• Problems with Maverick upgrade

  I upgraded to Maverick 10.10 from Lucid. I have an old Toshiba Satellite with a 1.1 MHz and 256MB RAM. Initially I couldn't get my wireless to work. That solved itself after installing various updates and programs. The problems that remain are: I have to authorize at least 2 times at start-up. This machine is Ubuntu only. No boot load screen. I have a ton of programs and system directories that are in my home folder. Is this normal? It is difficult to wake the computer from sleep. Usually I just shut it down and restart. Tonight I waited and got a message about corrupt memory. The computer takes forever to do just about everything. Slow to start programs or doing things on the web. I am a longtime Mac user (since 1986). I also manage a network of several windoze machines. I am definitely a GUI guy and do very little in the terminal so I really need to know where to begin to get things straightened out. Can I rescue this machine without wiping it and doing a fresh install? This is basically a hobby machine. Aside from all the programs and upgrades I've installed, I have almost no files or documents to worry about saving. Anyone have any ideas about the problems I'm having and the best way to proceed? • Check a list of packages to install with apt-get

  I am writing a post-install script for Ubuntu in Perl (same script as seen here). One of the steps is to install a list of packages. The problem is that if apt-get install fails in some of many different ways for any one of the packages the script dies badly. I would like to prevent that from happening. This happens because of the ways that apt-get install fails for packages that it doesn't like. For example when I try to install a nonsense word (i.e. typed in the wrong package name) $ sudo apt-get install oblihbyvl Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package oblihbyvl but if instead the package name has been obsoleted (installing handbrake from ppa) $ sudo apt-get install handbrake Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package handbrake is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package 'handbrake' has no installation candidate $ apt-cache search handbrake handbrake-cli - versatile DVD ripper and video transcoder - command line handbrake-gtk - versatile DVD ripper and video transcoder - GTK GUI I have tried parsing the results of apt-cache and apt-get -s install to try to catch all possibilities before doing the install, but I seem to keep finding new ways to allow failures to continue to the actual install system command. My question is, is there some facility either in Perl (e.g. a module, though I would like to avoid installing modules if possible as this is supposed to be the first thing run after a new install of Ubuntu) or apt-* or dpkg that would let me be sure that the packages are all available to be installed before installing and if not fail gracefully in some way that lets the user decide what to do?

• Trouble using xib files in libraries

  Hi there, I'm having some trouble working with libraries and included xib files. Let me explain my situation first. I've got a project that's running pretty good. Now I need a part of my project as a library for another customer who want's to use some of the functionality in his app. I've created a library with help of that highly recommended article. My customer should be able to initialize a main view controller like this: LibraryMainViewController *lmvc = [[LibraryMainViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"LibraryMainViewController.xib" bundle:foo]; That for sure leads to an error when I try to present that view controller modally. I'm not sure what bundle I have to use here. I tried something like [NSBundle bundleForClass:[SomeClassInTheLibrary class]]; but that didn't solve the problem. I would be glad if someone could tell me how to actually use a xib file in that kind of situation. Thanks –f

• Using PHP OCI8 with 32-bit PHP on Windows 64-bit

  The world migration from 32-bit to 64-bit operating systems is gaining pace. However I've seen a couple of customers having difficulty with the PHP OCI8 extension and Oracle DB on Windows 64-bit platforms. The errors vary depending how PHP is run. They may appear in the Apache or PHP log: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\ext\php_oci8_11g.dll' - %1 is not a valid Win32 application. or Warning oci_connect(): OCIEnvNlsCreate() failed. There is something wrong with your system - please check that PATH includes the directory with Oracle Instant Client libraries Other than IIS permission issues a common cause seems to be trying to use PHP with libraries from an Oracle 64-bit database on the same machine. There is currently no 64-bit version of PHP on http://php.net/ so there is a library mismatch. A solution is to install Oracle Instant Client 32-bit and make sure that PHP uses these libraries, while not interferring with the 64-bit database on the same machine. Warning: The following hacky steps come untested from a Linux user: Unzip Oracle Instant Client 32-bit and move it to C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64\INSTANTCLIENT_11_2. You may need to do this in a console with elevated permissions. Edit your PATH environment variable and insert C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\INSTANTCLIENT_11_2 in the directory list before the entry for the Oracle Home library. Windows makes it so all 32-bit applications that reference C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 actually see the contents of the C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64 directory. Your 64-bit database won't find an Instant Client in the real, physical C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory and will continue to use the database libraries. Some of our Windows team are concerned about this hack and prefer a more "correct" solution that (i) doesn't require changing the Windows system directory (ii) doesn't add to the "memory" burden about what was configured on the system (iii) works when there are multiple database versions installed. The solution is to write a script which will set the 64-bit (or 32-bit) Oracle libraries in the path as needed before invoking the relevant bit-ness application. This does have a weakness when the application is started as a service. As a footnote: If you don't have a local database and simply need to have 32-bit and 64-bit Instant Client accessible at the same time, try the "symbolic" link approach covered in the hack in this OTN forum thread. Reminder warning: This blog post came untested from a Linux user.

Now I want to keep version 4 nightly, but replace the 3.7 nightly with 3.6 stable. I've already removed the 3.7 nightly, but can't figure how to install 3.6 stable (systemwide). It is not supported to install the Feature Pack patch into an Oracle Home which contains JDeveloper and the runtime components (WebLogic, SOA, BPM, etc.) If you are installing on the same machine, like a developer’s machine for example, you should install JDeveloper into a separate Oracle (Middleware) Home.

  I have a VPS that is managed and am mysteriously running out of space, I think I found a few files I can delete. So just double checking it's ok to delete the Perl install files: /root/perl588installer.tar.gz (pretty sure this can go) /root/perl588installer/ (wasn't sure if this can go, I'm thinking it's just used when perl is installed) I rarely install this kind of thing myself but when I do I'm sure you can delete these files. • Cannot get past "Installation type" screen after choosing "Install Ubuntu inside Windows 7"

  After getting to the screen that states: "This computer currently has Windows 7 on it. What would you like to do?" I am not able to continue with the installation process after selecting "Install Ubuntu inside Windows 7". I am running Ubuntu off a USB drive after using UNetBootin and then selecting the "Install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS" shortcut. Everything included on the online guides worked perfectly up to this point. Very new to Linux, please help?
