I would like to start coding on a test server then once everything is confirmed working, I want to send all the files over to the production server. How should I go about this? • Java Applet Deployment, ClassNotFoundException (primary class)

  This is driving me up the wall. I have checked and rechecked spelling and paths. I have tried just about every combination of paths, including relative, absolute, and full http paths. I continue to get the following error when trying to load a Java applet: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: AppletClient.class at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader.findClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2ClassLoader.loadCode(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager.createApplet(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager$AppletExecutionRunnable.run(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) Exception: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: AppletClient.class The HTML used to load the applet: <applet width="100" height="100" archive="applet/myapplet.jar, applet/applet_dependency.jar" code="AppletClient.class"> <param value="blahblah" name="username"> <param value="false" name="codebase_lookup"> </applet> The applet is in a relative directory, "applet", from the path of the current page. I have unzipped the jar file and can see AppletClient.class. Also, in the source of the project, it is spelled that way (casing and all). I have tried with/without the parameters. I have changed the names of the archive jars in the applet include tag just to see if I get a different error for bad file names (same error). I have manually done GETs on the jars to make sure the server is responding to the requests (it is). I have tried with and without the codebase tag, with all different varieties of paths (start getting bad "magic number" errors on those). I know that this error sometimes pops up when a dependency fails to load, so it can be misleading, but all dependencies are present, accounted for, and are fetchable via manual GETs. Between each and every attempt I always clear my cache in FireFox. These problems are reproduced in IE8 and Chrome as well. Per my Java Console from the browser, I am running Java Plug-in 1.6.0_20. This is from the same machine that I develop the applet on, which runs fine via Eclipse. Finally, I kicked on Fiddler2, and I don't see a single request for the jar files anywhere The host site is running from my Visual Studio debugger, so it's running on localhost. But I see the requests for all the other resources on Fiddler. Just... no Jars. ANYWHERE. I clear the log, cleared my browser cache, and did a ctrl-R refresh. And still, not a single Jar request on the Fiddler log. I even did a delayed write (with JS) of the applet tag after the page loaded, once all the Fiddler activity slowed down. The element gets written to the document (and I can see the 100x100 Java error window), but not a single request shows up on Fiddler. Any suggestions, before I go crawl into the corner and cry myself to sleep? • What are some RCP Deployment Options?

  We have an RCP application and we are looking for a better way to do installation/updates. Currently to install, they just unzip a zip file. The zip file also contains scripts in it that are not java code. We were running into some bugs when updating if they don't first delete the old folder that was previous unzipped. The issue with deleting the folder is that the user loses the plugin preferences that were set. The installation would also need to register a COM server. The update would have to update the plugins and also replace the current script folder. What are some of the best options that could be used for installing and updating rcp apps? Thanks!

• Using 'git pull' vs 'git checkout -f' for website deployment

  I've found two common approaches to automatically deploying website updates using a bare remote repo. The first requires that the repo is cloned into the document root of the webserver and in the post-update hook a git pull is used. cd /srv/www/siteA/ || exit unset GIT_DIR git pull hub master The second approach adds a 'detached work tree' to the bare repository. The post-receive hook uses git checkout -f to replicate the repository's HEAD into the work directory which is the webservers document root i.e. GIT_WORK_TREE=/srv/www/siteA/ git checkout -f The first approach has the advantage that changes made in the websites working directory can be committed and pushed back to the bare repo (however files should not be updated on the live server). The second approach has the advantage that the git directory is not within the document root but this is easily solved using htaccess. Is one method objectively better than the other in terms of best practice? What other advantages and disadvantages am I missing?

  This is the error I get: Error 101 Could not load type 'control'. /Test.vbproj/x.ascx 1 1 WebDeployProject This is a left over file that was part of the project last week, but one of the developers deleted it from the project. I have to manually delete the file in order to get the WDP to build. Is there a way to tell the WDP to ignore the files that are not part of the project or to see that these files are not part of the project and delete them?

• Recommendations to handle development and deployment of php web apps using shared project code

  I am wondering what the best way (for a lone developer) is to develop a project that depends on code of other projects deploy the resulting project to the server I am planning to put my code in svn, and have shared code as a separate project. There are problems with svn:externals which I cannot fully estimate. I've read subversion:externals considered to be an anti-pattern, and How do you organize your version control repository, but there is one special thing with php-projects (and other interpreted source code): there is no final executable resulting from your libraries. External dependencies are thus always on raw source code. Ideally I really want to be able to develop simultaneously on one project and the projects it dependends on. Possible way: Check out a projects' dependency in a sub folder as a working copy of the trunk. Problems I foresee: When you want to deploy a project, you might want to freeze its dependencies, right? The dependency code should not end up as a duplicate in the projects repository, I think. *(update1: I additionally assume svn:ignore will pose problems if I cannot fall back on symlinks, see my comment) I am still looking for suggestions that do not require the use junction points. They are a sort of unsupported hack in winxp, which may break some programs* This leads me to the last part of the question (as one has influence on the other): how do you deploy apps whith such dependencies? I've looked into BuildOut for Python, but it seems to be tightly related to the python ecosystem (resolving and fetching python modules from the web etc). I am very eager to learn about your best practices.

  Hi, We have setup continuos integration in our development environment using SVN, CC.Net, MSBuild and Nunit. Now, we want to automate the process of moving (copying) builds from one stage to another like this: Whenever a new build succeeds in Dev, that should be copied automatically to the QA server (a folder on the QA server, to be exact) Whenever a QA build succeeds tests in QA, that QA build should be copied to the UAT server (a folder on the UAT server, to be exact). This should be implemented as a process (a CC task, for example) which we can start when QA succeeds. Whenever a UAT build succeeds tests in UAT, that should be copied to the PROD server (a folder on the PROD server, to be exact). The cab is created and i can copy it on the device and install the app. What im missing is that on device the application is not present in Programs folder. All i can do is browse to its location in /program files and run it manualy. Can some1 tell me how to: install CAB so it makes a shortcut in programs on device run the application automaticly after it has been installed thanx !

  Hi, I am working on VS 2008 and 3.5 framework. I had three windows services. I placed all three in a single solution, created installer individually for each of them. Then created a setup project. When I build it says build failed . But I checked on the errorlist, (i enabled the diagnostics in options menu), but there was no error at all. I went ahead and installed. There were no issues, But there was no service showed up in the services.msc. I installed each service individually , using installutil command, it showed up. But my requirement is to bundle these services and deploy to the client. The client should install it. Where am I going wrong. Any inputs will be highly appreciated. Regards cmrhema

• Visual studio deployment project error when writing to registry

  Hello I have a setup for an application that was recently converted to be a framework 4.0 project (don't know if it's relevant). The setup has to write to registry (Local Machine) and until now this has always worked perfectly, however now it fails to write to registry on a clean machine (running Windows 7, 64 bit). The setup does not fail, does not show a warning of any kind, however it does not write to the registry (I even set AlwaysCreate property to true on every key, just in case) which of course causes the application to terminate on startup. What could be the cause of this? I have never encountered such an error before. Edit: I have tried running the installer as administrator, didn't change anything.

• ClickOnce deployment with VS2008 - prerequisites not installing on Windows 7 (only)

  I have a VS2008 clickonce application with a custom prerequiste, which I install with the bootstrapper. When deployed online, the prerequisite is downloaded and installed fine. No problems. When deployed via CD to a Windows XP machine, also fine as above. No problems. However, when deployed via CD to a Windows 7 machine: the prerequisite is downloaded - good then the user is asked for permission to the run the file - good then the installation of the prerequiste is just SKIPPED - bad and the ClickOnce application installation begins without the prerequisite - bad Has anyone encountered this weird behaviour? I cannot find a solution anywhere.

  In theory I would like to produce 2 projects: 1) Asp.net (Sever A) 2) DAL running (Server B) I would like to utilise command objects to comunicate with the DAL. ASP.net instantiates a command class e.g. CmdGetAllUsers which impliments IMyCommand interface and sends it to the DAL (using ASMX or WCF). My question is: Would the class definition of CmdGetAllUsers need to exist on the DAL server? Or would having the interface definition be enough? My goal is to reduce the need to redeploy the DAL code, and have it as a fairly simple pass-through layer. Many thanks for your time.
