• I can't find Terminal Services Manager

  I am obviously stupid... because I'm logged into this Windows 2003 Server box as administrator, yet when I go under Administrative Tools, I can't find "Terminal Services Manager". Terminal Services are installed... I'm using them right now... and I know that's where the manager is supposed to be... yet it is not what am I missing? why isn't it showing? where else can I find it?

• Reporting Services 2008 & 2012 side by side

  I have installed Sql Server 2008 & 2012 side by side on the same machine, and that's includes the reporting service for each. Both are instances are named instances: MSSQLSERVER2008 and MSSQLSERVER2012. I didn't configure the 2008 one but configured 2012 first and this one is working fine. However later on when I wanted to configure the 2008 reporting service instance I was not able to do so; it simply cannot find it. Both services are displayed as running, nevertheless while being in Reporting Services Configuration Manager only the 2012 instance is displayed. I tried stopping the 2012 but still no luck, 2008 won't show up in the RS configuration manager. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance Iulian

• Remote Desktop Services create LAN and WAN user groups

  I'm setting up one server with the gateway, server host and web access roles on it. I know that isn't ideal but I don't expect to have many simulatenous users. I want users to access remote desktop web access and connect to the server host via the gateway as outlined here which avoids opening 3389 to the internet. Users will be connecting from the LAN and the WAN. What I'm looking to do is to allow some users LAN access but not WAN access and added plus would be if security settings (such as no clipboard) would be different when accessing via the WAN. Is this possible? It seems all users can logon to remote desktop web access by default. They can't run the remoteapps once logged in though without the proper permissions. Can I prevent them from even logging into remote web access? Since they renamed it from terminal services to remote desktop services it has made my Googling a bit harder. Thanks!

  Not quite sure if this question is better asked here or on superuser.com Hi All, My Win7 Ultimate no longer 'UAC prompts' me when I open the services applet (administrative tools). I can manipulate services without ever confirming the elevation. Yes, UAC is still enabled. Yes, I've rebooted to make sure this is not due to a former UAC elevation of explorer.exe or so. It looks like a big security hole. Does anyone have an idea about the reason for this behaviour? Or how to investigate it? TIA,

• What Sort of Server Setup Am I Likely to Need? - School A/V streaming

  My prior experience with servers has generally been limited to home file-sharing servers, low-traffic web-servers, and the like. This leaves me with the technical knowledge of how to set up a system, but little experience in terms of scaling said system. My current project, however, has me as the technical lead in setting up a school for online audio and video streaming. The difficulty I'm running into is that I don't quite have the experience to guess what they'll need, and they don't have the experience to tell me - so I've tried to ask as many pertinent questions about what they want to do with their server, and here's what I found out: About 1000 simultaneous users, and hoping to expand (possibly significantly) Both video and audio streaming, at obviously the highest quality possible Support for both live and playlist-based streaming. Probably only one channel, but as it's an educational opportunity, I imagine letting them have a few more wouldn't hurt. No word on whether they're locked into Windows or whether Linux is acceptable. Approximate budget - $7000. It may actually be about $2k less than this, because of a mishap with another technology firm (they ordered a $7000 DV tape deck for some reason, and now the company wants them to pay a 30% restocking fee). The tentative decisions I've already made: I'm planning on using Icecast 2 for my streaming server, fed by VLC Shoutcast encoding. Since the school already has a DMZ set up, I plan on placing the Icecast server in there, and feeding it through their intranet from a simple workstation computer in their studios. This system isn't in any way mission critical - it's an education tool (they're a media magnet school), so I figure redundancy is not worthwhile to them from a cost:benefit perspective. What I don't know is this: How powerful of a server will I need? What is likely to be my major throttle - bandwidth? How can I mitigate that? Will I need anything special for the encoding workstation other than professional video and audio capture cards and a copy of VLC? Are there any other considerations that I'm simply missing?   I am setting up two servers; one iis 7 and one sql 2008. I need to use reporting services. What is the best way to set up reporting services so that my iis box can serve the reports. I'm sure this is not an unusual configuration, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding an answer to this - probably because I am using the wrong terminology. Also does this configuration require two sql licenses (one for each server)? This sound like a lengthy explanation so links or even the correct terminology for this so I can find the answers myself would be much appreciated. Thanks

• Installing a personal security certificate for Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services user

  We use StoneEdge Order Manager, which runs under Microsoft Access, on several Windows computers as well as through Terminal Services on Windows Server 2008. Terminal Services users are unable to process credit cards using the First Data Global Gateway on the server. We have followed the necessary setup instructions provided under the user account, which involves adding a certificate in the Internet Options control panel. The Windows XP desktops require this to be done, or a generic 'unable to connect' message is shown when attempting to charge a card. On the server, this message is shown regardless of whether the certificate has been installed. Is there anything else that needs to be done that is specific to Windows Server that is not mentioned in the workstation instructions? Setup Instructions

• Stopping/Starting windows services

  I have four windows services which start up automatically when the machine starts. There after, I want to restart those services every 8 hours in a particular order. For eg. Stop s1,s2,s3,s4 and than restart them in some other order like s4,s3,s2,s1. The condition is that I should wait for each service to stop completely before I stop another one. I would want to write a .BAT or some script. Is it possible to define a CRON for 8 hours, this is not there in Advanced tasks ? Can I do it using windows scheduler ? • Putting altered social media logo icons on my website, can I get sued?

  I would say most websites with a somewhat thought-through graphical design use social media icons (i.e twitter, facebook, youtube, et.c) which are altered to fit the theme and design of the site. Now, my boss insist we only use the ones provided by say facebook or twitter themselfes (in fear of getting sued or lose credability), but sometimes it just doesnt look very good on the site. What is the common practice for these things? What do you risk by using an altered logo? What should I tell my boss? I'll provide a few examples, what'd happen if I put any of these on a site?

• iPhone Live Video Stream Media Player

  I'm hoping to make an app that streams live video that has a view placed on top with labels and a button on it. From my research and testing of the http video streaming feature (available since iPhone 3.0 OS), it seems that you create a webview that points to the index html that contains the converted video stream, and this displays as a quicktime video in the app. This means that I don't have control over the Media Player that is opened. Does anyone know how you can control this? I know that the Apple's MoviePlayer sample code shows you how to place views on top of a MediaPlayer video, but how can this be done with a http live stream? Thanks in advance.

• IIS, Web services, Time out error

  Hello, We’ve got problem with ASP.NET web application that uses web services of other system. I’ll describe our system architecture: we have web application and Windows services that uses the same web services. - Windows service works all the time and sends information to these web services once an hour. - Web application is designed for users to send the same information in manual behavior. The problem is when user sometimes tries to send information in manual behavior in the web application, .NET throws exception „The operation has timed out” (web?). At that time Windows service successfully sends all necessary information to these web services. IT stuff that supports these web services asserts that there was no any request from our web application at that time. Then we have restarted IIS (iisreset) and everything has started to work fine. This situation repeats all the time. There is no anti-virus or firewall on the server. My suggestion is that there is something wrong with IIS, patches, configuration or whatever? The only specific thing is that there are requests that can least 2 minutes (web service response wait time). We tried to reproduce this situation on our local test servers, but everything works fine. OS: Windows Server 2003 R2 .NET: 3.5

• Visual Studio RTM, Silverlight 4 RTM and WCF RIA Services download links

  Its been a long time since I blogged.  Primarily due to Tech Ed India, the ongoing Great Indian Developer Summit (GIDS 2010) and the related travels.  However, here is a quick post with a few updates.  Visual Studio 2010 RTMed in India during Tech Ed.  We had the privilege of having Soma our Senior VP launch VS 2010 RTM in Bangalore, India, during Tech Ed India 2010.   With that we also had Silverlight 4 getting RTMed during the same week. Earlier I had written posts around using the VS 2010 Beta, RC and the corresponding Silverlight, WCF RIA bits etc., and getting them all to work together.  Now that, both VS 2010 and Silverlight have RTMed, I wanted to post a quick update on the necessary downloads. Visual Studio 2010 RTM can be downloaded from MSDN Visual Studio site  If you are doing Silverlight 4 development with Visual studio, then you can download the Silverlight 4 Tools RC2 for Visual Studio  Then, if you are developing with WCF RIA Services, you can download the WCF RIA Services RC 2 for SL4 and VS 2010 And finally, if you want to use WCF RIA Services in ASP.NET you would require the Domain DataSource control.  Also, to use some of the additional Service Utility tools, you would require the WCF RIA Services Toolkit.  You can download the same from WCF RIA Services Toolkit April 2010 Once you have installed all the above, you should be able to see the following in your add-remove programs WCF RIA Services v1.0 for Visual Studio 2010 (Version 4.0.50401.0) WCF RIA Services Toolkit (Version 4.0.50401.0) Microsoft Silverlight (Version 4.0.50401.0) Microsoft Silverlight 4 SDK (Version 4.0.50401.0) Also, you would need the Expression Blend 4 for designing the apps for Silverlight 4.  You can download the release candidate from here Thats it.  You are all set for development with Visual Studio 2010 and Silverlight 4, WCF RIA Services. • C#: Streaming an Audio file from a Server to a Client

  I am currently writing an application that will allow a user to install some form of an application (maybe a Windows Service) that will open a port on it's PC and given a particular destination on the hard disk, will then be able to stream mp3 files. I will then have another application that will connect to the server (being the user's pc) and be able to browse the hosted data by connecting to that PC (remotely ofcourse) given the port, and stream mp3 files from the server to the application I have found some tutorials online but most of them are about File Servers in C# and they download allow you to download a whole file. What I want is to stream an mp3 file so that it starts playing when a certain number of bytes are download (ie, whilst it is being buffered) How do I go about in accomplishing such a task? What I need to know specifically is how to write this application (that I will turn into a Windows Service later on) that will listen on a specified port a stream files, so that I can then access the files by something of the sort: http://<serverip>:65000/acdc/wholelottarosie.mp3 and hopefully be able to stream that file in a WPF MediaPlayer. [Update] I was following this tutorial about building a file server and sending the file from the server to the client. Is what I have to do something of the sort? [Update] Currently reading this post: Play Audio from a Stream using C# and I think it looks very promising as to how I can play streamed files; but I still don't know how I can actually stream the files from the server.

• Streaming Video with Blackberry Simulator

  So, I wrote a quick little app for the iphone that takes in an http URL, and plays the .mp4 video located at that URL (it does more than that, of course, but that's the meat of it). Naturally, I wanted to have it on more than just a single mobile platform, so I decided to target Blackberry next. However, I'm running into a lot of problems with the Blackberry Environment. First of all, I learn that I can only download 256k files! I learn how to set that variable in my MDS simulator (and learn that this is NOT a production solution, because any end users will have to have their BES or MDS admin change the setting there). Then, I find a video less than 2 MB I can practice with. Going to the browser prompts me to save the video (rather than it playing in the browser like I expected). After saving the video, it refuses to play, saying it's the wrong format. So. I can't find a reference to IF Blackberry can stream with HTTP (i"ve heard it CAN use RTSP, though, and heard some rumors that it can't use HTTP, which would really suck). I also can't find a reference to what format blackberry uses (although I can find a million programs that will convert one file to the 'blackberry' format). Surely SOMEONE must have tried to stream video with the blackberry before. How did they go about doing so? Is it just a hopeless pipedream? Will I have to go with RTSP? Sorry for the lack of a concrete question...I'm just really lost, and I hate how so many tutorials or forum posts seem to assume I know the capabilities of the Blackberry... Edit: I finally found out that the .3gp (which I'd never heard of ) format is what Blackberry uses. Still have no idea how to stream videos off the web, though. • Seeking during mp3 streaming on Android

  I've got an android app that plays mp3s over HTTP. I give the Mediaplayer a URL using setDataSource, then call start in onPrepared, and all is well. Now, I'm trying to implement seeking. When i call seekTo, I don't see the Mediaplayer make a second request using the Range header to my webserver. From reading around, it seems like Android supports this. Do I need to do anything extra to get it to work? Thanks
