  • How do I prevent missing network from slowing down boot-up?

    I have been having rather slow boot on Ubuntu 12.04. Lately, I tried to figure out the reason and it seems to be the network connection which does not get connected and requires multiple attempts.   • Graduated transition from Green - Yellow - Red

    I have am having algorithm mental block in designing a way to transition from Green to Red, as smoothly as possible with a, potentially, unknown length of time to transition. For testing purposes, i will be using 300 as my model timespan but the methodology algorithm design needs to be flexible enough to account for larger or even smaller timespans. Figured using RGB would probably be the best to transition with, but open to other color creation types, assuming its native to .Net (VB/C#). Currently i have: t = 300 x = t/2 z = 0 low = Green (0, 255, 0) mid = Yellow (255, 255, 0) high = Red (255, 0, 0) Lastly, sort of an optional piece, is to account for the possibility of the low, mid, and high color's to be flexible as well. I assume that there would need to be a check to make sure that someone isnt putting in low = (255,0,0), mid=(254,0,0), and high=(253,0,0). Outside of this anomaly, which i will handle myself based on the best approach to evaluate a color. Question: What would be the best approach to do the transition from low to mid and then from mid to high? What would be some potential pitfalls of implementing this type of design, if any?

  • How do I do TDD on embedded devices?

    I'm not new to programming and I've even worked with some low level C and ASM on AVR, but I really can't get my head around a larger-scale embedded C project. Being degenerated by the Ruby's philosophy of TDD/BDD, I'm unable to understand how people write and test code like this. I'm not saying it's a bad code, I just don't understand how this can work. I wanted to get more into some low level programming, but I really have no idea how to approach this, since it looks like a completely different mindset that I'm used to. I don't have trouble understanding pointer arithmetics, or how allocating memory works, but when I see how complex C/C++ code looks compared to Ruby, it just seems impossibly hard. Since I already ordered myself an Arduino board, I'd love to get more into some low level C and really understand how to do things properly, but it seems like none of the rules of high level languages apply. Is it even possible to do TDD on embedded devices or when developing drivers or things like custom bootloader, etc.?

  • Wrapping a C# service in a console app to debug it.

    I want to debug a service written in C# and the old fashioned way is just too long. I have to stop the service, start my application that uses the service in debug mode (Visual studio 2008), start the service, attach to the service process and then navigate in my Asp.Net application to trigger the service. I basically have the service running in the background, waiting for a task. The web application will trigger a task to be picked up by the service. What I would like to do is to have a console application that fires the service in an effort for me to debug. Is there any simple demo that anybody knows about? Thank you Jack

    OK, not entirely related to programming, so I'm sorry. But I'd like to know about this: So I've got a webapp. There's one column where a list of results are fetched from the database. When you click one, jQuery fetches the information associated with that result and puts it into the second column - all without a refresh and using Ajax. Is it possible for Google to still read it etc.? I understand it can follow links... but presumably not Javascript actions etc.? If this is the case, what do other Ajax-heavy websites do about search engine optimisation? Jack

    There seems to be an overabundance of buzzwords for software development styles and methodologies: Agile development, extreme programming, test-driven development, etc... well, is there any sort of buzzword for "performance-aware" development? By "performance awareness", I don't necessarily mean low-latency or low-level programming, although the former would logically fall under the blanket term I'm looking for. I mean development in which resources are recognised to be finite and so there is a general emphasis on low computational complexity, good resource management, etc. If I was to be snarky, I would say "good programming", but that doesn't seem to get the message across so well...

  • jQuery: detecting reaching bottom of scroll doesn't work, only detects the top! :(

    Hi folks! So basically my problem is a seemingly simple one. You can see it in action at http://furnace.howcode.com (please note that data is returned via Ajax, so if nothing happens give it a few moments!). What's MEANT to happen, is in the second column when you reach the bottom of scrolling, the next 5 results are returned. But what actually happens is it only returns the 5 results when you hit the TOP of the scroll area. Try it: scroll down, nothing happens. Scroll back up to the top, the results are returned. What's going wrong? Here's my code I'm using: $('#col2').scroll(function(){ if ($('#col2').scrollTop() == $('#col2').height() - $('#col2').height()){ loadMore(); } }); loadMore(); is the function that gets the data and appends it.     Hi all. I believe we're moving to Oracle Apex for future development. I've read about Oracle Apex on wikipedia and it's pro and con. It seem to me the con outweigh the pro but maybe I'm wrong. I get the sense that Oracle Apex is for DBA with little or no programing knowledge to setup a web app quickly sort like MS Access for none programmer. If you have Oracle Apex working experience, can you share your though? From wikipedia's entry, it doesn't seem like you need to know any programming language at all but just the PL/SQL? edit: Is Oracle Apex scalable? Can it handle traffic like Facebook's size? Thank.     I have noticed high CPU utilization in a number of applications (except mplayer) which read from the embedded webcam on my laptop. Bizarrely CPU utilization varies proportionately to the level of illumination present. I know that that high CPU usage has nothing to do with rendering the video, as I have written a simple app using the OpenCV library to simply grab frames from the webcam, and cpu usage is still high. I think that mplayer might be using my GPU (and the other apps aren't), but since its not an issue with rendering, I dont think this explains anything. Cheese Low light --- ~12% CPU Bright Light ---- ~63% CPU Camorama Low light --- ~7% CPU Bright Light ---- ~30% CPU Opencv C++ library, (display in a single highgui window) Low light --- ~13% CPU Bright Light ---- ~40% CPU (same test on windows 7, 4-9%) Mplayer No problem, 1-2% regardless of light levels Note: If all I want't to do is capture a feed from my webcam I would use mplayer and forget about it, but I'm developing an application which uses the OpenCV to capture a video feed among other things, performance is important.

    Hey folks Maybe this isn't really feasible. But basically, I've been developing a snippet-sharing website and I would like it to have a 'live demo area'. For example, you're browsing some snippets and click the Demo button. A new window pops up which executes the web code. I understand there are a gazillion security risks involved in doing this - XSS, tags, nasty malware/drive by downloads, pr0n, etc. etc. etc. The community would be able to flag submissions that are blatantly naughty but obviously some would go undetected (and, in many cases, someone would have to fall victim to discover whatever nasty thing was submitted). So I need to know: What should I do - security wise - to make sure that users can submit code, but that nothing malicious can be run - or executed offsite, etc? For your information my site is powered by PHP using CodeIgniter. Jack

    Hey folks, CodeIgniter is brilliant but I'm using it to develop a site where users need to be able to share their code for websites. Unfortunately, CodeIgniter has been doing the "right" thing by removing <script> tags from my user's inputs into the database, so when it's returned data looks like this: [removed] User's data [removed] However, I need my site to DISPLAY script tags but obviously not PARSE them. How can I get CodeIgniter or PHP to return <script> tags, but still sanitise them for the database and return them without them executing? Thanks!   • Application qos involving priority and bandwidth

    Our manager wants us to do applicaiton qos which is quite different from the well-known system qos. We have many services of three types, they have priorites, the manager wants to suspend low priority services requests when there are not enough bandwidth for high priority services. But if the high priority services requests decrease, the bandwidth for low priority services should increase and low priority service requests are allowed again. There should be an algorithm involving priority and bandwidth. I don't know how to design the algorithm, is there any example on the internet? Somebody can give suggestion? Thanks. UPDATE All these services are within a same process. We are setting the maximum bandwidth for the three types of services via ports of services via TC (TC is the linux qos tool whose name means traffic control).

One of the keys is named "#text" but when i try to access it using {{ artist.image.3."#text"}} I get an error which is File "/home/jack/Desktop/test/appengine/lib/django/django/template/__init__.py", line 558, in __init__ raise TemplateSyntaxError, "Could not parse the remainder: %s" % token[upto:] TemplateSyntaxError: Could not parse the remainder: "#text" So how can I use this in the template? I've tried putting quotes around it but to no avail. I'd like to not modify the dictionary if possible, but if its easy enough to do then I guess its okay. Thanks

  • AJAX response inside jqplot not working

    I'm trying to render data from an AJAX response as a bar chart with jqplot. To render this bar chart I use two variables: s1 which contains the numbers ex: s1 = [22,67,32,89] ticks which contains the name corresponding to a number inside s1 ex: ticks = ["Jack", "Mary", "Paul", "John"] So my AJAX returns two variables, data1 and data2. When I console.log(data1) I get 22,67,32,89 When I console.log(data2) I get "Jack", "Mary", "Paul", "John" I then add the square brackets and change variable: s1 = [data1] ticks = [data2] When I console.log(s1) I get ["22,67,32,89"] When I console.log(ticks) I get "Jack", "Mary", "Paul", "John" And the graph does not render, this is my code: s1 = [data]; ticks = [data]; plot4 = $.jqplot('chartdiv4', [s1], { animate: !$.jqplot.use_excanvas, series:[{color:'#5FAB78'}], seriesDefaults:{ renderer:$.jqplot.BarRenderer, pointLabels: { show: true } }, axes: { xaxis: { renderer: $.jqplot.CategoryAxisRenderer, ticks: ticks }, yaxis:{min:0, max:100, label:'%',labelRenderer: $.jqplot.CanvasAxisLabelRenderer} }, highlighter: { show: false } }); });
