  Hi.. I'm using Cygwin on Windows 7. When I plug in an USB stick, the drive automatically gets mounted to /cygdrive/x . This is good and really easy to use. My problem is that the drive letter changes sometimes, and when I've got remotes set up in git - I've got one called usb at /cygdrive/h/ - this sometimes doesn't work and I have to change the remote URL. That's just an example, there are other scenarios where I wouldn't want it to change. I like what the Mac does, and puts mounts a volume at /Volumes/STICK (STICK is the Volume name of my usb stick). Is there any way I can do this, or something similar under Cygwin. Thanks

• Generic Windows 98 USB Drive drivers?

  I've got an old Win98 machine that I'd like to pull some data off of. (Tens of gigs of data, actually.) The machine still runs fine, but due to the age, it doesn't have a cd burner, and the pre-NT networking won't connect to SMB shares without a fair amount of wrenching on the registry that I don't really want to do. What I really want to do is plug in an external USB hard drive and copy the files. But - Win98 didn't ship with generic USB drive drivers, and external drives don't ship with them these days. Can anyone point me at a reputable generic driver I can install?

• All items in my pen drive had been renamed automatically and cannot open it

  All the items (both files and folders) inside my pen drive had been renamed to some characters like :]h.¡?.A++ and when I try to open any folder Windows gives this message. The filename,directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect I was told that it is a problem of the pen drive, not a virus. They say if I format the pendrive then I will be able to use it again normally. But I'm not sure. And I need those files. Does anybody knows a solution?

• Corrupted files, hard drive test?

  Hi guys, I'm currently on a macbook with a 1TB external hard drive connected trough a USB hub wich is connected on my macbook. The problem is, my disk, wich is partitioned in 2 (one HFS+ and one NTFS) keeps getting corrupted, recently it was my HFS+ partition, I could not repair it using the Apple's Disk utility, but was able to backup my files. Is it synonym that my hard drive is failing? Is it because of my USB hub? I also keep all my iTunes library on my external HD (HFS+ partition), and did a lot of transfer lately, adding files, removing etc. the last time, my partition got corrupted after a lot of deleted items. If anybody has an idea of what to check first, what could cause the problem, I would appreciate it :) Thanks!

• Defrag/TRIM settings for hybrid hard drive?

  I recently acquired a momentus XT hybrid hard drive. This is a tradition spinning HDD with a small SSD portion for frequently used files. Normally, you are not supposed to defrag SSDs, as it does not help performance and can significantly reduce the life of the drive. But you do need to defrag an HDD to keep good performance. So where does that leave us for hybrid drives? Do I need to turn off defragging in Windows to preserve the SSD portion? Is the on-disk controller smart enough to handle defragging correctly? Is there some utility I need to set it up that I missed? Additionally, for SSDs you normally want to check for and enable TRIM support... but this makes no sense for a HDDs. Where does that leave us for hybrid drives? Should I try to enable TRIM or not?

• Most efficient hard drive configuration for multitasking system

  I hope I didn’t screw up the tile. Currently I’m using for my system 2x500g Raid0 system. I’m thinking about an upgrade but I got hold up by few questions. I need at least 100-120 gb for my system and apps and looking for a technological upgrade also. I've end up with 3 choices. Single 120 ssd (sata 6 drive) 2x60 ssd drives, but I've heard it's not possible. PCI ssd drive (~120gb). They all have very similar read/write values and prices but I was wondering if anyone could give some tips on which way to go. I run win7x64 and do a lot of multitasking(especially adobe stuff).

• Can I mix drive types in an HP server?

  I currently have the following setup: HP DL380 G4 Server 6 x 73GB, Ultra160, 10k, SCSI 80 Pin Drives Smart Array 6i Controller RAID 5 One of the drives is failing and needs to be replaced. I have on hand drives that are the same size and type, but are Ultra320, 15k instead. I have verified that these drives work in another system with the same type of drive controller. When I plug one of these in the system simply reports the drive as being offline and has nothing further to do with it. From what I have read these drives should be compatable. Should this work at all and if so, what might be preventing it?

• Dead USB flash drive

  So a friend has come to me with a problem. They have a dead USB thumb drive which no longer responds when plugged into a machine. I've tried it in a Mac and it doesn't even respond, at least on a Windows XP machine it sees that it is there but can't show it in explorer, just that whatever is plugged in has malfunctioned. There is obviously current because the activity light on the drive illuminates. I'm looking for suggestions, please. I have access to Mac or Windows hardware and am happy to experiment (and even to pay if the solution works!) It's a bit late to recommend regular backups, but in the lack of that, what's the next best forensic advice? Edit: I should stress that, if possible, we're trying to rescue the data, after all, thumb drives are basically disposable and hardly worth the bother if there's no emotional or functional reason for wanting to rescue it!

• Time Machine/iMac loses all trace of external hard drive after a few days

  Hey guys, First time posting, also a Mac newbie (recent windows convert) so I'm hoping I can get some help here :) I have a Hitachi Deskstar drive in an external casing that I got from ebuyer. (its one of those unknown fairly cheapish enclosures) connected via firewire. I hook it up and it works fine, but then at some point over the next week or so I'll realise that my last update was 3 days ago or so. At this point the Mac will not recognise the drive as existing and the only thing to do is switch off and on the external enclosure. It then works fine for a while. If I had to guess I'm assuming its powering down or something when the Mac goes into standby? Is there anyway to solve this?

• SQL SERVER – Error: Fix – Msg 208 – Invalid object name ‘dbo.backupset’ – Invalid object name ‘dbo.backupfile’

  Just a day before I got a very interesting email. Here is the email (modified a bit to make it relevant to this blog post). “Pinal, We are facing a very strange issue. One of our query  related to backup files and backup set has stopped working suddenly in SSMS. It works fine in application where we have and in the stored procedure but when we have it in our SSMS it gives following error. Msg 208, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Invalid object name ‘dbo.backupfile’. Here are our queries which we are trying to execute. SELECT name, database_name, backup_size, TYPE, compatibility_level, backup_set_id FROM dbo.backupset; SELECT logical_name, backup_size, file_type FROM dbo.backupfile; This query gives us details related to backupset and backup files when the backup was taken.” When I receive this kind of email, usually I have no answers directly. The claim that it works in stored procedure and in application but not in SSMS gives me no real data. I have requested him to very first check following two things: If he is connected to correct server? His answer was yes. If he has enough permissions? His answer was he was logged in as an admin. This means there was something more to it and I requested him to send me a screenshot of the his SSMS. He promptly sends that to me and as soon as I receive the screen shot I knew what was going on. Before I say anything take a look at the screenshot yourself and see if you can figure out why his queries are not working in SSMS. Just to make your life a bit easy, I have already given a hint in the image. The answer is very simple, the context of the database is master database. To execute above two queries the context of the database has to be msdb. Tables backupset and backupfile belong to the database msdb only. Here are two workaround or solution to above problem: 1) Change context to MSDB Above two queries when they will run as following they will not error out and will give the accurate desired result. USE msdb GO SELECT name, database_name, backup_size, TYPE, compatibility_level, backup_set_id FROM dbo.backupset; SELECT logical_name, backup_size, file_type FROM dbo.backupfile; 2) Prefix the query with msdb There are cases above script used in stored procedure or part of big query, it is not possible to change the context of the whole query to any specific database. Use three part naming convention and prefix them with msdb. SELECT name, database_name, backup_size, TYPE, compatibility_level, backup_set_id FROM msdb.dbo.backupset; SELECT logical_name, backup_size, file_type FROM msdb.dbo.backupfile; Very simple solution but sometime keeps people wondering for an answer. I tried implementing my pages' custom error messages using his method, yet there are some problems I can't quite explain. a) When I provoke a 404 Error by entering in invalid URL such as localhost:3001/NonexistantPage, it defaults to the ServerError() Action of my error controller even though it should go to NotFound(). The views themselves only contain some text, no markup or anything. As I said, it actually works in some way, just not the way I intended it to work. • SQL SERVER – Fix: Error: Compatibility Level Drop Down is Empty

  I currently have SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014 both installed on the same machine. My job requires me to travel a lot and I like to travel light. Hence, I have only one computer with all the software installed in it. I can install Virtual Machines but as I was able to install SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014 side by side, I just went ahead with that option. Now one day when I opened up my SQL Server 2014 and went to the properties of the my database, I realized that the dropdown box for Compatibility level is empty. I just can’t select anything there or see what is the current Compatibility level of the database. This was the first time for me so I was bit confused and I tried to search online. Upon searching online I realize that if I was not the first, there are very few questions on this subject on various forums as well as there is no convincing answer to this problem online. That means, I was pretty much first one to face this error. See the image of the situation I was facing. Now I decided to resolve this issue as soon as I can. I spent a few minutes here and there and realize my mistake. I had connected to SQL Server 2014 instance from SQL Server 2012 Management Studio. Hence, I was not able to see any compatibility related settings. Once I connected to SQL Server 2014 instance with SQL Server 2014 Management Studio – this issue was resolved.   Hello Community, I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and it seems to work flawlessly. But today I tried to check some CDs and I was surprised that Ubuntu doesn't automatically refresh the CD/DVDs inserted in my media drive. I had to eject manually the CD/DVD from Ubuntu and then Insert the new CD and only then Ubuntu reads the data in the newly inserted CD/DVD. How can I fix the CD/DVD refresh for the media drive so that Ubuntu 10.10 recognize it automatically?

  I'm new to Ubuntu (and actually all things Linux) as of this morning, so please excuse any stupid mistakes I may be making. I recently bought an external hard drive for my newly built PC (that is running windows 7 if it matters). I would like to install Ubuntu onto the external drive and boot from there. I downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 and made a bootable cd, unplugged my internal HDDs, plugged in the external drive, installed Ubuntu 11.10 on the external drive via the installer, and replugged in my internal HDDs. Then I set my bios boot order to: Boot from USB-HDD - Boot from Hard Disk - Boot from CD/DVD. Now when I restart I get the message "Starting Operating System..." (or something like that, I forget exactly what it says) that lingers on the screen for a moment and then windows starts. Any idea what the problem may be? ~Relevant info~ BIOS version: Award Software International, Inc. F2, 2/22/2011 Ubuntu Version: 11.10 External Hard Drive: Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB Portable Hard Drive (Black) ~Things I've already tried~ 1) Unplug internal HDDs so that only external drive was plugged in via usb. Same thing happened only obviously my BIOS could not detect any hard drives besides the external one. When booting received error "Could not detect operating system" 2) Formatted external hard drive and re installed. It didn't make a difference, however interestingly when I booted from cd the ubuntu installer said it detected ubuntu 11.10 on the external hard drive. 3) Within BIOS I've messed around with every boot order combo I could think of both in the "Hard Disk boot order" screen and the "Boot order" screen. I'm a little confused of why there are two screens for this. 4) Held F12 during startup which opens (what I think is) the one time boot screen and it gave me the options "Hard Drive", "cd/dvd", "USB-FDD", "USB-cdrom", "USB-HDD", and "USB-something else I can't remember what it was". I tried all of them, but the same thing as before happened each time. ~References~ I noticed several people on askubuntu have tried to do something similar if not the exact same. In fact, I even found a post that pretty much outlines step by step exactly what I did... only their's worked. /jealous. Linky: Install Ubuntu or Kubuntu on a External USB Drive I'm willing to try a different version of ubuntu - it's not like my heart is set on 11.10, but it's a pain to open my case and unplug my internal hard drives so I'd prefer not to do this unless someone is reasonably confident it'll work. • Read only file system error on ubuntu after partitioning

  I am not sure if I am the root cause of this problem but this is what I did: I wanted latest ubuntu and latest linux mint together on my thinkpad laptop. Windows 7 was already there. I already had mint. So I put in the USB with ubuntu image and started installing ubuntu. I chose to install side by side. It was taking a long time to finish defragmenting and partitioning. I decided to give up as I became a little impatient and I pressed the skip button. After the skipping, I realized that the partitioning was complete and went ahead with installing ubuntu. Now the linux mint OS starts reporting the file system as read only at least once every day and I have restart and tell the OS to fix errors in hard disk. After I press F key, the system fixes the issues, restarts and all is well again. Is there some way to fix the issue permanently. I think reinstalling will solve the issues, but I can not do it as I have a lot of data and I will have reinstall and configure a lot of softwares that I use daily. I checked the smart check in disk utility and the hard disk seems to be fine Also I checked both the partitions for errors with disk utility and the report says they are fine. Is there something I can do before I reinstall?

• I need help installing Ubuntu 11.10 to multi-drive system

  I have a machine with 3 hard drives; the primary, which is 750GB (drive 0), and 2 others, each of which is 640GB (drives 1 and 2). On the last screen before the actual installation begins, this is how my hard drive configuration looks: /dev/sda [DISK0, 750GB] /dev/sda1 ntfs 104MB [Win7 System Reserved] /dev/sda2 ntfs 499,997MB [Windows 7 Pro] free space 250,052MB [This space intended for Windows 8] /dev/sdb [DISK1, 640GB] /dev/sdb1 ntfs 400,085MB [Windows XP Pro] free space 240,049MB [This space intended for Ubuntu] /dev/sdc [DISK2, 640GB] [This drive intended for various backups] free space 160,033MB /dev/sdc5 ntfs 480,101MB [Acronis Secure Zone] As you can see, I have 3 drives, all SATA. I have Win7 on my first drive (0), WinXP on my second drive (1) and a secure zone for daily backups on my third drive (2). I want to put Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot on the drive that also has XP. I've already used 400GB for XP and I have 240GB remaining, for which, my intention was to create a 4GB swap file and use the rest for Ubuntu itself. This is what my second hard drive looked like, for my intended setup before installation: /dev/sdb /dev/sdb5 swap 4,095MB [Linux swap] /dev/sdb6 ext4 235,951MB [Ubuntu 11.10] Needless to say, this is only the second time I have attempted to install Linux. I managed to get 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon working on an old machine. I have two problems with this installation: Ubuntu asks for a location to install the boot loader (i.e., "Device for Boot Loader Installation"). I already have a boot loader; namely, Acronis OS Selector (from Acronis Disk Director 11). So I decided to put the Ubuntu boot loader in /dev/sdb6 (where I intend to install Ubuntu), to keep it from interfering with my Acronis OS Selector. Once I hit "Install now", I ended up with the following error: "No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu." What am I missing? Did I attempt to put the boot loader in the wrong place? I assume I did, because as I am writing this entry, I am looking at LinuxIdentity.com's Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal magazine, and I see a screenshot (Figure 7 on Page 13) that implies that the boot loader can be installed anywhere, including the first hard drive (in the MBR, which would obviously force me to reinstall the Acronis OS Selector) or even on a floppy. But why do I get an undefined root file system error? I thought /dev/sdb6 was the root file. Obviously I'm missing something in the installation procedure. Should I try installing it in Windows using the WUBI Installer? I assume that, if I attempt to install Ubuntu from WinXP (on the second drive), it will automatically install Ubuntu on the empty partition alongside XP. But will I have the option of creating a swap partition? And what if the WUBI Installer searches all of my drives and decides to install Ubuntu on my first drive's empty partition (which I have left empty for Win8 upon its release)?

• Cannot mount USB disks due to "not authorized" error

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 (.2?) installed. I don't plan to need GUI after setup so I modified the grub to start in console. However, whenever I want to start up GUI I need to type startx. Simple/basic stuff. However I seem to be hitting a snag: I am having trouble mounting/accessing USB flash drives in the GUI I started in the console. "Unable to mount location - not authorized". Seemed like it should be an easy fix, but can't figure out how I'm overlooking it. Can someone help me out?

• How can I add a second hard drive to a previously configured UEFI/ACHI Windows 8 machine?

  Recently purchased a new Windows 8 PC. It came with one hard drive. I want to a second hard drive to it. This second hard drive is my data hard drive from my previous computer. However, I have run into issues when the system accesses it. The drive is found in the BIOS. But is not seen by Explorer or Disk Management. I have added the drive to the next available SATA slot: SATA 2. The machine is a UEFI/ACHI based machine. In my reading I have found people documenting the following: 1) adding multiple partitioned hard drives (like mine is) to UEFI based machines is not possible 2) I have seen it suggested that you can only add blank hard drives to UEFI based machines. However, in doing so, I did not have success. I tried to add it as a hard drive with unallocated space and then as a hard drive with a single simple partition. Both attempts failed. My ultimate question: What is the proper procedure for adding a second hard drive to a UEFI/ACHI machine? I do not want to reinstall the OS and start from scratch as I have seen suggested elsewhere. There has to be a way to accomplish this without all that hassle. Thanks in advance for your help.

• Why can't Ubuntu find an ext3 filesystem on my hard-drive?

  This question is related to this question: Not enough components to start the RAID array? I'm trying to retrieve data from a "Western Digital MyBook World Edition (white light)" NAS device. This is basically an embedded Linux box with a 1TB HDD in it formatted in ext3. It stopped booting one day for no apparent reason. I have extracted the HDD from the NAS device and installed it in a desktop machine running Ubuntu 10.10 in the hope of accessing the files on the drive. • How can I Fix the CD/DVD refresh for the media drive so that Ubuntu 10.10 recognize it automatically?

  Hello Community, I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and it seems to work flawlessly. But today I tried to check some CDs and I was surprised that Ubuntu doesn't automatically refresh the CD/DVDs inserted in my media drive. I had to eject manually the CD/DVD from Ubuntu and then Insert the new CD and only then Ubuntu reads the data in the newly inserted CD/DVD. How can I fix the CD/DVD refresh for the media drive so that Ubuntu 10.10 recognize it automatically?
