• How can I remove and re-install Unity?

  Unity is misbehaving after installing GLX Dock - HUD does not open with GLX Dock turned off and there are ugly shadows in the panel,three control buttons (close,minimise,maximise) and "Ubuntu Desktop" label when there are no apps running.I have to click the top panel to get the super key to open the dash. I have tried unity --reset and unity --replace commands ,but they do not help. Can I un-install and re-install Unity?

• Question about modeling with MVC (the pattern, not the MS stuff / non web)

  I'm working on an application in which I'm looking to employ the MVC pattern, but I've come up against a design decision point I could use some help with. My application is going to deal with the design of state-machines. Currently the MVC model holds information about the machine's states, inputs, outputs, etc. The view is going to show a diagram for the machine, graphically allowing the user to add new states, establish transitions, and put the states in a pleasing arrangement, among other things. I would like to store part of the diagram's state (e.g. the x and y state positions) when the machine information is stored for later retrieval, and am wondering how best to go about structuring the model(s?) for this. It seems like this UI information is more closely related to the view than to the state-machine model, so I was thinking that a secondary model might be in order, but I am reluctant to pursue this route because of the added complexity. Adding this information to the current model doesn't seem the right way to go about it either. This is the my first time using the MVC pattern so I'm still figuring things out. Any input would be appreciated.

• USB keyboard does not load after 13.10 upgrade

  Problem: Running kernel 3.11.0-12-generic after a Ubuntu upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 my USB keyboard is not recognised, thus I am not able to unlock my encrypted disk. I suspect it might be related to a minimal/incorrect install of initrd. Question: How do I go about getting the newest kernel to recognise my generic USB keyboard, allowing me to unlock my encrypted disk? What I have tried: I have already re-installed the newest kernel: sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-generic linux-image and I have also updated the initrd: update-initramfs -c -k 3.11.0-12-generic Back story: I just completed upgrading my Ubuntu system from 13.04 to 13.10. When I subsequently rebooted by system I was no longer able to enter my encryption password (passphrase) as the keyboard drivers did not load. Temporary workaround: Earlier in the boot process (before the keyboard stops working) I was able to enter GRUB menu were I choose to boot from an older kernel (3.8.0-31-generic) which did load the USB keyboard drivers. This is currently the kernel I am running. Thanks

• /build folder used by PEAR

  I've just noticed a root directory (/build) which I can't seem to find any information for. It looks like it's some sort of staging ground for PEAR (PHP). There are only two folders of different php versions in it, and each of those has a few PEAR tar files I've installed (via the PEAR command line). I'm really only asking this question because I find is strange PEAR (and only PEAR) would create its own root directory to store files. Is this normal? Does Ubuntu provide a /build directory for applications to use?

• When do I bite the bullet and hire a developer? [closed]

  I have an awesome URL, I've had it since the mid 90's, and up until around 2002 I was having an awesome time writing music reviews and features into static pages and adding their URL to static index pages and everything was just great. Then things got complicated really fast, and for one reason or another I handed the site over to a very talented friend who turned it into a db based site run by cf. Now, here I am around twelve years later putting it all back together using mysql, php and css on a need-to-learn basis and even though I'm sooo close to where I want it to be I realize, erm, it should have been written using mysqli etc etc ad infinitum. So I'm wondering at what point do I just give in and hire a developer to take over, how much does it even cost, and how do I know I'm working with someone who is better than I am?

• No Mouse Pointer - ubuntu 13.10

  just installed 13.10 on my HP Envy M6 laptop and have no mouse pointer. My USB mouse does not work and neither does the track pad. When I booted from a USB key everything worked OK but once installed it seems to have broken the mouse. Unlike other posts, there is no flicker, it simply doesn't work at all. My laptop is an i5 with 6gb and dual Intel and AMD radeon graphics. Any help would be gratefully received as I really can't stand Windows 8 any longer. Thanks.

• Cookie Settings Storage Method

  I've got an web app that needs to store some non-sensitive preferences for the user. Right now I'm storing their language preference and what mode they want a window opened in by default in two cookies: "lang" can be "en" or "de" "mode" can be "design" or "view" I might add a few more in the future. I'm not sure how many, but probably never more than a dozen. Language is parsed on every request, whereas the mode cookie is only used occasionally. I saw a recommendation that made sense I shouldn't try to do what I was originally planning to do and strongly type a user settings class deserialized on each request because of the overhead involved. I see three options here and I'm not sure which is the best overall. Keep things as they are, add a new cookie for each new setting Combine the cookies into a single settings cookie and add future values to it Change the mode cookie to settings (leaving language alone), add new user settings values to the settings cookie All would work obviously. I'm leaning toward option three, but I'm not sure if there's a best practice for this?

• Cannot Start Nginx Compiled from Source

  I am trying to compile Nginx from source based on the original compiled Nginx server running on my DigitalOcean server ( Ubuntu-14.04 64x ) but with a few extra modules. I can get everything installed smoothly but I can not get it to start. I am sure the ini is correct because I copied the original source off the current running Nginx server [ Even though I see that Nginx now adds the ini when compiling fron source ]. And now to start the server: service nginx start And this is where s#!+ hits the fan - Nada. I check to see if Nginx is running with service --status-all and its not. Also with nginx -V and its not installed??? I reboot the system too and still nothing. So I am not sure what is wrong here. The ini was copied over from the old server along with all the other config files after deleting the old files. When I opened the new compiled files, the nginx default data was present so I replaced them with my old original data prior to starting the new server for the first time. Also to be safe, I rm /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default and symlinked with ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/default /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default with no errors and I verified that the data was in the sites-enabled/default file. I don't think the server really/fully installed because of the nginx -V result: The program 'nginx' can be found in the following packages: * nginx-core * nginx-extras * nginx-full * nginx-light * nginx-naxsi Try: apt-get install <selected package> Do/should I apt-get install nginx-1.7.4 ?? Or what package do I use being that its a custom package and make install earlier did nothing?? • Sending microphone input over Remote Desktop 7.0

  I am using Remote Desktop 7 (the new version that came out with Windows 7) to control a Windows XP Pro machine. I have selected "Record from this computer" in the Remote Audio settings. When I connect to the machine, go to the control panel, open the sound panel, and go to the audio tab, I find that the default sound playback device is "Microsoft RDP Audio Driver". However, there is no default sound recording device. As expected, my IP phone thinks there is no recording device. If I am sitting in front of the computer with a mic plugged in, it works just fine. Has anybody else been able to get this work appropriately? Is there anything that I have to setup on the XP machine to get this working? Thanks in advance. Edit: As John T pointed out below, you have to be connecting to a Windows 7 Enterprise or Ultimate machine for this to work. I've also found out that Multi-monitor support has the same requirement.

• 3GB RAM Installed and Detected by BIOS, Windows Vista 32bit Only Sees 2GB

  I am attempting to install more RAM on a Windows Vista 32bit machine which is using a X6DAL-XG motherboard and the RAM amount reported in the BIOS is 3GB+, but Windows is only reporting 2GB installed. The motherboard has 6 RAM bays which I have populated with various combinations of 4 1GB sticks, and 2 512mb sticks, but no matter how I configure them Windows doesn't see more than 2GB. I realize of course 32-bit Windows has a 3gb cap on memory, but that doesn't explain why it will only report 2GB when there are in fact (currently) 5GB installed. I should think I would be able to see at least 3GB. According to the spec list for the motherboard the minimum RAM requirements are DDR333/266mhz installed in pairs. I have done this exactly, and the BIOS isn't reporting any problems at POST. RAM Configuration (according to CPU-Z): Slot #1: Kingston 128mx72D266C25 - 1024mb PC2100 (133mhz) Slot #2: Kingston KVR266X72RC25/1024 - 1024mb PC2100 (133mhz) Slot #3: PQI - 512mb PC2700 (166mhz) Slot #4: Kingston 128mx72D266C25 - 1024mb PC2100 (133mhz) Slot #5: Kingston KVR266X72RC25/1024 - 1024mb PC2100 (133mhz) Slot #6: PQI - 512mb PC2700 (166mhz) I'm not sure if memory specs above conflict with this statement in the motherboard manual or not: Memory Support The X6DAL-XG supports up to 12GB/24GB of registered ECC DDR333/266 (PC2700/PC2100) memory. The motherboard was designed to support 4GB (PC2100) modules in each slot, but only the 2GB modules have been tested. When using registered ECC DDR333 (PC2700) memory, installing four pieces of double-banked memory or six pieces of single-banked memory is supported. So, am I doing something wrong with the RAM I have now, or is there some sort of compatibility problem which I am missing? Thanks!

However, it is linking to my other table and cascading fine. • How do I troubleshoot a segfault in Ubuntu that occurs when typing a bogus command?

  We've got a production server running Ubuntu 11.10. We're encountering segfaults that appear under various conditions. The simplest reproducible case is when we login to an ssh session as our administrative user and enter a bogus command. You'd expect the standard "command not found" error message. Instead, we get a segfault in python. The user's default shell is /bin/bash. Many people have touched this server over the past year, so I'm wondering if it is missing libraries, incorrectly installed packages, etc. I'm hoping that if we can understand what's going wrong in this case, it will help explain why we're getting segfaults in a couple of other scenarios. • ESXI guests not using available CPU resources

  I have a VMWare ESXI 5.0.0 (it's a bit old, I know) host with three guest VMs on it. For reasons unknown, the guests will not use much of the availble CPU resources. I have all three guests in a single pool, with the hosts all configured to use the same amount of resource shares, so they're basically 33% each. The three guests are basically identically configured as far as their VM resources go. So the problem is, even when the guests are performing what should be very 'busy' activitites, such as at bootup, the actual host CPU consumed is something tiny, like 33mhz, when seen via vSphere console's "Virtual Machines" tab when viewing properties for the pool. And of course, the performance of the guest VMs is terrible. The host has plenty of CPU to spare. I've tried tinkering with individual guest VM resource settings; cranking up the reservation, etc. No matter. The guests just refuse to make use of the abundant CPU available to them, and insist on using a sliver of the available resources. Any suggestions? Update after reading various comments below Per the suggestions below, I did remove the guests from the application pool; this didn't make any difference. I do understand that the guests are not going to consume resources they do not need. I have tried to do a remote perfmon on the guest which is experiencing long boot times, but I cannot connect to the guest remotely with perfmon (guest is w2k8r2 server). Host graphs for CPU, Mem, Disk are basically flatlining; very little demand. Same is true for the guest stats; while the guest itself seems to be crawling, the guest resource graphing shows very little activity across CPU, Mem, Disk. Host is a Dell PowerEdge 2900, has 2 physical CPU,20gb RAM. Guest2 has: VM ver. 7, 2vCPU, 4gb RAM, 140gb storage which lives on a RAID-5 array on the host. Guest3 has: VM ver. 7, 1vCPU, 2gb RAM, 2tb storage which lives on a RAID-5 ISCSI NAS box Perhaps I am making a false assumption that if a guest has a demand for CPU (e.g. Windows Task Manager shows 100% CPU), the host would supply the guest with more CPU (mem, disk) on demand. Another Update After checking the stats, it would appear that the host is indeed not busy at all, neither is the guest. I believe I have a good idea on the issue, though; a messed-up VMWare Tools install. The guest has VMware Tools on it, but the host says it does not. VMWare Tools refuses to uninstall, refuses to be upgraded, refuses to be recognized. While I cannot say with authority, this would appear to be something worth investigation. I do not know the origin of the guest itself, nor the specifics on the original VMWare Tools install. Following various bits of googling, I did come up with a few suggestions that went nowhere. To that end, I was going to delete this question, but was prompted not to do so since so many folks answered. My suspicion right now is; the problem truly is the guest; the guest is not making a demand on the host, and as a natural result, the host is treating the guest accordingly. My Final Update I am 99% certain the guest VM had something fundamentally wrong with it re VMWare Tools. I created a clone of a different VM with a near-identical OS config, but a properly working install of VMWare tools. The guest runs just great, and takes up it's allotment of resources when it needs to; e.g. it eats up about 850mhz CPU during startup, then ticks down to idle once the guest OS is stable.

  For the past two years I have been using John Maisey's most excellent iCal Reply Checker to take control over iCal's aggressive notification emails. Sadly, it doesn't work in OS X 10.6. (John clearly states on his web site that it's for 10.4 and 10.5, so this is entirely my fault, not at all his.) Does anyone know another way to prevent iCal from sending mail? Thanks.

  We have 12 Laptop Pc's that we have upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7. The laptops are used by staff on away days. They log on to a local account on the machine - say User1 with no password. On the Windows XP Login screen there was a drop down menu allowing them to log on to the Local Machine. However in Windows7 there is no such box and it is confusing staff. Windows 7 tries to log into the domain by default, it doesn't seem to remember where the user last logged into. Is there a way to set Windows7 to log on to the local machine by default instead of the domain? I do not want the staff to have to type for example stafflaptop1\User1 when they log on.

• Windows 7 boot problem on a Lenovo Thinkpad Z61m 9450HAG

  Hello, I recently did a full upgrade of windows 7 on my thinkpad, everything worked fine after up until the second reboot (the first reboot after some updates installed worked OK). At second reboot time the system would just black screen just before the Windows logo appears, disk/wireless/power/battery lights are all lit and the disk light is active (flickering). However, if I remove my battery and boot with just power it boots fine and quickly, and everything is OK. Any help on why this wont boot with battery plugged in is greatly appreciated - i need to take this battery out on the road/trains etc.... Cheers Matt

• Can I upgrade the processor in my laptop (Satellite L455)?

  I have a Toshiba Satellite L455-S5975 which is about three years old. The processor is currently an Intel Celeron 900. Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade this to a newer one? I have heard the Core 2 Duo T6600 is a compatible replacement for my processor on other brands of computers, and I know the two have the same socket type (PGA478). I mostly need to know if this or any other newer processors are compatible with the Satellite's motherboard.
