  • Windows 7: Dual Monitor Issue

    I have a Dell laptop with a docking station and two external monitors hooked up. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. Originally, the two monitors were the same - Dell 1908FP. I have replaced one of them with an HP LA2405. I have set the HP 24" (1920 x 1200 connected via DVI port) as montior 1 and extended to use the Dell 19" (12080 x 1024 connected via VGA port) as monitor 2. I have set my power plan so that when the laptop is plugged in, it will turn the monitors off after 10 minutes, but it will not put my laptop to sleep. However, now that I have the HP monitor, when I unlock my laptop and the monitors come back on, all my windows are resized and shifted to the top left corner of the HP monitor as if they had been resized for display on the smaller Dell monitor. A co-worker has the exact same laptop and monitor configuration but doesn't experience this issue, so I figure there's some configuration that's different but we can't find it. I haven't been able to find any mention of a similar problem doing an internet search, but I'm not really sure what terms to use in my search. Anybody have any suggestions as to what may be causing the issue? OS setting? Monitor setting? EDIT: My laptop is using the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel/drivers.

  • Secondary monitor bug: a problem in WPF or in the graphics driver?

    I have discovered a strange bug with my WPF application and I am trying to determine whether it is a problem with WPF or my graphics driver so that I can report it to the appropriate company. I have a Quadro FX 1700 with the latest drivers (197.54) on a Windows XP system, running a .NET 3.5 SP1 application. I have dual monitors, and when I maximize then minimize a child window of the main window on my primary monitor, the child window gets drawn on the secondary monitor as well. It appears in both places. I made a sample application (code is below) which induces this behavior. Start the application and ensure the main window is on your primary monitor. Double-click the main window. A green child window should appear. Click the green child window to maximize. Click the green child window to minimize. Can anyone else reproduce this problem? On my system the green child restores, but then it's drawn on both my primary and secondary monitors, rather than just the primary monitor.     I've noticed that the brightness of computer monitors drastically varies between computers. As such, this changes the look of web pages greatly. Is there a way to use JavaScript to automatically detect how bright (or dark) a users monitor is so that I can adjust my web page colors accordingly? UPDATE Please note that I do not want manual user involvement. I want this detection to be automatic so that users don't realize I dynamically change the color palette automatically based on the brightness/darkness of their monitor.

  • General monitoring for SQL Server Analysis Services using Performance Monitor

    A recent customer engagement required a setup of a monitoring solution for SSAS, due to the time restrictions placed upon this, native Windows Performance Monitor (Perfmon) and SQL Server Profiler Monitoring Tools was used as using a third party tool would have meant the customer providing an additional monitoring server that was not available.I wanted to outline the performance monitoring counters that was used to monitor the system on which SSAS was running. Due to the slow query performance that was occurring during certain scenarios, perfmon was used to establish if any pressure was being placed on the Disk, CPU or Memory subsystem when concurrent connections access the same query, and Profiler to pinpoint how the query was being managed within SSAS, profiler I will leave for another blogThis guide is not designed to provide a definitive list of what should be used when monitoring SSAS, different situations may require the addition or removal of counters as presented by the situation. However I hope that it serves as a good basis for starting your monitoring of SSAS. I would also like to acknowledge Chris Webb’s awesome chapters from “Expert Cube Development” that also helped shape my monitoring strategy:http://cwebbbi.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!7B84B0F2C239489A!6657.entrySimulating ConnectionsTo simulate the additional connections to the SSAS server whilst monitoring, I used ascmd to simulate multiple connections to the typical and worse performing queries that were identified by the customer. A similar sript can be downloaded from codeplex at http://www.codeplex.com/SQLSrvAnalysisSrvcs.     File name: ASCMD_StressTestingScripts.zip. Performance MonitorWithin performance monitor,  a counter log was created that contained the list of counters below. The important point to note when running the counter log is that the RUN AS property within the counter log properties should be changed to an account that has rights to the SSAS instance when monitoring MSAS counters. Failure to do so means that the counter log runs under the system account, no errors or warning are given while running the counter log, and it is not until you need to view the MSAS counters that they will not be displayed if run under the default account that has no right to SSAS. If your connection simulation takes hours, this could prove quite frustrating if not done beforehand JThe counters used……  Object Counter Instance Justification System Processor Queue legnth N/A Indicates how many threads are waiting for execution against the processor. If this counter is consistently higher than around 5 when processor utilization approaches 100%, then this is a good indication that there is more work (active threads) available (ready for execution) than the machine's processors are able to handle. System Context Switches/sec N/A Measures how frequently the processor has to switch from user- to kernel-mode to handle a request from a thread running in user mode. The heavier the workload running on your machine, the higher this counter will generally be, but over long term the value of this counter should remain fairly constant. If this counter suddenly starts increasing however, it may be an indicating of a malfunctioning device, especially if the Processor\Interrupts/sec\(_Total) counter on your machine shows a similar unexplained increase Process % Processor Time sqlservr Definately should be used if Processor\% Processor Time\(_Total) is maxing at 100% to assess the effect of the SQL Server process on the processor Process % Processor Time msmdsrv Definately should be used if Processor\% Processor Time\(_Total) is maxing at 100% to assess the effect of the SQL Server process on the processor Process Working Set sqlservr If the Memory\Available bytes counter is decreaing this counter can be run to indicate if the process is consuming larger and larger amounts of RAM. Process(instance)\Working Set measures the size of the working set for each process, which indicates the number of allocated pages the process can address without generating a page fault. Process Working Set msmdsrv If the Memory\Available bytes counter is decreaing this counter can be run to indicate if the process is consuming larger and larger amounts of RAM. Process(instance)\Working Set measures the size of the working set for each process, which indicates the number of allocated pages the process can address without generating a page fault. Processor % Processor Time _Total and individual cores measures the total utilization of your processor by all running processes. If multi-proc then be mindful only an average is provided Processor % Privileged Time _Total To see how the OS is handling basic IO requests. If kernel mode utilization is high, your machine is likely underpowered as it's too busy handling basic OS housekeeping functions to be able to effectively run other applications. Processor % User Time _Total To see how the applications is interacting from a processor perspective, a high percentage utilisation determine that the server is dealing with too many apps and may require increasing thje hardware or scaling out Processor Interrupts/sec _Total  The average rate, in incidents per second, at which the processor received and serviced hardware interrupts. Shoulr be consistant over time but a sudden unexplained increase could indicate a device malfunction which can be confirmed using the System\Context Switches/sec counter Memory Pages/sec N/A Indicates the rate at which pages are read from or written to disk to resolve hard page faults. This counter is a primary indicator of the kinds of faults that cause system-wide delays, this is the primary counter to watch for indication of possible insufficient RAM to meet your server's needs. A good idea here is to configure a perfmon alert that triggers when the number of pages per second exceeds 50 per paging disk on your system. May also want to see the configuration of the page file on the Server Memory Available Mbytes N/A is the amount of physical memory, in bytes, available to processes running on the computer. if this counter is greater than 10% of the actual RAM in your machine then you probably have more than enough RAM. monitor it regularly to see if any downward trend develops, and set an alert to trigger if it drops below 2% of the installed RAM. Physical Disk Disk Transfers/sec for each physical disk If it goes above 10 disk I/Os per second then you've got poor response time for your disk. Physical Disk Idle Time _total If Disk Transfers/sec is above  25 disk I/Os per second use this counter. which measures the percent time that your hard disk is idle during the measurement interval, and if you see this counter fall below 20% then you've likely got read/write requests queuing up for your disk which is unable to service these requests in a timely fashion. Physical Disk Disk queue legnth For the OLAP and SQL physical disk A value that is consistently less than 2 means that the disk system is handling the IO requests against the physical disk Network Interface Bytes Total/sec For the NIC Should be monitored over a period of time to see if there is anb increase/decrease in network utilisation Network Interface Current Bandwidth For the NIC is an estimate of the current bandwidth of the network interface in bits per second (BPS). MSAS 2005: Memory Memory Limit High KB N/A Shows (as a percentage) the high memory limit configured for SSAS in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS10.MSSQLSERVER\OLAP\Config\msmdsrv.ini MSAS 2005: Memory Memory Limit Low KB N/A Shows (as a percentage) the low memory limit configured for SSAS in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS10.MSSQLSERVER\OLAP\Config\msmdsrv.ini MSAS 2005: Memory Memory Usage KB N/A Displays the memory usage of the server process. MSAS 2005: Memory File Store KB N/A Displays the amount of memory that is reserved for the Cache.   • phpbb3 email settings for Zoho SMTP server

    I've spent a while guessing and googling, and haven't found an answer. In the past I setup my forums to send via my Gmail account, but spambots with fake emails have flooded my inbox, so I setup [email protected] with Zoho mail. Zoho works great, but I need to have my installation of phpbb3 send mass emails through the smtp.zoho.com mail server, and I can't figure out what settings I should use. The instructions on https://www.zoho.com/mail/help/pop-access.html are a little vague for anything that doesn't auto-detect the exact settings.

  • Scale plugin keeps forgetting hot corner settings on restart

    I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity, which I suppose uses Compiz as well. I have Compiz Settings Manager, and make the top left and bottom left corners of my screen activate the "Scale" (like Exposé) function to scale and show all windows. The problem is that when I restart the computer, the hot corners no longer do anything. I have to go back into compiz settings manager, delete the hot corner option, and then set it again. Something seems to be overriding or deleting the compiz hot corner setting on restart. Update: Sometimes, the setting loses its footing even while the computer is running. I haven't figured out yet what triggers it.

  • Xubuntu dual monitor broke display

    After I used Settings Display to enable my second monitor, my first display is not working anymore either. So I enabled both, then clicked save configuration since it was working and boom it crashed. Now when I start up, I can see the screen which I type my password but it goes black after that! When I boot into recovery mode it works fine but in Settings Display I don't see HDMI at all to disable it. Is there anyway to restore all display setting to default? (I can Ctrl+ALT+F1 and type commands but xrandr returns no results over there) EDIT I should clarify that system bios is set to laptop display

  • Modifing settings in Django

    I'm trying to get Django's manage.py to run with modified settings files. I have three settings files settings.py preview.py live.py settings.py contains my base settings but on live & preview sites I point the ['DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE'] to live or preview which in turn load the base file and any settings specific to that environment. This works fine, until I try to run migrations using manage.py I updated the manage.py file to import settings.preview but now when I try to run syncdb or migrate I get this error: django.core.exceptions.ImproperlyConfigured: You haven't set the DATABASE_ENGINE setting yet. My settings file has this in it though: DATABASE_ENGINE = 'mysql' How can I get this to work?

  • How do I clear xmodmap settings?

    Exactly what the title asks. How do I clear xmodmap settings? I have an IBM model M, and somehow xkeycaps got it into its head that my "End" key was not any key at all. xev reports keypresses when I use it, so I know the event is being generated by the keyboard. Also, xkeycaps thinks that my arrow keys are all wonky, and apparently the scrollbar is broken so it only scrolls down - so I can't scroll up to find an IBM keyboard that just maybe is close to my map so I can fix my keys. So I'm trying to reset my keyboard to the default settings, but the xmodmap manpage is woefully devoid of "reset all" or "clear all" or anything of that nature (that I was able to find). Help would be greatly appreciated!

  • How to config multiple monitor with optimus?

    I have an Acer Aspire 8951G running 12.04 Pangolin with bumblebee working beautifully. My problem is that when I connect either the VGA port or the HDMI to my projector there is no way I can see to properly set up the resolutions or colours. The default basic display driver sees the projector correctly, but messes up colours and resolutions (on hdmi) and resolutions on VGA. (Its a 1280 X 720 projector) Am I missing some sort of Xorg configuration? nvidia-xconfig does not seem to exist and running optirun nvidia-settings -c :8 opens the settings, but of course only for the one display. I just want a way to set a default config for my projector via VGA or preferably HDMI. Any help would be wonderful.

  • Display settings changes automatically with dual monitors in 12.04 and 12.10 AMD

    Dual monitors works fine, except that the settings suddenly change. This happens very often, sometimes several times in a few minutes. It is very irritating having to set the settings again each time. Suddenly mirroring is set to on, sometimes the monitor switch places (from left to right and so on), and most of the times the screen resolutions are also changed. I use Gnome Shell. I have tried unity with the same result. I use an open driver. I have earlier used fglrx, with some better results (still happens, but not so often), but can't install it sucsessfully after upgrading to ubuntu 12.10. I know there is a similar question about this issue, but it's not answered. I hope someone can help me.

  • Cannot set video resolution above 640x480 after installing Windows XP SP2

    I've installed Windows XP SP2 on a computer (there was not SP at all). Now the display settings are set back to 640x480 and 4 bits colors. And I can't change it, it's the only option in Settings tab of the Display dialog of Windows. The screen look awful now, how can I solve this problem? UPDATE: Seems to be a problem with the video driver (thanks @Karan and @Hennes).   • How to prevent thunderbird gmail/IMAP from marking deleted/archived emails as read

    I have thunderbird setup to use gmail IMAP. I followed the various guides that recommend setting Edit-Account Settings-Server Settings-When I delete a message-Remove it immediately. Unfortunately this didn't have quite the effect I wanted and after more digging I discovered here that: [Thunderbird] [Gmail] Mark Deleted = Archive Copy to [Gmail]/Trash = Delete Permanently Remove it immediately = Archive Unfortunately whenever I deleted (archived) a message it was also marked as read whether it had been or not. I didn't want this because I like to keep my inbox clean and archive anything that doesn't actually matter, such as funny emails, etc. and then go back and look through the archive later when I have time. What settings do I need to prevent messages from being marked read when I delete them? I'm using Thunderbird 17.0 on Ubuntu 12.04

  • Best way to provide software settings?

    I'm using C# .NET. In my software I'm providing settings dialog through which user can set the application settings which I want to save to a file. Requirements (typical): Every class I defined uses some part of these settings. So, these should be global to all classes. These should be loaded while software is started. When ever user changes settings and clicks 'save'/'apply'. Current settings should change. I am wondering what is the best way to do this? Also, what is the best way to save these settings to disk? I mean should I create a Settings class object and serializing it to 'settings.dat' or provide an structured file like XML/JSON

  • Musings on the launch of SQL Monitor

    For several years, I was responsible for the smooth running of a large number of enterprise database servers. We ran a network monitoring tool that was primitive by today’s standards but which performed the useful function of polling every system, including all the Servers in my charge. It ran a configurable script for each service that you needed to monitor that was merely required to return one of a number of integer values. These integer values represented the pain level of the service, from 10 (“hurtin’ real bad”) to 1 (“Things is great”). Not only could you program the visual appearance of each server on the network diagram according to the value of the integer, but you could even opt to run a sound file. Very soon, we had a large TFT Screen, high on the wall of the server room, with every server represented by an icon, and a speaker next to it that would give out a series of grunts, groans, snores, shrieks and funeral marches, depending on the problem. One glance at the display, and you could dive in with iSQL/QA/SSMS and check what was going on with your favourite diagnostic tools. If you saw a server icon burst into flames on the screen or droop like a jelly, you dropped your mug of coffee to do it.  It was real fun, but I remember it more for the huge difference it made to have that real-time visibility into how your servers are performing. The management soon stopped making jokes about the real reason we wanted the TFT screen. (It rendered DVDs beautifully they said; particularly flesh-tints). If you are instantly alerted when things start to go wrong, then there was a good chance you could fix it before being alerted to the problem by the users of the system.  There is a world of difference between this sort of tool, one that gives whoever is ‘on watch’ in the server room the first warning of a potential problem on one of any number of servers, and the breed of tool that attempts to provide some sort of prosthetic DBA Brain. I like to get the early warning, to get the right information to help to diagnose a problem: No auto-fix, but just the information. I prefer to leave the task of ascertaining the exact cause of a problem to my own routines, custom code, intuition and forensic instincts. A simulated aircraft cockpit doesn’t do anything for me, especially before I know where I should be flying.  Time has moved on, and that TFT screen is now, with SQL Monitor, an iPad or any other mobile or static device that can support a browser. Rather than trying to reproduce the conceptual topology of the servers, it lists them in their groups so as to give a display that scales with the increasing number of databases you monitor.  It gives the history of the major events and trends for the servers. It gives the icons and colours that you can spot out of the corner of your eye, but goes on to give you just enough information in drill-down to give you a much clearer idea of where to look with your DBA tools and routines. It doesn't swamp you with information.  Whereas a few server and database-level problems are pretty easily fixed, others depend on judgement and experience to sort out.  Although the idea of an application that automates the bulk of a DBA’s skills is attractive to many, I can’t see it happening soon. SQL Server’s complexity increases faster than the panaceas can be created. In the meantime, I believe that the best way of helping  DBAs  is to make the monitoring process as simple and effective as possible,  and provide the right sort of detail and ‘evidence’ to allow them to decide on the fix. In the end, it is still down to the skill of the DBA.

  • How do I clear xmodmap settings?

    Exactly what the title asks. How do I clear xmodmap settings? I have an IBM model M, and somehow xkeycaps got it into its head that my "End" key was not any key at all. xev reports keypresses when I use it, so I know the event is being generated by the keyboard. Also, xkeycaps thinks that my arrow keys are all wonky, and apparently the scrollbar is broken so it only scrolls down - so I can't scroll up to find an IBM keyboard that just maybe is close to my map so I can fix my keys. So I'm trying to reset my keyboard to the default settings, but the xmodmap manpage is woefully devoid of "reset all" or "clear all" or anything of that nature (that I was able to find). Help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Lost desktop settings in KDE

    After next unsuccessful attempt to install ATI fglrx drivers, when I also changed GRUB config a bit (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="radeon.modeset=0 and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"). When I restored everything to default (uninstalled fglrx, restored default values in GRUB config and xorg.conf) KDE logged me into completely new desktop, with (I suppose) default configuration. Is there a way to restore my previous desktop settings? What could be the cause? SOLVED: Something was messed out with display settings. Search for 'Display Configuration' and there deselect one display. Or is there a better option?
