• HP G61 Laptop wont boot- display stays off, caps and num lock indicators blink repeatedly

  I had my HP G61 laptop running in sleep for a while. When I came back to it about a half-hour later, it was no longer in sleep mode - the power light and the Wi-Fi indicator light were on (I keep Wi-Fi off becuase I use a wired connection) - but nothing was showing on screen. In fact, the display wasn't even turned on. So I let it sit for about 10 minutes but nothing happened. I did a force shut down and rebooted. Instead of a normal boot, the display didnt turn on, the Wi-Fi indicator was off, and the Caps Lock and Num Lock lights just blinked repeatedly. On the external keyboard i use, none of the light indicators were blinking or even on. I tried force shut-down again 10 times, then unplugged all connections except for the power cable (my laptop battery dosent hold a charge for more than 2 minutes, so I always must have a wall connection) and tried to boot again but still nothing happened. I unplugged the battery and even then nothing happened. I also tried booting with the disk drive open, and then with it closed again. On the time it was closed, I was able to successfully boot into Windows, but recieved a "Windows did not shut-down sucessfully" notice. Does anybody know why this may have happened? My PC's specs: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit 4GB of physical RAM, 8GB of vRAM (on a flash drive) AMD Vision x64 processor (don't know any other specs about it) ATI Radeon graphics card, 392 MB DVD-R/W lightscribe drive 2 External hard-disks (first one is 1.5TB, second one is 1TB) custom boot-screen and boot-annimation Standard BIOS apps running before sleep: firefox 10.4 itunes 10.6 adobe photoshop extended CS5.1 rockstar games social club (running in background) microsoft powerpoint 2010 professional edition google chrome I was NOT running Aero or any fancy themes - I was using the normal windows classic theme. I have a desktop icon manager application called Stardock Fences that was also running (it runs as a service/process).

• Ways to have audio output without wires

  I'm trying to find a way of using my home speakers/amp without actually having to connect them. There are two laptops that use them normally (so I don't like changing the connection all the time) and I'd rather move the speakers to a place that's away from the couch. I'm not sure how to do this though... The options I can think of are: some kind of wireless jack-jack connection finally getting a media server Unfortunately I can't find any good product for the first solution. I've seen some headphones which have the receiver integrated and a separate transmitted, so in general the idea is already out there, just not the way I need ;) I've seen also http://www.miccus.com/products/blubridge-mini-jack, but I'd have to have a compatible receiver which I can't find on its own (maybe there's some application that the media server could use?). As far as media server goes... many of the plug servers look really interesting, but I'm not sure how to create an audio output and how to redirect the input really. None of the plug servers I've seen so far advertises the option of audio output jack port. I think this part could be fixed by getting one with an usb port and a separate cheap usb soundcard. I hope that input can be sorted out in some rather simple way. I've got Linux running on both laptops so I hope that would be possible to configure jack/pulse/whatever to use the remote endpoint, or even write a simple local-/dev/dsp:network:media-server-/dev/dsp forwarder. So the main question is... are there better ways? Are there any out of the box solutions? Or maybe this was already done by someone and described somewhere?

• RAID administration in Debian Lenny

  I've got an old box that I don't want to scrap yet because it's got a nice working 5-disk RAID assembly. I want to create 2 arrays: RAID 1 with 2 disks and RAID 5 with the other 3 disks. The RAID card is Intel SRCU31L. I can create the RAID 1 volume in the console that you access with Ctrl+C at startup. But it only allows for creation of one volume so I can't do anything with the 3 remaining disks. I installed Debian Lenny on the RAID 1 volume and it worked out nicely. What utilites could I now use to create/manage the RAID volumes in Debian Linux? I installed the raidutils package but get an error when trying to fetch a list: #raidutil -L controller or #raidutil -L physical # raidutil -L controller osdOpenEngine : 11/08/110-18:16:08 Fatal error, no active controller device files found. Engine connect failed: Open What could I try to get this thing working? Can you suggest any other tools? • Ubuntu 10.04 freezing and Ctrl + Alt + Backspace does nothing but music keeps playing

  I'm having intermittent problems where the screen will freeze in Ubuntu. I've tried using Ctrl + Alt + Backspace to restart the X-server, though this does nothing. When the freeze occurs, there's a small square of black dashes around the mouse pointer - maybe 1 inch in size. These dashes look a lot like a 2d barcode. The rest of the screen looks normal, but I can't move the mouse and none of the keyboard shortcuts work to do anything. However, music that I begin playing before the freeze continues to play, which seems to indicate it hasn't stalled up completely. I've noticed a similar freezing problem when I'm using Windows 7. That is, I see the same barcode like dashes around the mouse pointer when it freezes up. So I'm guessing it's either a driver or hardware problem. I thought if it was a hardware problem though, the whole computer might stop working (i.e. music would stop playing)? The video card I am using is an Nvidia, and I believe it's in the 7600 range. In Ubuntu I have the drivers for the card set to the latest available (proprietary). Ideally I'd like to be able to continue using the proprietary drivers. Is there any known issues with the drivers for this model graphics card, or has anyone experienced the same problem and knows how to fix it?

• How to configure IIS 7.5 to allow special chars in Url for ASP.NET 3.5?

  I'm trying to configure my IIS 7.5 to allow specials chars in the url for ASP.NET. This is important to support wide-spread legacy url's on a new system. Sample url: http://mydomain.com/FileWith%inTheName.html This would be encoded in the url and requested as http://mydomain.com/FileWith25%inTheName.html This simply works, when creating a new web in IIS 7.5, placing a file with the percentage sign in the file name in the web root and pointing the browser to it. This does not work, however, when the web site is an ASP.NET application. ASP.NET always returns a 400.0 - Bad Request error in the WindowsAuthentication module from the StaticFile handler, when pointing to that url. It however displays the requested url correctly and also resolves correctly to the correct physical file (the information from the field 'Physical Path' from the Server error page points to the physically available file). There are hints on how to enable this, so I followed the instructions on these websites step by step: http://dirk.net/2008/06/09/ampersand-the-request-url-in-iis7/ http://adorr.net/2010/01/configure-iis-to-accept-url-with-special-characters.html The second one actually sums up the information from the first post and adds some more information about x64 systems (we're running x64) and on an additional web.config change for this. So, what do I have to do in addition to the settings described in above posts, to support the legacy url's which contain percentage characters? Additional info: Application Pool mode is integrated. Push after some days. No idea anyone?

• OC'ing a Sapphire 7950, problems with memory clock

  I bought a new rig with sapphire radeon 7950 flex w/ boost. Good scores initially in 3dmark 11, around 7300 stock. Problem is, as soon as i start overclocking, issues arise. the core clock is at 860, but rises to 925 with boost applied in pressured situations. So all the OC tools are showing 925 as base clock for some reason. Ocing the core clock has been no problem though, got up to 1200 pretty stable, but only an incremental increase in 3dmark 11, to 7600 from 7300, which is worrying. The real trouble starts when i start touching the memory clock. As soon as i touch it even by 1 point up to 1251mhz, the performance goes way down. suddenly i score under 5000 graphics in 3dmark11, no matter if its 1251hz or 1500hz. Ive tried adjusting every other parameter, different tools (sapphiretrixx, catalyst, afterburner) all still the same. Tried upping the power, still same. Where is the issue here?

• Windows XP Setup Fails to Recognize USB Floppy after formatting AHCI disk

  I am attempting to install Windows XP Professional x64 onto a HP EliteBook 8540w. I have downloaded both the latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers and the Intel Storage Matrix drivers that are listed on HPs website and copied the drivers over to a floppy disk (two separate floppies, one for each version of the drivers.) Booting to my WinXP Pro x64 install CD, I go through the F6 process, load the driver and am able to see my HDD, delete, create and format partitions on it. When I go to continue the install, after checking the disk, the system asks me to enter the disk labeled "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" and press enter to continue. Nothing happens at this point when I press enter. This happens if I use the latest drivers or the older drivers. We have created a slipstreamed install CD using nLite that has the AHCI drivers integrated, which installs fine. However, we have identified a number of issues with the system that I believe are side-effects of using nLite for the slipstreaming and I am attempting to verify that. I have researched this issue and found a few examples of others having the same problem, but no solution. The USB floppy is a Lacie branded floppy, connecting it to a working XP workstation shows it to be the Y-E Data USB floppy drive that is supposedly 100% compatible with XP per MS KB 916196.

• How come my Intel 520 180GB SSD performs extremely poorly?

  I recently installed a new Intel 520 series 180GB SSD in my brand new MacBook Pro. The system is as follows: Model: MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2011 (MacBookPro8,2) Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB Software: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 Main Drive Bay: Intel 520-series 180GB SATA-3 (6GB/s negotiated link) SSD (Firmware: 400i) [80GB free] Optical Bay: Toshiba 5400 RPM 750GB SATA-2 HDD Trim: Enabled (according to Trim Enabler App) And here are the speeds I'm getting: Read: 412 MB/s Write: 186 MB/s What have I done wrong? Results expected: Read/write both 500MB/s I have seen benchmarks with lesser SSD:s (SATA-2 even) outperform my write-speeds by far. Also, Intel 520 SSD:s are supposed to be the top class of SSD:s. Trim Enabler report: This looks a bit odd compared to screenshots from their site: These is the defined S.M.A.R.T attributes (taken from Intel): And here are my S.M.A.R.T attributes read using smartctl tool from smartmontools: They don't seem very compatible. I'm going to try and look for a S.M.A.R.T attributes reader tool for OS X which might support Intel 520 series.

• What can I do to prevent system power downs?

  Yesterday I was given my brother's old laptop - core i7, 2.67GHz, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Win7 64 bit. It's a Sony Vaio Z11. Approx 18 months old. When running something computationally intensive, the fan starts up and after about 30 secs it just powers itself down with no warning. I guess it is overheating. There is nothing in the event logs to suggest what is causing it - the only thing I see is "the last system shutdown was unexpected" or something similar. This is a problem for me because I use a lot of number crunching apps, which pretty much makes it useless to me. I would like to know if there is anything I can do, other than the obvious things I've done already - open up and clean out dust, re-install the OS. According to my brother, this problem started about 6 months ago when it was already outside warranty. If it's just used for simple things - web browsing, word processing etc, the problem does not occur. Any ideas for what I can do to fix this ? Update: I found that the laptop has 2 hardware settings for graphics: Speed and Stamina - the Speed setting seems to use an nvidia GEforce GT 330M, while the Stamina setting uses an Intel chipset. With the setting on Speed, I can hear the fan the whole time, and the system powers down after a short while (5-10 mins) even just doing basic tasks (browsing this site for example), but doesn't shut down if I just leave it switched on. In this mode it also sometimes just freezes the screen and I have to power off myself. However on Stamina setting it only powers down when doing number crunching and never freezes the screen.

• Weird PCI bug: lots of missed packets, or data comes in "bursts"

  I have an ABIT KN9 motherboard. It has one PCI-e x16 slot, three PCI-e x4 slots and two legacy PCI. My problem is with the legacy PCI (which I shall just call "PCI".) I currently have an Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT (a low end card) installed in the x16 slot and a TV card in PCI #1; the x4 slots are unused, as is PCI #2. I plan to upgrade the graphics card soon, the current card was spare. I sometimes install a USB expander in PCI #2 but it causes a lot of problems - see below. The problem is under Linux (Ubuntu 10.10, Linux 2.6.35-22-generic), but probably under all operating systems (I have not yet been able to test Windows, but I suspect it will do the same as the problems occur on the BIOS/POST side too, e.g. when using a USB keyboard on the expander the keyboard will not work at all) PCI has an enourmous delay, and packets arrive in large chunks. For example, when using the USB expander, my USB mouse lags and jumps in large steps every second or so, while using the motherboard USB does not present this problem. My TV card will only do one or two frames per second, and the program (xawtv) usually times out and crashes. In dmesg, I'm getting messages like: bttv0: timeout: drop=74, irq=154/100476, risc=31f6256c, bits: VSYNC HSYNC OFLOW RISCI for my TV card, and similar timeout issues for my USB expander with a mouse. I received the motherboard, processor and RAM second hand and have only just got around to building it, so I don't know if this problem has always existed, or if it's a result of my set up. If anyone has any hints or solutions it would be appreciated - this is kind of a show-stopper for me.

• What laptop would be recommended for video-editing or transcoding to blu-ray?

  I'm looking for a machine (has to be a laptop) reasonably fast enough to handle editing/transcoding/rendering to Blu-ray disc of full true HD 1080p (1920x1080) video from a Samsung R10 camcorder - MPEG4 25fps (not the Sony-Panasonic AVCHD format): To be able to browse through the footage (say, quarter screen is fine for monitoring) and do simple edits - cut out bad bits, add titles, fades, nothing too fancy To be able to burn the footage in 1920x1080p 24p (twenty-four) fps to blu-ray, probably don't mind if I have to leave it for a few hours, or even overnight, as long as its not still running in the morning or takes days. I ALREADY have an external USB 2.0 LG BE06LU10 blu-ray burner. Does quad core make much difference? Or would Dual-core suffice for the above? NVidia because of CUDA for increased speed. What software today can take advantage of this? Which graphics card do I need? So far I've found Dell/Alienware to be well-specified, having a 5yr old Dell laptop that still runs well, albeit slow by today's standards, gives me a good impression. My concerns are too much fan-noise and budget and some Dell Precision Laptops exceed 1500 pounds. Thoughts?

• Is there any way to synchronize Outlook RSS Feeds with BlackBerry?

  Does anyone know how I can view the contents of my Outlook 2007 RSS Feeds from a corporate-issued BlackBerry? Our Inbox and Calendar are already integrated with corporate exchange servers but it looks like nobody cares too much about the RSS Feeds. Is there some setting on my Blackberry or in Outlook I could possibly tweak to include these updates? I know there are many standalone RSS readers available for blackberry (Google Reader for example) but I mention Outlook RSS Feeds specifically in my question because I am subscribing to a number of RSS feeds I've setup on my intranet for various version control systems that would be inaccessible to an external RSS reader. It seems like I might have to setup some sort of email commit notifications if I want anything from my blackberry but I much prefer the 'pull' method of an RSS feed viewer over receiving streams of emails. Please feel free to suggest any alternatives! Edit: I've additionally tried moving my "SVN Repository" folder directly into my Mailbox instead of keeping it as a child of the RSS Feeds folder. This allows me to view the SVN Repository folder on my blackberry where previously the RSS Feeds folder and all children were hidden but unfortunately it never seems to get populated with the items that are displaying in Outlook. I've even made a fresh commit to make sure that the SVN Repository folder still works correctly in Outlook from outside the RSS Feeds folder but no luck on the BlackBerry end of things. • Memory modules not running at rated speeds.

  Hi all, I'm having some odd memory issues with my build. Here are my specs right now: QDI Superb 4 motherboard Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4GHz (512KB L2, 533MHz FSB) 3x 256MB PC2100 DDR266 RAM 16MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro AGP Seagate 80GB IDE HDD Generic USB 2.0 PCI Generic Modem PCI Bestec 250W PSU To be even more specific, here are the current brands and models of each module: Kingston KVR266X64C25/256 Samsung PC2100U-25331-Z SMART SM5643285D4N0CHM0H Supposedly, they are all PC2100 266MHz modules with a latency of 2.5. Looking in Speccy, the Kingston module is somehow running at a speed of PC2300 ~284MHz. I've never overclocked RAM at all as I don't know how to. However, when I first started the computer, I had the SMART module in place first and then reset the BIOS settings, including the integrated overclocking options. However, this still doesn't explain why the Kingston module runs at a higher speed than the SMART and Samsung module. Why is it like this? On a side note, where could I find the motherboard manual for the QDI Superb 4? Thanks in advance.

• DXVA and ATI.... what am I missing?

  ATI Radeon HD3650 ffdshow (the one comes with CCCP 2010-10 AND the latest from Free-codecs site) Catalyst 10.12 Latest DirectX, Windows 7 HP x64 If I try to play it simply, the player (mpc-hc) won't use the acceleration. If I disable checks, I get artifacts. Back then it worked perfectly with my Intel and ATI too (Lenovo ThinkPad T500, switchable graphics). This only appeared recently. What should I do? What am I missing? If possible, I don't really want to downgrade drivers (waaa ATI drivers s.ck ... sorry but.. honestly), because the older one got a buggy DP driver so my external display gets a totally wrong resolution. • Desktop PC does not power up on power button

  When I press the power button on my desktop, it does not power up completely. Before I press the power button, I see lights on the motherboard. Everything is normal. On power button press, the fans on the cpu, graphics card and motherboard start to spin a little for a second or two and then they stop. No beeps during this process. It has been doing this for a while now but it used to start up after some trials. Once it starts up, I have NO issues at all like random shutdowns so it is not an issue with OS. I'm just guessing here but it seems as if the PSU (Antec TP2-550ATX) is dying out and does not have enough power now - just a guess. It's an old desktop assembled in 2005 but I have maintained it well. Any ideas? Please help. Thanks. Below is the complete configuration. • SQL Server 2008: Getting Login failed for user "Domain\User". Failed to open the explicitly specified database [CLIENT: IP.ADD.RR.ESS]

  This is a very similar issue to " SQL Server 2008 login problem with ASP.NET application: Failed to open the explicitly specified database " which unfortunately seems to have gone unsolved. My issue here is subtly different. Firstly the account failing login is not 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE' - it's an actual domain account. Secondly, there are two machines involved - I gathered from the first question it was a single machine running both the IIS and SQL instances. The application which is trying to connect to the database is an ASP.NET one running on another server (if that makes any different, I'm not sure it does.) The ConnectionString being used in the web.config for the application is : data source=MySQLServer;initial catalog=MyDatabase;integrated security=sspi; And the Application Pool is set to NetworkService for Identity. So - in the web app, I get the following error : Cannot open database "MyDatabase" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'MyDomain\WebServerMachineName$' In the SQL Server logs I see : Login failed for user 'MyDomain\WebServerMachineName$'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database. [CLIENT: Web.Server.IP.Address] Running this bit of SQL against the database in question : USE [MyDatabase] GO SELECT SDP.name AS [User Name], SDP.type_desc AS [User Type], UPPER(SDPS.name) AS [Database Role] FROM sys.database_principals SDP INNER JOIN sys.database_role_members SDRM ON SDP.principal_id=SDRM.member_principal_id INNER JOIN sys.database_principals SDPS ON SDRM.role_principal_id = SDPS.principal_id Gets me this result : MyDomain\WebServerMachineName$ WINDOWS_USER DB_DDLADMIN MyDomain\WebServerMachineName$ WINDOWS_USER DB_DATAREADER MyDomain\WebServerMachineName$ WINDOWS_USER DB_DATAWRITER Which appears to me to indicate I've got the permissions right. • apache using mod_auth_kerb always asks for the password twice

  (Debian Squeeze) I'm trying to set apache up to use Kerberos authentication to allow AD users to log in. It is working, but prompts the user twice for a username and password, with the first time being ignored (no matter what is put it in.) Only the second prompt includes the AuthName string from the config (i.e.: the first windows is a generic username/password one, the second includes the title "Kerberos Login") I'm not worried about integrated windows authentication working at this stage, I just want users to be able to login with their AD account so we don't need to set up a second repository of user accounts. How do I fix this to eliminate that first useless prompt? • Is there a way to run CUDA applications with the CUDA device being a secondary adapter?

  I've been trying to run a CUDA program on a remote computer which has Windows 7 installed. The GPU is GeForce GTX 480. One of the problems I've been facing is that, the computer has two adapters, 1) Standard VGA Adapter 2) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Even though this shows in the device manager. The desktop uses the standard VGA Adapter. I'm assuming this is because the Standard VGA is the primary adapter. Also the device manager shows that the monitor is connected to the standard VGA Adapter. In this scenario if i try to run any CUDA application it fails to recognise a CUDA capable device. Is it necessary for the NVIDIA adapter to be the primary one? Or is there any way to use CUDA when the graphics card is a secondary adapter. I've seen a few posts in the NVIDIA forums on this before, one suggests using another low cost NVIDIA card as the primary adapter, but that is currently not an option. I couldn't find any other solutions. Thanks I tried running the deviceQuery test from the NVIDIA GPU Computing Samples. This was the result i obtained CUDA Device Query (Runtime API) version (CUDART static linking) cudaGetDeviceCount FAILED CUDA Driver and Runtime version may be mismatched FAILED The driver version I'm using is 263.06. The CUDA version is 3.2 I ran the same test on my desktop which also has windows 7 and a GeForce GTX 465. The CUDA toolkit version is 3.2. The driver version was the same and the test passed, although it failed with an older driver.

• How do I stop panning on a monitor that supports a specific resolution?

  Hi all, I've been battling this for a few days now. Any and all help is appreciated. I have a planar monitor with a native res of 1280x1024. At one point, I had used PowerStrip to override "something" and set the res to 1600x1200, and it worked great. I then installed new intel graphics drivers for my 86895g (or w/e model) video card, which screwed up whatever settings I had. If I set it to 1600x1200 this time, it would set the res correctly, but give me a 1280x1024 viewport and the screen would pan when the mouse got to the edges of the screen. Absolutely not useful. Ok, so I was limited to 1280x1024 now. W/e. Now...enter new video card with two video ports. I have two monitors now and the latest nVidia drivers. I decide to try to get dual 1600x1200 going...ended up screwing the original monitor up so much now that it's at 1280x1024, with a 1024x768 viewport and panning! Absolutely not usable now. So what I need, and I can't seem to find on any forums, is help doing one or more of the following: Clearing out all monitor/edid info out of the windows registry without corrupting the registry. Actually correctly override the EDID values and get my sweet res back. Some other way of getting back to at least dual 1280x1024 with NO panning. Note: My device manager shows 4 monitors for some reason. My registry shows entries for all sorts of monitors that have been hooked up to the machine over the years. It's making it difficult to debug. Experience with PowerStrip would be helpful. I've been mucking with Phoenix EDID designer and MonInfo as well, but I'm stumbling around in the dark with these. • Build suggestion for mini itx server [on hold]

  I am looking to create a home server and since there does not seem to be a nice ready made one to purchase, i thought of building a mini itx one. I am not familiar with the best hardware/case to pick and therefore i thought i would ask for your experience. I will most probably install a simple linux distro, probably Debian and most probably without a desktop environment as well. Therefore, I am not looking for the best graphics card, though a decent one is preferred for sure. I would say that the most important thing is that the case/hardware play well with each other and the machine has decent specs ( i think something like 8gb RAM and 1TB hdd is most probably my most important things). I understand that this question can be closed as subjective, but it would be a great help for me if some of you guys who have been doing a similar build, can suggest something. I tried to find a stack exchange variant for the question, but it seems that this one more closely relates to the subject. But I will definitely understand it if people close it due to being subjective in nature. If you can maybe move it somewhere or so, please feel free to do so. Thank you for your time :)

• When machine is turned on, only the fan runs

  Hi, I have an issue slightly similar to this one posted here, http://superuser.com/questions/127016/troubleshooting-monitor-never-turns-on-system-fans-running-dvd-rom-does-not-op My configuration is as follows: EPOX 9NPA+ Ultra motherboard AMD Athlon 64 CPU Corsair 2 x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM 1 DVD RW drive and 1 CD ROM Drive SATA 250 GB Hard drive 400W Power supply EVGA 256MB graphics card I have had this configuration for about four years. Last month, I started having issues in starting the machine. It wouldn't start when I press the ON button in the front of the case. So I used to pull out the power cord and plug it back in and then switch on in the front, and it used to work fine. And then one fine day, when I plugged in the power cord at the back, even without switching on the power-on button at the front, I saw that the fan at the back was running. So I opened the system. Then I could see that all the fans inside were running. I replaced the power supply. No luck there. Then I replaced the CMOS battery. Again nothing improved. Even when I removed all the cards and memory, I still get one short beep. That's it. Any idea how to proceed on this? Anything else could be checked? I want to confirm if this is a motherboard failure, before proceeding to replace it.

• Wireless disconnects every 30 minutes

  I have had a look through all the related questions and I get the feeling my problem is unique. My wireless connection disconnects every 30 minutes, for maybe 1 to 3 seconds. If I am browsing the web while it happens, I get the page cannot be displayed error message. I have checked the event logs as I was curious to know if there was anything in there. There is. Event 8033: BROWSER - The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{B919CC30-25A9-45DD-A09F-549A6262FC9E} because a master browser was stopped. Reported exactly every 30 minutes which coincides with my wireless problem. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, 32-bit. My wireless is Realtek RTL8187 integrated into a ASUS P5K-E/Wifi motherboard. It is on a workgroup and has never been on a domain. This problem does not affect any other computers. Wireless reception is great, and I have ensured that the wireless unit is transmitting on a frequency not used by any nearby wireless basestations. How can I fix this pesky problem?

• Distortion problem with Creative audio equalizer

  Hi, I have a problem with the Creative Console EQ, I don't know if it's fixable or not (is the EQ software or hardware on these cards?). Basically, I have enormous distortion with certain sounds in the 30 - 125 hz range. When this happens I get some sort of "frrzzzz" (sorry, I'm french and don't really know the correct english word for that) on top of the original sound. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy SE. I'm using the Daniel_K drivers, on Windows 7 Profesionnal x64. All the effects are disabled except EQ. Steps to reproduce Put the card in 24bit/96khz mode. The problem is also present with 16bit/48khz but seems to be less audible. In the Creative Console, use the following EQ: (full size) Play this sound at a reasonably high volume. You should hear distortion on the two "booms". Especially the second one. Disable Creative EQ. Play the sound in an application with an integrated EQ (e.g. foobar2000, ffdshow) using the same EQ parameters. There is no distortion. Conclusion: the Creative EQ is broken. Is anyone having the same problem? I'm also interested in the results with other Creative cards or even other brands soundcards with a similar EQ feature.

• Finding useful crash-information in Windows 8 Consumer Preview

  I'm currently diving into C# and wanted to play around with the new Metro-styled-applications introduced with Windows 8, so I updated my Windows 7 to Windows 8 Consumer Preview. The problem I'm facing right now is, that the system freezes after 3-5 minutes. It does not take any input from the keyboard or mouse and it does not recover (at least not in less then 10 minutes). Since I have a background in Linux, I'd like to find some information about the cause of the freeze, but I have no idea where to search. I checked the system-logs (under "System Control" - "Management") but they only record that the system was shut down unexpectedly (doe to the face that I held down the power-button to reboot the PC). There is no useful crash-information in there. I don't want to spend hours on randomly reinstalling drivers and doing things that "might help". Isn't there any place I can find some useful information about the freeze? Before you ask: I installed Windows 8 as an updated on my old Windows 7 installation (which worked fine by the way). My hardware fits the minimum requirements (specs can be found here, the MacMini 3,1 model with 2GHz processor). I have updated the graphics-card drivers to the newest Windows 8 drivers from nVidia.

• Samsung laptop randomly shuts down

  I've rewritten this question because it turned into an indecipherable mess. I have a Samsung R560 laptop that is overheating, and shutting itself down under load consistantly. Thank you quickcel for reccomending me Speedfan to monitor my temps. Here they are (Load / Idle): (Ignore "Temp1 and Temp2", whatever sensors they are they'd always random, pretty sure they're broke). The load temperature is after just 5 minites of playing Fallout 3 - another 5 minutes and it (the GPU - 9600M GS) consistantly breaches the mid 90's then shuts down, so it's hard to get a good picture of it. I'm looking for some solution or way to decrease these temperatures, because they seem far too high even idle. I've tried: Opening up the case and clearing of all dust with compressed air. Updating drivers for my Graphics card Have purchased and am using a notebook cooler I don't want to: Undervolt / underclock (defeats the point of having a more expensive card) Use lower power / performance settings (again, i might as well have bought something cheaper) Is there anything else i can try (software or inexpensive hardware) that can help me fix this? Has anybody had a Samsung laptop and knows if this can be sorted under my warranty, and the turnaround time of sending it off (UK?)(it has always ran hotter than it should, but now at 6 months old is getting hot enough to power off)
