• Trying to open a excel template and rename or save to new location

  I get the following error message when I try the following: Dim XL As New Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application XL.Visible = True XL.Workbooks.Open(XLTemplatePath) XL.SaveWorkspace(XLSaveReportPath) XL.Workbooks.Close() XL.Workbooks.Open(XLSaveReportPath) "Excel cannot open the file 'ContactReports.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file." What I would like to do is Open a excel file that is the XLTemplatePath and the either rename or save the file at the XLSaveReportPath and then use that renamed/saved file to fill the report out. I am using Visual Studio 2008 in VB.NET

  I need a way to take a resultset of KeyIDs and divide it up as equally as possible and update records differently for each division based on the KeyIDs. In other words, there is SELECT KeyID FROM TableA WHERE (some criteria exists) I want to update TableA 3 different ways by 3 equal portions of KeyIDs. UPDATE TableA SET FieldA = Value1 WHERE KeyID IN (the first 1/3 of the SELECT resultset above) UPDATE TableA SET FieldA = Value2 WHERE KeyID IN (the second 1/3 of the SELECT resultset above) UPDATE TableA SET FieldA = Value3 WHERE KeyID IN (the third 1/3 of the SELECT resultset above) or something to that effect. • Syncing SQL Server 2008 Databases over HTTP using WCF & Sync Framework

  I've tried to get a solution for the above said question from MSDN Social and other resources from Microsoft. I was specifically looking for offline scenarios where client come online only to fetch updates from the Server. There are plenty of articles on Sync covering Sql CE but MSFT team seems to be ignoring questions from the community on Syncing with Sql Express clients. There is no standard provider for Sql Express client yet, and Sql 2008 change tracking is not supported in the latest release too. Since Sql Replication is an expensive alternative, I have to go with Sync Framework. Have anyone here in SO worked with Sync Framework, syncing through WCF endpoints? Please share code samples or sample projects.

• Which reporting tool would you recommend?

  Hi, I have some reporting functionality in my app and I want to improve it a bit. Its only SQL in a XML file which is read by some parser. There can be some params for that SQL and when its parsed and the params are injected, it is executed against my DB (SQL Server). I want to improve that a bit so that the results look better and are more flexible. This are the most important points I need to have: subtotals layout that can change dynamically according to settings in DB (like logo, slogan) possibility to use the same report template for several customers (same fields, but different logos,colors, slogans etc.) should run from an ASP.NET application It should be as dynamic as possible. I know of Crystal Reports and the Microsoft Reporting Tool. Are there any others that might be of interest and are my above points possible at all? Thanks for some ideas and hints :-)...

  In software companies I have seen it's really hard to work on very large products where everything depends on everything else. For instance Microsoft works on C#, F#, .NET, WPF, Visual Studio where these things are interconnected. I don't know how many people are involved, but if it's in 100s, how do they keep in sync with everything, so they design and implement features without conflicting with other dependencies and future plans of other products? I am wondering that if MS is able to do this, they must have a very good system. Any guidelines or secrets for MS or non-MS very large software product delivering?

  So far I have written two articles on Columnstore Indexes, and both of them got very interesting readership. In fact, just recently I got a query on my previous article on Columnstore Index. Read the following two articles to get familiar with the Columnstore Index. They will give you a reference to the question which was asked by a certain reader: SQL SERVER – Fundamentals of Columnstore Index SQL SERVER – How to Ignore Columnstore Index Usage in Query Here is the reader’s question: ” When I tried to update my table after creating the Columnstore index, it gives me an error. What should I do?” When the Columnstore index is created on the table, the table becomes Read-Only table and it does not let any insert/update/delete on the table. The basic understanding is that Columnstore Index will be created on the table that is very huge and holds lots of data. If a table is small enough, there is no need to create a Columnstore index. The regular index should just help it. The reason why Columnstore index was needed is because the table was so big that retrieving the data was taking a really, really long time. Now, updating such a huge table is always a challenge by itself. If the Columnstore Index is created on the table, and the table needs to be updated, you need to know that there are various ways to update it. The easiest way is to disable the Index and enable it. • UAC being turned off once a day on Windows 7

  I have strange problem on my HP laptop. This began to happen recently. Whenever I start my machine, Windows 7 Action Center displays the following warning: You need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off. Actually, this does not happen if it happened once on a specific day. For example, when I start the machine in the morning, it shows up; but it never shows up in the subsequent restarts within that day. On the next day, the same thing happens again. I never disable UAC, but obviously some rootkit or virus causes this. As soon as I get this warning, I head for the UAC settings, and re-enable UAC to dismiss this warning. This is a bothersome situation as I can't fix it. First, I have run a full scan on the computer for any probable virus and malware/rootkit activity, but TrendMicro OfficeScan said that no viruses have been found. I went to an old Restore Point using Windows System Restore, but the problem was not solved. 8204 bytes As suggested in this very similar question, I have run full scans (+boot time scans) with RegRun and UnHackMe, but they also did not find anything. I have carefully examined all entries in the Event Viewer, but there's nothing wrong. Now I know that there is a hidden trojan (rootkit) on my machine which seems to disguise itself quite successfully. Note that I don't have the chance to remove the HDD, or reinstall the OS as this is a work machine subjected to certain IT policies on a company domain. Despite all my attempts, the problem still remains. I strictly need a to-the-point method or a pukka rootkit remover to remove whatever it is. I don't want to monkey with the system settings, i.e. disabling auto runs one by one, messing the registry, etc. EDIT 2: I have found an article which is closely related to my trouble: Malware can turn off UAC in Windows 7; “By design” says Microsoft. • HP and Microsoft: That&rsquo;s What Friends Are For ?

  Today, HP pre-announced the second coming out for its recently acquired Palm webOS mobile operating system.  I happen to think webOS is quite good, and when the Palm Pre first came out, I thought it a worthwhile phone.  I was worried though that the platform would never attract the developer mindshare it needed to be competitive, and that turned out to be the case.  But then HP acquired Palm and announced it would be revamping the webOS offering, not only on phones, but also on tablets.  It later announced that it would also use webOS as an embedded solution on HP printers. The timing of this came shortly after HP had announced it would be producing a “Slate” product running Windows 7. After the Palm deal, HP became vague about whether the Windows-powered slate would actually come out.  They did, in fact, bring the Slate 500 to market, but by some accounts, they only built 5000 units. Another recent awkward moment between HP and Microsoft: HP withdrew itself from the Windows Home Server ecosystem.  That one hurt, as they were the dominant OEM there.  But Microsoft’s decision to kill Drive Extender had driven away many parties, not just HP. On Wednesday, HP came out with their TouchPad, and new phone models.  Not a nice thing for Windows Phone 7, but other OEMs are taking a wait and see attitude there too, I suppose.  There was one more zinger though, and it was bigger: HP announced they’d be porting webOS to PCs. No Windows Phone 7? OK. No Windows Home Server?  Whatcha gonna do?  But no Windows 7 either?  From HP?  What comes after that, no ink and toner? Some people think Microsoft’s been around too long to be relevant.  But HP started out making oscilloscopes!  The notion that HP is too cool for Windows school is a it far-fetched.  This is the company that bought EDS. This is the company that bought Compaq.  And Compaq was the company that bought Digital Equipment Corporation.  Somehow, I don’t think the VT 220 outclasses Windows PCs. What could possibly be going on?  My sense is that HP wants to put webOS on PCs that also have Windows, and that people will buy because they have Windows.  And for every one of those sold, HP gets to count, technically speaking, another webOS unit in the install base.  webOS is really nice, as I said.  But being good isn’t good enough when you are trying to get market share.  Number of units shipped matters.  The question is whether counting PCs with webOS installed, but dormant, is helpful to HP’s cause.  Seems like a funny way to account for market share, and a strange way to treat a big partner in Redmond.

• Visual Studio 2010 is asking to convert RDLC created on VS2008 to RDLC 2008 format?

  I've created my project on Visual Studio 2008, as well RDLC files on it. But now, when I open the solution on Visual Studio 2010 and want to open RDLC file, it's showing me a warning. That's a little funny. The report was created on VS2008 and VS2010 is asking to convert to 2008 format. Perhaps there was a problem on my VS2008 installation that created RDLC files using some ancient format (2005??!) • What is the difference between System.Speech.Recognition and Microsoft.Speech.Recognition?

  There are two similar namespaces and assemblies for speech recognition in .NET. I’m trying to understand the differences and when it is appropriate to use one or the other. There is System.Speech.Recognition from the assembly System.Speech (in System.Speech.dll). System.Speech.dll is a core DLL in the .NET Framework class library 3.0 and later There is also Microsoft.Speech.Recognition from the assembly Microsoft.Speech (in microsoft.speech.dll). Microsoft.Speech.dll is part of the UCMA 2.0 SDK I find the docs confusing and I have the following questions: System.Speech.Recognition says it is for "The Windows Desktop Speech Technology", does this mean it cannot be used on a server OS or cannot be used for high scale applications? The UCMA 2.0 Speech SDK ( http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd266409%28v=office.13%29.aspx ) says that it requires Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 as a prerequisite. However, I’ve been told at conferences and meetings that if I do not require OCS features like presence and workflow I can use the UCMA 2.0 Speech API without OCS. Is this true? If I’m building a simple recognition app for a server application (say I wanted to automatically transcribe voice mails) and I don’t need features of OCS, what are the differences between the two APIs?

• How to mass insert/update in linq to sql?

  Hi How can I do these 2 scenarios. First I validate the records one at a time. I then want to insert them into the database but instead of doing submitChanges() after each record I want to do a mass submit at the end. I first validate it. If valid then I have to update a table before I insert the record. I then insert the record. After that I want to save everything in one go. I am not sure if I can do a mass save when updating of if that has to be after every time or what. But I thought it would work for sure for the insert one. Nothing seems to crash and I am not sure how to check if the records are being added to the dbcontext.

• Hibernate: Dirty Checking and Only Update of Dirty Attributes?

  Hello Experts, in "good old JDBC days" I wrote a lot of SQL Queries that did very targeted updates of only the "attributes/members" that were actually changed: For Example having an object with the following members: public String name; public String address; public Date date; If only date was changed in some Business Method I would only issue an SQL UPDATE for the date member. ==It seems however (thats my "impression" of hibernate) that when working with a standard Hibernate mapping (mapping the full class), even updates of only one single member lead to a full update of the object in SQL Statements generated by Hibernate. My Questions are: 1.) Is this observation correct, that hibernate DOES NOT intelligently check (in a fully mapped class), what member(s) where changed and then only issue updates for the specific changed members, but rather always will update (in the generated SQL Update Statement) all mapped members (of a class), even if they were not changed (in case the object is dirty due to one member being dirty...) 2.) What can I do to make Hibernate only update those members, that have been changed? I am searching for a solution to have hibernate only update the member that actually changed. (I know hibernate does some big work on doing dirty-checking, but as far as I know this dirtychecking is only relevant to identify if the object as whole is dirty, not what single member is dirty.) • What is the best way to determine the path to the ISV directory?

  MSCRM 4.0 Problem: I'm currently storing xml files in the ISV directory along with my web applications. From a plugin (or potentially a seperate app), I need to find an easy way to navigate to the ISV directory to read these xml files. This routine will be called extremely often, so processing minimization should be a strong consideration. Potential solutions: Registry: There is a registry key called 'WebSitePath' with the data 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\CRM'. Could potentially use this to build the path. (Will this be the same on all systems/installations?) IIS directory data: Looping through the DirectoryEntries of path '"IIS://localhost/W3SVC"' I could obtain the the web application where description is equal to "Microsoft Dynamics CRM". (Will this be the same on all systems/installations?) Webservice: Create one to read and return the data contained in these xml files The webservice would have easy access to its executing directory. Database: Store the data of these files in the database. Help: Can anyone suggest a simpler solution to obtaining and reading a file from the ISV directory? If not, which of the above solutions would be the quickest to process? Thanks for any and all contributions.

• Need help with WCF design

  I have been tasked with creating a set of web services. We are a Microsoft shop, so I will be using WCF for this project. There is an interesting design consideration that I haven't been able to figure out a solution for yet. I'll try to explain it with an example: My WCF service exposes a method named Foo(). 10 different users call Foo() at roughly the same time. I have 5 special resources called R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5. We don't really need to know what the resource is, other than the fact that a particular resource can only be in use by one caller at a time. Foo() is responsible to performing an action using one of these special resources. So, in a round-robin fashion, Foo() needs to find a resource that is not in use. If no resources are available, it must wait for one to be freed up. At first, this seems like an easy task. I could maybe create a singleton that keeps track of which resources are currently in use. The big problem is the fact that I need this solution to be viable in a web farm scenario. I'm sure there is a good solution to this problem, but I've just never run across this scenario before. I need some sort of resource tracker / provider that can be shared between multiple WCF hosts. Any ideas from the architects out there would be greatly appreciated!

• Choosing between .NET Service Bus Queues vs Azure Queue Service

  Just a quick question regarding an Azure application. If I have a number of Web and Worker roles that need to communicate, documentation says to use the Azure Queue Service. However, I've just read that the new .NET Service Bus now also offers queues. These look to be more powerful as they appear to offer a much more detailed API. Whilst the .NSB looks more interesting it has a couple of issues that make me wary of using it in distributed application. (for example, Queue Expiration... if I cannot guarantee that a queue will be renewed on time I may lose it all!). Has anyone had any experience using either of these two technologies and could give any advice on when to choose one over the other. I suspect that whilst the service bus looks more powerful, as my use case is really just enabling Web/Worker roles to communicate between each other, that the Azure Queue Service is what I'm after. But I'm just really looking for confirmation of that before progamming myself in to a corner :-) Thanks in advance. UPDATE Have read up about the two systems over the break. It defo looks like .NET service bus is more specifically designed for integrating systems rather than providing a general purpose reliable messaging system. Azure Queues are distributed and so reliable and scalable in a way that .NSB queues are not and so more suitable for code hosted within Azure itself. Thanks for the responses.

• Sync Framework Considerations for Smart Client app

  Microsoft Sync Framework with SQL 2005? Is it possible? It seems to hint that the OOTB providers use SQL2008 functionality. I'm looking for some quick wins in relation to a sync project. The client app will be offline for a number of days. There will be a central server that MUST be SQL Server 2005. I can use .net 3.5. Basically the client app could go offline for a week. When it comes back online it needs to sync its data. But the good thing is that the data only needs to push to the server. The stuff that syncs back to the client will just be lookup data which the client never changes. So this means I don't care about sync collisions. To simplify the scenario for you, this smart client goes offline and the user surveys data about some observations. They enter the data into the system. When the laptop is reconnected to the network, it syncs back all that data to the server. There will be other clients doing the same thing too, but no one ever touches each other's data. Then there are some reports on the server for viewing the data that has been pushed to the server. This also needs to use ClickOnce. My biggest concern is that there is an interim release while a client is offline. This release might require a new field in the database, and a new field to fill in on the survey. Obviously that new field will be nullable because we can't update old data, that's fine to set as an assumption. But when the client connects up and its local data schema and the server schema don't match, will sync framework be able to handle this? After the data is pushed to the server it is discarded locally. Hope my problem makes sense.

• Hibernate not saving foreign key, but with junit it's ok

  Hi All, I have this strange problem. In a J2ee webapp with spring, smartgwt and hibernate, it happens that I have a class A wich has a set of class B, both of them mapped to table A and table B. I wrote a simple test case for testing the service manager which is supposed to do insert, update, delete and everything work as expected especially during insert. In the end I have one record in A and records in B with foreign key to A. But when I try to call the service from the web app, the entity in B are saved without a foreign key reference. I am sure that the service is the same. One thing I noticed is that enabling hibernate logging, seems that when the service is called from the application, one more update is made: insert A insert B update A update B update B (foreign key only) update A <--- ??? update B <--- ??? Instead, when junit test case is run, the update is as follows: insert A insert B update A update B update B (foreign key only) I suppose the latest update is what is causing the erroe, maybe it is overwriting values. Considering that the app is using spring, with the well known mechanism of DAO + Manager, where can I investigate to solve this issue ? Someone told me that the session is not closed, so hibernate would do one more update before release the objects by itself. I am pretty sure that all the configuration hbm, xml, and the rest are fine...but I maybe wrong. thanks
