• How do I view how many concurrent long polling requests there are on my server?

  My host is Joyent. My host says I have 15 process limit and prstat -J shows those processes but that doesn't tell me how many long polling requests are currently being served. I could record it myself but that would add alot of performance overhead. I need to know when the server is at its long polling limits. I know this limit occurs far before the memory or CPU is used up. From experimentation, I've already verified that the number of long polls open is NOT equivalant to the number of processes running, probably because each process has multiple threads, each serving a request. thanks.

  Hi, I'm trying to rewrite some Spring 1.2 code to Spring 3.0 one. Currently I'm stuck with JSP resolved by URL problem. Application uses separate JSP files with different layouts for serving the same model from the same controller. The JSP is switched using interceptor, that intercepts the url and changes the view. For example: /design_one/mypage.htm -> MyPageController -> /design_one/mypage.jsp /design_two/mypage.htm -> MyPageController -> /design_two/mypage.jsp Is there a way to make same or similar functionality using something better than raw interceptors?

• PHP Captcha without session

  Ok, here is an issue: in the project i'm working on, we can't rely on server-side sessions for any functionality. The problem is that common captcha solutions from preventing robotic submits require session to store the string to match captcha against. The question is - is there any way to solve the problem without using sessions? What comes to my mind - is serving hidden form field, containing some hash, along with captcha input field, so that server then can match these two values together. But how can we make this method secure, so that it couldn't be used to break captcha easily.

  In my thesis I need to test different architectures. A request to a REST web service developed using Apache CXF and Spring MVC with MySQL as back end serving references(a field in database) to images,audio and video files stored in file system. In the response message, what is the best method to send the content to the client(another application using the service which I developed). URI: http://www.filmservices.com/film/{id} A client here is not the end user. Send the encoded hyperlink's(where the content is stored in the file system) to the client, so that the client renders the response and displays it to the browser. Use Base64 to encode the message(image,audio,video) and send it to the client. Main concern is performance.

• Controlling Windows Media Player through PHP / batch files

  I'm currently writing a tiny webapp for my HTPC (actually, a PC serving as both a media player and web- / fileserver) that will allow me to remotely control the playing of audio, without having to turn on my TV just to switch songs. I'm using Windows Media Player as my audio player of choice, and I thought I could control it through PHP's COM Class. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find any documentation or examples on controlling WMP through this interface. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? A second (and much less preferable) solution would be to use PHP's exec() call to start batch files that, in turn, control WMP.

• FastCGI has to be restarted for new content to be displayed on my Django site

  I'm currently testing serving my Django site with Nginx, FastCGI and Flup. The server is configured roughly as described in the Django Advent article. I had to do some minor modifications in order to make it work in Ubuntu 9.10. The problem is that when I add new content it doesn't show up on the page before I restart the FastCGI process. I haven't enabled any caching functionality in Django, and when I query the DB from the Django shell it works as expected. Anybody got ideas to what's causing this?

• Node.JS Server Cuts Off Frequently?

  I have a Node JS Server where I am using Socket.IO to stream content to the browser. It works great for about 45 minutes or so of streaming, then it will usually cut out. There are no "errors" reported in the terminal and the Node server acts like it is in, however the page I am serving clearly stops working. What are my options for trying to get to the bottom of this? Could this be a configuration issue with Node/Socket.IO? is there any basic error logging you would recommend I setup?

I know that the Response object contains some properties that control cache expiration. I know that these properties can be used to control HTTP caching for response that I am serving from my code: Response.Expires Response.ExpiresAbsolute Response.CacheControl or alternatively Response.AddHeader("Expires", "Thu, 01 Dec 1994 16:00:00 GMT"); The question is how do I set the Expires header for resources that are served automatically, e.g. images, css and such?

  Hello, When serving an iframe application in Facebook, is there anyway I can know when a user visits my site through Facebook as an application or if he reached the site directly (typed my domain URL in the browser)? I know I can check if the user has a cookie (named "u") which tells me that the user used facebook to get an access_token. However, if the user visited the application one minute ago and got the access_token cookie, but then typed the URL in the browser, checking for the existence of the cookie will return TRUE, although the visitor arrived to the site directly.   Hi! all I am designing an application for streaming video.I have developed a model in which a server wait for incoming request.The server it self is serving to a good number of clients and it can't afford to serve any more clients.Now when the new connection comes,the server chooses from among it's clients a candidate client who will serve the request of the incoming client.Now the thing is that this choice should be very intelligent.Now I am using various heuristic like bandwidth of the selected client,it's location,distance from the requesting client to come at a decision.Now my question is,IS THERE AVAILABLE ANY TOOL TO FIND OUT BANDWIDTH,LOCATION of a host,and DISTANCE(my be in hop number)?for hop number I can use traceroute but that will be too expensive as it take long time sending reply from every intermediate router. • Rails -- Cant set value for date_select in form

  I'm pulling data from an API where the date data comes in as "2008-02-11 00:00:00 " I would like that data to go into my form within the date_select as a value so I can view it correctly before I add it into my database. The view looks like <%= f.label :start_date %><br /> <%= f.date_select :start_date, :value => " #{@stdate[idx]} " %> The object is actually an array of dates since I'm doing this action several times do thats why the [idx] is there; serving as an index. <%= @stdate[idx] % ends up outputting "2008-02-11 00:00:00 " but the fields for the date_select helper only outputs the current date "2010" "June" "5" in those dropdown date selects fields... Do I need to set the values of the Year, Month, and Date Individually? I have Chronic and tried to parse the object before using it as a value for the date_select and that didnt work either. Any ideas?

  Hello, I have my J2EE application deployed into a JBossAS. My Application has to respond to two different hostnames (https://foo.com/myApp and https://bar.com/myApp). It is the same instance of the app serving those two hostnames. But I don't know how to configure the keystores. I need different keystores for each hostname. Is there a way to tie a virtual host in JBoss' server.xml to a specific connector? Or do I have to use two different IP-addresses and create a connector for each? A solution that does not require a second IP-address would be greatly appreciated.

Our Web Server is a windows 2008 server and we have a site (images.mysite.com) that points to a shared drive on a unix box. The code used to do the uploading is C# 3.5. The system currently supports a workflow where after a threshold is met a new subfolder can be generated. The question we have is how many files and/or subfolders can you have in a single folder before there is a degredation in performance - in serving the images up through IIS 7 and reading/writing through code?

  I'm loading an external .php file using: <script type="text/javascript" src="myfile.js.php"></script> Within the external myfile.js.php file, I'm using: <?php header('content-type: text/javascript'); $message = "Test message"; ?> document.write('<?php echo $message; ?>'); Everything works fine until I change the name of myfile.js.php to just myfile.php Why does it stop working if I remove the .js part from the file name? I'm serving the file as text/javascript, plus shouldn't the .js part be ignored since .php is the actual file extension? Does anyone know why? Thanks!

  I'm working on a python based server product where a user can install WSGI-based python apps on their server. I can enforce any restriction on the application structure or format to make this easy. The user workflow would be: browse an app market, showing a list of WSGIpython apps select an app and choose "install" the app would be downloaded from a remote server to the user's server the http server would then have to be configured to start serving that application from the app's id, ex. a blog app with an id of "blog" at "/blog/", so all requests below /blog/ would be seen as root by the blog application.   Hi, I would like to develop a web application in java/spring/hibernate serving as a business platform that I could connect plugins to (i.e. CRM plugin, ware plugin, sales plugin). Those plugins could be dependent of other plugins in a tree manner. The parent project would be packaged as war having all the basic configuration and looks (spring configs, css, scripts), ready to go user and group management, security settings, etc. All together I would like it to behave and look a bit like Joomla, but built using different tools for different purposes. And I have a few questions concerning that project: Do you know of any open source projects offering such a platform ready to go? If not is maven applicable for managing those plugins? What is the best way to package and deploy those plugins? And the last but not least, basically is this the right way to go or is a dead end and it would be better to create a separate web app for those business needs?

• Apache/PHP is determined to serve the wrong file

  I have a page that is called with a url like http://testserver/path/to/foo/bar/ but apache is serving the wrong file altogether. /path/to/ is a real directory where all the code and .htaccess file is. foo/bar/ is supposed to redirect to foo_bar.php with a RewriteRule, but it never gets there. It's not a mod_rewrite issue as I have commented out all the rules that could be interfering, which should give me 404s for that request, but the same problem occurs: the file that is served is /path/to/foo.php, so in it I var_dump $_SERVER and get: REQUEST_URI = /path/to/foo/bar/ SCRIPT_NAME = /path/to/foo.php SCRIPT_FILENAME = /real/path/to/foo.php PATH_INFO = /bar/ PATH_TRANSLATED = /real/bar/ PHP_SELF = /path/to/foo.php/bar/ Why is this request being routed to this file at all?

  I am looking for a best practice while uploading images to amazon s3 server and serving from there. We need four different sizes of an image. So just after image upload we convert the image and scale in 4 different widths and heights. Instead of sending images immediately to S3, it may be better to add them to a job queue. But the user should see the uploaded image immediately.

As excepted the _db object gets disposed after the first call and because of the singleton behavior any other call of _db will crash. • django/apache permissions problem

  I'm running a django project on Centos 5.4 and serving it with httpd/mod_wsgi. I can't figure out the correct permissions for /home/website/django_project so that I don't get a 403 error. In my httpd.conf the user and group to run httpd as is apache. The group django is set up with website and apache as members. The owner of /home/website and all subdirs is website:django, and the permissions are rwxrwx---. Right now the project works fine with the dev server, but if I try to view it through apache, I get a 403 error. chmod -R o+rx /home/website/django_project fixes the problem, but this obviously isn't a good solution. • minifying patched javascript files

  I'm writing a Rails app and I've partially integrated in this nice little patch to the in line ajax editor: http://inplacericheditor.box.re/ The problem is, on that page I have tinymce, prototype and scriptaculous included. In Firefox at least there's a big lag when all this stuff is loading. I was hoping to fix it by compressing the files so I checked out a plugin for rails called Smurf. It seemed to do what it was supposed to do nicely, but it choked on the little patch files that are included with the Ajax editor thing. THe patch files look like this: Object.extend(Ajax.InPlaceEditor.prototype, { handleAJAXFailure: function(transport) Alternatively, should I just be catching them instead of worrying about minfying them? I know I'm running on development and that Apache would maybe be handling serving the js files differently..It just seems like a lot of things to serve on one page.

• Why do we need Web-Api? [closed]

  I was just wondering what the deal is with Asp.net Web-Api. Why did we need a separate type of controller in order to facilitate varying content types for action results? Why wasn't this capability just baked into the ASP.Net MVC base controller? Anyway, I was just wondering if there was a compelling reason to use both types of controllers within the same project, assuming that the project was being freshly created, or if this project structure was due to an inherent technical limitation. Would it be possible to have ApiControllers fulfill the purpose of an MVC Controller in all cases by just serving HTML when that is the specified accept type? It just seems to me like a lot of unnecessary repetition to have to re-implement the same types of actions using both types of controllers if you want those actions to be available to your web application through the API and through the web interface.

• Would popup blockers stop a URL which pops up only when the user clicked on something?

  I'm currently building a web application that can can track a users actions on a particular website and pop a URL if the user takes certain actions, such as: first click, responding to a question by clicking yes / no, clicking a submit button, or exiting the site. It is important that these URLs are served to the user and are not blocked by pop-up blockers. It is my understanding that there are certain exceptions within the major internet browsers that allow pop-ups if they are served based on some user action, rather than serving an unsolicited pop? Is this true? How do I design this web application so that it can serve these pops (and not have them blocked).
