  I did upgrade virtualbox from 4.1 to 4.2 wheneverver I want to load my win xp vdi, it gives me the following error: "Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary." I ran the suggested step to reinstall the kernel module, and the log file files is as follow: Makefile:181: * Error: unable to find the sources of your current Linux kernel. • SD card won't appear after upgrade to 13.10

  My SD card won't mount when I put it into my lap top, everything was fine before the upgrade. The information about the SD card appears just fine when I type "sudo fdisk l " it just says that it doesn't have a valid partition table. • dist-upgrade runs and completes but current kernel stays the same

  I think that my system is staying at an older kernel version. It seems to update when I run dist-upgrade but the current kernel version doesn't change. • Desktop goes un-usable after upgrade to 12.04

  I have multiple Ubuntu systems connected to a KVM, one of which I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 10 to 12.04. After the upgrade, this system desktop does fine until it is allowed to go to idle (i.e., I've switched to another system on the KVM and it locks it's desktop). When I come back to it, the screen is garbled and paging across at a rate seemingly determined by the mouse. Although no pointer is visible, I can get the screen to stop paging (and just be garbled) by moving the mouse left and right. The paging will slow down and come to a stop, if I can align things carefully enough. This condition persists even when I try to go to a CLI-based login (e.g., CTRL+Alt+F1) and will continue until I reboot the machine. Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with the Unity desktop, so I don't know where to find things to troubleshoot. A restart of lightdm doesn't change anything, so I'm wondering if this might be more hardware based( although this machine hasn't given me any trouble previously in the same setup). The .xsession-errors file has some issues with compiz, nautilus and GConf listed, but I'm not sure those are actually germane to the issue. Thanks for any help, -=Tom

• How do I upgrade from ubuntu 9.10 to 12.10 on my Acer Aspire 3000

  I had my Acer Aspire 3000 as a dual boot XP/ubuntu 9.10 a couple years ago. I recently blew the dust of it and wanted to upgrade to 7/Ubuntu 12.10 so I began by formatting the Ubuntu side of the partition and apparently damaged the mbr as I could only get black screen with the error message: GRUB loading. error: no such partition grub rescue I then slaved the hdd to my win7 desktop and formatted the entire drive, both sides of the partition then reinstalled it in the Acer and tried to install win7. Upon starting the Acer I got the same error message: GRUB loading. error: no such partition grub rescue I then tried to reinstall Ubuntu 9.10 as I have an Ubuntu produced installation cd. Same result. Next day I received a new battery I had ordered for the Acer. I plugged it and the power supply in and hit the power button just to see if I at least could charge the battery but to my surprise Ubuntu 9.10 began to install, so I let it and it did. Now the hard drive shows 58 gb and 2.5gb partitions neither of which is formatted NTFS for/by windows. I am guessing that the GRUB/mbr was repaired somehow by the Ubuntu reinstallation. My question, should you choose to accept it; How can I get to my goal of dual boot win7/Ubuntu 12.10. I am a beginner and don't know much about linux or the terminology.   After I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04, there was low graphics and no Unity. Just the mouse and the wallpaper. So, I got into the terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T, launched Chrome and searched for a solution. As a result, I tried this: sudo sh amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.run It did not work. Then I tried this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:makson96/fglrx sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install fglrx-legacy It did not work too. I removed the repository, got back the the xorg version to 1.13, and tried this: sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglRx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* xorg-driver-fglrx sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core It did return the screen resolution back, but still no Unity. • Can't (re)Install VLC (removed by update{again})

  I use VLC a lot, And When 2.0 came out Ubuntu did not update to that version, the REPO had the older version even months later, So I added the daily repo: http://ppa.launchpad.net/videolan/stable-daily/ubuntu and that worked for a while, after a few months later I received a 'Distribution upgrade' and when I installed it, it removed VLC. when I tried to re-install it gave me a bunch of unmet dependency's, so I disabled the source, ran apt-get update, and tried to install the older VLC, that did not work either. • How do you cope with change in open source frameworks that you use for your projects?

  It may be a personal quirk of mine, but I like keeping code in living projects up to date - including the libraries/frameworks that they use. Part of it is that I believe a web app is more secure if it is fully patched and up to date. Part of it is just a touch of obsessive compulsiveness on my part. Over the past seven months, we have done a major rewrite of our software. We dropped the Xaraya framework, which was slow and essentially dead as a product, and converted to Cake PHP. (We chose Cake because it gave us the chance to do a very rapid rewrite of our software, and enough of a performance boost over Xaraya to make it worth our while.) We implemented unit testing with SimpleTest, and followed all the file and database naming conventions, etc. Cake is now being updated to 2.0. And, there doesn't seem to be a viable migration path for an upgrade. The naming conventions for files have radically changed, and they dropped SimpleTest in favor of PHPUnit. This is pretty much going to force us to stay on the 1.3 branch because, unless there is some sort of conversion tool, it's not going to be possible to update Cake and then gradually improve our legacy code to reap the benefits of the new Cake framework. So, as usual, we are going to end up with an old framework in our Subversion repository and just patch it ourselves as needed. And this is what gets me every time. So many open source products don't make it easy enough to keep projects based on them up to date. When the devs start playing with a new shiny toy, a few critical patches will be done to older branches, but most of their focus is going to be on the new code base. How do you deal with radical changes in the open source projects that you use? And, if you are developing an open source product, do you keep upgrade paths in mind when you develop new versions?

• How can I validate if a 13.10 update was complete?

  I attempted to upgrade Ubuntu 13.04 server to 13.10 tonight via the standard linux text console and it had some trouble. Machine boots and displays 13.10, but I am unsure exactly what or how much was successfully upgraded. Is there some command I can run which will validate that all system has all standard binaries upgraded to the 13.10 release? As for the issue .... everything seemed to be going along ok until the screen displayed some kind of menu option regarding local edits to samba config file. There was a prompt requesting root password or ctrl-d to continue, but it would not take any input. From another terminal screen I tried killing the process displaying this samba message, and then some screen/SCREEN processes. The hard drive activity picked up for a while and then all the processes on that pty were gone. As I said, reboot was OK, but I have no idea if everything was upgraded. The machine seems to be acting like normal, except that the upgrade killed my openpvn process which I'll need to reload. Thanks

• Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10: Filesystem check or mount failed

  I attempted to upgrade from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 today, and mid upgrade the system started flaking out, and eventually locked up entirely. I was forced to restart the computer, and am now unable to get the computer to boot up at all. When I boot currently, it takes me to the GRUB menu, and I can choose to boot normally, or boot in an older version. I have tried several things, which I list below, but no matter what, when I try to finish booting into Ubuntu, I receive the following error: Filesystem check or mount failed. A maintenance shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and continue booting after re-trying filesystems. Any further errors will be ignored root@ubuntu-computername:~# I have fun fsck -f and everything appears correct, no errors are reported. and it passes all 5 checks.   We are using TFS Continuous Development model Main Trunk - Various Development branches - Various Release branches All merging back to main trunk Now we need some major changes to our folder structure and solutions How do you handle folder restructure in above model of TFS usage? do i need to draw line and create new structure from latest Main trunk and lock all branches and do updates then creates branches with restructured new trunk. Or am i underestimating TFS, would be able to handle major folder structure updates and propagate over to branches. As long as i know if we move around folders in branch or trunk it don't like it.

• Upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 now no network access

  A few weeks ago I decided I should enter the Linux world and read that Ubuntu is the most widely used release. I installed version 11.10 and it worked perfectly. Just this past week I decided I would do the upgrade to 12.04. The upgrade process itself worked fine. However, when I logged in I no longer had a network connection. I am running an AMD-based PC with a D-LINK DFE-530TXS network card and as I said, it worked fine in 11.10. I have scoured the Internet and come across a thousand slightly varying solutions, but they are too convoluted for someone new to Linux. Not because I can't follow the steps, but because most of the tools/utilities that are referenced (e.g. to compile, install, etc.) are not available when I use the stated steps in the solutions. So....should I re-install 11.10 or is there hope in getting this version to use the NIC that I know works. I have the latest driver from d-link for my NIC but I have no idea how to 'install' it for Ubuntu 12.04 to use. I know you will require additional information, but I wasn't sure what you would need. Thanks in advance.

  hey guys i have a porject where i have to be able to view my webcam on my mobile phone, which happens to be a blackberry bold 9700 but can also get a hold of an i pod touch so either phone is ok to use. the problem that i have is that everytime i do a search for help on this i end up with a program which enevitably asks for money and this is not allowd in the project, ive been trying to stream using vlc player and viewing it on the opera mini for blackberry but no such luck so far, any help would be great thanks a lot

• Major computer speed problems

  I've been running Windows 7 on my laptop for about a year now, and have had no issues regarding speed. About a month ago, my computer had what I refer to now as an "episode" where it runs extremely slow, when I open Task Manager I see no significant processes running, nothing out of the ordinary, but my computer is at 100% CPU usage. Usually restarting fixed this problem, but it seems to have gotten worse to the point where restarting does not fix this problem, and it's interfering with my work. What should I do?

• Major permission repair needed on Mac Os

  I made the fatal error of copying and pasting a sudo command into my terminal without double checking it, here it is. sudo -R mysql / What this does (for those that don't know) is recursively change the owner every file from the root down to mysql!! obviously not what i was intending This has of course played havoc with my system, the first thing i did was the apple permission repair but that only works for files that it has an idea of though it has changed a lot of file ownerships back to root. It seems that many library files are still owned incorrectly, as a lot of problems don't work. What i propose doing as a temporary fix until i can reinstall mountain lion is to recursively set all ownerships that are mysql to Luke. I'm not sure what they should precisely but this is still better than nothing. Is this possible using a shell script? I realise that this won't fix the problem properly and i will have to reformat but i need the machine in a workable state just for this week.

• Unknown problem causing major computer failure, Booting problem with windows 7, mainly with 0x0000000A

  Where do I begin? OS=Windows 7 I think it all started when I ran an installation file. I suspect it may have been a virus (even though AVG scan didnt pick anything up). The installation failed, computer crashed then restarted. In the middle of the reboot, I get BSOD. Normal boot up doesnt work so I use safe mode. Method 1: Not a problem I thought cos I will do what I normally do and that was to recover from my image file. Unfortunately, my Acronis software cant recover in safe mode. Method 2: I created a bootable disc for the Acronis recovery software. Managed to boot to Acronis and started the recovery from image file. This fail with some error message (did not manage to record). Something to do with not be able to copy to $AVG folder. Method 3: At this stage, assumed it was still a virus causing the problem so decided to format that partition to remove everything and hopefully the virus too. Had a lot of problems trying to bypass the system to allow me to format but (i think- more on this later) I managed to do that. Image was recovered, thought problem was resolved. Tried to boot windows but new error: Boot Manager is missing. Read up on this and managed to copy the Boot Manager from my Laptop's Manufacturer's partition (partition contains factory setup image file). Windows loaded but new BSOD with 0x000000A problem. Method 4: Attempted to reinstall factory settings but this failed cos i suspect by formating the partition, I may have removed the recovery software. Tried to create a bootable dvd of factory setting but machine is so bad it continues to crash. Bootable dvd method failed. Method 5:Spent alot of time reading up on this error, even installed a software to help scan and fix the problem. Scan failed and software required money! Anyway, lots of BSOD with different error message like 0x00000001A and 0x0000000D1. Error message changes with some reboots. Method 6: Found a hotfix from the windows site to fix 0x0000000A problem, great I thought! In safe mode, I cant install the file cos of error:0x8007043c. Tried to then install the fix in normal mode but installation just hangs. Returned to safe mode and followed advice to bypass 0x8007043c by changing the BITS status (read here: http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windowsupdate/181931-error-number-0x8007043c-windows-update.html). However, my machine at this time is so flaky that it hangs everytime i right mouse click the computer icon. I am at my wits end. Ya help or ideas? Cheers

• VPS showing low disk space despite there is nothing major on it

  Hello experts, On my VPS server I was trying to see the used disk space and when I open My Computer it shows 17.9 GB free out of 39.8 GB it means that 21.9 GB space is used. However, when I select all files and folders from C: and try to see the total size, it just count approximately 11 GB. The difference is around 10 GB. Where is this 10 GB going if I have not stored anything else here? I asked above question from my VPS provider and he responded below Check hidden files/system files/etc. This is default windows OS and its utilization and not specific to setup. If you want specifics of usage, you can go ahead and get in touch with Microsoft support team and they'll provide you with exact specification of the same. I am sure that Windows OS must not be taking up 10 GB space for hidden files and folders. My VPS has Windows Server 2008 R2 installed. Can anyone help me in this on who is right?

• System Issues and Major Malfuctions after Failed hibernation Exit

  I have a HP G71-340US that went into hibernation mode for a while and when I tried coming out of it, I got an error message: You're computer cannot come out if hibernation . Status: 0xc000009a Info: A fatal error occurred processing the restoration data. File: \hiberfil.sys Any information that was not saved before the computer went into hybernation will be lost enter=continue So I hit continue and it ran soooo super slow it. It was seriously crawling. Finally I gave up and turned it off manually (IE press and hold the button). It's been a week or two since then and EVERY SINGLE TIME I have tried to to do ANYTHING it takes forever. When I say forever, I literally mean takes 5-7 minutes to load the internet, then the page itself, then to click a link, so on so forth. Eventually everything just goes not responding and I have to give up (4-6 HOURS later). I also cannot access my thumb/jump drives once I've managed to load windows. I was going to try runing malware bytes incase of a virus, but it's windows explorer developes errors and goes not responding on me. Currently I'm running scan disk or check disk and like every file is coming back unreadable. I let it run the last 2 hours straight in chkdesk and I'm only at 6 percent with around 500+ errors and still going. Yes, I've taken logs of the errors via cell phone camera and patience. A week or two prior to this happening I had to change our the hard drive due to blunt force trama next to the mouse. OH! Running on Windows 7: ) And I've tried loading the computer in safe mode and it makes absolutely no difference. Any and all help would be appreciated. I really don't know what to do from here and I'm kind of freaking out. I've googled different part of the error and things that I've done/seen and there are so many different answers/topics that I thought it best to just post the questions.

• Websites not working with Opera 11.00, major bugs

  Sites like ebay and even superuser stop working properly when I use opera 11.00. Menus stop working everywhere from ebay to godaddy. Hovering on a menu item doesn't expand it, no sub menu slides out. This makes a large number of very popular websites unusable. Am I right in assuming this is a javascript issue? I use opera for the turbo feature (I have tested opera with and without turbo so it's not turbo's fault) because I'm on mobile broadband until I get my phone line sorted out. Turbo helps me save money, as well as allowing me to surf at a sane speed. Is there a firefox or chrome equivalent to opera turbo that doesn't cost money? I'm using Opera 11.00, build 1156.

• Kernel Error during upgrade or update commands

  I am getting these errors during sudo apt-get update and upgrade... I tried all possible options no success. I recently upgraded to 13.04 and had problems with Broadcom WiFi. Fixed tat issues using the clean script... but looks like it did not install the Kernel properly..
