  I'm new to stackoverflow and have been reading through a bunch of the "highest voted" questions for GWT. Several of these questions talk about the pitfalls or problems with GWT. In the articles: Which Javascript framework (jQuery vs Dojo vs … )? and Biggest GWT Pitfalls?, some posters seem to suggest that GWT is not lightweight enough or that there are better alternatives that may be used. Do most of you feel that there are problems with GWT that have not been fixed with GWT 2.0 -- which would make you inclined to suggest using a simpler framework for a new project? To some extent, shouldn't GWT be somewhat future-proof (since you don't have to worry about it changing drastically from release to release and since it is backed by Google)? I realize that the answer to this question depends greatly upon what you want to do or what you wish to make. I am looking at this from the perspective of starting a new web application that will eventually be used by millions of users.

  I'm trying to connect to existing instance of EC2 with a new PEM. But I get this error when I try to connect. Here is what I did so far. • Web form is not updating tables, why?

  I have a web application and on page is an update page to update some profile information. Below is the code I am using to update the table. But I think it is wrong. Does anything stick out? The connection string works cause it is used to read the database to get the profile information, I just removed it due to it containing password/login info for the db. player is the class of properties that contains player information and ds is the dataset, but I would like to update the database itself online... Am I missing something here?

  Hi, I have a database with Users. Users have Items. These Items can change actively. How do you access the items in a collection type format? For the user, I fill all the user properties at the time of instantiation. If I load the user's items at the time of the instantiation, and the items change, they will have old data. I was thinking, maybe I need an ItemCollection class and have that a field/property apart of the user class, that way to traverse all the user's items I could use a foreach loop. So, my question is, what is the best practice/best way of accessing the items from a database using some sort of collection? On accessing the particular Item, it needs to get the latest database information, and when the user does do a foreach loop, the latest item information must be available. I.e. What I'm trying to do Console.WriteLine(User.Items[3].ID); returns 5. //this updates the item information and saves it to the database. User.Items[3].ID = 13; //Add a new item to the database. User.Items.Add(new Item { id = 17}); foreach (Item item in User.Items) { //this would traverse all items in the database. //not some cached copy at the time of instantiation of the user. }

• Are there any good Java API for facebook?

  I've played around a bit with twitter4j and found it absolutely wonderful. Now I've been looking into the equivalent for facebook but so far haven't had much luck finding a decent project. I looked into facebook-java-api but it appears that they break their API from release to release. I consider this unacceptable. I'm currently playing around a bit with RestFB and the API seems decent so far but I've been having some connection problems. I'm just looking for a simple library that lets me post status updates, send direct messages and get a list of friends through minimal coding effort. Has anyone had any success using a java API for facebook and if so, what are you using? Thanks.

  I'm using authorize.net and activemerchant in a rails app. When I make a purchase authorize.net sends back an email with information about the purchase. I should be able to send them the billing and shipping address information and have that returned in the email, but it's not returning any of the information, obviously I've got the varable names wrong, anybody know what they should be? I've been pouring over the authorize.net api docs and activemerchant's but can't find what I need.   I have a software project I want to release under GPLv3, it uses two pieces of code that other parties have developed (one is the DLR by Microsoft, which is under the Microsoft Public License and the other piece of code is under the New BSD License). The BSD licensed code is compiled into the same binary as my code (but none of it is changed) The Ms-PL licensed code is compiled into another assembly next to my code and linked at runtime (and none of it is changed what so ever). Can I release my software under GPLv3 and without any legal problems?

What am i doing wrong?

  I am creating a registry site so similar people can find each other easily. I don't want to use Facebook Connect as the primary log in method or use Facebook to store their information. I'll be creating a database on my end to store that info. For security reasons I won't be displaying the users address, phone number or email address so I wanted to provide the next best way for people to connect with each other, this is where Facebook comes in. Normally I would just ask them to type their Facebook URL in a text box but I don't think most people know what their url is which is why I think I need to use Facebook Connect. So here is my idea..when the users signs up there is a check box that when checked signifies they are allowing people to find them on Facebook. I assume once they click the register button that a Facebook Connect popup will show up asking for permission to access their Facebook account. When they "allow" it, then I can get their profile url. All I need is their Facebook profile url, I don't want any other Facebook features or information. Is Facebook Connect the best thing to use for this scenario? Is there an easier way? Several months ago on the Facebook Connect site their used to be examples of doing this, but all the documentation has been rearranged and changed and I can't seem to find the information. Any help you can provide would be great!

  I'm still feeling my way around C++, and am a complete ATL newbie, so I apologize if this is a basic question. I'm starting with an existing VC++ executable project that has functionality I'd like to expose as an ActiveX object (while sharing as much of the source as possible between the two projects). I've approached this by adding an ATL project to the solution in question, and in that project have referenced all the .h and .cpp files from the executable project, added all the appropriate references, and defined all the preprocessor macros. So far so good. But I'm getting a compiler error in one file (HideDesktop.cpp). (The ATL AX project, naturally enough, defines _ATL_DLL, but I can't see where that would make a difference.) My current workaround is to use a normal "dumb" pointer, like so: IActiveDesktop *pIActiveDesktop; HRESULT hr = ::CoCreateInstance(CLSID_ActiveDesktop, NULL, // no outer unknown CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER, IID_IActiveDesktop, (void**)&pIActiveDesktop); And that works, provided I remember to release it. • project organization between x86 and x64

  I have a mixed language solution in VS2008. I would like to structure the bin such that I have bin\x86\Release and bin\x64\Release among the other options. I can do something like this if I have all C# or all C++, but as the platform names don't overlap (x86 vs. Win32) between C++ and C#, I can't seem to do this with the macros (and have an easy solution). I've tried to add a new platform and it won't let me. Is there an easy way to do this?

• Algorithm To Select Most Popular Places from Database

  We have a website that contains a database of places. For each place our users are able to take one of the follow actions which we record: VIEW - View it's profile RATING - Rate it on a scale of 1-5 stars REVIEW - Review it COMPLETED - Mark that they've been there WISH LIST - Mark that they want to go there FAVORITE - Mark that it's one of their favorites In our database table of places each place contains a count of the number of times each action above was taken as well as the average rating given by users. views ratings avg_rating completed wishlist favorite What we want to be able to do is generate lists of the top places using the above information. Ideally, we would want to be able to generate this list using a relatively simple SQL query without needing to do any legwork to calculate additional fields or stack rank places against one another. That being said, since we only have about 50,000 places we could run a nightly cron job to calculate some fields such as rankings on different categories if it would make a meaningful difference in the overall results of our top places. I'd appreciate if you could make some suggestions on how we should think about bubbling the best places to the top, which criteria we should weight more heavily, and given that information - suggest what the MySQL query would need to look like in order to select the top 10 places. One thing to note is that at this time we are less concerned with the recency of a place being popular - meaning that looking at the aggregate information is fine and that more recent data doesn't need to be weighted more heavily. • Need Help With Simple Counting Bug in iPhone SDK

However, the first tap issued doesn't take any action but adds one (just as planned) on the second tap.
