• Cluster Nodes as RAID Drives

  I'm unable to sleep tonight so I thought I would push this post out VERY early. When you don't sleep your mind takes interesting turns, which can be a good thing. I was watching a briefing today by a couple of friends as they were talking about various ways to arrange a Windows Server Cluster for SQL Server. I often see an "active" node of a cluster with a "passive" node backing it up. That means one node is working and accepting transactions, and the other is not doing any work but simply "standing by" waiting for the first to fail over. The configuration in the demonstration I saw was a bit different. In this example, there were three nodes that were actively working, and a fourth standing by for all three. I've put configurations like this one into place before, but as I was looking at their architecture diagram, it looked familar - it looked like a RAID drive setup! And that's not a bad way to think about your cluster arrangements. The same concerns you might think about for a particular RAID configuration provides a good way to think about protecting your systems in general. So even if you're not staying awake all night thinking about SQL Server clusters, take this post as an opportunity for "lateral thinking" - a way of combining in your mind the concepts from one piece of knowledge to another. • Laptop battery fails to change unless power level very low, and then dicharges quickly

  I've had my laptop for about 5-6 weeks. Its a DELL Alienware M15x and I have never replaced the battery,such as http://www.pcbatteria.com/dell-alienware-m15x-series.html. The past 3 weeks or so the battery can only charge when the computer is off or in a low power state. If its on and plugged in it will still lose its charge unless its already at 100%. On a full charge without being plugged in it only holds its charge for about 1 hour on "power saver". This makes it extremely hard to use it as a portable device so i'm trying to find a way to troubleshoot the problem without having to buy a new battery or laptop. Unfortunately I need it for the next few months in some of my classes so its kind of urgent. Thanks for your help!

• Cannot control the fan on a Sony Vaio laptop

  I've got Sony Vaio laptop and my fan is on all the time, though the temperature on the video-adapter is always over 60°?. As I've googled, vaiofand does not support VPC-EA series. Is there anything I can do with that or I need another laptop? I'm using the following graphics card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series] though the problem is not with the graphics card. I've mentioned its temperature as the highest (64°C now btw). Seems like the notebook is always overheated and I cannot control the fan speed to make it cooler. And yes, I'm using the proprietary driver ATI/AMD FGLRX graphics driver. I'm using Kubuntu 11.04.

• Fan running constantly on a Dell D420 laptop

  I'm running latest Ubuntu 12.04 beta on a Dell D420 laptop. The fan is spinning almost constantly - even after turning the PC off, letting it cool down, and then turning it back on, the fan will turn on after some idle time. Not to mention any CPU work. The CPU temps are normal, in range of 50-55 idle, and up to 70 with some load. It wouldn't be an issue, but the same PC running Fedora, or Arch Linux, had a much more modest fan profile - the temps were managed while you seldom heard the fan. To counter the problem, I currently use i8k tools, set manual temperature thresholds which seemed to have worked, but the i8kmon has a tendency to cycle the fan between lower and higher state within aboutin a second intervals - which is extremely annoying. As far as I can tell I did not run any special software (beside laptop-mode-tools), or any additional kernel modules when running Arch Linux and I can't tell about Fedora.

  I am trying to use 32"LCD monitor with my ubuntu 10.10 installation. I am trying to use my laptop screen and external monitor at the same time but having two separate desktops. I also want to use my laptop with 1280x800 resolution and external one with 1920 x 1080 using VGA. However, ubuntu sees my external LCD as a CRT and provide 13....x... resolution at the best not above. My graphics card driver is Nvidia 270.... driver. Is ubuntu capable of using two monitors separately or should i give up? Thank you

• Laptop not syncing with Ubuntu One

  I have a desktop running Maverick, and a laptop running Lucid. Both are supposed to be linked to my Ubuntu One account. The desktop syncs fine, but when I started the laptop for the first time in a couple of months, it wouldn't sync any more. The Ubuntu One Preferences window either reports "Synchronisation complete" even though no recent files have been downloaded nor have any test files created in the relevant synced folder been uploaded, or it says "Synchronisation in progress", which does not appear to be happening as it stays like this for ages and the lights on my router suggest no traffic is going through. Have repeatedly tried disconnecting and reconnecting, and removing the device from the account then reattaching it, all to no avail.

• Settings for multiple monitors are not stored

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04. on a Lenovo Thinkpad T400. I connected an external monitor as a second display. The laptop stands under the external screen. The laptop has a native resolution of 1440x900 (16:10), the external monitor 1280x1024 (5:4). There are two graphic adapters: one internal Intel GMA 4500 MHD and an discrete ATI card. Currently, the integrated Intel is enabled. I use the Display application to arrange the position of the monitors so it look like this: The problem: Whenever I restart my computer the configuration gets lost. First, the displays are mirrored instead of extended. I have to press Fn + F7 two times to switch to extended mode. Second, the Display settings still look like this: I know this worked once when I was running Ubuntu 10.10. I cannot tell since when it does not work. Do you know how I can permanently store the settings?

• Recovery from URL structure change?

  in July this year, we have changed the URL structure of the website from: Post: domain.com/blog/post/986/dance/heart-beats-dance-video-by-chinatsu/ Category: domain.com/blog/index/cosplay/ to Post: domain.com/dance/heart-beats-dance-video-by-chinatsu-986/ Category: domain.com/cosplay/ Everything was (supposedly) properly redirected with 301 redirects and it first seemed that the traffic returned after a couple of days, but it has now been close to 2 months and things keep going worse although Google is slowly indexing the changes. What is worrying me even more is that the Pages crawled per day from Webmaster Tools started drastically dropping a few days ago and has just reached a new low in months (from over 2000 to 700). Should I be worried or will things sort out eventually?

• Screen is very dim on an Acer Aspire 6920Z

  I've been trying to figure this out for a week now, my laptops screen is on and working but you cannot see whats on the screen without shining a flashlight at it. I'm using a spare monitor by the VGA port right now to be able to use this laptop, which is kinda a pain. Been reading around a bit about this problem and it seems to be a common-ish problem it seems. I've tried to change the brightness which doesn't help whats so ever. It just happen one day after I turned off the laptop for the night. The screen flashes on for a bit at start up, then goes completely dim. Anyone with this problem and find a fix? You can search up this computers spec by the name/model in the title if you need hardware info. I never had this problem with the old Ubuntu 10.04.

• Backlit keyboard on Toshiba Satellite P755-S5184 doesn't work in Ubuntu 12.04

  I have the keyboard backlight turned on in bios to timer setting (1 second). When laptop boots the backlight works, but once ubuntu begins to load the backlights turn off. There is a function key combo that is supposed to turn it on (Fn +Z), hitting that brings up a notification balloon showing the backlit keyboard icon but it is grayed out. I tried using KeyTouch to try and get the backlight working but my laptop model isn't on the list. I'm new to Ubuntu, and have been searching the web and can't seem to find any answers that will work for my particular situation. Any information would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!

• Connecting/Removing a Second Monitor with Multiple Workspaces

  I am running 12.04 on a laptop. I use workspaces extensively to manage different projects. When I take my laptop home, I plug in an additional monitor. The problem I am having is that whenever I plug in the additional monitor, all of my windows, regardless of what workspace they were in before I connected the additional monitor, move to workspace 1. This forces me to go through all the windows and manually move the windows back to where I had them. I don't think adding a monitor to each workspace should cause windows to move around between workspaces. Any thoughts or ideas on how to fix this? Know of any workarounds? Thanks in advance!

  Periodically I back up the keys within my servers and databases, and when I do, I blog a reminder here. This should be part of your standard backup rotation – the keys should be backed up often enough to have at hand and again when they change. The first key you need to back up is the Service Master Key, which each Instance already has built-in. You do that with the BACKUP SERVICE MASTER KEY command, which you can read more about here. The second set of keys are the Database Master Keys, stored per database, if you’ve created one. You can back those up with the BACKUP MASTER KEY command, which you can read more about here. Finally, you can use the keys to create certificates and other keys – those should also be backed up. Read more about those here. Anyway, the important part here is the backup. • What is the typical setup for a laptop used for multi platform development?

  I am planning to build a new laptop for development for both Windows & Linux platforms. On Windows, my development would be primarily on .NET/C#/IIS/MSSQL Server. On Linux, preferably Ubuntu, my development would be on Ruby and Python. I am thinking of buying a laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed with 4GB RAM/Intel Core 2 Duo/320 GB HD & then thinking of running 2 VMs for both Windows and Linux development with the host OS as my work station. Of course, I would be running DBs and web servers on the respective platforms. Is this a typical setup? My only concern is running two VMs side by side. Not sure if this configuration would be optimal. Alternative would be to do my Windows development on the host Windows 7 OS. Any thoughts?

• Can't change brightness on Toshiba l755 laptop

  I have a Toshiba l755 laptop, and I installed 12.04 64bit on it. The default brightness of the laptop is set to maximum value, and I can't change it. If I go to Configuration ? Brightness, the brightness doesn't change and neither does pressing the function keys. I tried changing some parameters of grub file, setting GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor". When changing the brightness from configuration, the value of /sys/class/backlight/toshiba/brightess changes, but screen remains the same. If I use the key functions, it changes the "actual_brightness" files. I don't know what else can I do, any suggestions?

• Sound plays from laptop speakers only even when headphones are connected

  I'm using a Dell Vostro 1014 laptop with Ubuntu 11.10. From the time I had Ubuntu 9.04, sound comes from the laptop speakers only even when I plug in earphones or external speakers. Also, if an external microphone plugged in, it does not work. Dell even replaced my motherboard to check for hardware issues but the problem persists. So it is definitely not a hardware issue. The sound plays perfectly through the headphones in the pre-boot diagnostics. So I figure, this must be a problem with Ubuntu not recognizing my sound card. Please try to give a solution for this problem.

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04/ 32-bit using Wubi on my laptop running dual with windows 7 desktop and it works very very well. I am now also trying to install Ubuntu on another laptop already running a linux operating system only but not successful in doing so. Would like to install Windows 7 dual with Ubuntu. At the moment it is complaining about partitions of the existing linux when trying to install Windows 7 which I suppose is fair. • Hard Disk Spins Down as long as Battery is in Laptop

  Hi, I just figured out today that as long as the battery is in my laptop, it doesn't matter if it's fully charged while plugged in, Ubuntu always spins down my hard drive. I noticed this because there was a huge difference in speed when I removed the batteries. My settings for power management is basically: on AC power, don't spin down harddrive, dont suspend or anything on battery power, basically save as much power as possible I assumed that if I plug in my laptop, it'll use the On AC Power settings no matter what but apparently, this isn't so. Is there a way to "fix" this?

• Phone pictures not showing in UbuntuOne folder on computer

  I downloaded the Android app for my phone and set it up to move my pictures from the phone into UbuntuOne. When I go to the UbuntuOne web site the folder shows up and I can view the pictures after I download them. But when I open the UbuntuOne folder on my laptop, the folder with the pictures from my phone isn't listed. How can I get the picture folder to show up in the UbuntuOne folder on my laptop? I was hoping this would be an easy way to get photos from phone to computer.

• Radeon HD 6290 terrible performance on a certified laptop

  I bought Asus K53U laptop, which is Ubuntu certified with pre-installed 11.10. The graphic card is Radeon HD 6290 but 720p playback is terrible. Even page scrolling in Firefox is very laggy. Proprietary drivers are installed by default. How is this possible, why is the laptop Ubuntu certified if the performance is poor? Any solution to this? I just did apt-get autoremove, and after that, this message came out in terminal: Error inserting vesafb (/lib/modules/3.0.0-15-generic/kernel/drivers/video/vesafb.ko): No such device Could that be the problem?

• Gateway m-1625 laptop keeps shutting down

  I have a gateway m-1625 laptop. The specs are: 3gig DDR2 ram, amd turino*2 processor 2Ghz, 250gig HD, windows 7 ultimate. After installing unbuntu 11.10 and using it for about an hour my laptop starts shutting down most times before even reaching the log on screen. I have re installed it twice but the problem still persist. I had this same problem with ubuntu 11.04. I have been using ubuntu for the last 5 years and never had this problem before. Windows 7, vista and fedora runs fine, it just ubuntu that gives any sort of issue. What could be causing this problem? has something critical been changed since the 10.10 version? I really love ubuntu and i want to be able to run it again

  I am facing an issue with brightness control in my laptop which has Intel HD graphics. So when I searched for a fix I found that a common suggestion is to edit the GRUB file line, GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor" So could anyone tell me what the kernel boot option acpi_osi=Linux do?
