• Netbook performs hard shutdown without warning on low battery power

  My Asus EEE netbook performs a hard shutdown when it reaches low battery power, without giving any warning - i.e. the power just goes off, without any shutdown process. I can't find anything in the syslog, and no error messages are printed before it happens. I've had this problem on previous (K)Ubuntu versions, and hoped updating to Ubuntu Precise would help resolve the issue, but it hasn't. The option in the Power application for "when power is critically low" is currently blank - the only options are a (grayed-out) hibernate and "Power off". I have re-installed indicator-power to no effect. The time remaining reported by acpi is unstable, as is the time remaining reported by gnome-power-statistics. (For example, running acpi twice in succession, I got 2h16min, and then 3h21min remaining. These sorts of jumps in the remaining time are also in the gnome-power-statistics graphs.) It might be possible to write a script to give me advance warning (as per @RanRag's comment below), but I would prefer to isolate why I don't get a critical battery notification from the system before this happens, so that I can take action as appropriate (suspend/shutdown/plug in power) when I get a notification. • Personalized Pricing

  In past postings I've spent a fair amount of time talking about targeted promotions.  Using a complete view of the customer that includes purchase history, location history, and psychographics gleaned from social media, we can select the offer with the greatest chance of redemption.  This is done to influence shopping behavior, which might be introducing the consumer to a new product line, increasing their basket size, increasing frequency of purchases, etc. Safeway seems to be taking a slightly different approach with their personalized pricing.  In additional to offering electronic coupons and club card offers, they are also providing a personalized price for certain items based on purchase history.  So when Sally want to shop at Safeway, she first checks the "Just for U" website for three types of deals.  She starts by selecting manufacturer coupons to load into her loyalty card, then she checks the Club Card for offers like "buy one get one free." The third step is the interesting one.  Safeway will set a particular lower price for Sally good for 90 days on items she buys often.  Clearly this isn't enforcing a new behavior but rather instilling loyalty.  I would love to know exactly how they are determining the personalized price.  Of course bargain hunters can still stack the three offers so they can, for example, get their $4.99 Oatmeal for $0.72. I like this particular question and answer from their website's FAQ: My offers are not that great. Can I tell you what offers I need? That's a good idea. That functionality is not currently available, but we appreciate your input and are constantly improving our just for U program. Stay tuned for exciting enhancements! I suppose if Safeway is tracking all the purchases, they can easily determine whether the customer if profitable.  As long as the customer stays profitable, why not let them determine a few offers themselves?  Food for thought.

• Have you Been Missing the 'About This Record' Functionality on the Customer Form...?

  Do you have fond memories of the 'Help -> About This Record'  functionality that used to be available in the old Customer form - when it was a form, and not a java html screen?  Back in Release 11i, we had the ability to identify when the customer record had last been updated and by whom.  When some forms were replaced by Java HTML screens, you could identify some of this information via the 'About this Page' hyperlink at the bottom left hand corner of the HTML page.  You could enable this by enabling the FND: Diagnostics profile option, but many customers found this had an adverse effect on performance and additionally was not user-friendly.   Our customers tell us that this feature was widely used to identify owner/update information in many business processes, including auditing, customer entry/update, research and testing.  There have been various efforts to revert this feature by customising java pages, but this was not fully successful in some cases.  Oracle Support is happy to announce that this functionality has now been included in the Customer screens in Release 12.2 onwards.   You will be able to query the record history at customer level, at site level, at site address levels and for all tabs relating to the customer. • How to switch and list windows (possibly of the same application) in Unity?

  Is there a way to switch easily between specific windows belonging to the same given application? For example, open Firefox, maximise the window; then, open its History window (History menu - Show all history), maximise it too. Is there an easy way to switch between these two maximised Firefox windows, without necessarily minimising the current window (or other windows in front of the required window)? Similarly, if I open another application alongside, how can I quickly go to the Firefox window of my choice? I have tried Alt+Tab, but when coming back from another application, which of the Firefox windows I end up with seems indeterministic. Under Gnome, I would find the window I'm looking for in the bottom bar. Under OSX, I would right-click on the application's icon and choose the relevant window from the list. Under Windows 7, I would click on the application icon and choose from the smaller windows. Is there something similar that's not activated or not visible by default in Unity? Hovering my mouse until I've found somewhere worth hovering over hasn't been very successful so far. I would prefer a click-based solution, but solutions involving key short-cuts instead are welcome.

• Best practices for displaying large number of images as thumbnails in c#

  I got to a point where it's very difficult to get answers by debugging and tracing object, so i need some help. What I'm trying to do: A history form for my screen capture pet project. The history must list all images as thumbnails (ex: picasa). What I've done: I created a HistoryItem:UserControl. This history item has a few buttons, a check box, a label and a picture box. The buttons are for delete/edit/copy image. The check box is used for selecting one or more images and the label is for some info text. The picture box is getting the image from a public property that is a path and a method creates a proportional thumbnail to display it when the control has been loaded. This user control has two public events. One for deleting the image and one for bubbling the events for mouse enter and mouse leave trough all controls. For this I use EventBroadcastProvider. The bubbling is useful because wherever I move the mouse over the control, the buttons appear. The dispose method has been extended and I manually remove the events. All images are loaded by looping a xml file that contains the path of all images. For each image in this XML I create a new HitoryItem that is added (after a little coding to sort and limit the amount of images loaded) to a flow layout panel. The problem: When I lunch the history form, and the flow layout panel is populated with my HistoryItem custom control, my memory usage increases drastically.From 14Mb to around 100MB with 100 images loaded. By closing the history form and disposing whatever I could dispose and even trying to call GC.Collect() the memory increase remain. I search for any object that could not be disposed properly like an image or event but wherever I used them they are disposed. The problem seams to be from multiple sources. One is that the events for bubbling are not disposing properly, and the other is from the picture box itself. All of this i could see by commenting all the code to a limited version when only the custom control without any image processing and even events is loaded. Without the events the memory consumption is reduced by axiomatically 20%. So my real question is if this logic, flow layout panels and custom controls with picture boxes, is the best solution for displaying large amounts of images as thumbnails. Thank you!

• Bash completion doesn't work, or is ignoring what I've typed; but works for commands

  Bash completion seems to be ignoring what I've typed (it tries to complete, but acts as if there's nothing under the cursor). I know I saw it work on this machine earlier today, but I'm not sure what has changed. • MEB: Taking Incremental Backup using last successful backup

  Introduction In MySQL Enterprise Backup v3.7.0 (MEB 3.7.0) a new option '–incremental-base' was introduced. Using this option a user can take in incremental backup without specifying the '–start-lsn' option. Description of this option can be found here. Instead of '–start-lsn' the user can provide the location of the last full backup or incremental backup using the 'dir:' prefix. MEB would extract the end LSN of this backup from the mysql.backup_history table as well as the backup_variables.txt file (for verification) to use it as the start LSN of the incremental backup. Because of popular demand, in MEB 3.7.1 the option '-incremental-base' has been extended further. The idea is to allow the user to take an incremental backup as easily as possible using the '–incremental-base' option. With the new option MEB queries the backup_history table for the last successful backup and uses its end LSN as the start LSN for the new incremental backup. It should be noted that the last successful backup is used irrespective of the location of the backup. Details A new prefix 'history:' has been introduced for the –incremental-base option and currently the only permissible value is the string "last_backup". So using the new option an incremental backup can be taken with the following command: $ mysqlbackup --incremental --incremental-backup-dir=/media/mysqlbackup-repo/ --incremental-base=history:last_backup backup When MEB attempts to extract the end LSN of the last successful backup from the mysql.backup_history table, it also scans the corresponding backup destination for the old backup and tries to read the meta files at this backup destination. If a valid backup still exists at the backup destination and the meta files can be read, MEB compares the end LSN found in the mysql.backup_history table with the end LSN found in the backup meta files of the old backup. • jQuery "Autcomplete" plugin is messing up the order of my data

  I'm using Jorn Zaefferer's Autocomplete plugin on a couple of different pages. In both instances, the order of displayed strings is a little bit messed up. Example 1: array of strings: basically they are in alphabetical order except for General Knowledge which has been pushed to the top: General Knowledge,Art and Design,Business Studies,Citizenship,Design and Technology,English,Geography,History,ICT,Mathematics,MFL French,MFL German,MFL Spanish,Music,Physical Education,PSHE,Religious Education,Science,Something Else Displayed strings: General Knowledge,Geography,Art and Design,Business Studies,Citizenship,Design and Technology,English,History,ICT,Mathematics,MFL French,MFL German,MFL Spanish,Music,Physical Education,PSHE,Religious Education,Science,Something Else Note that Geography has been pushed to be the second item, after General Knowledge. The rest are all fine. Example 2: array of strings: as above but with Cross-curricular instead of General Knowledge. Cross-curricular,Art and Design,Business Studies,Citizenship,Design and Technology,English,Geography,History,ICT,Mathematics,MFL French,MFL German,MFL Spanish,Music,Physical Education,PSHE,Religious Education,Science,Something Else Displayed strings: Cross-curricular,Citizenship,Art and Design,Business Studies,Design and Technology,English,Geography,History,ICT,Mathematics,MFL French,MFL German,MFL Spanish,Music,Physical Education,PSHE,Religious Education,Science,Something Else Here, Citizenship has been pushed to the number 2 position. I've experimented a little, and it seems like there's a bug saying "put things that start with the same letter as the first item after the first item and leave the rest alone". Kind of mystifying. I've tried a bit of debugging by triggering alerts inside the autocomplete plugin code but everywhere i can see, it's using the correct order. it seems to be just when its rendered out that it goes wrong. • How to architect Rails site that can be edited while running?

  Hi, I am writing a Rails app that "scrapes/navigates" some other websites and webservices for content. I am using Mechanize and Savon to do the heavylifting. But given the dynamic nature of the web, I'd like to make my calls to these editable by the admin users of the site - rather than requiring me to release a new version of the site. The actual scraping thread happens async to the website, using the daemons gem. My requirements are: Thinking that the scraping/webservice calling code is quite simple, the easiest route is to make the whole class editable by the admins. Keep a history of the scraping code - so that we can fairly easily revert if we introduce a problem. Initially use the code from the file system, but as soon as thats been edited and stored somewhere, to use that code instead. I am thinking my options are: Store the code in the db (with a history table for the old versions) Store the code in a private git repo somewhere and access that for the history/latest versions. I am thinking the git route might be easiest, given its raison d'etre is to track file history... But perhaps there is a gem/plugin that does all this for me, out of the box? • Svn repository split problem

  I want to split a directory from a large Subversion repository to a repository of its own, and keep the history of the files in that directory. I tried the regular way of doing it first svnadmin dump /path/to/repo > largerepo.dump cat largerepo.dump | svndumpfilter include my/directory >mydir.dump but that does not work, since the directory has been moved and copied over the years and files have been moved into and out of it to other parts of the repository. The result is a lot of these: svndumpfilter: Invalid copy source path '/some/old/path' Next thing I tried is to include those /some/old/path as they appear and after a long, long list of files and directories included, the svndumpfilter completes, BUT importing the resulting dump isn't producing the same files as the current directory has. So, how do I properly split the directory from that repository while keeping the history? EDIT: I specifically want trunk/myproj to be the trunk in a new repository PLUS have the new repository include none of the other old stuff, ie. there should not be possibility for anyone to update to old revision before the split and get/see the files. The svndumpfilter solution I tried would achieve exactly that, sadly its not doable since the path/files have been moved around. The solution by ng isn't accetable since its basically a clone+removal of extras which keeps ALL the history, not just relevant myproj history. BUMP C'moon, there must be someone who definitely knows if this is doable or not, and how!

• codeigniter mulitple LIKE db query using associative array- but all from the same column name...?

  Hi, I'm trying to query my database using codeigniter's active record class. I have a number of blog posts stored in a table. The query is for a search function, which will pull out all the posts that have certain categories assigned to them. So the 'category' column of the table will have a list of all the categories for that post in no particular order, separated by commas, like so: Politics,History,Sociology.. etc. If a user selects, say, Politics and History, The titles of all the posts that have BOTH these categories should be returned. Right? So, the list of categories queried will be the array $cats. I thought this would work- foreach ($cats as $cat){ $this->db->like('categories',$cat); } By Producing this- $this-db-like('categories','Politics'); $this-db-like('categories','History'); (Which would produce- 'WHERE categories LIKE '%Politics%' AND categories LIKE '%History%') But it doesn't work, it seems to only produce the first statement. The problem I guess is that the column name is the same for each of the chained queries. There doesn't seem to be anything in the CI user guide about this (http://codeigniter.com/user_guide/database/active_record.html) as they seem to assume that each chained statement is going to be for a different column name. Does anyone know how I could do this? Thanks! edit- Of course it is not possible to use an associative array in one statement as it would have to contain duplicate keys- in this case every key would have to be 'categories'...

• How to get a debug flow of execution in C++

  Hi, I work on a global trading system which supports many users. Each user can book,amend,edit,delete trades. The system is regulated by a central deal capture service. The deal capture service informs all the user of any updates that occur. The problem comes when we have crashes, as the production environment is impossible to re-create on a test system, I have to rely on crash dumps and log files. However this doesn't tell me what the user has been doing. I'd like a system that would (at the time of crashing) dump out a history of what the user has been doing. Anything that I add has to go into the live environment so it can't impact performance too much. Ideas wise I was thinking of a MACRO at the top of each function which acted like a stack trace (only I could supply additional user information, like trade id's, user dialog choices, etc ..) The system would record stack traces (on a per thread basis) and keep a history in a cyclic buffer (varying in size, depending on how much history you wanted to capture). Then on crash, I could dump this history stack. I'd really like to hear if anyone has a better solution, or if anyone knows of an existing framework? Thanks Rich

  I'm running MOSS 2007 and have created a new site under an existing one using sitemanager.aspx. I've done this on two machines. on one of those everything works correctly, while on the other some of the menu items for pages in the site seem to be gone. Also on the faulty site I get "Access denied" when I click "Version history". The permissions on both sites should be the same. I attach a screenshot of how the menus differ from each other. The one to the right (the faulty one) is unfortunately not in English but the items appearing on it are "Open link in a new window", "Copy", "Edit page settings" and "Version history". And then another column that holds a JButton to open up another screen with the corresponding Appointment as parameter.

• Starting from scratch with firefox, but keeping some stuff

  Hello everyone, I run Firefox 3.6 on OS/X. My Profile, along with saved passwords, bookmarks and history has come along with me across 3 different computers, and has been upgrading since 2.0, has had hundreds of addons installed, updated and removed and has even seen some Minefield builds. Not completely surprising, my firefox seems sluggish. I'd like to start from scratch with a clean profile, but I can't do this without my history, bookmarks and saved passwords. How would I go about this?

• Why does my Windows 7 computer wake itself up from sleep mode?

  I have XPS9100 DELL desktop computer awakes out of the sleep mode without me prompting it. I have 64 bit OS Before I go to sleep I put that in sleep mode but in the morning I see its awake and I try every setting possible but could not help I have tried this command and here is what I got and I am not sure what to do. • Firefox Like address bar in Chrome

  Firefox's "awesome bar" searches history including the titles of pages incrementally. How can I get chrome to also search the titles in history ? For example, for this very page,in Firefox, I can search "Firefox Lik" and this page's address shows up in Firefox but not in Chrome Is there any Chrome extension that can do this ?

• Is there a way of using ctrl-r after typing part of command in bash?

  In bash the ctrl-r command is very useful, I type ctrl-r whatever and it searchs my history for commands containing the word whatever. But if I type whatever and realize that I would like search that word and hit ctrl-r nothing happens. Is there a way hitting a key and having it behaving as if I had typed ctrl-r whatever instead of whatever ctrl-r? I have the following in my .inputrc "\C-p": history-search-backward but this only works if the beginning of the line is the same.

• Javascript Back Button - Stop back from closing window

  How do I get the "back" button seen in my demo to NOT close the browser window? If this can't be prevented, then at least provide them with a confirmation box alerting them the window is trying to close and ask them if they want to continue. I'm using a javascript back button link and forward button link to control the user's history inside a modal/lightbox window. Here's a demo of what is happening... When you begin, the second page will have a link to the modal window, so click that, then click the "back" button in the window as it will take you BACK to the start page.
