• What is Best storage servers infrastructure ? DAS/NAS/SAN or installing GlusterFS/LUSTER/HDFS/RBDB

  I am trying to design an infrastucture for the project I am working on. It would be somehow a file-sharing/downloading project (like rapidshare) and I would need high storage sizes and good scability, and I would add new storage nodes after my project grows up. I have come up with 3 solutions for my project which are using Luster, GlusterFS, HDFS, RDBD. For start, i would have 2 servers, one server is for glusterfs client + webserver + db server+ a streaming server, and the other server is gluster storage node. (After sometime, i would be adding more node servers, and client servers (dont know how many new client new servers to add, will see later) So, i am thinking to work with glusterfs. But i really wonder that if i have to use high performance servers with high sotrage sizes or avarage/slow servers with high storage sizes? Or nas/das/san solutions are better for glusterfs storage nodes? I might buy a nas and install glusterfs onto it. I would be happy to listen to your recommendations for the server properties (for each clients and nodes) . I really dont know if I really need high amount of ram and good cpus to for the nodes. I am sure i need it for client servers. The files would be streamed as well, so the Automatic file replication is important, thus, my system should work like a cloud, when needed, according to high traffic, the storage nodes should copy the most demanded file to be streamed and would help me to get rid of scability problems and my visitors would able to stream/download those files. Also, i am open to your experiences/thoughts about any good solution. Luster, hdfs, rbdb are the other options and i would be happy to listen to your thoughts here. I would be very very happy to hear back from anyone commented of any words I have used here. Thanks

• How to handle recurring dates (dates only) in .NET?

  I am trying to figure out a good way to handle recurring events in .NET, specifically for an ASP.NET MVC application. The idea is that a user can create an event and specify that the event can occur repeatedly after a specific interval (e.g. "every two weeks", "once a month" and so on). What would be the best way to tackle this? My brainstorming right now is to have two tables: Job and RecurringJob. Job is the "master" record and has the description of the job as well a key to what customer it's for, while RecurringJob links back to Job and has additional info on what the occurrence frequency is (e.g. 1 for "once a month") as well as the timespan (e.g. "Weekly", "Monthly"). The issue is how to determine and set the next occurrence of the job since this will have to be something that's done regularly. I've seen two trains of thought with this: This logic should either be stored in a database column and periodically updated, or calculated on the fly in the code. Any thoughts or suggestions on tackling this? Edit: this is for a subscription based web app I'm creating to let service businesses schedule their common recurring jobs easily and track their customers. So a typical use might be to create a "Cut lawn" job for Mr Smith that occurs every month The exact date isn't important - it's the ability for the customer to see that Mr Smith gets his lawn cut every month and followup with him about it. Let me rephrase the above to better convey my idea. A sample use case for the application might be as follows: User pulls up the customer record for John Smith and clicks the Add Job link. The user fills out the form to create a job with a name of "Cut lawn", a start date of 11/15/2009, and selects a checkbox indicating that this job continually occurs. The user is presented with a secondary screen asking for the job frequency. The user indicates (haven't decided how at this point - let's assume select lists) that the job occurs once a month. User clicks save. Now, when the user views the record for John Smith, they can see that he has a job, "Cut lawn", that occurs every month starting from 11/15/2009. On the main dashboard when it's one week prior to the assumed start date, the user sees the job displayed with an indicator such as "12/15/2009 - Cut lawn (John Smith)". A week before the due date someone from the company calls him up to schedule and he says he's going to be out of town until 1/1/2010, so he wants his appointment rescheduled for that date. Our user can change the date for the job to be 1/1/2010, and now the recurrence will start one month from that date (e.g. next time will be 2/1/2010). The idea behind this is that the app is targeting businesses like lawn care, plumbers, carpet cleaners and the like where the exact date isn't as important (because it can and will change as people are busy), the key thing is to give the business an indicator that Mr. Smith's monthly service is coming up, and someone should give him a call to determine when exactly it can be scheduled for. In effect give these businesses a way to track repeat business and know when it's time to followup with a customer.

• Don&rsquo;t Kill the Password

  A week ago Mr. Honan from Wired.com penned an article on security he titled “Kill the Password: Why a String of Characters Can’t Protect Us Anymore.” He asserts that the password is not effective and a new solution is needed. Unfortunately, Mr. Honan was a victim of hacking. As a result he has a victim’s vendetta. His conclusion is ill conceived even though there are smatterings of truth and good advice. The password is a security barrier much like a lock on your door. In of itself it’s not guaranteeing protection. You can have a good password akin to a steel reinforced door with the best lock money can buy, or you can have a poor password like “password” which is like a sliding lock like on a bathroom stall. But, just like in the real world a lock isn’t always enough. You can have a lock, security system, video cameras, guard dogs, and even armed security guards; but none of that guarantees your protection. Even top secret government agencies can be breached by someone who is just that good (as dramatized in movies like Mission Impossible). And that’s the crux of it. There are real hackers out there that are that good. Killer coding ninja monkeys do exist! We still have locks on our doors, because they still serve their role. Passwords are no different. Security doesn’t end with the password. Most people would agree that stuffing your mattress with your life savings isn’t a good idea even if you have the best locks and security system. Most people agree its safest to have the money in a bank. Essentially this is compartmentalization. Compartmentalization extends to the online world as well. You’re at risk if your online banking accounts are linked to the same account as your social networks. This is especially true if you’re lackadaisical about linking those social networks to outside sources including apps. The object here is to minimize the damage that can be done. An attacker should not be able to get into your bank account, because they breached your Twitter account. It’s time to prioritize once you’ve compartmentalized. This simply means deciding how much security you want for the different compartments which I’ll call security zones. Social networking applications like Facebook provide a lot of security features. However, security features are almost always a compromise with privacy and convenience. It’s similar to an engineering adage, but in this case it’s security, convenience, and privacy – pick two. For example, you might use a safe instead of bank to store your money, because the convenience of having your money closer or the privacy of not having the bank records is more important than the added security. Attackers are going to find exploits in software. Software is complex and depends on other software. The exploits are the responsibility of the software company. But your security is always your responsibility. Complete security is an illusion. But, there is plenty you can do to minimize the risk online just like you do in the physical world. Be safe and enjoy what the Internet has to offer. I expect passwords to be necessary just as long as locks.

• Trouble pre-populating drop down and textarea from MySQL Database

• LEFT OUTER JOIN in Linq - How to Force

  I have a LEFT OUTER OUTER join in LINQ that is combining with the outer join condition and not providing the desired results. It is basically limiting my LEFT side result with this combination. • Can I use a *.tag from another *.tag file in the same /WEB-INF/tags folder?

  Hello, I am trying to refactor my JSP code so that a small conditional test condition gets reused through a *.tag file. There are some big parts of my UI that depend on the value of a two-state property of an object present in the request. Let's say the property is 'gender' and the object is of type Person. Like I said, I would like to simplify & centralize the test on the gender property using a tag. For this purpose, I created two tag files: /WEB-INF/tags/if-male.tag /WEB-INF/tags/if-female.tag Now, I have another tiny spot that gets repeated in all over my application; let's say is the salutation to my site user. With this idea, I created a tag like this: /WEB-INF/tags/salutation.tag As you can imagine, I am trying to use the if-male/if-female test within the salutation.tag file to output 'Mrs.' or 'Mr.' like this: <%@ tag body-content="empty" %> <%@ taglib prefix="g" uri="/WEB-INF/tags" %> <g:if-male> Mr. </g:if-male> <g:if-female> Mrs. </g:if-female> Is the use of the if-male/if-female tags legal within the salutation.tag file? I have tried with such arrangement, but it looks like the JDeveloper 10.1.3.4 compiler gets confused and cannot deal with the salutation.tag tag invoking the other two tags in the same 'library' (folder under /WEB-INF/tags). The reference works perfectly in Jetty 6 and it looks like it works as well if I deploy the application to OC4J directly without relying on JDeveloper to pre-compile all my JSPs. There should be always three asterisks. Samples: MR JONES A ORTEGA*ADDRESS 1*ADDRESS2* Name: MR JONES A ORTEGA Address Line1: ADDRESS 1 Address Line2: ADDRESS 2 A PAUL*ADDR1** Name: A PAUL Address Line1: ADDR1 Address Line2: Not Given My algo is: 1. Iterate through the characters in the line 2. Store all chars in a temp variables until first * is found. Reject the data if no char is found before first occurence of asterisk. If some chars found, use it as the name. 3. Same as step 2 for finding address line 1 and 2 except that this won't reject the data if no char is found My algo looks ugly. The code looks uglier. Spliting using //* doesn't work either since name can be replaced with address line 1 If the data is *Address 1*Address2, split will create two indexes in the array where index 0 will have the value of Address 1 and index 2 will have the value of Address2. Where's the name. Was there a name? Any suggestion?

However, it will fail retrieving those keys that are located at deeper levels. If we add a new record: db.things.insert({foo: {bar: {baaar: true}}}) And we run again the map-reduce +distinct snippet above, we will get: [ "_id", "egg", "foo", "hello", "type" ] But we will not get the bar and the baaar keys, which are nested down in the data structure. The question is: how do I retrieve all keys, no matter their level of depth? Ideally, I would actually like the script to walk down to all level of depth, producing an output such as: ["_id","egg","foo","foo.bar","foo.bar.baaar","hello","type"] Thank you in advance!

  I'm using Perl to perform some file cleansing, and am running into some performance issues. One of the major parts of my code involves standardizing name fields. Is there a better way to implement this kind of logic than what I'm doing currently? Thanks Edit: Quick note, not all the replace functions are just removing periods and spaces.   Last Thursday we had the second webcast in our WebCenter in Action webcast series, "Qualcomm Provides a Seamless Experience for Customers with Oracle WebCenter, where customer Michael Chander from Qualcomm and Vince Casarez & Gourav Goyal from Oracle Partner Keste shared how Oracle WebCenter is powering Qualcomm’s externally facing website and providing a seamless experience for their customers. In case you missed it, here's a recap of the Q&A.   Mike Chandler, Qualcomm Q: Did you run into any issues when integrating all of the different applications together?A: Definitely, our main challenges were in the area of user provisioning and security propagation, all the standard stuff you might expect when hooking up SSO for authentication and authorization. In addition, we spent several iterations getting the UI’s in sync. While everyone was given the same digital material to build too, each team interpreted and implemented it their own way. Initially as a user navigated, if you were looking for it, you could slight variations in color or font or width , stuff like that. So we had to pull all the developers responsible for the UI together and get pixel level agreement on a lot of things so we could ensure seamless transitions across applications. Q: What has been the biggest benefit your end users have seen?A: Wow, there have been several. An SSO enabled environment was huge a win for our users. The portal application that this replaced had not really been invested in by the business. With this project, we had full business participation and backing, and it really showed in some key areas like the shopping experience. For example, while ordering in the previous site, the items did not have any pictures or really usable descriptions. A tremendous amount of work was done to try and make the site more intuitive and user friendly. Site performance has also drastically improved thanks to new hardware, improved database design, and of course the fact that ADF has made great strides in runtime performance. Q: Was there any resistance internally when implementing the solution? If so, how did you overcome that?A: Within a large company, I’m sure there is always going to be competition for large projects, as there was here. Once we got through the technical analysis and settled on the technology choices, it was actually no resistance to implementing the solution. This project was fully driven by the business with the aim of long term growth. I can confidently say that the fact that this project was given the utmost importance by both the business and IT really help put down any resistance that you would typically see while implementing a new solution. Q: Given the performance, what do you estimate to be the top end capacity of the system? A:I think our top end capacity is really only limited by our hardware. I’m comfortable saying we could grow 10x on our current hardware, both in terms of transactions and users. We can easily spin up new JVM instances if needed. We already use less JVM’s than we had planned. In addition, ADF is doing a very good job with his connection pooling and application module pooling, so we see a very good ratio of users connected to the systems vs db connections, without impacting performace. Q: What's the overview or summary of feedback from the users interacting with the site?A: Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive from both the business and our customers. They’re very happy with the new SSO environment , the new LAF, and the performance of the site. Of course, it’s not all roses. No matter what, there are always going to be people that don’t like the layout or the color scheme, etc. By and large though, customers are happy and the business is happy. Q: Can you describe the impressions about the site before and after the project within Qualcomm?A: Before the project, the site worked and people were using it, but most people were not happy with it. It was slow and tended to be a bit tempermental, for example a user would perform a transaction and the system would throw and unexpected error. The user could back up and retry the steps and things would work fine, so why didn’t work the first time?. From a UI perspective, we’d hear comments like it looked like it was built by a high school student.  Vince Casarez & Gourav Goyal, Keste Q: Did you run into any obstacles when implementing the solution?A: It's interesting some people call them "obstacles" on this project we just called them "dependencies".  There were both technical and business related dependencies that we had to work out. Mike points out the SSO dependencies and the coordination and synchronization between the teams to have a seamless login experience and a seamless end user experience.  There was also a set of dependencies on the User Acceptance testing to make sure that everyone understood the use cases for how the system would be used.  With a branching into a new market and trying to match a simple user experience as many consumer sites have today, there was always a tendency for the team members to provide their suggestions on how things could be simpler.  But with all the work up front on the user design and getting the business driving this set of experiences, this minimized the downstream suggestions that tend to distract a team.  In this case, all the work up front allowed us to enumerate the "dependencies" and keep the distractions to a minimum. Q: Was there a lot of custom work that needed to be done for this particular solution?A: The focus for this particular solution was really on the custom processes. The interesting thing is that with the data flows and the integration with applications, there are some pre-built integrations, but realistically for the process flow, we had to build those. The framework and tooling we used made things easier so we didn’t have to implement core functionality, like transitioning from screen to screen or from flow to flow. The design feature of Task Flows really helped speed the development and keep the component infrastructure in line with the dynamic processes.  Task flows and other elements like Skins are core to the infrastructure or technology stack of Oracle. This then allowed the team to center the project focus around the business flows and use cases to meet the core requirements and keep the project on time. Q: What do you think were the keys to success for rolling out WebCenter?A:  The 5 main keys to success were: 1) Sponsorship from the whole organization around this project from senior executive agreement, business owners driving functionality, and IT development alignment; 2) Upfront design planning and use case definition to clearly define the project scope and requirements; 3) Focussed development and project management aligned with the top level goals and drivers; 4) User acceptance and usability testing along the way to identify potential issues and direct resolution of the issues;  and 5) Constant prioritization of the issues for development to fix by the business.  It also helps to have great team chemistry and really smart people working on the project. The worksheet contains information regarding different purchases, and each purchaser is identified with their own ID number. Below is an example of what my spreadsheet looks like now (however I do have more columns): ID Salutation Address ID Name Donation ID Name Tickets 9 Mr. John Doe 123 12 Ms. Jane Smith 100.00 12 Ms.Jane Smith 300.00 12 Ms. Jane Smith 456 22 Mr. Mike Man 500.00 84 Ms. Jo Smith 300.00 What I would like to do is somehow sort my data so that everythign with the same unique identifier (ID) lines up on the same row. For example ID 12 Jane Smith - all the information for her will show up under her name matched by her ID number, and ID 22 will match up with 22 etc... When I merged all of my spreadsheets together, I sorted them all by ID number, however my problem is, not everyone who made a donation bought a ticket or some people just bought tickets and nothing us, so sorting doesn't work. Beginning in Real World However, many former-students will be disappointed to find out that once they become employees, learning is not over.  Many companies are discovering the importance and benefits to training their employees.  You can breathe a sigh of relief, though, because much for this kind of training there are not usually tests! We often think that we go to school for our younger years so that we do all our learning all at once, and then for the rest of our lives we use that knowledge.  But in so many cases, but especially for developers, the opposite is true.  It takes many years of schools to learn the basics of a field, and then our careers are spent learning to become experts. For this, and so many other reasons, training is very important.  Example one: developer training leads to better employees.  A company is only as good as the people it employs, and one way to ensure that you have employed the right candidate is through training.  Training can take a regular “stone” and polish it into a “diamond.”  Employees who have been well-trained will be better at their jobs and produce a better product. Most Expensive Resource Did you know that one of the most expensive operating costs for any company is not buying goods, or advertising, but its employees – especially having to hire new employees.  Bringing in new people, getting them up to speed, and providing them with perks to attract them to a company is a huge cost for companies.  So employee retention – keep the employees you already have, and keeping them happy – is incredibly important from a business aspect.  And research shows that a well-trained employee is a happy employee.  They feel more confident in their job, happier with their position, and more cared-about – and therefore less likely to leave in search of a better job.  Employee training leads to better retention. Good Moral On the subject of keeping employees happy in order to keep them at a company, the complement to that research shows that happier employees are more efficient and overall better at their jobs.  You don’t have to be a scientist to figure out why this is true.  An employee who feel that his company cares about him and his educational future will work harder for the company.  He or she will put in that extra hour during the busy season that makes all the difference in the end.  Good morale is good for the company. If good morale is better for the company, you know that it goes hand-in-hand with something even better – better efficiency.  An employee who is well trained obviously knows more about their job and all the technical aspects.  That means when a problem crops up – and they inevitably do – this employee will be well-equipped to deal with that problem with fewer problems, and no need to go searching for help from higher up.  When employees are well trained, companies run more smoothly. A Better Product Of course, all of these “pros” for employee training are leading up to the one thing that companies truly care about – a better product.  We have shown that employees who have been trained to be competitive in the market are happier at the company, they are more efficient, and their morale is better.  The overall result is that the company’s product – whether it is a database, piece of equipment, or even a physical good – is better.  And a better product will always be more competitive on the market. • A view from the call center for the Nashville Flood telethon

  I want to break away from my usual topic of something technical and talk about what I experienced tonight while working in the call center for the Nashville Flood telethon, which was broadcast on WSMV, CNN, and The Weather Channel.  We started receiving calls about 7pm local time and to be honest, I had no idea what to expect when going into this.  I mean, I'm a pretty good talker, but this is different...We had a good script of what to say and how we were supposed to say it, as well as paper forms and pens that we used to collect information from people who wanted to donate their money to help.  I took my first few calls pretty easily and it went pretty quick and easy.  Everyone was upbeat and happy to be in the call center as well as people happy to be donating money. Pizza, snacks, and soft drinks were flowing well.  Everyone is smiling and happy.  :) About 3 or 4 calls into my night, I got a call from a lady that had lost 2 family members in West Nashville who drowned in the floods.  She was crying when she called and I of course tried to console her.  She told me how bad her situation was, losing family members and much of her neighborhood.  After all this, she still just wanted to help other people.  She was donating all the money that she could to the telethon and I want to share a direct quote from her: "I want to donate this instead of buying flowers for my family members' funeral because people out there need help.". Please let me pause while I get myself together <again>.  That caught me so off guard (and still does). I had kids calling wanting to donate their allowance, open their piggy banks, whatever they could do.  These are kids.  Kids not much older than my boys.  Kids who should be focused on buying the next cool video game or toy or whatever but wanted to do something.  Everyone just seemed to want to help. I took calls from as far away as British Columbia as well and pretty much coast to coast.  how cool is that? Yet another thing that caught me off guard.  This kind lady that called from British Columbia told me how much she loved visiting Nashville and just hated to see this happen.  I belive that she said that she will be attending the CMA Fest this year too.  I was sure to tell her not to cancel her plans!  :) It felt like every call I took (and I took A LOT, as did everyone else) was very personal and heartfelt.  I've never had the privelage to do anything like this and fell lucky to have been able to help out with answering phones and logging donations.  Nashville will bounce back very quickly, people are out there day and night helping each other, and the spirits are very high here.  I hope that one day, my kids read this blog and better understand who they are, where they come from, and what the human spirt is and can be.  I love this city, I love the people here, I love the culture and even more than ever am proud to say that this is me.  This is us.  We are Nashville!

• Global Temporary Table "On commit delete rows" functionality discrepancy.

  I have a global temporary table. I called my GTT, for that was it's initials. My GTT never hurt anyone, and did everything I bade of it. I asked my GTT to delete rows on commit. This is a valid function in the creation script of my GTT in oracle. I wanted to be able to have different users see GTT with their own data, and not the data of other people's sessions. 'Delete rows on commit' worked perfectly in our test environment. GTT and I were happy. But then, I deployed GTT as part of an update to functionality to a client's database. The database doesn't like to play well with GTT. GTT called me up all upset and worried, because it wasn't holding any data any more, and didn't know why. GTT told me that if someone did: insert into my_GTT (description) values ('Happy happy joy joy') he would sing-song back: 1 row inserted. However, if the same person tried select * from my_GTT; GTT didn't know what to do, and he replied 0 rows returned. GTT was upset that he didn't know what his playmate had inserted. Please, Stackoverflow, why would GTT forget what was placed into him? He can remember perfectly well at home, but out in the cold harsh world, he just gets so scared. :(
