  Was looking through the web for an answer but it seems like there is no clear recipe for it. What I need is a signed angle of rotation between two vectors Va and Vb lying within the same 3D plane and having the same origin knowing that: the plane contatining both vectors is an arbitrary and is not parallel to XY or any other of cardinal planes Vn - is a plane normal both vectors along with the normal have the same origin O = { 0, 0, 0 } Va - is a reference for measuring the left handed rotation at Vn The angle should be measured in such a way so if the plane would be XY plane the Va would stand for X axis unit vector of it. I guess I should perform a kind of coordinate space transformation by using the Va as the X-axis and the cross product of Vb and Vn as the Y-axis and then just using some 2d method like with atan2() or something. Any ideas? Formulas?

• Combining a web application with another (larger).

  I'm writing a web app, initially meant to be stand-alone--it's essentially a survey with user-management/authentication built on Codeigniter. The company I'm doing this for wants to merge it with their main system so that it acts like a feature, or a sub-app of their website. What is the best thing for me to do? I think I could do one of two things: Finish my application, as I had planned to initially, and let them handle the merging.It would probably save me a headache. Stop where I am in development, and migrate my authentication system to theirs, migrate the payment system to use theirs, and then finish the app. In your opinion, or experience, what is the best thing to do?

• how to deal with a static analyzer output

  We have started using a static analyzer (Coverity) on our code base. We were promptly stupefied by the sheer amount of warnings we received (its in the hundreds of thousands) , it will take the entire team a few mounts to clear them all (obliviously impossible). the options we discussed so far are 1) hire a contractor to sort out the warning and fix them - he drawback: we will probably need very experiences people to do all these modifications, and no contractor will have required understanding of the code. 2) filter out the warning and deal only with the dangerous ones - the problem here is that our static analysis output will always be cluttered by warning making it difficult for us to isolate problems. also the filtering of the warning is also a major effort. either way, bringing our code to a state when the static analyzer can be a useful tool for us seems a monumental task. so how is it possible to work with the static analyzer without braining current development efforts into a complete stand still?

I have some experience with Java and Visual Basic .NET but I honestly would like to know what the best would be for developing stand-alone applications in a workstation (local) environment. The book makes the following comment: Previous editions of this book tackled web services, a feature that allows you to create code routines that can be called by other applications over the Internet.Web services are more interesting when considering rich client development (because they allow you to give web features to ordinary desktop applications),and they’re in the process of being replaced by a new technology known as WCF (Windows Communication Foundation). For those reasons, web services aren’t covered in this book.However,if you want to branch out and explore the web service world,you can download the web service chapters from the previous edition of this book from the book’s download page.The information in these chapters still applies to ASP.NET 3.5,because the web service feature hasn’t changed. Can someone offer, in "layman's terms" what exactly a web service is and if, indeed, they are being replaced, at least in .Net, with WCF? What would be a practical example of a web service? Are they stand alone programs that run on a web server and are invoked by a client or clients?

  I'm using ADO.Net's ExecuteNonQuery to call a stored procedure, works like a charm stand-alone but when implementing it where it should be called I'm running into problems concerning transactions. For example System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Transaction count after EXECUTE indicates a mismatching number of BEGIN and COMMIT statements. Previous count = 1, current count = 0. and also a timeout right after that. I've just found out the method which calls the stored procedure is marked with the following WCF attribute: [OperationBehavior(TransactionScopeRequired = true, TransactionAutoComplete = true)] How will this influence the call my stored procedure? How can I tell .Net to execute the stored procedure outside this transaction? The stored procedure contains insert statements and also a transaction, but removing them doesn't change the behavior...

  I've been asked to create a stand-alone webapp using "straight" HTML and Javascript that does user authentication against an existing PHP app (backend is MySQL). Unfortunately, I really don't have a firm grasp on how PHP authentication works, and I'd rather not invest a lot of time in learning PHP just for this particular case. I can see two possibilites so far 1) create a PHP wrapper around my new app and use native PHP authentication (don't like this) 2) create a simple REST-ful webservice around the PHP authentication (don't know how to do this) Anything else I should consider? • ActiveX doesn't show up in Browser

  Hi, i'm trying to put an activeX object on an asp-webpage. it already worked good a week ago, but now the object isn't showing up anymore. already made a little asp testing-project....just an asp-page and a activex control, containing a button and a label. but when i call up the page in the browser, there is only a white area with a little icon in the upper left corner, showing a red dot, a green triangle and a blue rectangle.... what does that mean? object not found? object blocked by IE? or what exactly does this icon stand for? i always thoght that an missing object is represented by an empty area with a little red cross in it. =/

• spring or jetty.xml?

  I have a spring web application (currently packaged as a war file) which I would like to be able to launch from jetty in a stand-alone configuration (small scale all-in-one deployment, and for launching in the development environment). Since I am already using spring, it seems like what I want to do is create my jetty Server and WebContext objects, and initial JNDI context using spring. However this seems to overlap with the jetty.xml method of configuring the same environment. Is one approach better? Is the does jetty.xml offer anything easier than I can get using spring?

  Hello! Not a programmer, I begin with xml, html forms and xslt on Mac. I plan to use a form to post short texts in a xhtml page and invite end users to add some annotations to the said text. The users would select a specific part of the text posted and each annotation would stand for one specific chain of characters. My goal is to consolidate the tags obtained from various user's annotations to one xml "knowledge base" containing the original text with all the revision indicators. Then I plan to use xslt sheets to product various reports based on the tags obtained. my two questions are : 1- am I dreaming ? Is it really possible to do that with xml, xforms, xslt without using java, php, ajax or other seasoned programmer's tools ? 2- What should be my focus for further explorations aiming in that direction ?   Hi, I am working to develop a JMS application(stand alone multithreaded java application) which can receive 100 messages at a time , they need to be processed and database procedures need to be called for inserting/updating data. Procedures are very heavy as validations are also performed in them. Each procedure is taking about 30 to 50 seconds of time to execute and they are capable to run concurrently. My concern is to execute 100 procedures for all 100 messages and also send reply within time limit of 90 seconds by jms application. No application server to be used(requirement) and database is Teradata (RDBMS) I am using connection pool and thread pool in java code and testing code with 90 connections. Question is : (1) What should be the limit on number of connections with database at a time? (2) How many threads at a time are recommended? Thanks, Jyoti

• How does one SELECT block another?

  I'm looking at output of SP_WhoIsActive on SQL Server 2005, and it's telling me one session is blocking another - fine. However they both are running a SELECT. How does one SELECT block another? Shouldn't they both be acquiring shared locks (which are compatible with one another)? Some more details: Neither session has an open transaction count - so they are stand-alone. The queries join a view with a table. They are complex queries which join lots of tables and results in 10,000 or so reads. Any insight much appreciated.

• How can I write a null ASCII character (nul) to a file with a Windows batch script?

  I'm attempting to write an ASCII null character (nul) to a file from a Windows batch script without success. I initially tried using echo like this: echo <Alt+2+5+6> which seems like it should work (typing <Alt+2+5+6> in the command window does write a null character - or ^@ as it appears), but echo then outputs: More? and hangs until I press <Return>. As an alternative I tried using: copy con tmp.txt >nul <Alt+2+5+6><Ctrl+Z> which does exactly what I need, but only if I type it manually in the command window. If I run it from a batch file it hangs until I press <Ctrl+Z> but even then the output file is created but remains empty. I really want the batch file to stand alone without requiring (for example) a separate file containing a null character which can be copied when needed.

  I'm looking in to Magento's filtering options (Ecommerce System and PHP Framekwork with an expansive ORM system). Specifically the addFieldToFilter method. In this method, you specify a SQLish filter by passing in a single element array, with the key indicating the type of filter. For example, array('eq'=>'bar') //eq means equal array('neq'=>'bar') //neq means not equal would each give you a where clause that looks like where field = 'bar'; where field != 'bar'; So, deep in the bowels of the source, I found a comparison type named 'moreq' that maps to a = comparison operator array('moreq'=>'27') where field >= 27 The weird thing is, there's already a 'gteq' comparision type array('gteq'=>'27') where field >= 27 So, my question is, what does moreq stand for? Is is some special SQL concept that's supported in other databases that the Magento guys wants to map to MySQL, or is it just "more required" and an example what happens when you're doing rapid agile and trying to maintain backwards compatibility.

  Hello, I am attempting to engineer a collision detection algorithm for a custom Minecraft client I'm making. Basically, the entire world is made up of cubes, and the player (or camera) needs to be able to stand on and move against these cubes. The result I want is illustrated in this image: The green line is the player's movement vector. When the player is brushing up against a plane of one of the cubes, I want the vector to change to one that is perpendicular with the plane. The vector should, however, keep all of it's velocity in the plane's direction, yet lose all velocity towards the plane. I hope I've made my question clear. What is the best and most efficient way to implement a collision detection system like this? Also, will a system like this allow for a simple gravity component?

The code is an SDL based OpenGL particle engine affair, nothing too complex.   Hi, i have the following situation, i have a Reporting layer(stand alone) in asp.net application(NOT website, this means NO App_Code folder exists), and i want just to create Object Data Source to take an Object in a separate layer(lets say from Data Access Layer), and then to use that Object Data Source to create a report, i have spent my whole day working around that, tons of work around's and articles on the web, but does not mention what i really want to do, any answer is appriciated... just to make things more clear here, assume the following: i have a solution with the follwoing layers, UI Reporting(has NO Employees object) just a reference Business Logic Data Access Layer(Employees--GetEmployees(), all i need is as mentioned above, i want to create Object Data Source from Reporting layer, to take Employee object from DAL, and then use it's GetEmployees method to be added to report, i think its more clear now, since also Reporting layer has NO App_Code folder.

• JQuery Accordion - bottom-up in stead of top-down

  Hi there, I have a question about the accordion plugin for jQuery. Basically, I've got it to work on my site nicely, there's just one thing that I'd have liked it to do and that is bottom-up opening in stead of top-down. What I mean by that is that my 3 buttons just stand in the vertical menu (div) in the bottom. And when you click it, they'll slide open but upwards, not downwards. Is there a way to achieve this easily? I've gone through the documentation, but can't find any native support for it, so I was wondering if it was possible to do it in the javascript of the plugin itself. Thanks in advance.

• SSIS - Connection Management Within a Loop

  Hi I have the following SSIS package: The problem is that within the Foreach loop a connection is opened and closed for each iteration. On running SQL Profiler I see a series of: Audit Login RPC:Completed Audit Lout The duration for the login and the RPC that actually does the work is minimal. However, the duration for the logout is significant, running into several seconds each. This causes the JOB to run very slowly - taking many hours. I get the same problem when running either on a test server or stand-alone laptop. Could anyone please suggest how I may change the package to improve performance? Also, I have noticed that when running the package from Visual Studio, it looks as though it continues to run with the component blocks going amber then green but actually all the processing has been completed and SQL profiler has dropped silent? • How do I deploy a utility with ocx dependency to a test machine without registering the ocx?

  I have a test utility that depends upon an ocx file that is installed/registered on my development machine. We'd like to run this tool on a test machine without polluting the machine with any unnecessary files. Nothing should be installed except the target machine software. Running the tool on a network drive or from a stand-alone directory copied to the test machine would be ideal. But, registering the ocx on the test machine is out of the question. Placing the ocx file in the same directory as the exe doesn't work. No matter what it still gives me this error--"The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem." What else can I try?

  So I have a combobox - the designer code: this.cmbStatusBox.Items.AddRange(new object[] { "Ordered", "Cooking", "In-transit", "Delivered"}); The formload code: if (mainForm.boolEdit == true) { this.cmbStatusBox.Items.AddRange(new object[] { "Cooking", "In-transit", "Delivered"}); } else { this.cmbStatusBox.Items.AddRange(new object[] { "Ordered"}); } As you can see, I am trying to make the combobox have different values. As things stand, i get both whats in the designer and in formload in the comboboxes. How can i stop this? I also have an edit function, so when i edit a record, i want the combo box to be populated by what is already saved. Just a random question, can you stop the user entering a value that isn't in the combo box? Thankyou
