  • External monitor on old Dell 700m?

    Okay, linux noob. I installed 10.04 on an old Dell 700m in hopes of using it as a media center device. That seems to work great, except now it won't output to the external monitor. VGA cable works fine, TV recognizes other computers fine, it's the laptop that won't output. Turns out that the 700m, unlike every other computer out there, doesn't have a Fn hotkey to switch monitors. The only way to do it in Windows was to go through the Control Panel. In Ubuntu, though, the Monitor setup won't detect or recognize any monitors. The laptop display works fine, but I can't adjust or add anything. I did a little research and found suggestions for older Ubuntu builds involving the xorg.conf. I tried one out, in spite of my unfamiliarity, and it's screwed the whole display big time. I can fix that with a clean reinstall, that's no problem, but I'm cautious about editing xorg again. Any suggestions? Thank you!

  • How can I set my resolution to 1280x1024 on an Acer Aspire Revo 3700?

    I've just set up a new nettop computer (Acer Aspire Revo 3700: CPU:Atom D525, GPU:Nvidia ION2). I've just made a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 using the standard USB pendrive method. Almost everything works OK, but the graphics are not OK: the recommended Nvidia driver is activated but the monitor is not detected, so the resolution is wrong. How can I make Ubuntu detect my monitor? How can I get the proper resolution (1280x1024) in Ubuntu? I know that my monitor is not a CRT but an LCD: it's a BenQ, model T905, with 1280x1024 resolution at 60Hz, connected via a normal VGA cable. DVI or HDMI is not an option. When I go to SystemPrefsMonitors, I get: It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead? YES NO If I say NO then I get a window: or for YES I get this: In both cases I don't see that I can fix this problem. The main reason for getting this new computer was that I was sick of having graphics problems on the old one with a very ugly solution that didn't give me hardware support - but at least I got the resultion.   • External display resolution issue

    I'm new to Ubuntu. I've 'dabbled' in the past but Windows was annoying me too much so I finally made the change. One thing I use my laptop for is outputting the screen onto an external monitor. In Windows this usually works fine (but when there is an issue, it's a pain to resolve and has crashed my computer on many occasions). In Ubuntu it's a very simple case of "plug and play" because it displays the content immediately with no major problems. However, I can only alter the resolution of the external display to 4:3 formats, whereas the external monitor is 16:9, so the picture is stretched. In Windows there's loads of resolutions to choose from. If I disable the laptop's screen, it still doesn't allow me to display the correct resolution externally (on VGA). Further to that, if I close the laptop it keeps the external screen as it is, but when I reopen the laptop, the laptop screen doesn't turn back on until I restart. If it's a video I am watching, I can use VLC to alter the aspect ratio so the video looks fine, but it's quite an annoying work around. I used terminal to find my graphics controller, which is "Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a42] (rev 07)" (not great, I know... the laptop was a free gift with my mobile!) Any idea of how I can get the resolution on the external monitor to be correct?

  • External TV only allows 640x480 using VGA cable

    I have Ubuntu precise installed on a MacBook Pro. When connecting to an external television using a VGA style cable the highest resolution available seems to be 640x480. I'm using the proprietary NVIDEA Accelerated Graphics Driver (version current) and attempting to setup the TV using the nvidea-settings tool. I know all the equipment supports higher resolutions because of the following: Prior to rebuilding my machine with precise, the same TV, cabel & adapter gave higher resolutions The same machine & TV when used with a HDMI cable allows higher resolutions Windows laptops with the same cable & TV are able to achieve higher resolutions I'm not sure what to look for next, there are some similar FAQ questions but I'm not sufficiently familiar with the areas involved to know if these are my issue or are safe to try. Specifically: colord problem & my monitor resolution 640*480 with no other options! - is the closest, but as I'm having no problems with the main laptop monitor I'm not sure the described symptoms apply. I can't work out from the answer or Bumblebee site how to determine if nvidia optimus applies to my laptop. Why isn't my monitor's native resolution appearing as an option? - suggests configuring X by hand, but doesn't entirely match the symptoms I'm seeing

  • Django doesn't refresh my request object when reloading the current page.

    I have a Django web site which I want ot be viewable in different languages. Until this morning everything was working fine. Here is the deal. I go to my say About Us page and it is in English. Below it there is the change language button and when I press it everything "magically" translates to Bulgarian just the way I want it. On the other hand I have a JS menu from which the user is able to browse through the products. I click on 'T-Shirt' then a sub-menu opens bellow the previously pressed containing different categories - Men, Women, Children. The link guides me to a page where the exact clothes I have requested are listed. BUT... When I try to change the language THEN, nothing happens. I go to the Abouts Page, change the language from there, return to the clothes catalog and the language is changed... I will no paste some code. You don't have to understand it or even look at all of it. I've published it just in case because I really can't understand the origins of the bug. Now this is how I have narrowed the problem. I am debuging with "raise Exception(request)" every time I want to know what's inside my request object. When I place this in my aboutUs method, the language cookie value changes every time I press the language button. But NOT when I am in the displayClothes method. There the language stays the same. Also I tried putting the exception line in the beginning of the @base method. It turns out the situation there is exactly the same. When I am in my About Us page and click on the button, the language in my request object changes, but when I press the button while in the catalog page it remains unchanged. That is all I could find, and I have no idea as to how Django distinguishes my pages and in what way. P.S. The JavaScript I think works perfectly, I have tested it in multiple ways.     My screen flickers at 1280 x 1024, 75 hertz, 32 bit color, Dell Monitor e190s 19 inch square monitor. This problem only at the above mentioned resolution , it works fine with other resolutions. I just bought this Monitor 2 days back, do you think the Monitor is defective ? Why is this problem occurring , the system says this is the recommended resolution. Can it be due to my graphic Card ATI xpress 200, 256 MB (in built). Pentium 4 Windows 7 32 bit OS

  • Set Display Refresh Rate in OSX w/o External Utilities

    I have an iMac and an LG Flatron connected as a secondary monitor. The recommended resolution for the flatron is 1680x1050 @ 65.290 Hz (horiz), 59.954 Hz (vert). For some reason, OSX is choosing a slightly different set of scan rates and this is currently my best guess of why the monitor goes into power saving mode when connected to the iMac (but works fine on a PC). Now, I resolved this by installing switchResX and fudging the scan rates according to the specs in the manual. But how does one change these rates w/o 3rd party tools? Which config files need editing? Thanks

We often make demo to each other and need to show the demo on a big screen mornitor hang in the middle of the room :). I want to switch the display between each of the staffs using LAN wifi network.   • Screen resolution of monitor is wrong every time I turn the computer on?

    Hi, Im just wondering if there is a solution to my weird problem. Every time I turn on my PC the viewport isn't aligned correctly on the screen - there is always a black strip on the right hand side. This is not a big issue as it can be resolved by pressing the menu button on the screen and doing a factory reset. However it is irritating having to do it every time. The weird thing it never used to happen before with the tower Im using. Is potentially out of date drivers a problem? Thanks.

  • Why do moving lines become fuzzy on my monitor?

    I recently got a new notebook. With moving images there are some graphical issues, and I'd like to know what causes them. None of my earlier monitors exhibited similar issues. Moving high contrast lines become jagged, similar to interleaved videos. When moving a horizontal line vertically those artifacts are colored, when moving a vertical line horizontally they aren't colored. The effect isn't observable in static images. And when moving faster the zone in which it occurs becomes wider. The effect is very visible if I move a window around on the borders of the window and wherever high contrast lines appear. But it appears when watching videos too. The vertical line in that image moves to the right, the horizontal line upwards. The effect is most likely related to the fact that each real pixel consists of different sub-pixels for the different color channels. But how are these causing the observed effect? Is the change at which the different colors change to the destination brightness different? The optical impression is that every second pixel in a chess board like arrangement is adapting slower than it's neighbors. But that doesn't make much sense.

  • USB to DVI adapter to get around two monitor limit of my graphics card?

    My graphics card is an nVidia GTS 450 which will only run two monitors at a time, but I'd like to add a third one. Will I be able to do that using a USB to DVI adapter or would the limit still be there? Also I've been told the video quality is really bad with these adapters, so is the quality of the video output by these adapters okay for things like web browsing and working on office thing? And is it worth the $60 or would I be better off just buying a cheep second card?

  • Dual monitors: one monitor starts blinking and after a while turns black

    I am using dual monitors in Ubuntu 11 with classical interface (Not Unity). I am using two monitors. The system can detect and automatically configure the monitors correctly. The problem is that after some time, one monitor will start blinking and after a while it will turn black. Does any one know that it is the problem of my hardware or the problem of Ubuntu system? Thank you very much in advance for your help! Anand
