is if anyone has done any scientific work on trying to figure out how to hook all these pieces together, so that say my access control system is hooked to my payroll system, and my phone system allowing my never to swipe a time card, and to have my phone follow me throughout the building. This problem is also more than a technology challenge. Every technology implementation enables certain human behaviours, so the human must also be considered as a part of the system. Has anyone done any work in how effectively weave these components together? FYI: I am not trying to build a system. I want to know if anyone has thoroughly studied the process of doing a large integration project, how they develop their requirements, how they studied the human behaviors, etc.

• PCI Compliance Book Suggestion

  I am always looking for good books on security, compliance and of course, PCI.  Here is one I think you will find very useful. "PCI Compliance, Third Edition: Understand and Implement Effective PCI Data Security Standard Compliance" by Branden Williams and Anton Chuvakin.  [Fair disclosure - Branden and I work together on the Information Systems Security Association Journal's editorial board.]   The primary reason I like this book is that the authors take a holistic architectural approach to PCI compliance and that to me is the most safe and sane way to approach PCI.  Using such an architectural approach to PCI is, in my humble opinion, the underlying intent of PCI.  Don't create a checklist of the PCI DSS and then map a solution to each.  That is a recipe for disaster.  Instead, look at how the different components and their configurations work together in a synergistic fashion.  In short, create a security architecture and governance framework (the ISO 27000 series is a good place to start) that begins with an evaluation of the requirements laid down in the PCI DSS, as well as your other applicable compliance, business and technical requirements.  By developing an integrated security architecture you should be able to not only address current requirements, but also be in a position to quickly address future ones as well.

  I would like to information about Oracle ADF Product Management's great work ; ADF Architecture TV. This channel has various subjects such as before start a new ADF or any software project what will you need or how can you select team member's skills, or how to implement and design an ADF projects etc. When developing with a new technology, one of the challenges for technical staff is to both learn the features of the technology and how to implement them, and also consider the broader concepts of design, engineering and architecture. • Baseline for GIS Applications

  The application I introduced here yesterday can best be understood via its author's explanation: "As I developed several different WorldWind-based applications, I noticed that they all started out the same. Terramenta was born so I wouldn't have to recreate the baseline every time, I could just provide NetBeans plugin modules to introduce the new features required by different projects." So, to try it out for myself, I checked out the sources from the Mercurial repo today, built them, and ran them. hg clone https://bitbucket.org/heidtmare/terramenta On Windows, things worked fine, on Ubuntu they didn't because the relevant native libraries aren't provided yet out of the box. Here's the result: The above provides the WorldWind globe, together with all the standard options, e.g., for showing names and other WorldWind features, together with several features that I don't understand yet, such as tools for creating shapes and a recorder for replaying sequences. The complete application is like this, i.e., one single functionality module is provided, which exposes several API packages that can be extended: It would really be cool if the above module could also be added to a Maven-based application via a reference to a Maven repository, in the way that Timon Veenstra and the AgroSense team have made available their GeoViewer. One cool thing from the GeoViewer solution is the Flamingo menubar, which I added to Terramenta by simply putting the dependency below into the application POM: <dependency>    <groupId>nl.cloudfarming.client</groupId>    <artifactId>menu</artifactId>    <version>1.0.24</version></dependency> The result, without doing anything other than the above: I am looking forward to helping to document the use cases and developer scenarios for Terramenta! • Encapsulating code in F# (Part 2)

  In part one of this series I showed an example of encapsulation within a local definition. This is useful to know so that you are aware of the scope of value holders etc. but what I am more interested in is encapsulation with regards to generating useful F# code libraries in .Net, this is done by using Namespaces and Modules. Lets have a look at some C# code first… using System; namespace EncapsulationNS { public class EncapsulationCLS { public static void TestMethod() { Console.WriteLine("Hello"); } } } Pretty simple stuff… now the F# equivalent…. namespace EncapsulationNS module EncapsulationMDL = let TestFunction = System.Console.WriteLine("Hello") ()   Even easier… lets look at some specifics about F# namespaces… Namespaces are open. meaning you can have multiple source files and assemblies can contribute to the same namespace. So, Namespaces are a great way to group modules together, so the question needs to be asked, what role do modules play. For me, the F# module is in many ways similar to the vb6 days of modules. In vb6 modules were separate files and simply allowed us to group certain methods together. I find it easier to visualize F# modules this way than to compare them to the C# classes. However that being said one is not restricted to one module per file – there is flexibility to have multiple modules in one code file however with my limited F# experience I would still recommend using the file as the standard level of separating modules as it is very easy to then find your way around a solution. An important note about interop with F# and other .Net languages. I wrote a blog post a while back about a very basic F# to C# interop. If I were to reference an F# library in a C# project (for instance ‘TestFunction’), in C# it would show this method as a static method call, meaning I would not have to instantiate an instance of the module.

• Dell Powerdge840 2.4GHz 64 bit quad core

  I am having an issue, where I have changed the boot order to cdrom and turned off hd boot all together and still my system is unable to detect ubuntu and claims, no boot device found. Some additional information: When this same cd is inserted and dell is booted into win 2003 server (which is what is installed on this machine), it detects the cd drive but not the cd at all (keeps asking me to insert disc) I have also created a bootable flash drive using LinuxLive USB creator and when this is selected in boot order again am told no boot device detected. I was speaking to dell and they suggested perhaps there are no drivers on the actual ubuntu installation for the hardware on this Dell and hence the failure of this dell to detect the ubuntu cd. Now, I don't know too much about computers, but this last bit confused me a bit. If the system detects the hardware (when it is booting it sees the cd rom and in bios it sees when the flash drive is connected), then shouldn't it be able to read what is on those drives? However, if there is some firmware or software install that needs to happen, could someone please tell me where to find the correct drivers for ubuntu and dell poweredge to work together? Shall I be installing the desktop version or the server edition, also, 32 bit or 63 bit? Thank you in advance.

• How to Draw Lines on the Screen (Part 2)

  In part 1, I showed how you can click on the screen to create widgets and then connect those widgets together. But that's not really drawing, is it? (And I'm surprised nobody made that point in the comments to that blog entry.) Drawing doesn't really revolve around connecting dots together. It's more about using a free-flow style and being able to randomly write stuff onto a screen, without constraints. Something like this: I achieved the above by changing one line of code from the original referred to above. Instead of using a "mousePressed" event, I'm now using a "mouseDragged" event. That's all. And now the widgets are created when I drag my mouse on the scene. (I removed the rectangular select action, since that's also invoked during dragging and since that doesn't apply to the above scenario.) Now, the next step is to rewrite the NetBeans Platform Paint Application Tutorial, so that the Visual Library is used. That would be pretty cool.

  Hi, I have a legacy 32-bit application written in Borland's C++ Builder. I need to show specific pages from within a HtmlHelp file programmatically. Until now I've been doing this via HtmlHelp.ocx, but this does not work on x64 versions of Windows Vista / Windows7 as described in this thread. I can't compile the application as 64-bit executable. Therefore the only workaround I have found so far is to create a 32-bit component implementing a COM object which loads and calls into the 32-bit DLL, and exposes the 32-bit DLL interface as a COM interface. That sounds far too complicated just to display a chml file with a specific topic. There must be something else. But what is it?

• Learning Visual C++ 2008 and C++ at the same time? Any resources to recommend?

  Hey guys, I am trying to learn Visual C++ 2008 and C++ at the same time to get involved with sourcemod, a server side modding tool for valve games. However I have never touched Visual C++ or C++ in general, and doing some preliminary research I am quite confused on these different versions of C++ (mfc, cli, win32), and why a lot of people seem to hate Visual C++ and use something like Borland instead. I really learn visually, and have used videos from places like Lynda.com with great success. I was wondering if anyone had any exceptional resources they had come across to teach Visual C++ 2k8, with its intricacies and setting up the IDE along with C++ at the same time. Books would be nice, but videos would be preferred, and I don't mind paying for resources. Thanks in advance!

I know Delphi has a big community since years (10 plus)and I believe you could create native windows exe before Visual Basic got to speed (with all its dll's nighmare). But is it future-proof ? Is there a need or market for a non-crossplatform native all-in-one executable ? Will Embarcardero ex Codegear ex Borland continue to push it ? Why is it so expensive ? Who (non company) can afford it, in order to learn it ?

• Get correct output from UTF-8 stored in VarChar using Entity Framework or Linq2SQL?

  Borland StarTeam seems to store its data as UTF-8 encoded data in VarChar fields. I have an ASP.NET MVC site that returns some custom HTML reports using the StarTeam database, and I would like to find a better solution for getting the correct data, for a rewrite with MVC2. I tried a few things with Encoding GetBytes and GetString, but I couldn't get it to work (we use mostly Delphi at work); then I figured out a T-SQL function to return a NVarChar from UTF-8 stored in a VarChar, and created new SQL views which return the data as NVarChar, but it's slow. The actual problem appears like this: “description†instead of “description”, in both SSMS and in a webpage when using Linq2SQL Is there a way to get the proper data out of these fields using Entity Framework or Linq2SQL?

• Unable to remove package from Delphi 2005

  I needed to reinstall a package, DrRX.bpl. I removed it from the package list, and trying to install a newer version of the same package. I've replaced the old component's dir with the new one. When I open the new DrRX.bpl and click install, I get the error "Package C:\Program Files\Borland\BDS\3.0\components\rx work\output\DrRx.bpl cannot be installed because another package with the same basename is already loaded (DrRx.bpl)" I cannot find any reference to DrRX in my package list, DrRX does not appear in the Tool Palette. How do I locate where Delphi thinks this is installed, and remove it, so I can reinstall the package?

• Which is the best Linux C/C++ debugger (or front-end to gdb) to help teaching programming?

  I teach a sort of "lite" C++ programming course to novices ("lite" meaning no pointers, no classes, just plain old C, plus references and STL string and vectors). Students have no previous experience in programming, so I believe that using an interactive debugger would help them understand program flow, variables, and recursion. The course is taught in Linux. Teaching them to use gdb is just overkill (they will not use nor understand most features). I just need something simple but easy to use: to see at which line the program is now, what is in the stack (local variables, previous calls, etc.). I look something similar to old Turbo Pascal or Turbo C++ Borland's debugger, or Visual Studio debugger. Thank you,

When the external editor is closed and changed my OLE object I have to do something with this OLE object inside TOLeContainer. The problem is I can't catch a moment when the external editor is closed. OnDeactivate event is not working. • Compiling C Source with Makefile in Windows

  I'm trying to compile a downloaded program in Windows. The program is usually run in Linux, but is programmed to also run in Windows (the code has #if defined(_WIN32)'s in it, and claims to work with borland free tools). When I try to use make from the command line, it tells me "Incorrect command line argument: -C". In the makefile, there are many lines that say "make -C" followed by a directory name. Does this syntax not work in Windows? What is a correct way to do this? Is there any way to compile this for native use in Windows with this makefile?
