• What are some things I should watch out for before hiring a freelance programmer

  I am looking to hire a freelancer for a big web application. The budget for this project is a little over $20,000. The programmer will develop in asp.net MVC C#. Are there any usual things I should pay attention to or watch out for. i really don't want to hire the freelancer and when he/she is done with the project it is not what i expect. I have heard horror stories where the programmer delivered a fantastic product but the code was not commented and parts of the software was hidden behind DLLs. Is there anyway to avoid situations like this? I am sure I cannot think of every possible scenario when i write the project description. Also, is it advisable to hire a lawyer to write the contract?

  Hi I'm about to release some software as open source. It uses Lucene (Apache license) and jopt simple (MIT license). Are there any constraints on the license that I am going to apply to my own software? In particular, it is an adaptation of Lucene for performing content-based search on audio (so, many classes are inherited and in one case copied with a little modification). It only uses jopt simple for handling command line arguments (i.e. no modification at all, just "import" and "new OptionParser..."). Thanks for your help Nicola Montecchio

• Worths to spend $100 to create a browser based game ?

  I'm creating a browser based games and I've calculated that it will cost me something like $100 for the domain name and the host. The game uses almost no resources (bandwidth, space, memory). The problem is that I don't know how to find the players, and how many players I need to get a profit. I`m planning to use BuySellAds and Google Adsense. I think the game is pretty good, but I think I will have just a little amount of unique visitors, because each player is counted as unique only once. So what do you think, it will worth ?

  I recently came across the Pomodoro Technique as a way to increase productivity, get in the zone, and in general feel a sense of accomplishment at setting some short programming goals and achieving them. So far I have enjoyed it and the sense of accomplishment I get after seeing a bunch of short goals add up at the end of the day to a lot of work done on a programming project. What other ideas, similar or not, add a little variety to achieving goals, personal productivity, get in the programming zone, and so forth? What ideas or techniques are expressed formally, such as those in the Pomodoro paper, rather than trite maxims?

• Is it possible to use re2 from Python?

  i just discovered http://code.google.com/p/re2, a promising library that uses a long-neglected way (Thompson NFA) to implement a regular expression engine that can be orders of magnitudes faster than the available engines of awk, Perl, or Python. so i downloaded the code and did the usual sudo make install thing. however, that action had seemingly done little more than adding /usr/local/include/re2/re2.h to my system. there seemed to be some `*.a file in addition, but then what is it with this *.a extension? i would like to use re2 from Python (preferrably Python 3.1) and was excited to see files like make_unicode_groups.py in the distro (maybe just used during the build process?). those however were not deployed on my machine. how can i use re2 from Python?

However when I try to create a song I get the following error:No action responded to 1. • Bi-directional communication with 1 socket - how to deal with collisions?

  Hi, I have one app. that consists of "Manager" and "Worker". Currently, the worker always initiates the connection, says something to the manager, and the manager will send the response. Since there is a LOT of communication between the Manager and the Worker, I'm considering to have a socket open between the two and do the communication. I'm also hoping to initiate the interaction from both sides - enabling the manager to say something to the worker whenever it wants. However, I'm a little confused as to how to deal with "collisions". Say, the manager decides to say something to the worker, and at the same time the worker decides to say something to the manager. What will happen? How should such situation be handled? P.S. I plan to use Netty for the actual implementation. Thank you very much in advance!

• How to get started with embedded systems in the airline or submarine industries?

  Hi, Not 100% sure how to frame this question but here goes... I currently work as a Rails developer but want to work on more substancial / "meaty" projects and have always been very interested in embedded systems, especially systems that run on aircraft and especially submarines.....I know strange combination. I have been doing some searching & found lockheed martin produces a lot of underwater systems for various navys around the world e.g. http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/nssn/ However, there is very little information about what software is used within these systems, what OS's they use or anything else "technical", presume there is a lot of C / C++ involved but that is just a guess... so its hard to know where to even begin learning what is required to potential work in these areas. Just wondering if anyone has any experiance working with or more information about embeddeed systems in either the airline (onboard flight systems) or especially submarine systems? Thanks!

  I would assume that this question would have been asked in different ways already, but I could not find one so posting it. Sorry if its a repetition The basic idea which I am trying to explore is to design a common Ajax framework/API for our application. The main requirement is to have a common framework in the product which every module in the application can call whenever it needs to provide Ajax behavior. We basically have a page based application and not everything would be Ajax for sure. Mostly it will be smaller pieces of work which Ajax will handle. We have used GWT and it works great. But we have some constraints because of which certain areas in the application need to build standard jsp and html pages only I know little bit about dwr and it looks very promising (as even answered by some people). I wanted to know what are the other possible frameworks like dwr which I can evaluate too, before making the decision

• View artifacts leaking into the model of MVC

  In an ASP.NET MVC application (which has very little chance of having its view technology ported to something non-HTML, but whose functional requirements evolve weekly,) how much HTML should ideally be allowed to be directly represented in the Model? I might come across as a design bigot for this, but I regard it as bad practice to allow any view constructs to "leak" into the model in an MVC application (and vice versa). For example, a Model that represents an item you're about to purchase should know nothing about the HTML check box that says "add giftwrap/message", nor should it know about any HTML drop down lists for payment card types. Conversely the View shouldn't be doing work like figuring out button text by translating keys into values (by looking in resource files.)

• How new is @font-face, and what do I need to know before I add it to a website?

  I started getting into reading design blogs a little while ago, and it seemed that @font-face got really popular sometime late last year, or something like that, because I was under the impression that it was a new emerging feature of the web. But then I saw that Internet Explorer has had it since IE4 (with some conversion). So is it common to see @font-face online nowadays? Sould I have anything in mind with respect to accessibility, legality, or rendering before I do something like this? I saw that Hulu.com renders fonts with Canvas and a javascript called "cufon."

• PHP, MVC, 404 - How can I redirect to 404?

  I'm trying to build my own MVC as a practice and learning experience. "/$page.php" ) ) { include "$page.php"; } else { header("HTTP/1.0 404 Not Found"); } } ?> My problem here is, I can't use header to send to a 404 because the headers have been send already. Should I just redirect to a 404.html or is there a better way? Feel free to critique what I have so far (it's very little). I would love suggestions and ideas. Thanks!

• Nicely printing/showing a binary tree in Haskell

  I have a tree data type: data Tree a b = Branch b (Tree a b) (Tree a b) | Leaf a ...and I need to make it an instance of Show, without using deriving. I have found that nicely displaying a little branch with two leaves is easy: instance (Show a, Show b) => Show (Tree a b) where show (Leaf x) = show x show (Branch val l r) = " " ++ show val ++ "\n" ++ show l ++ " " ++ show r But how can I extend a nice structure to a tree of arbitrary size? It seems like determining the spacing would require me to know just how many leaves will be at the very bottom (or maybe just how many leaves there are in total) so that I can allocate all the space I need there and just work 'up.' I would probably need to call a size function. I can see this being workable, but is that making it harder than it is?

• Yet another C# Deadlock Debugging Question

  Hi All, I have a multi-threaded application build in C# using VS2010 Professional. It's quite a large application and we've experienced the classing GUI cross-threading and deadlock issues before, but in the past month we've noticed the appears to lock up when left idle for around 20-30 minutes. The application is irresponsive and although it will repaint itself when other windows are dragged in front of the application and over it, the GUI still appears to be locked... interstingly (unlike if the GUI thread is being used for a considerable amount of time) the Close, Maximise and minimise buttons are also irresponsive and when clicked the little (Not Responding...) text is not displayed in the title of the application i.e. Windows still seems to think it's running fine. If I break/pause the application using the debugger, and view the threads that are running. There are 3 threads of our managed code that are running, and a few other worker threads whom the source code cannot be displayed for. The 3 threads that run are: The main/GUI thread A thread that loops indefinitely A thread that loops indefinitely If I step into threads 2 and 3, they appear to be looping correctly. They do not share locks (even with the main GUI thread) and they are not using the GUI thread at all. When stepping into the main/GUI thread however, it's broken on Application.Run... This problem screams deadlock to me, but what I don't understand is if it's deadlock, why can't I see the line of code the main/GUI thread is hanging on? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Let me know if you need more information... Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! Much appreciated! I've marked the answer that solved my initial problem of determining where on the main/UI thread the application hangs (I handn't turned off the "Enable Just My Code" option). The overall issue I was experiencing was indeed Deadlock, however. After obtaining the call-stack and popping the top half of it into Google I came across this which explains exactly what I was experiencing... http://timl.net/ This references a lovely guide to debugging the issue... http://www.aaronlerch.com/blog/2008/12/15/debugging-ui/ This identified a control I was constructing off the GUI thread. I did know this, however, and was marshalling calls correctly, but what I didn't realise was that behind the scenes this Control was subscribing to an event or set of events that are triggered when e.g. a Windows session is unlocked or the screensaver exits. These calls are always made on the main/UI thread and were blocking when it saw the call was made on the incorrect thread. Kim explains in more detail here... http://krgreenlee.blogspot.com/2007/09/onuserpreferencechanged-hang.html In the end I found an alternative solution which did not require this Control off the main/UI thread. That appears to have solved the problem and the application no longer hangs. I hope this helps anyone who's confronted by a similar problem. Thanks again to everyone on here who helped! Roo -----------------------------------------------------SOLUTION II-------------------------------------------------- Aren't threading issues delightful...you think you've solved it, and a month down the line it pops back up again. I still believe the solution above resolved an issue that would cause simillar behaviour, but we encountered the problem again. As we spent a while debugging this, I thought I'd update this question with our (hopefully) final solution: The problem appears to have been a bug in the Infragistics components in the WinForms 2010.1 release (no hot fixes). We had been running from around the time the freeze issue appeared (but had also added a bunch of other stuff too). After upgrading to WinForms 2010.3, we've yet to reproduce the issue (deja vu). See my question here for a bit more information: 'http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4077822/net-4-0-and-the-dreaded-onuserpreferencechanged-hang'. Hans has given a nice summary of the general issue. • How to analyse contents of binary serialization stream?

  I'm using binary serialization (BinaryFormatter) as a temporary mechanism to store state information in a file for a relatively complex (game) object structure; the files are coming out much larger than I expect, and my data structure includes recursive references - so I'm wondering whether the BinaryFormatter is actually storing multiple copies of the same objects, or whether my basic "number of objects and values I should have" arithmentic is way off-base, or where else the excessive size is coming from. Searching on stack overflow I was able to find the specification for Microsoft's binary remoting format: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc236844(PROT.10).aspx What I can't find is any existing viewer that enables you to "peek" into the contents of a binaryformatter output file - get object counts and total bytes for different object types in the file, etc; I feel like this must be my "google-fu" failing me (what little I have) - can anyone help? This must have been done before, right??

• Slider with keypress control bugs when keys pressed to quickly.

• Why the macros in Objective-C / Cocoa?

  I'm coming from a place without macros (Java/Python/C#/Scala) so perhaps my perspective is distorted but... Why are macros used in Cocoa? Two that spring to mind are NSLocalizedString and NSAssert (and STAssert). Would it be so hard / unsuitable to make them functions (which could be inlined)? I suppose I find them a little bizarre as an unnecessary throw-back to C (and yes, I am familiar with the pedigree of Obj-C). Is it just something that was done back in the day or is there a specific reason?

• Corba sequence<octet> a lot slower than using a socket

  I have a corba releated question. In my Java app I use typedef sequence Data; Now I played around with this Data vector. If I am right with the Corba specification sequence will either be converted to xs:base64Binary or xs:hexBinary. It should be an Opaque type and so it should not use any marshalling. I tried different idl styles: void Get(out Data d); Data Get(); but what I see is that moving the data using Corba is a lot slower than using a socket directly. I am fine with a little overhead but it looks for me like tha data is still marshalled. Do I need to somehow configure my orb to suppress the marshalling or did I miss something.

• How do I prove to a client/advertiser that my site's analytics numbers are what I say they are?

  I have been asked to provide recommendations on "Verified Analytics" for the next iteration of my company's site. Verified to mean that when we sell ad space, it's based on a number of page-views, and the people who buy that space want a way to verify that the numbers we give them are the actual numbers we're delivering. I have turned to The Google and the only services I can find for this sort of thing revolve around Google Analytics and the sale of a domain name. I export my analytics numbers to a PDF, have Google email the PDF to my auctioneer, and they look for signs of tampering. If no signs of tampering are found they put a little "Verified" badge on the domain auction. (Here) Other than this, and something similar on another domain sales site, I haven't found anything like what I've been asked to find. Currently we are using Google Analytics, however I've been also asked to recommend a replacement for that based on the ability to be verified. I'd rather just stick with Google Analytics since we also use Google for advertising.

• How can I get a fixed-position menu like slashdot's comment filtration menu

  Slashdot has a little widget that allows you to tweak your comment threshold to filter out down-modded comments. It will be in one place if you scroll to the top of the page, and as you scroll down, at some point, where its original home is about to scroll off the page, it will switch to fixed position, and stay on your screen. (To see an example, click here.) My question is, how can I accomplish the same effect of having a menu be in one place when scrolled up, and switch to fixed position as the user scrolls down? I know this will involve a combination of CSS and javascript. I'm not necessarily looking for a full example of working code, but what steps will my code need to go through?

• Is it possible to have a sound play before/during the splash screen?

  My app takes a few seconds to load and I have a splash screen. Once "viewDidLoad" I have a little sound play. I feel that the sound would be in better use if it started playing when the splash screen popped up. Is it possible to have a sound start before/during the splash screen? • MySQL triggers cannot update rows in same table the trigger is assigned to. Suggested workaround?

  MySQL doesn't currently support updating rows in the same table the trigger is assigned to since the call could become recursive. Does anyone have suggestions on a good workaround/alternative? Right now my plan is to call a stored procedure that performs the logic I really wanted in a trigger, but I'd love to hear how others have gotten around this limitation. Edit: A little more background as requested. I have a table that stores product attribute assignments. When a new parent product record is inserted, I'd like the trigger to perform a corresponding insert in the same table for each child record. This denormalization is necessary for performance. MySQL doesn't support this and throws: Can't update table 'mytable' in stored function/trigger because it is already used by statement which invoked this stored function/trigger. A long discussion on the issue on the MySQL forums basically lead to: Use a stored proc, which is what I went with for now. Thanks in advance!
