• Monitor Processes' Memory Usage

  We have an IBM P series box running AIX 5.3. This is our application server, whereby our J2EE application is running in Oracle's Applications Server (version 10g r2). At around 11pm till the next day 7am, we have shell scripts running, which executes Java class programs. Recently, this server has been experiencing some high memory usage, which caused some of the Java class programs throwing "Out of memory" exception . We normally use NMON to monitor the server's resources, such as CPU, I/O, memory, etc. But because of this OOM issue, we would like to know throughout the day, what are the processes which are running and how much memory each process consumed. NMON is not able to show this. Even with the "-T" parameter, it only shows the top processes and not all. Is there any thing we can use to monitor all the processes' memory?

• Suggestions for a SOHO/Home Asterisk system

  I would like to buy a small embedded system that runs Linux and Asterisk. I would like two FXS ports ( to plug analogue phones into ) and one FXO port ( to plug in to my real line to allow access to the POTS ). I would like it to have a USB port to hold storage for voicemail. I really want it for home use so I would like it to be under £150 ( say $250 ), given that you can buy ADSL routers for around this much can any of them be made to run Linux and Asterisk? I don't want a PC as the power usage would be too high. I am looking for something like this ASDL router but open and able to run Asterisk or another open PBX. At worst I would like a box which had one FXO and two FXS and just made them completely available over IP to a full Asterisk system on a low power Atom system.

  I would like to install a Test/Dummy SMTP server on a Windows 2008 server (virtual box). I just want to test my web application on the machine it self so I don't need the mails to go out on the internet, but just to be written to disk (so that I can verify that the mail function was indeed called and the correct data was handed over to SMTP) Can you recommend some tool. I guess starting your own SMTP server in python is an option. I am looking for a simple (ready to use) solution, targeted for tests systems. I will need to integrate it to automated tests (Selenium) at a later stage. Thanks

  How can I find out if mod_security is installed on my apache server? I would also like to learn its version. I'm having some upload issues and I tried to disable mod_security using .htaccess. But that started producing 500 internal server errors. I read somewhere that depending on my mod_security version I might not be able to disable it using .htaccess. So I would like to understand if I have mod_security installed and what version it is. I'm on a centos 5 box. Thanks! • Monitoring Dell/HP Servers Running ESXi (Free)

  What are you all doing to monitor ESXi servers that run the free edition? With the lack of SNMP support, it seems fairly limited to me. What'd I'd like to be able to do is get some type of alert when a drive or other hardware fails. I've seen a few articles on getting OpenManage installed on an ESXi box (to rebuild an array), but it seems to be quite a pain as well. Even if I get OpenManage working, I won't have alerts without SNMP. Any comments, input, or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

  I'm trying to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server on VirtualBox. I know this is duplicated question, however another questions have no fine answer. I'm trying to install on VirtualBox on iMac. So this is pretty legal. But the problem is I want to install with DMG image. Because installing DVD drive is too slow, and I have to install Mac OS X many times. And taking DVD disc from box is annoying too. But VirtualBox fails installing. It couldn't load kernel. It installs well with DVDs. Is there any way to do this? I'm considering using other VM solutions like Parallels or VMWare if they can support install from DMG images well. If you know about them certainly, please let me know.

• I used "autoconf6" (used to configure IPV6) on an AIX 6 target and I don't know how to change it back.

  So I got curious and ran autoconf6 and now I can't figure out how to undo the changes that were made. I have tried using smitty to modify the en0 interface but have had no luck getting it back to it's old configuration. • Why would a FaceBook application "work" on a profile, but not a page?

  I made a FaceBook application that works fine on profiles, but I can't figure out how to get it to show on a FaceBook page. For example, after I visit the application canvas URL, allow the application, then edit application settings and "add" to box and tab view... I cannot click the "plus" symbol to the left of the tabs in order to add a tab for the application. It does not appear in the list of available applications. Meanwhile, the application is working/showing up on profiles with no issues. I DID check the "Installable to Pages" checkbox on the application (authentication tab) settings. What could cause this? • FreeNas running on ESXi - sometimes gets very slugish.

  Hello everyone, I have a ESXi server (dual quad core, 8GB of DDR3 ram, 6x 1TB WD Blacks running in RAid 5 on the PErc 6/i controller. I have a 64bit freenas VM running, on this VM I keep about 200Gigs of stuff that my windows machines access. every now and then the throughput of this VM just dies, for example right now it can't even handle streaming a song and when I tried to transfer a folder the speed goes from 10-400KB/s. Might I add at this point that the ESXi box has dual gigabit network cards plugged into a good solid gigabit switch and other linux and windows VM's are just fine I have seen speeds over 90MB/s (frequently) The server still has ram left over (plenty actually) and cpu is very low (500-1000mhz) any ideas what could cause this? thanks. • Ubuntu VPN Server (PPTPD) Configuration - Pass Traffic to Internet

  I am trying to configure PPTPD on my Ubuntu box to pass all VPN traffic through to it's internet connection, so I essentially want it to work like a Proxy. I think the problem is that no default gateway is being assigned to my PPTP client (Windows 7). I can connect to the VPN fine, I get an IP address and DNS servers but no default gateway. Do I need to configure a specific option to tell the VPN server to forward all traffic it receives down it's eth0 port and out to the internet. Thanks!

• sox mix nested scripts on amazon ec2 rhel linux

  I'm trying to use "sox" to mix some audio files. The command works great on my Mac terminal sox -m audio.wav "| sox upload.wav -p trim 2 1 pad 6" final.wav This mixes (not concatenate) audio.wav and a section of upload.wav from the 2nd second to the 3rd second and adds 6 seconds of padding in the front, and outputs to final.wav Now the problem is, the SAME EXACT command does NOT work my Amazon EC2 RHEL box. (sox is installed correctly). I get the following error sox soxio: Can't open input file `| sox upload.wav -p trim 2 2 pad 6': No such file or directory For some reason RedHat doesn't like the double quotes. Even though it is documented to be used this way. Thanks for your help!

• Why's SMC failing on startup?

  Trying to remove a user from one of our servers, but I seem to be thwarted at every turn... SMC refuses to load the user list (failing with a NoClassDefFoundError in the listAll method of UserContent). vipw just returns with "vipw: /etc/passwd file busy". I'm the only user on the system at the moment (it's our backup SRSS box), and both of these fail even right after a reboot. I don't have console access at the moment either unfortunately (or I would try single user mode). Of course, even if init mode S worked and let me do this one task, it doesn't solve the root problem. Ideas?

• Tunneling HTTP traffic from a particular host/port

  Hello, I'm trying to figure out how to access from my development machine (Devel) to a third party web service (www.domain.com) which I am not allowed to directly contact using my office IP address. So in order to access the web service I have to ssh into A, and then from A to B to access www.domain.com Is there any way of tunneling traffic from B to A and then back to my development machine so I can directly access www.domain.com without having to ssh into every box? Devel: My development machine. A, B: Linux servers. I own root access on both. B: Production server www.domain.com: Third party HTTP API production server uses.

  I'm trying to install a driver for a USB DAQ box, which annoyingly, I have to compile myself. • Simplest way to expose UNIX mailboxes via IMAP or POP3 on RHEL 5.6

  We've got a web server running RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.6, and it has all the usual local UNIX mailboxes. As is typical, the root mailbox gets all the cron output, logwatch results, etc. I'd like an easier way to keep an eye on this mailbox besides running mail via ssh. What should I install/enable to allow access to these system mailboxes via IMAP or POP3 with minimal fuss? Either protocol would be fine for what I'm doing, as I could then add it as an account in Outlook. A bit of searching led me to cyrus-imapd and dovecot, but it seems like they are meant for more serious mail hosting operations. Either they use their own mailbox system exclusively, or don't have a simple way of making the UNIX mailboxes available. If I'm wrong about that, then I'm fine with using either of them as long as I can get to the mailboxes of the existing accounts on the box.

• How do I configure pfsense as an outbound VPN client?

  We use pfsense as a router/firewall. Because we're based in China, it is useful for us to have VPN access for all our internal clients. Instead of each individual client connecting to a VPN server stateside, I'd like to configure pfsense as a VPN client and have all the network traffic be routed through it. Most of the posts I've seen regarding pfsense and VPN are concerning connecting to the LAN from outside; this is not what I want to do. Another option would be for an SSH tunnel to be initiated on the pfsense box with the LAN traffic routed through it. How do I configure pfsense to be able to do either of these? One huge caveat is that OpenVPN cannot be used. The solution I am looking for needs to use one of the other VPN protocols.

• After updating debian lenny, ps stops recognising my users

  Since upgrading my debian lenny box with apt-get, ps seems to be behaving strangely, and also if i run top i see under the user column the ids, not the names. whoami => foo ps -U foo => ERROR: User name does not exist. However, when ever I move a window, the redraw of that window takes 3-8 seconds. Even moving the window takes the same amount of time Is this being done in software rather than the nVidea hardware? The windows themselves do not respond. I have seen a few old threads but no relevant fixes - If anyone could suggest a fix I would very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance

• First time setting up a MySQL database.

  In trying to learn how to work with the LAMP stack, I've hit a wall with MySQL. I can't seem to find a good reference for the first time setup of MySQL to be used with Apache and python. So, my question is four-fold: 1) Under what circumstances should I create my first database. That is, what user do I use (Apache's http user? root?) 2)How do permissions work? 3) Do I have to do anything on the MySQL side to make MySQL talk to Apache, or MySQL to talk to Python/Django? 4) Is there a good resource online that describes setting all of this up? I've found a bunch for using a database once it's in place, but none for the initial setup? Notes: I'm trying to run my LAMP stack on a dedicated little box for testing/learning purposes only, so I don't have access to any DBA that could help me, as much as I'd like one.

  I have a client, who against my better judgement has insisted on doing the following. They have a single IIS 6 on Win 2003 Server Enterprise. It currently runs ColdFusion 8. They want me to install ColdFusion 9 on the server without changing any of the existing sites so that they can develop in CF 9 and upgrade other sites in the future. Yes, I have begged them to use a Dev server, or run on apache on the same box. Can this even be done? Many thanks in advance! DM

• Adding a second IP address for IIS - static vs dynamic A records

  I'm looking to add a second IP address to IIS so that I can run two sites with different SSL certificates. When I added one on my play box and ran ipconfig /registerdns both addresses were registered in DNS with the server's name. So, I deleted the A record for the new IP address and rebooted. That also registered both names. So, then I went into the network config for the adapter and, on the DNS tab, unchecked "Register this connection's addresses in DNS". I deleted the A record for the new IP address again and re-ran ipconfig /registerdns. This time, it deleted the A record for the old IP address and didn't created one for the new address. Neither of these is what I want: I want the main IP address to be registered and refreshed automatically as a dynamic DNS record and the second IP address to be registered and managed as a static address. Is there any way to achieve this?

• EC2 server in VPC stops responding joining domain

  We have a EC2 Windows Server set up and running in our VPC, connected to our network via a Juniper 5GT. This is working well, with the tunnel up and stable. If I then join the server to our local domain, it appears to work - I can then log on using domain credentials, and use domain accounts when applying security to folders etc. After I log out, if I give it around an hour, the box becomes unresponsive. I can't ping it, although a tracert goes all the way barring the last hop - so the tunnel is ok. I can't RDP into it. If I reboot it, then it works for a while before doing the same thing. Un-joining it from the domain fixes the problem, and it stays up and stable. The event logs don't show anything obvious, at least to me. Any ideas?
