• Delphi, PGDac vs Zeos, Fetch, Lookup?

  Hi! I used Zeos to test to know: is ZTable uses fetch technics, or not? May in the future we migrate our lesser system to PGSQL, and this used now "Table" components (as BDE, but it have an SQL-like server). These tables use real cursors, a "Window" with N record, so lookup is very fast, because the Locate/Lookup is started on server, and only these N records are refreshed, no matter, how many records in the lookup table. PGSQL uses fetch technics as I know, and I tested it with a table (id int, name varchar(100)), and 1 million records. (I also trying this with mysql). The adapter is Zeos. ID, sec to find, allocated memory in bytes on client. I want to ask more things: a.) Is PGDAC have some technics to we can use the lookups without pay the fetch with memory and secs? b.) Or is PG ODBC driver can help in this problem with ADO? (As I know ADO can use server side cursors)? c.) Have anybody some experience with lookup tables, and performance? Is this critical question or it is not? (With client memory usage too). d.) I click on any functions within one.js and if those functions exists in the same one.js, the control is going to the respective function. Suppose if the function exists in two.js, the control is not going to two.js Can any one help me with this?

• Access to variables in an asp.net user control vs an include file

  I've asked this question before but couldn't get the answer I was looking for so I'm going to try it again. I'm translating pages from old asp to asp.net and I don't want to do this any other way so I really just want to know if this can be done. In asp, I'd assign a variable on one page <% myVar = "something" %> I could assign many variables here and then use an include <!--#include file="Test2.aspx"--> then in test2 file, I could access all the variables without having to pass all the variables into the control or declaring them again, like <% myVar = "something else" %> I want to do this the dot net way but I have some thirty variables on the page and i don't want to pass a bunch into the user control and I don't want to have to keep declaring the same variables. All I really want to know is if there is some way to replicate the behavior above in asp.net?

• SQL GUID Vs Integer

  Hi I have recently started a new job and noticed that all the SQL tables use the GUID data type for the primary key. In my previous job we used integers (Auto-Increment) for the primary key and it was a lot more easier to work with in my opinion. For example, say you had two related tables; Product and ProductType - I could easily cross check the 'ProductTypeID' column of both tables for a particular row to quickly map the data in my head because its easy to store the number (2,4,45 etc) as opposed to (E75B92A3-3299-4407-A913-C5CA196B3CAB). The extra frustration comes from me wanting to understand how the tables are related, sadly there is no Database diagram :( A lot of people say that GUID's are better because you can define the unique identifer in your C# code for example using NewID() without requiring SQL SERVER to do it - this also allows you to know provisionally what the ID will be.... but I've seen that it is possible to still retrieve the 'next auto-incremented integer' too. A DBA contractor reported that our queries could be up to 30% faster if we used the Integer type instead of GUIDS... Why does the GUID data type exist, what advantages does it really provide?... Even if its a choice by some professional there must be some good reasons as to why its implemented?

• Getting a Method's Return Value in the VS Debugger

  Is it possible to get a method's return value in the Visual Studio debugger, even if that value isn't assigned to a local variable? For example, I'm debugging the following code: public string Foo(int valueIn) { if (valueIn > 100) return Proxy.Bar(valueIn); else return "Not enough"; } Since I'm not setting any local variables in Foo, and assuming I'm not setting a break point in whatever's calling Foo, is there a way to see what the return value is if I have a breakpoint inside of Foo (or another way)? I don't have much experience with the Autos or Intermediate windows, so I'm not sure if those are even a valid option or not.

  Hi, I' ve got 2 tables... Challenge and ChallengeYear, ChallengeYear is only to create a list of years in challenge. I only want to make Challenge an entity, containing a list of List years. Is this possible? I've looked in to @SecondaryTable together with @JoinColumn and @OneToMany, but neither of those can do the trick, or i am overlooking something. Can someone help me? • DurandalJS vs AngularJS?

  I'm looking for a JS framework to build an SPA and found DurandalJS and AngularJS. Can anyone compare these two frameworks? I did find many articles that compares AngularJS and KnockoutJS, and they say AngularJS is more than data binding, so I think DurandalJS may be the one to compare. I did a little research on AngularJS, it is good but one thing is bad: the $ prefix does not work when minified, although there is an ugly workaround. And someone said Twitter Bootstrap does not work well with it (I didn't check). For DurandalJS, I still cannot find the samples (http://durandaljs.com/documentation/Understanding-the-Samples/), so it's hard to say. PS: are they working well with TypeScript? Best regards, Zach

• DataTable vs. Collection in .Net

  I am writing a program that needs to read a set of records that describe the register map of a device I need to communicate with. Each record will have a handfull of fields that describe the properties of each register. I don't really need to edit or modify the data in my VB or C# program, though I would like to be able to display the data on a grid. I would like to store the data in a CSV file, or perhaps an XML file. I need to enable users to edit the data off-line, preferably in excel. I am considering using a DataTable or a Collection of "Register" objects (which I would define). I prototyped a DataTable, and found I can read/write XML easily using the built in methods and I can easily bind to a DataGridView. I was not able to find a way to retreive info on a single register without using a query that returns a collection of rows, even though I defined a unique primaty key column. The syntax to get a value from a column is also complex, though I could be missing something on both counts. I'm tempted to use a collection of "Register" objects that I can access via a unique key. It would be a little more coding up front, but seems like a cleaner solution overall. I should still be able to use LINQ to dataset to query subsets of registers when I need them, but would also be able to grab a single field using a the key value, something like this: Registers(keyValue).fieldName). Which would be a cleaner approach to the problem? Is there a way to read/write XML into a Collection without needing custom code? Could this be accomplished using String for a key?

  Hi, Looking over some older code, I've run into a strange namespace error. Let's say I have two projects, HelperProject and WebProject. The full namespace of each - as given in application properties - is myEmployer.HelperProject and myEmployer.Web.WebProject. The pages in the web project are full of statements that use classes from the helper project. There are no imports/using statements but there is a reference to the helper project added in the bin. A few example lines might be: myEmployer.HelperProject.StringHelper.GetFixedLengthText(Text, "", Me.Width, 11) myEmploter.HelperProject.Utils.StringHelper.EstimatePixelLength(Text, 11) However every line that is written in this manner is throwing the error 'HelperProject' is not a member of 'myEmployer'. If you declare the statements like this: HelperProject.StringHelper.GetFixedLengthText(Text, "", Me.Width, 11) HelperProject.Utils.StringHelper.EstimatePixelLength(Text, 11) Everything seems fine. In the solution object browser and the bin folder, HelperProject appears with its full namespace, myEmployer.HelperProject. I don't want to have to change all the statements, and besides I suspect this is masking a more fundamental problem here. But I have no idea what's going on. Can anyone offer any pointers please?   Hi, Can anyone tell me why calling "unserialize" works fine in an action but gives an offset error in a template? It's basically possible to unserialize a database text result into a variable in an action and pass it to template, in which case it displays fine: $this->clean = unserialize($this->raw); <?php echo $clean ?> But not if called directly in a template: <?php echo unserialize($raw) ?> Would be interested in knowing why this is so and whether there's some workaround. • Sync Framework: SqlSyncProvider ItemConflicting vs ApplyChangeFailed

  I'm trying to use design a syncronisation application that syncs changes between different SQL Server databases. I came up with a design based around receiving the ItemConflicting event, storing the knowledge associated with the conflict, and resolving all conflicts off-line. However, it seems that I can only get the ApplyChangeFailed event to fire. Is there some reason why SqlSyncProvider does not use the ItemConflicting event? Am I just hooking up to the event wrongly? The reason I care is that the ItemConlficting event allows me to simply log the conflict and continue with the rest of the synchronisation in a way that I can't seem to achieve with the ApplychangeFailed event.

• VS 2010 Layer Diagram Validation Error is Showing A Dependency That Doesn't Even Exist (AV0001)

  I'm getting the following validation error on my layer diagram Error 65 AV0001 : Invalid Dependency : Weld.Interface.Core(Assembly) -- Weld.Interface(Namespace) Layers: Application Framework Core, Application Framework | Dependencies: Namespace Reference D:\Projects\Windows Projects\Weld\Weld\ModelingProject1\Weld.layerdiagram 0 0 ModelingProject1 Weld.Interface.Core: This assembly and namespace does not have a reference to Weld.Interface and only references .NET Framework classes Weld.Interface: This assembly and namespace does not have a reference to Weld.Interface There is no dependancy between these two layers in the dependency diagram. I am confused why I am getting this error. No dependency in the project or code, and no dependency is even setup in the layer diagram. Somehow the Validation logic in the layer diagram is seeing a non existant dependency and saying it is an error. Any ideas what either I might have missed or what is causing this problem?

  I have a stylistic question about the choice of background thread implementation I should use on a windows form app. Currently I have a BackgroundWorker on a form that has an infinite (while(true)) loop. In this loop I use WaitHandle.WaitAny to keep the thread snoozing until something of interest happens. One of the event handles I wait on is a "stopthread" event so that I can break out of the loop. This event is signaled when from my overridden Form.Dispose(). I read somewhere that BackgroundWorker is really intended for operations that you dont want to tie up the UI with and have an finite end - like downloading a file, or processing a sequence of items. In this case the "end" is unknown and only when the window is closed. Therefore would it be more appropriate for me to use a background Thread instead of BackgroundWorker for this purpose?

  Hi Ejb timer service can start some process in desired time intervals. Also we can do the same thing with cron (min 1 minute) interval. But doing it with cron we have more power on controlling, monitoring and changing the intervals. Also we can restart if needed the cron very easily by command line. Also we can add or remove lines in the cron transparently. What are the advantages of using ejb timer services over calling the ejbs from cron ? (several lines of code in the cron classes are not a problem) Regards.
