• Changing default playback device on Windows 8

  Previously, on Vista and Windows 7, changing the Default Playback device would occur instantly. For example, audio is coming out of my speakers, I right click the Volume Control, click Playback Devices then I select another device and click Set Default. Audio would be transferred immediately. Unfortunately, now, with Windows 8, I need to kill whatever process what outputting sound, and restart it for the change to take effect. Is there something that can be done about it so that changes are taken into account immediately?

• Frequent Disconnects ubuntu desktop 12.10 x64 intel 82579V e1000e

  I'm having frequent disconnects with my new install of Ubuntu 12.10. I tried updating the kernel driver to the latest intel release to no avail. My expertise is spent. It happens anywhere between 1 min and 10 min. This problem (lack of documentation on radeon driver) is similar to these: Radeon display driver clones monitors while using Xinerama (moderators decision to close that problem was wrong) Ubuntu 12.10 multi-monitor setup isn't working The problem is solvable, because this hardware worked as three headed for me earlier with gentoo/xorg-server-1.3 Xorg -configure creates setup for the first monitor on the first GPU Please don't advise to use fglrx/aticonfig/amdcccle (this goes against my religion beliefs)

• Cant get lm-sensors to load ATI Radeon temp and fan or output all settings

  New to Linux and having minor issues :/ . I followed this guide initially but did not recieve the proper output and did not show my ATI Radeon HD 5000 temp or fan speed. Then used this guide, same problems exhibited. No issues installing and no errors. I think its not reading i2c for some reason. The proprietary driver is installed and functioning correctly according fglrxinfo. I can use aticonfig commands and view both temp and fan. Any ideas on how to get the ATI Radeon sensors working under 'sensors'? • What does intermittent "Input/output error" suggest?

  Lately my Ubuntu 12 system has started acting very strange. Sometimes the computer freezes and then unfreezes 2 minutes later, and other times when I try a basic command like less I get the error bash: /usr/bin/less: Input/output error. But this is intermittent too. Any suggestions? Also if I try sudo reboot and enter my password, I get sudo: unable to open /var/lib/sudo/plato/7: Read-only file system Before I used to be able to do sudo reboot fine. If I tail /var/log/syslog I do see these curious lines: .... ata1: softreset failed (device not ready) .... ata1: hard resettting link .... ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) What can I do to fix this?

  I have a Voip Softphone software that I would like to start using on my Ubuntu 14.04 box. Here's the thing. My system sound right now goes through my HDMI to my speaker system so I can play music all day ;-) I have a bluetooth headset connected to the machine as well. What I am wondering is if there is a way to: Auto-mute the music when a call comes in Auto-switch the sound devices when a call comes in, from my hdmi sound device, to my headset Auto-switch back when the call ends, and auto-un-mute the music Or even just an auto-switch to the headset? I can always pause the music ;)

  Hi, I am trying to complete the picture of how the PC and the OS interacts together. And I am at point, where I am little out of guess when it comes to device drivers. Please, don´t write things like its too complicated, or you don´t need to know when using high programming laguage and winapi functions. I want to know, it´s for study purposes. So, the very basic structure of how OS and PC (by PC I mean of course HW) is how I see it is that all other than direct CPU commands, which can CPU do on itself (arithmetic operation, its registers access and memory access) must pass thru OS. Mainly becouse from ring level 3 you cannot use in and out intructions which are used for acesing other HW. I know that there is MMIO,but it must be set by port comunication first. It was not like this all the time. Even I am bit young to remember MSDOS, I know you could access HW directly, becouse there ws no limitation, no ring mode. So you could to write string to diplay use wheather DOS function, or directly acess video card memory and write it by yourself. But as OS developed, there is no longer this possibility. But it is fine, since OS now handles all the HW comunication, and frankly it more convinient and much more safe (I would say the only option) in multitasking environment. So nowdays you instead of using int instructions to use BIOS mapped function or DOS function you call dll which internally than handles everything you don´t need to know about. I understand this. I also undrstand that device drivers is the piece of code that runs in ring level 0, so it can do all the HW interactions. But what I don´t understand is connection between OS and device driver. Let´s take a example - I want to make a sound card make a sound. So I call windows API to acess sound card, but what happens than? Does windows call device drivers to do so? But if it does call device driver, does it mean, that all device drivers which can be called by winAPI function, must have routines named in some specific way? I mean, when I have new sound card, must its drivers have functions named same as the old one? So Windows can actually call the same function from its perspective? But if Windows have predefined sets of functions requored by device drivers, that it cannot use new drivers that doesent existed before last version of OS came out. Please, help me understand this mess. I am really getting mad. Thanks.

• DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

  I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used. • Using a portable USB monitor in Ubuntu 13.04 (AOC e1649Fwu - DisplayLink)

  Having access to a little bit of IT hardware extravaganza isn't that easy here in Mauritius for exactly two reasons - either it is simply not available or it is expensive like nowhere. Well, by chance I came across an advert by a local hardware supplier and their offer of the week caught my attention - a portable USB monitor. Sounds cool, and the specs are okay as well. It's completely driven via USB 2.0, has a light weight, the dimensions would fit into my laptop bag and the resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels is okay for a second screen. Long story, short ending: I called them and only got to understand that they are out of stock - how convenient! Well, as usual I left some contact details and got the regular 'We call you back' answer. Surprisingly, I didn't receive a phone call as promised and after starting to complain via social media networks they finally came back to me with new units available - and *drum-roll* still the same price tag as promoted (and free delivery on top as one of their employees lives in Flic en Flac). Guess, it was a no-brainer to get at least one unit to fool around with. In worst case it might end up as image frame on the shelf or so... The usual suspects... Ubuntu first! Of course, the packing mentions only Windows or Mac OS as supported operating systems and without hesitation at all, I hooked up the device on my main machine running on Ubuntu 13.04. Result: Blackout... Hm, actually not the situation I was looking for but okay can't be too difficult to get this piece of hardware up and running. Following the output of syslogd (or dmesg if you prefer) the device has been recognised successfully but we got stuck in the initialisation phase. A quick and dirty research on the net gave me some hints towards the udlfb framebuffer device for USB DisplayLink devices. By default this kernel module is blacklisted $ less /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf | grep udl#blacklist udlblacklist udlfb and it is recommended to load it manually. Display okay? Test run on Windows Just to be on the safe side and to exclude any hardware related defects or whatsoever - you never know what happened during delivery. I moved the display to a new position on the opposite side of my laptop, installed the display drivers first in Windows Vista (I know, I know...) as recommended in the manual, and then finally hooked it up on that machine. Tada! Display has been recognised correctly and I have a proper choice between cloning and extending my desktop. Testing whether the display is working properly - using Windows Vista Okay, good to know that there is nothing wrong on the hardware side just software... Back to Ubuntu - Kernel too old Some more research on Google and various hits recommend that the original displaylink driver has been merged into the recent kernel development and one should manually upgrade the kernel image (and both header) packages for Ubuntu. At least kernel 3.9 or higher would be necessary, and so I went out to this URL: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ and I downloaded all the good stuff from the v3.9-raring directory. This information belongs to the past and is not valid on kernel 3.9 or higher. Same hardware but Windows 8 Of course, I wanted to know how the latest incarnation from Redmond would handle the new hardware... Flawless! Most interesting aspect here: I did not use the driver installation medium on purpose. And I was right... not too long afterwards a dialog with the EULA of DisplayLink appeared on the main screen. And after confirmation of same it took some more seconds and the external USB monitor was ready to rumble. Well, and not only that one... but see for yourself. This time Windows 8 was the easiest solution after all. Resume I can highly recommend this type of hardware to anyone asking me. Although, it's dimensions are 15.6" it is actually lighter than my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it still fits into my laptop bag without any issues. From now on... no more single screen while developing software on the road!

• How can find out the device Id of my unmounted DVD?

  When I put a DVD into the DVD drive, it appears in Nautilus Places, but is not automatically mounted. (this is by personal choice). In this unmounted state, mount (of course) reports nothing, and likewise for df.. but Nautilus is aware of the DVD hardware unit and has read the Label; which it shows in Places So it seems to me that Nautilus has already accessed the DVD devices (Did it temporarily mount it?)... The main point of my question was to determine how to find the device Id of an unmounted device .. but as I've been writing this, I now think it may not be as simple as that... This issue came up because I wanted to test this command cat iso-pieces.* | growisofs -Z /dev/dvd=/dev/stdin, but then realized that I didn't know how to get my DVD's device Id. ... and does the above command requires a mounted device, or does it write directly to the device? ... as you can see, I'm a bit vague about devices :) Come to think of it maybe Nautalus read the DVD device directly, because when all is said and done, something has to read/write directly to it. info growisofs says: Under Linux it will most likely be an ide-scsi device such as "/dev/scd0 How can I find this Id via a script?

• ERRNO 5 Input/Output Error

  Going up for my first ubuntu installation and encountered a critical error. Mind that I am installing on my Macbook Pro, and have already removed all other partitions. (I'm installing with a CD) My Ubuntu version is: "ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386" So once the installation gets to something around "Finishing copying files", a great big "[ERRNO5] Input/Output Error" pops up on the screen. Obviously this halts and crashes the whole installation. Now, I've already run a disk check, memtest, and cpu load test, and all came up green. I have also redownloaded ubuntu twice, md5 match both times, and burnt four disks. None got past this error. If anyone could help me out, that would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

• Problem recreating BCD on Windows 7 64bit - The requested system device cannot be found

  NVIDIA drivers upgrade crashed my Windows 7 installation, so I'm working to undo the damage. What I can do: I can boot Windows install from the USB drive, and I can boot the Hiren's Boot CD. Although automated Windows repair fails, I can get to command prompt when I boot Windows install from USB drive, and I can see my drive and all my data. What I cannot do: I cannot boot into Windows - I get this message: Windows failed to start. A recent hardwware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1.insert windos cd and run a repair your computer option. File: /boot/bcd Status: 0xc000000f Info: an error occured while attempting to read the boot configuration data. It seems that something is wrong with my /Boot/BCD, so I'm trying to recreate it from scratch. I've tried all the methods detailed here (including Windows repair which fails), and I'm left with the last one (near the bottom of that page). When I type the following command as in the tutorial: bcdedit.exe /import c:\boot\bcd.temp ...it fails with the following error: The store import operation has failed. The requested system device cannot be found. Many Google results say that I must use diskpart to set my partition active, however it's already set as active. Also, when I try this: bcdedit /enum It fails with similar message: The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be found. Does anyone know what does that error message mean, and what is the requested system device? I'd like to avoid having to reinstall Windows since all the files on disk seem to be fine.

• General input/output error on OpenOffice 3.2

  I have been working on a research paper in OpenOffice 3.2 Word Processor and I had a slide show OpenOffice 3.2 Presentation. I saved both frequently and they were not very big (no more then 5 pages of text or a few slides). A few days after I last edited and saved them, I tried to open the slide show but I received window saying: General Error. General input/output error When I tried opening the paper, it asked for ASCII Filter Options (font, character, language, and paragraph break). When I set the normal settings, a single blank document opened with nothing on it. I looked at both of the file's properties and the size was 0 or 1.5 KB, and the volume was unknown. I recently installed some updates for Ubuntu 10.10 and everything else in my computer is working normally including other documents and slide shows. Is this a fixable crash?

• Pulseaudio no sound card detected. Dummy output only

  I'm using 12.10 Quantal with Openbox and a .xinitrc script at login instead of a display manager. Its a relatively fresh install and I noticed when I opened pavucontrol the only output was a dummy one. I check around and it appears that my soundcard is physically installed but Pulseaudio isn't detecting it. I'm really unsure what I should do but any help getting my audio back would be appreciated. • No sound 12.04 (Dummy output)

  Its been weeks with no sound. I feel like Ive tried everything but somethings just dont seem right. I am a new user and so far i love Ubuntu but this sound issue is making me unsure. Im NOT muted. Ive tried multiple jacks, front and back. in alsamixer it says choose sound card and I have only thr 'hda Intel' option. In pulseaudio I only have 'dummy output'. When I have Youtube on I can see audio being detected in pavucontrol but nothing is coming out of the speakers. • (CRON) info (No MTA installed, discarding output)

  I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS an a number of servers. I have not added any cron jobs or edited my crontab on those servers, however, at around the same time for each machine, I get a 75% CPU spike and the following info in my syslog at the time of the spike: CRON[8380]: (CRON) info (No MTA installed, discarding output) I have mono-complete installed and am running a service stack webserver. What is the best way for me to stop this from happening? I would like to be able to remove the CPU spike. Thanks

• HDMI audio output problems with Radeon card

  No matter how much advice I follow, I still cannot get any audio to come out through my HDMI connection. I've tried downloading the latest proprietary FGLRX graphics drivers, and I've also gone into /etc/default/grub and altered GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" into this GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.audio=1" But still I cannot get any sound nor can I get HDMI sound output to show up in Sound Settings or Pulse Audio Volume Control. I can get video to show up just fine on my monitor through HDMI so I'm sure this problem is fixable! I know this is an old problem with Ubuntu, but any new strategies into the problem would be much appreciated. With that being said, here are some of my specs: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS AMD Radeon HD 7520G

In any case throughout the day I notice that my computer makes apparently random device-connect and/or device-disconnect ("boink") sounds. I've noticed that this happens on each of three computers I work with at home, my wife's computer, and my machine at work. It happens without any user action at all - i.e. I'll be just sitting there (hands off my mouse and keyboard), and the computer will make the sound. There is no visual queue or anything. Just the sound. I have sometimes gone in pursuit of the sound - running virus scans, examining event logs and such, and observing task manager - but have never had any luck tracking this thing down, but have not had any luck.   I'm trying to print a colored string to a gnome-terminal using ANSI escape codes, but, although it works for the custom colors, or even the 256 extra color, it doesn't work with RGB codes.
