  • Visual Studio XSD Tool: Generate Collections Rather Than Arrays

    I generated some C# classes from an XSD using the Visual Studio XSD utility and it generated arrays for storing a collection of elements, rather than one of the built-in generic Collection<T> (or related) classes. None of the command line parameters mentioned in xsd /? mention anything about generating collections rather than arrays, but I know that this can be done with web service proxy classes that Visual Studio generates, so I figured it must be possible. Does anybody know how to have the XSD utility generate collection classes rather than arrays?

  • Wiki based requirements engineering tool

    Hi, I'm looking to to build a wiki based tool the helps/aides in the requirements engineering process. More specifically I am hoping to end up with a tool that helps inexperienced users easily create and design requirements documents on a wiki platform. I was wondering if there exist any wiki/wiki platforms that either already exist or are easily extendible or would be worth looking at that for this purpose. For instance some of the features I was hoping to add would be to add structure to a document so that information is filled out in a standardised manner. Another idea I was looking at was to somehow create relationships between different types of documents (for example- a goal diagram gets evolves/ helps in the development of the class diagram). So far I have come across FOSwiki which claims to to fully customisalble...but I'm not sure what it means and what I can really do with that. Any input on FOSwiki is also highly appreciated.

  • Dependency Management tool for REST endpoints

    I work in a Rest Oriented envrionment. The number of endpoints is quite large and span multiple applications. The dependencies between the endpoints are large in number as well and not very well planned. Applications have cyclic dependencies amongst each other. Unfortunately, there is no central location where all the endpoints are documented and declare dependencies ( the endpoints that they inturn call ). Is there a tool that will help in such dependency management. I tried searching for a tool online, but not know what such a thing would be called, I am unable to find anything. P.S. Google only helps those who know what they need help with. :(

  • Is "send us a page with code" a typical interview requirement?

    Recently I was asked to show "a page with code" for a job interview. Being mainly a back-end programmer, and that's the position I applied for, I first said to the person I was talking to exactly that: PHP is executed at the server and therefore not visible by just giving a "page". However, following their desire, I sent links to the pages I've worked on before. Obviously they couldn't see anything except for the HTML, CSS, JS... They said it was not enough, they could not see the PHP. Understanding that they probably just wanted to know my skills and/or interest I sent them my Stack Overflow profile. Among all my questions and answers, most of them with code, certainly the PHP is there. But it seems this is not what they wanted. Well, I don't have any code put together that I can simply publish for someone to see. And I would never do it for the code I have deployed, obviously. So my question is/are: What does "send us a page with code" mean? What should I send? Is this a typical interview requirement?

  • How to verify the code that could take a substantial time to compile? [on hold]

    As a follow up to my prev question: What is the best aproach for coding in a slow compilation environment To recap: I am stuck with a large software system with which a TDD ideology of "test often" does not work. And to make it even worse the features like pre-compiled headers/multi-threaded compilation/incremental linking, etc is not available to me - hence I think that the best way out would be to add the extensive logging into the system and to start "coding in large chunks", which I understand as code for a two-three hours first (as opposed to 15-20 mins in TDD) - thoroughly eyeball the code for a 15 minutes and only after all that do the compilation and run the tests. As I have been doing TDD for a quite a while, my code eyeballing / code verification skills got rusty (you don't really need this that much if you can quickly verify what you've done in 5 seconds by running a test or two) - so I am after a recommendations on how to learn these source code verification/error spotting skills again. I know I was able to do that easily some 5-10 years ago when I din't have much support from the compiler/unit testing tools I had until recently, thus there should be a way to get back to the basics.

  • Would there be any reason not to use github (or any open source hosting site) for my code?

    So I just created my first github repo and started to wonder if there would be any reason why somebody shouldn't post their code. I don't mean the obvious, such as code that is IP of somebody else or any other possible legal situation; I'm talking about a newbie posting their own, albeit terrible, code. I've heard several times on this site that one of the things that a some of the hiring managers do is check out the person on Github (or similar site), so what if the code is lacking? Would the position desired matter? (ex Junior Developer vs Senior)?

  • ACL tool for audit of Ubuntu production servers

    In my production environment, I have close to 10 Ubuntu 12.04 Servers and I want to get the list of users from them. I am looking for some kind of script or tool (non-gui) to get the same. Yes, I can get the list from /etc/passwd and /etc/groups files but it would be good to have a tool or script to do this due to the following reasons. I have right now 10 systems in Ubuntu and 30 systems in Windows 2003. I am recommending my organization and IT to move all the systems to Ubuntu except the one running MS SQL server We do not have good Ubuntu admins with us and they should not mess up with the system if I give some manual commands I also need to find out date of creation of user, group, password standards like strength, expiry etc Please help me as I want to automate the process and get the list on weekly basis from IT team.     With OpenWorld over October was time to get back to serious work for everyone, including the Fusion Applications Developer Relations team. Don't forget the OpenWorld content is still available, including presentation downloads, for a limited period of time so be sure to grab anything you found useful or take another scan for anything you might have missed. Of all the announcements, the continued evolution of the Oracle Cloud services for extending and integrating with Fusion Applications is increasing in popularity, and certainly the Cloud Marketplace is something we're becoming involved in. More details to follow. Fusion Concepts Last week Vik from our team started the new "Fusion Concepts" series of articles, providing those new to Fusion Applications an explanation of the architectural basics, with the aim to reduce the learning curve and lay the platform for more efficient and effective development. The series begun with an insightful first post on the different schemas that exist in the Fusion Applications database. Look out for upcoming posts on multi-lingual entities, profile options, look-ups and more. New Learning Resources Our YouTube channel continued to expand with more 'how to' videos on using page composer, extending the Simplified UI (aka FUSE), and integrating BI reports and analytics. Also the Oracle Learning Library is now well established as a central resource for knowledge, now with thousands of tutorials, videos, and documents. Of particular note are the great new extensibility-related videos added by the CRM Product Management team, including more on the ever-expanding capabilities of Application Composer. To see some examples of these search using keyword 'customization' or the product 'Sales Cloud'. Finally on learning resources, as Oliver mentioned the Oracle Press book on Fusion Application Customization and Extensibility is now available for pre-order on Amazon (due out 1st Jan). Out And About October also saw us attend the annual Apps Conference held by the UK Oracle User Group in London. Interestingly there was an Applications Transformation stream of sessions and content that included Fusion Applications with all the latest in the Oracle Applications evolution, as always focused around the three tenets of social, mobile, and cloud. Read more in Richard's post-event write up. Other teams around Oracle have also been busy. Angelo from the Platform Technical Services group has done quite a bit of work using web services with Fusion SaaS and has published many interesting findings on his blog. It's definitely recommended reading if you are working on any related integration projects. The middleware-for-applications group has built a new tool called "AppAdvantage" offering an online assessment of your use of Fusion Middleware technologies with Oracle Applications. As the popularity of integrating cloud applications with on-premises systems continued to grow, leveraging existing middleware technologies (and licenses) to support the integration solution is likely to be of paramount importance. Similarly the "Build Enterprise Application Extensions with Ease" section of the related webpage has AppsUX director Killan Evers speaking about customization using the composer tools. Both are useful resources for those just getting started with a move to Fusion Applications. The Oracle A-Team, specialists in middleware technical architecture, always publish superb content via their 'chronicles' site, now with a substantial amount specifically related to Fusion Applications. Click on the Fusion Applications menu on the top right of their homepage to see more. Last month of particular note was an article on customizing the timeout pop-up message that shows to inactive users, providing design-time insight and easy-to-follow steps. Finally if you're looking at using Oracle Middleware and Cloud to tailor and extend your applications then you may also be interested in this new blog post on the roadmap for Oracle SOA and the latest on-demand Cloud Development webcast.

  • Good way to backup code projects

    I work as a developer, and I have many projects for most of them use GIT for versioning the code, I have some projects that are not code such as interfaces sketches, idea, etc.. currently I have a disorder with the backups before Dejadup used, but the downside comes when I want to restore my backups from Windows. Periodically change of operating system (Windows or Linux). my question is which is better, copy each folder (project) directly to my external disk or create a repository (git - bare init) for each project I need or should do?

  • Multiline code in Word 2007

    I am using word 2007 and am inserting code into the document. I have a style with a fixed-width font and light grey background and all, and I use Notepad++ for syntax highlighting. My problem is with a "line" of code that is too long to display, so is there a way to auto-insert an arrow symbol at the beginning of a such lines to indicate that it is the same line (kind of like hyphenating, except on long lines instead of long words) So for e.g. something like this: public static void foo(String abcdefg, Boolean 123, ?String xyz)

  • What is a good program for storing "chunks" of commonly used source code

    I've looked at CodeLocker (poorly styled and relatively unflexible, but free) and Source Code Library (Overzone software - very nicely styled, looks flexible, but very expensive - $80). Ideally, I'm looking for a relatively simple, inexpensive program (not an online website) that I can save text data (source code) with a title and keywords, maybe even a description. It would also have some type of search functionality.

  • Inline code from iPhone keyboard [closed]

    When I'm writing a post here or on any of the sister sites (especially SO), I want to use the backquote for inline code blocks. Now, as far as it looks, there doesn't seem to be a backquote (backtick) on the iPhone keyboard. Under the single quote key, I've found two curly/angled quotes, but those (’ and ‘) don't seem to do the trick... So, how do I create an inline code block from iPhone/Safari?

  • Is there a way to validate the presence of Javadoc and/or inline code comments?

    We are trying to put quality code processes in place for a large project I am working on. Right now a lot of developers are not putting in Javadoc or in-line code comments into their code. Ok right now. But it will severely hurt us in the very near future. We are using Maven 2.0.9 as our build tool, as well as Hudson for Continuous Integration. We are using Subversion as our source versioning tool/code repository, Rational Application Developer and Rational Softare Architect (essentially Eclipse) 7.5.1 as our IDE's, and then Subclipse as our Eclipse plug-in to connect to SVN. Is there a plug-in or a way to validate that a developer put in Javadoc and/or in-line code comments in order to allow a commit to SVN? This isn't intended to be a substitute for good code reviews, but merely a help to make sure that developers are reminded to add this documentation before committing. We are still intending on conducting code reviews that would also review documentation. Has anyone found any plug-ins for something like this? Any links? Any ideas?

  • SQL SERVER – 3 Challenges for DBA and Smart Solutions

    Developer’s life is never easy. DBA’s life is even crazier. DBA’s Life When a developer wakes up in the morning, most of the time have no idea what different challenges they are going to face that day. Of course, most of the developers know the project and roadmap, which they are working on. However, developers have no clue what coding challenges which they are going face for that day. DBA’s life is even crazier. When DBA wakes up in the morning – they often thank that they were not disturbed during the night due to server issues. The very next thing they wish is that they do not want to challenge which they can’t solve for that day. The problems DBA face every single day are mostly unpredictable and they just have to solve them as they come during the day. Though the life of DBA is not always bad. There are always ways and methods how one can overcome various challenges. Let us see three of the challenges and how a DBA can use various tools to overcome them. Challenge #1 Synchronize Data Across Server A Very common challenge DBA receive is that they have to synchronize the data across the servers. If you try to manually write that up, it may take forever to accomplish the task. It is nearly impossible to do the same with the help of the T-SQL. However, thankfully there are tools like dbForge Studio which can save a day and synchronize data across servers. Read my detailed blog post about the same over here: SQL SERVER – Synchronize Data Exclusively with T-SQL. Challenge #2 SQL Report Builder DBA’s are often asked to build reports on the go. It really annoys DBA’s, but hardly people care about it. No matter how busy a DBA is, they are just called upon to build reports on things on very short notice. I personally like to avoid any task which is given to me accidently and personally building report can be boring. I rather spend time with High Availability, disaster recovery, performance tuning rather than building report. I use SQL third party tool when I have to work with SQL Report. Others have extended reporting capabilities. The latter group of products includes the SQL report builder built-in todbForge Studio for SQL Server. Challenge #3 Work with the OTHER Database The manager does not understand that MySQL is different from SQL Server and SQL Server is different from Oracle. For them everything is same. In my career hundreds of times I have faced a situation that I am given a database to manage or do some task when their regular DBA is on vacation or leave. When I try to explain I do not understand the underlying the technology, I have been usually told that my manager has trust on me and I can do anything. Honestly, I can’t but I hardly dare to argue. I fall back on the third party tool to manage database when it is not in my comfort zone. For example, I was once given MySQL performance tuning task (at that time I did not know MySQL so well). To simplify search for a problem query let us use MySQL Profiler in dbForge Studio for MySQL. It provides such commands as a Query Profiling Mode and Generate Execution Plan.   • why licenced code is packed and then is reviewable using Disassembler at the same time ?

    Is it legal / ethical to copy code for any reason, or utilize it (like code review) from the .Net framework or any other .Net based API using Reflector or similar tools ? If it is, what advantages do Microsoft and other licence based softwares have for packing there code ? If it is not, Why can we use ILDasm and Reflector ? Another way of saying this is Why to pack it up if it is fine to review it ? probably I am missing some bits in the question, any one who feels, could ask this question in a better way, is most welcome to edit.
