• JavaFX 2.2.3 Documentation

  JavaFX 2.2.3 and JDK 7u9 were released today. In addition to the release documentation, the following new information is provided: Learn about some of the "behind the scenes" work for an application, such as threads, events, and binding with the new learning trail on the landing page. Learn how to use cell editors with the List View component. The new example in the UI Controls tutorial shows how to build a list of names by selecting them from a combo box. Other documents were updated to reflect minor bug fixes. You can download JavaFX 2.2.3 from OTN. For all tutorials and API documentation, see http://docs.oracle.com/javafx. • How to prevent WLAN connection from dropping permanently?

  I have a desktop with a Fritz USB WLAN N stick and tried Ubuntu 12.04. Installation went fine and WLAN is working. However, connection drops permanent. Reconnecting manually fixes it but after a few minutes it drops again. It's connected to a Vodafone 802 box with WLAN N fix set. It seems that it works when I switch off N mode. But I need to test. Can someone confirm this issue or is there another solution? I have another machine with 12.04 (HP 625 laptop) running where connection is stable.

• SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 is available!

  Microsoft has released Service Pack 1 for SQL Server 2012. Though so far it is only being made available for the x64 platform. You can read about the fixes in the following KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/20120401 The build # appears to be the same as RTM: 11.0.2100. Which may mean it's just a ploy to bring on board all those folks who still think it's necessary to wait for SP1. I haven't tried installing it yet, as I'm still on travel, but please let me know if you have any issues....(read more)

• Why does sound stop working after a while?

  I don't know how to reproduce this problem, because I don't regularly play music or sound. All I know is that, sometimes, I'll load a video (from youtube or from a local file) and there will be no sound. • Lubuntu 12.04 is a non-LTS release - does this mean that LXDE isn't, either?

  Lubuntu 12.04 is not a long-term-support release. That's mostly due to a lack of manpower. But I don't use Lubuntu on my machine, I use LXDE over stock Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. So my question is: In the next five years, will there be security updates and bug fixes for LXDE-packages such as Openbox, PCmanFM and LXsession? Or does the "LTS" in 12.04 LTS only include stock Unity packages? I guess this question is just as relevant for any other DE out there.

  Hello!  Updates to the Demantra Partial Schema Exporter Tool, Patch 13930627, are Available. This is an updated re-release of the generic Partial Schema Exporter Tool.  The generic patch is for 7.3.1.x and 12.2.x. TABLE_REORG was introduced in 7.3.1.3 12.2.0.  Therefore for 7.3.1.x the schema must be at 7.3.1.3 or above. This is build 3 of the patch. It contains fixes for the following bugs - BUG 17495971 - DEMANTRA 12.2 - CUMULATIVE HISTORY NOT CORRECT   It now only uses DATA_PUMP COMPRESSION only on Enterprise Edition for 11g and and up. - Bug 17452153 - 1OFF:16086475:TRYING TO FILTER DROP DOWN IN A METHOD CALL USING MORE THAN 1 ATTR   It now builds GL level filters with and without the GL id column where applicable. These bugs are also fixed in 7.3.1.6 and 12.2.3.

• 13.10 Cursor Disappearing?

  Upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 on my Ideapad Yoga yesterday, hoping it might have fixes for a couple of issues I've been having. While it seems to have made the touchscreen more usable, it has made the problem with my trackpad even worse :( In 13.04 and below, the cursor occasionally (maybe once or twice a day) would completely stop working and to get it working again I would run sudo modprobe -r psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse and it would be happy again, now every hour or so, my cursor just goes invisible, you can tell its still there as you can hover over things and they will respond. Again running sudo modprobe -r psmouse sudo modprobe psmouse works but it's getting a little annoying now its so frequent! Does anyone have any suggestions on things to try? :( Thanks in advance!

• Ubuntu 12.10 desktop/interface not showing on VirtualBox VM after login screen

  I'm having some trouble with getting my Ubuntu to work on a VirtualBox VM. I made a clean installation of Ubuntu 12.10 on a VM without any errors. I arrive at the login screen, as soon as I press enter it does it's little loading thingy and then screen goes black, then this is all I get: http://i.imgur.com/zULUI.jpg I can access the terminal and pretty much all the other features through it, but I would like to have the GUI properly working. I've been looking around the web and looking at various fixes to similar problems, but can't seem to get it to work. I'm thinking this problem might have to do with the graphics? I'm running Windows 8 Pro as host, if that helps, might be some compatibility issues with VirtualBox in W8... Thanks in advance!

• Spotlight on GlassFish 4.1: #6 Java API for WebSocket 1.1

  'Spotlight on GlassFish 4.1' is a series of posts that highlights specific enhancements of the upcoming GlassFish 4.1 release. It could be a new feature, a fix, a behavior change, a tip, etc. #6 Java API for WebSocket 1.1 JSR 356 (Java API for WebSocket) has recently passed the Maintenance Release ballot, this Maintenance Release fixes an important issue when Java SE 8 Lambdas are used (see here). GlassFish 4.1 will include an updated version of Tyrus (JSR 356 Reference Implementation) to bring the WebSocket API level to the latest version of the specification, i.e. WebSocket API for Java 1.1. It should be mentioned that the Tyrus version included in GlassFish 4.1 also brings additional features.   My Oracle Support 6.3 was released over the weekend (13-Oct-2012), and with that we released 30+ enhancements and 60+ bug fixes. Most important changes Search Suggestions are auto-correcting spelling errors, more suggestions for 'how to' type questions, enhanced usability to see the suggested additional terms. Improved Knowledge Base region on the My Oracle Support dashboard: recent searches from this region now retain the search attributions (e.g. pre-selected products or release). Search Tip: if the Knowledge Base region doesn't show up as the first region in the right column on the My Oracle Support dashboard, consider personalizing your dashboard to put it first, so that you right there for searching.   E-Business Suite 11.5.10 Sustaining Support Exception & 12.1 Extended Support Now to Dec. 2018 [ID 1495337.1] As part of Oracle’s continued commitment to our customers, we will be providing an exception for the first 13 months of Sustaining Support on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (11i10), valid from December 1, 2013 – December 31, 2014. This exception support will be comprised of three components: (1) new fixes for Severity 1 production issues, (2) United States Form 1099 2013 year-end updates, and (3) payroll regulatory updates for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia for fiscal years ending in 2014.  In addition, the Extended Support period for E-Business Suite Release 12.1 has been extended through December, 2018. Customers with an active Oracle Premier Support for Software contract will automatically be entitled to Extended Support deliverables for E-Business Suite 12.1. Please refer to the Lifetime Support section of oracle.com for further information regarding Oracle's Lifetime Support Policy for Applications. This change will be reflected in the October update to the Software Technical Support Policies.

• XHTML fix solution republished

  As a post VS2010 SP1 installation activity, I am recompiling all my open source projects. The first is XHTMLFIX at http://xhtmlfix.codeplex.com/ This LGPL project has simple fixes to ASP.NET 2.0/4.0 to achieve XHTML compliance as measured by the W3C tests at http://validator.w3.org/ The XHTML project shows as untrue the commonly held belief that MVP or MVC are necessary for producing XHTML compliant web pages. Incidentally the other supposed advantage of MVP and MVC over web forms of easier testing is also very dubious as web forms can be tested by systems such as Selenium or WaTiN. I have used NUnitASP (alas sadly discontinued) with web forms and found it be more effective than unit testing MVP. Now if you prefer the MVP and / or MVC approach over Web forms then fine, that is your preferance. Now if you can find an example where ASP.NET 4.0 Web forms properly written do not produce XHTML compliant markup, I would be glad of your example and will look at ways of modifying the markup to be XHTML compliant.

• Getting graduates up to speed?

  This question got me thinking about how comapnies deal with newly-hired graduated. Do experienced programmers expect CS graduates to write clean code (by clean I mean code easily understandable by others — maybe that is too much to expect?) Or do significant portion of graduates at your place (if any) just end up testing and fixing small bugs on existing applications? And, even if they do bug fixes, do you end up spending double the amount of time just checking they did not end up breaking anything and creating new bugs? How do you deal with such scenarios when pair programming and code reviews are not available options (for reasons such as personal deadlines), and also what techniques did you find to get fresh graduate up to speed? Some suggestions would be great.

• Useful versioning scheme for a git project?

  I have a small github project, which I need to add an option to to output some version number on the commandline. The problem is I have no idea how to "compute" the version number. Is this some random process? Should I just start at 1.0 (probably creating a tag or something), and put a number after . for fixes? I know this question is a bit vague... I just had never to deal with this, and want to use some sane versioning scheme. EDIT Im also interested into how to update this version number automatically, maybe using something like a git hook.

  I need to manually install the drivers for my graphics card, which is an ATI 2600 xt. But I am using a 64-bit platform and to do so i need the ia32-libs package. i have scoured the net for fixes, workarounds etc. but have found none that work. the output i get after trying apt-get is: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package ia32-libs is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package 'ia32-libs' has no installation candidate I am running linux mint 12

• SSMS Tools Pack 1.9.4 is out! Now with SQL Server 2011 (Denali) CTP1 support.

  To end the year on a good note this release adds support for SQL Server 2011 (Denali) CTP1 and fixes a few bugs. Because of the new SSMS shell in SQL 2011 CTP1 the SSMS Tools Pack 1.9.4 doesn't have regions and debug sections functionality for now. The fixed bugs are: A bug that prevented to create insert statements for a database A bug that didn't script commas as decimal points correctly for non US settings. A bug with searching through grid results. A threading bug that sometimes happened when saving Window Content History. A bug with Window Connection Coloring throwing an error on startup if a server colors was undefined. A bug with changing shortcuts in SSMS for various features. • SQL Server 2012 Cumulative Update #1 is available!

  While I joked earlier this month that SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 was released on the same day as General Availability (hey, it's Microsoft's fault since they decided to GA on April 1), this time it isn't a joke. Today Microsoft has released Cumulative Update #1 for SQL Server 2012 . About half of the fixes affect the database engine.   I'm looking at making some SEO optimisation fixes, and at this point I'm sorting out the heading structure and keywords - H1's, H2's etc We have a site where there are a number of similar blocks, and one is always visible, and one is hidden depending on the screen size. This is our method of making a single site responsive. Firstly, how does this technique affect the SEO, and in general does the responsive side of a site matter at all to search engines? What I mean by this is if the site has different content depending on screen sizes, then which content would the search spider crawl?
