• Join column with different collation issue

  Hello everyone, I am using SQL Server 2005. I have two tables, and they are using different collations. It is not allowed to concatenate columns from tables with different collations, for example the following SQL is not allowed, select table1column1 + table2column2 from ... My question is, why concatenation of two columns from different collations is not allowed from database engine design perspective? I do not know why collation will impact results, the result is just concatenating strings -- should be simple enough and not dependent on collation... thanks in advance, George

  So I've gotten a project and got the db team sold on source control for the db (weird right?) anyway, the db already exists, it is massive, and the application is very dependent on the data. The developers need up to three different flavors of the data to work against when writing SPROCs and so on. Obviously I could script out data inserts. But my question is what tools or strategies do you use to build a db from source control and populate it with multiple large sets of data?

  I am aware of speed detection via gps, however as a background app, I am concerned about high power drain. I am looking to detect speed, say over 5mph, but it does not have to be accurate, say like a speedometer. Is there a low power way to detect if the phone is in motion, say by triangulation, or tracking tower strength and new/recently lost towers? I have an app design that is dependent on running in the background upon launch and knowing if the phone is in a car or not. Thanks!

  Here is the model we are using to store the CC details how secure does this look? All our information is encrypted using public key encryption and the keypair is user dependent (its generated on the server and the private key is symmetric encrypted using the users password which is also Hashed on the database) So basically on first run the user sends in his password via a SSL connection and the password is used with the addition of salt to generate an MD5 hash, also the password is used to encrypt the private key and the private key is stored on the server. When the user wants to make a payment, he sends his password. The password decrypts the private key, and the private key decrypts the CC details and the CC details are charged.

  My concern is performance, is there a reason to to send the client XML instead of valid HTML? Like most things, I am sure it is application dependent. My specific situation is where there is substantial content being inserted into the web page that has been pulled from a database. What are the advantages of either approach? Is the size of the content even a concern? Or, in the case of using XML, will the time for the Javascript to process the XML into HTML counterbalance the extra time that would have been required to send HTML to start with? Thanks, Jeff

  There are so many lightboxes to choose from, I'm looking for a very lightweight one to use in an embedded javascript widget that would be used on a number of different web sites. This would work in a similar way to the GetSatisfaction/UserVoice feedback tab. Here are the requirements for the lightbox: Very small javascript download (animation not needed) Self contained, not dependent on any libraries such as jquery, etc. Works in major browsers Lightbox displays HTML content from a given URL Close button (like GetSatisfaction or UserVoice) Dims background Avoids javascript namespace conflicts (or can easily be made to avoid them) CSS styling of lightbox does not interfere with site styling Have you used an existing lightbox scripts for this same purpose with similar requirements? • Android NDK Question

  The NDK does not contain very many shared libraries for you to access. As a result, I must build many sources myself and link them into my shared library via static/shared libraries. I want to compile libpng as a Static Library. Trouble is, I have absolutely no idea how, nor does google instruct you how to do so in their NDK. I'm no expert on the NDK even after reading everything I can find, so I would really appreciate someone who actually knows how this is done. I do have the Android.mk file for libpng, as google's Android OS source contains it. Infact, I got the entire directory on the android OS source for libpng and it's dependent libraries. It was somewhat of a shortcut instead of making one myself. I don't know how to make a particular directory which contains this file, though. Thanks for reading!

  When I run maven install on my multi module maven project I always get the following output: [WARNING] File encoding has not been set, using platform encoding UTF-8, i.e. build is platform dependent! So, I googled around a bit, but all I can find is that I have to add <properties> <project.build.sourceEncoding>UTF-8</project.build.sourceEncoding> </properties> to my pom.xml. But it's already there (in the parent pom.xml). Configuring <encoding> for the maven-resources-plugin or the maven-compiler-plugin also doesn't fix it. So what's the problem?

  I want to load a bunch of view definitions into SQL Server 2005 & 2008. I am using IF/ELSE logic to dynamically building Create or Alter statements that I then EXEC. This works fine. However, unless I get the order of the statements correct, I get errors if a view is dependent on another view that would be created in a later statement. Is there a way to turn of the valiation of the SQL statements until after they have all been entered? It seems like the worst of both worlds. SQL Server does late binding and so it won't propogate changes to tables and views, but you can't create a view without all the pieces being in place.

I thought I may ask your for your ideas. assume I have very small set of numbers (integers), 4 or 8 elements, that need to be sorted, fast. what would be the best approach/algorithm? my approach was to use the max/min functions.   Is there a method to automatically find the best compiler options (on a given machine), which result in the fastest possible executable? Naturally, I use g++ -O3, but there are additional flags that may make the code run faster, e.g. -ffast-math and others, some of which are hardware-dependent. Does anyone know some code I can put in my configure.ac file (GNU autotools), so that the flags will be added to the Makefile automatically by the ./configure command? In addition to automatically determining the best flags, I would be interested in some useful compiler flags that are good to use as a default for most optimized executables.

• Howto format a date as localized Short MonthDay string

  I would like to format a DateTime to a string containing the month name abbreviated and the date for use in axislabels in a graph. The default DateTime format strings do not contain abbreviated month. I guess there is no standard but I could take a substring of the first 3 characters of the month name and replace this into the MonthDay format.   My lack of javascript knowledge is getting me in trouble again. I think this should be a fairly easy problem to fix but I cant figure it out. Situation: I want to make three ajax calls in a click event. Each ajax call does a distinct operation and returns back data that is needed for a final callback. • 32 and 64 bit assemblies in one windows installer

  Hello, I have an application written in C# which depends on sqlite managed provider. The sqlite provider is platform dependent (there are two dlls for 32 and 64 bit applications with the same name). The application loads the desired one at runtime based on OS. The problem is that while creating an installer I cannot add 64 bit mode dll to the setup project as I am getting the following error: File '' targeting '' is not compatible with the project's target platform ''. I would use other installer but I have a custom action which must be invoked during the setup. So I wanted to know if there is an installer which will let me add 32 and 64 bit dll to it and execute custom action written in C#. One possible solution is to have two installers but I would like to avoid it if possible. Any suggestions?

• How to keep an old VB6 application running in Windows Vista and Windows 7?

  I have an old VB6 app which I'm still trying to support. A few users have reported weird crashes when running the app in Vista or Windows 7. The log files don't show anything after one of these crashes, but the customers report that the error message said "OLE something ...", if they saw anything at all. I've never been able to reproduce these crashes while running the program on my own Vista or Windows 7 boxes, so I have essentially no information on what the problem is. My suspicion is that it's a problem with their versions of one or more of the umpteen billion DLLs that a VB6 application is dependent on. The app also uses lame_enc.dll, which introduces a few more dependencies. I'm guessing this is a common problem with VB6 apps (although it's possible that I just sucked as a programmer 10 years ago). Is there some magical installer/updater out there that makes sure all the VB6 dependencies are what they need to be for a VB6 app to function properly?

I have a button inside customized table view cell and i have set different images for button's different states. Please look into the code below. [btnNow setImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"now_norm.png"] forState:UIControlStateNormal]; [btnNow setImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"now_focus.png"] forState:UIControlStateHighlighted]; Whenever i tap on the actual button this works great but if i tap on area outside of button but which is still inside that same cell then this button changes its background image from UIControlStateNormal to UIControlStateHighlighted. If i remove background image from UIControlStateHighlighted state then this issue doesn't exists but i need pressed state of the button. Please help me out. Thanks in advance! Vivek Dandage.

  I'm working on a cross-platform app for Windows and Mac OS X, and I have a problem with two standard C library functions: strtod() (string-to-double conversion) ? sprintf (when used for outputting double-precision floating point numbers) -- their GCC and MSVC versions return different results. I'm looking for a well-tested cross-platform open-source implementation of those functions, or just for a pair of functions that would correctly and consistently convert double to string and back. I've already tried the clib GCC implementation, but the code is too long and too dependent on other source files, so I expect the adaptation to be difficult. What implementations of string-to-double and double-to-string functions would you recommend?

  Hi All, I want to change the behavior of eclipse's parent-first classloader policy to child-first classloader policy. The scenario would be : Plugin A has class C in dependent external jar. When the classloader of the jar looks for "META-INF" folder - it should find the META-INF folder of the jar and not the one found by its parent classloader - that is the plugin A's META-INF folder. So I want to change the classloader policy to 'child-first' rather than 'parent-first' Is it possible to do this by changing the plugin A's Manifest or plugin.xml?
