  • How can I restore my original IME Romaji input settings?

    the this one, Japanese IME on Windows: switch back to romaji input method (3) did not help. The problem seems the same. My Vista home premium version PC, I had been using Microsoft IME to use English and Japanese input using romaji henkan for a long time. One day, all of a sudden, first when I started up the PC, it has cap lock indicator ON. So, I press SHIFT key, CAP lock indicator is off!(This I have to do every morning.) Now when I want to type romaji input to change to Japanese, I switch EN English (United States) to "JP Japanese (Japan) and select input to hiragana input. It worked until that day. But now when I set to input romaji for hiragana as I used to do and start typing, then it shows Japanese hiragana directly on the display just as keyboard setting as Japanese ???109???????? as shown in Wikipedia JIS keyboard. And I cannot show hiragana as I wanted ( I can convert to Kanji OK) etc. by hitting space key. But its key board arrangement is what I never learned. Other thing I found is when I hit "`" key, it switches between hiragana and alphabet. When I see Control panel setting it is the same setting as I have seen. Please suggest me a solution to get the original setting for IME input mode as I used to do. John K.

  • Linux laptop encryption

    What are my options for encrypting the /home directories of my Ubuntu laptops? They are currently setup without any encryption and some have /home as a separate partition whilst others don't. Most of these laptops are single-user standalone laptops which are out on the road a lot. Is ecryptfs and the encrypted Private directory good enough or are there better, more secure, options? If somebody got hold of the laptop, how easy would it be for them to gain access to the encrypted files? Similar questions for encrypted lvm, truecrypt and any other solution I may not be aware of.

It seems like it is possible, according to the answer.microsoft.com the key will work for 64bit or 32bit.

  • rTorrent, too low memory usage !?

    I want to know from more experienced rTorrent users how to tweak the .rtorrent.rc so that rTorrent will cache disk reading and writing (same as uTorrent does). I have set the max_memory_usage = 1GB but this amount is not used. I run 6 rTorrent instances on a Quad Core, 8 GB Ram machine and total used memory reported by htop is only ~500MB. I need to use memory buffers cause disk IO activity is very high.

  • Installing Linux on an Asus p8z68-m PRO Motherboard

    Here is a challenge: how is this done? I've tried disabling the ASM1061 controller in the Onboard Devices section, using Wubi, booting from USB (as I don't have a DVD drive, yet), and even booting from RAID/IDE (with AHCI as the default) to do this. Still, no dice. Google shows up virtually nothing related about Linux and this mobo, apart from a people just saying "disable ASMedia" (which, I assume is the ASM1061 controller, as that's all I see - apart from the USB 3.0, which I disabled already) and it hasn't really helped much. Thus, what is wrong here? Edit My problem is that I cannot boot Linux via USB or a simple Windows installer such as Wubi (for Ubuntu). I wind up getting error messages along the lines of write cache failed, along with many other cryptic error messages similar to the following: [ 1400.351374] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Test WP failed, assume Write Enabled [ 1400.353433] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Asking for cache data failed [ 1400.356601] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through This seems to be common for Asus P8Z68-M Pro motherboards, with the only notable solution being to "disable ASMedia", which, as I said before, I'm guessing is the ASM1061 controller on the motherboard. Despite already disabling this, I have tried this with both Fedora and Ubuntu without any success. I need to know what I can do about this; has anyone ran into something similar or heard about this issue before? I know these motherboards are relatively new...

    In Windows 8, in the scenario where there is a single user that has a Microsoft Account (i.e., they have created their account via a Microsoft email address) how does one disable the password prompt when unlocking the screen? The Windows 7 analogy would be to disable the screensaver password prompt. I can do this on a "local" account (one not backed by Microsoft) but the setting seems to have no effect on connected accounts. To replicate: create an account using [email protected] or [email protected] Lock the screen with WinKey+L Attempt to unlock, by clicking the mouse, without entering a password.

  • Print full path of files and sizes with find in Linux

    Here are the specs: Find all files in / modified after the modification time of /tmp/test, exclude /proc and /sys from the search, and print the full path of the file along with human readable size. Here is what I have so far: find / \( -path /proc -o -path /sys \) -prune -o -newer /tmp/test -exec ls -lh {} \; | less The issue is that the full path doesn't get printed. Unfortunately, ls doesn't support printing the full path! And all solutions I have found that show how to print the full path suggest using find. :| Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Fine control over zoom and aspect ratio in VLC player

    In VLC Player (v1.01), how do I zoom video and control aspect ratio with fine control, as is possible with Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPCHC)? The standard zoom appears to only support double, normal, quarter size etc, not useful to me at all. An example: I play an older music video file that is in 4:3 aspect ratio. In MPCHC I can use the number pad to zoom in small increments until I have removed the left and right letterbox bars and the video fills the whole screen. I can also stretch and move the video in small increments until I am happy with the aspect ratio and position. I could continue using MPCHC, but I have two displays and really like VLC feature enabling full-screen video on the main screen and the VLC interface (menus etc) on the second. I have not found a way to do this on MPCHC, if anyone knows I'd also be interested to hear.

    Swiftfox (a Firefox variant) is taking ages to load in my Debian Lenny system. I have been using Swiftfox on several other Linux distributions without any problem; it works flawlessly on Arch, Fedora, Gentoo (my other OSes). But it's giving me trouble in Debian Lenny. I haven't yet found any clue as to why. Please help me shed some light on the problem. I periodically prune the Swiftfox/Firefox internal database, and I keep it up-to-date with the latest versions available. I am confused with this problem in Debian Lenny. What should I try to troubleshoot this further? Cheers!

  • Password Manager that can sync a Blackberry and Mac OS X.

    I use a Blackberry Bold and a Macbook Pro. I am looking for a solution to have a synchronized password manager between the two devices. All the commercial ones I have discovered won't work between a Blackberry and a Mac. The almost solution was KeePass. I like the application on the Blackberry but I could not get the sync working reliably to the Mac. As well, I had to run the PC application by using Mono on the Mac and it was pretty slow. I am happy to pay for a good solution.

Then I can analyze from the top level to the details of every term. But I just don't know how to realize that. Maybe there are some existed software which can visualize this kind of complex formula. Any idea? P.S. I use Linux system. The open source alternatives are better.

This is to find candidates for deletion from my nearly full hard drive. I'm not very well informed about the rich ecosystem of desktop GUI tools (I use aptitude); does anyone know if one of those tools, or any other tool, can identify how recently a package has been used?

    Hi all, I have a question about using a web site host in my computer, say Computer A, using any web server hosting application e.g : apache. I connect to my website in my very same computer A, and request to download a file of size 1Mb, in otherwords, I am connecting to my own computer and want to download a file in my computer. In addition, my internet access is bound by a proxy server in a way of gateway. The questions are - does the file transfer really exist? Or is it a local file copying between 2 location? Will my data packet go through the proxy, to the internet, and go back to the proxy and return to me? Thanks everyone who are watching this question.

Just to be clear, we're not wanting to know if any of the runtime files (listed below) are or were included with any of the previous versions (Beta, CTP, RS etc) or releases of Windows 8 - we are just interested in this compatibility question as far as Windows 8 RTM (Final Version) is concerned. In addition, if possible, we would also like to know which of the below files (if any) come shipped and registered with the Windows 8 RT (on ARM) version. As far as the ARM version is concerned, you're welcome to base your answer on the latest version of Windows 8 RT (on ARM) that is available at the date and time your answer is posted. (This will also serve to future-proof this question as additional releases or versions of Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT on ARM come out).   • Windows 7 playback of dvr-Microsoft files stutters

    I've just had to install Windows 7 on my Media Center machine because my Vista installation had a faulty drive. I've got the latest drivers that I can find - Intel 945GM integrated Graphics, Realtek audio drivers. Things are working OK with one exception. Playback of old recordings, from dvr-Microsoft format files, is choppy. The picture freezes for a fraction of a second, then quickly catches up. The sound is uninterrupted and doesn't pause. These freezes happen once every 5 seconds or so. It's very regular. Playback of Live TV from the digital tuner is perfectly smooth. DVD playback is perfectly smooth. As an experiment, I used the MPEG editing package VideoReDo to create a small test file in three different formats. This program takes the raw MPEG streams and repackages them into the desired container. I took the same clip and created three files in three formats: dvr-Microsoft (Microsoft's old recorded TV format); mpg (standard MPEG); and ts (raw MPEG transport stream of the kind often produced by PVRs). When these three files are played back under Windows 7, the mpg and ts files play smoothly, but the dvr-Microsoft file stutters. The last piece of data I have is that two other Windows 7 machines can play back dvr-Microsoft files smoothly with no stuttering. One is a netbook, with less grunt than the media centre. So there must be something specific about my Media Center machine that's causing the problem. Does anyone have any idea where I can look now? I don't know much about AV software, codecs, filter graphs etc. but I suspect that's where the problem lies. Rendering the video isn't the problem, but extracting the streams is. How would I go about diagnosing the problem? Edited to add: I just used the GraphStudio tool to look at the filter graph on the offending PC. The filter graph it uses by default for dvr-Microsoft looks identical to the other machines, and, interestingly, when I play the files using GraphStudio they run smoothly. Under Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center they stutter. I'd like to see the filter graph for Windows Media Player but GraphStudio won't show it. It looks like Windows Media Player and WMC are using a different decoding path to GraphStudio. Edited again to add: Today I purchased a new HDTV. The same Media Center driving the TV at 1080p is now playing back the old Recorded TV files smoothly, without stuttering. So whatever the cause of the original problem, using a different resolution seems to have removed the problem. It might also explain why nobody else has had this problem. I doubt many people use Media Centre with a 14in portable TV.

  • If Nvidia Shield can stream a game via WiFi (~150-300Mbps), where is the 1-10Gbps wired streaming?

    Facts: It is surprising and uncharacteristic that a wireless game streaming solution is the *first to hit the market when a 1000mbps+ Ethernet connection would accomplish the same feat with roughly 6x the available bandwidth. 150-300mbps WiFi is in no way superior to a 1000mbps+ LAN connection aside from well wireless mobility. Throughout time, (since the internet was created) wired services have **always come first yet in this particular case, the opposite seems to be true. We had wired internet first, wired audio streaming, and wired video streaming all before their wireless counterparts. Why? Largely because the wireless bandwidth was and is inferior. Even today despite being significantly better and capable of a lot more, it is still inferior to a wired connection. Situation: Chief among these is that NVIDIA’s Shield handheld game console will be getting a microconsole-like mode, dubbed “Shield Console Mode”, that will allow the handheld to be converted into a more traditional TV-connected console. In console mode Shield can be controlled with a Bluetooth controller, and in accordance with the higher resolution of TVs will accept 1080p game streaming from a suitably equipped PC, versus 720p in handheld mode. With that said 1080p streaming will require additional bandwidth, and while 720p can be done over WiFi NVIDIA will be requiring a hardline GigE connection for 1080p streaming (note that Shield doesn’t have Ethernet, so this is presumably being done over USB). Streaming aside, in console mode Shield will also support its traditional local gaming/application functionality. - http://www.anandtech.com/show/7435/nvidia-consolidates-game-streaming-tech-under-gamestream-brand-announces-shield-console-mode ^ This is not acceptable to me for a number of reasons not to mention the ridiculousness of having a little screen+controller unit sitting there while using a secondary controller and screen instead. That kind of redundant absurdity exemplifies how wrong of a solution that is. They need a second product for this solution without the screen or controller for it to make sense... at which point your just buying a little computer that does what most other larger computers do better. While this secondary project will provide a wired connection, it still shouldn't be necessary to purchase a Shield to have this benefit. Not only this but Intel's WiDi claims game streaming support as well - wirelessly. Where is the wired streaming? All that is required, by my understanding, is the ability to decode H.264 video compression and transmit control/feedback so by any logical comparison, one (Nvidia especially) should have no difficulty in creating an application for PC's (win32/64 environment) that does the exact same thing their android app does. I have 2 video cards capable of streaming (encoding) H.264 so by right they must be capable of decoding it I would think. I should be able to stream to my second desktop or my laptop both of which by hardware comparison are superior to the Shield. I haven't found anything stating plans to allow non-shield owners to do this. Can a third party create this software or does it hinge on some limitation that only Nvidia can overcome? Reiteration of questions: Is there a technical reason (non marketing) for why Nvidia opted to bottleneck the streaming service with a wireless connection limiting the resolution to 720p and introducing intermittent video choppiness when on a wired connection one could achieve, presumably, 1080p with significantly less or zero choppiness? Is there anything limiting developers from creating a PC/Desktop application emulating the same H.264 decoding functionality that circumvents the need to get an Nvidia Shield altogether? (It is not a matter of being too cheap to support Nvidia - I have many Nvidia cards that aren't being used. One should not have to purchase specialty hardware when = hardware already exists) Same questions go for Intel Widi also. I am just utterly perplexed that there are wireless live streaming solution and yet no wired. How on earth can wireless be the goto transmission medium? Is there another solution that takes advantage of H.264 video compression allowing live streaming over a wired connection? (*) - Perhaps this isn't the first but afaik it is the first complete package. (**) - I cant back that up with hard evidence/links but someone probably could. Edit: Maybe this will be the solution I am looking for but I still find it hard to believe that they would be the first and after wireless solutions already exist.     I have installed LMDE (with grub in MBR) after I installed Windows 8.1. However, grub is refusing to load them, complaining about the invalid signature. What do I do now?

  • configure squid3 to set up a web proxy in ubuntu12.04

    I am in a LAN and have to use a proxy given to access the web in a very limited way. I can't even use google, github.com or SE sites. However I can use ssh to log into a server, which I have root access so basically I can do anything I want with it. So I was thinking that maybe I could use that server as a proxy so I can visit sites through it. I tested it using ssh -vT [email protected] which gave a proper response. And In my computer I can't do this. Also I tried downloading something from the gun.org using wget, which can't be done in my computer too. And it succeeded on that server. I don't know if that's enough to say that this server have full access to the Internet. But I assumed so and I installed squid3 on it. After trying some while, I failed to get it working. After configuring my computer, I got this error: Access control configuration prevents your request from being allowed at this time. Please contact your service provider if you feel this is incorrect. And the log in the server showed that my TCP requests had all been denied. So, first of all, is what I am trying to do achievable? If so, how to configure the squid in the server so that I use it as a proxy to surf the Internet? My computer and the server both run Ubuntu11.04. Thanks for any help~
