• Tailing 'Jobs' with Perl under mod_perl

  Hi everyone, I've got this project running under mod_perl shows some information on a host. On this page is a text box with a dropdown that allows users to ping/nslookup/traceroute the host. The output is shown in the text box like a tail -f. It works great under CGI. When the user requests a ping it would make an AJAX call to the server, where it essentially starts the ping with the output going to a temp file. Then subsequent ajax calls would 'tail' the file so that the output was updated until the ping finished. Once the job finished, the temp file would be removed. However, under mod_perl no matter what I do I can's stop it from creating zombie processes. I've tried everything, double forking, using IPC::Run etc. In the end, system calls are not encouraged under mod_perl. So my question is, maybe there's a better way to do this? Is there a CPAN module available for creating command line jobs and tailing output that will work under mod_perl? I'm just looking for some suggestions. I know I could probably create some sort of 'job' daemon that I signal with details and get updates from. It would run the commands and keep track of their status etc. But is there a simpler way? • Perl, share package variable without Export

  I'm creating a group of Perl scripts, and I would like to have one package store a group of constants. I don't want to export them using Exporter because there will be quite a few and I don't want to pollute the namespace. Since there will be so many, I don't want to require the user to be forced to manually specify which they will be using. I think the best way to just use the packagename::var syntax, however it doesn't seem to be working as I expect it to. • shared memory STL maps

  Hello, I am writing an Apache module in C++. I need to store the common data that all childs need to read as a portion of shared memory. Structure is kind of map of vectors, so I want to use STL map and vectors for it. I have written a shared allocator and a shared manager for the purpose, they work fine for vectors but not for maps, below is the example: typedef vector<CustomersData, SharedAllocator<CustomersData> > CustomerVector; CustomerVector spData; //this one works fine typedef SharedAllocator< pair< const int, CustomerVector > > PairAllocator; typedef map< int, CustomerVector, less<int>, PairAllocator > SharedMap; SharedMap spIndex; //this one doesn't work I get compile time errors when I try to use the second object (spIndex), which are someting like: ../SpatialIndex.h:97: error: '((SpatialIndex*)this)-SpatialIndex::spIndex' does not have class type It looks like the compiler cannot determine a type for SharedMap template type, which is strange in my opinion, it seems to me that all the template parameters have been specified. • What's the best way to develop a debugging window for an ajax ASP.Net MVC application

  While developing my ASP.NET MVC, I have started to see the need for a debugging console window to assist in figuring out what is going right and wrong in my code. I read the last few chapters of the Pro Asp.net MVC book, and the author details how to use http modules to show page load/creation times and linq to sql query logs, both of which I definitely want to be able to see. However, since I am loading a lot of small sections of my page individually with ajax I don't want the debug information right there in the middle of my screen. So the idea I came up with was to have a separate browser window (open-able by a link or some javascript) with a console log, that can contain logged entries both from javascript and from the asp.net mvc run. The former should be relatively easy, but I'm having trouble coming up with a way to log the asp.net information in ajax requests. The direction I have been thinking of going is to create an httpmodule (like the Pro MVC book does), and have that module contain some that append the javascript's log to console calls with the messages. The issue I see with this is finding a way to get the log messages from the controller's action methods to the httpmodule's methods. The only way I see to do this is with a singleton, but I'm not sure if singletons are bad practice for a stateless web application. Furthermore, it seems like if I return json with my ajax calls (instead of pure html) then that won't work at all anyways and unless there is a way to add data to an existing json structure inside the httpmodule. How does everyone else handle this type of debugging in heavily ajax applications? For reference, the javascript library I am using is jquery.

• Iterating through String word at a time in Python

  I have a string buffer of a huge text file. I have to search a given words/phrases in the string buffer. Whats the efficient way to do it ? I tried using re module matches. But As i have a huge text corpus that i have to search through. This is taking large amount of time. Given a Dictionary of words and Phrases. I iterate through the each file, read that into string , search all the words and phrases in the dictionary and increment the count in the dictionary if the keys are found. One small optimization that we thought was to sort the dictionary of phrases/words with the max number of words to lowest. And then compare each word start position from the string buffer and compare the list of words. If one phrase is found, we don search for the other phrases (as it matched the longest phrase ,which is what we want) Can some one suggest how to go about word by word in the string buffer. (Iterate string buffer word by word) ? Also, Is there any other optimization that can be done on this ?

• Binary search in a sorted (memory-mapped ?) file in Java

  I am struggling to port a Perl program to Java, and learning Java as I go. A central component of the original program is a Perl module that does string prefix lookups in a +500 GB sorted text file using binary search (essentially, "seek" to a byte offset in the middle of the file, backtrack to nearest newline, compare line prefix with the search string, "seek" to half/double that byte offset, repeat until found...) I have experimented with several database solutions but found that nothing beats this in sheer lookup speed with data sets of this size. Do you know of any existing Java library that implements such functionality? Failing that, could you point me to some idiomatic example code that does random access reads in text files? Alternatively, I am not familiar with the new (?) Java I/O libraries but would it be an option to memory-map the 500 GB text file (I'm on a 64-bit machine with memory to spare) and do binary search on the memory-mapped byte array? I would be very interested to hear any experiences you have to share about this and similar problems.

What bothers me is that the snippet of code above returns no results; essentially meaning that the way that the query is being executed is wonky. I executed the SQL query (including the set variables with actual values, and it returned the correct number of results). If I modify the query to just be a simple SELECT FROM query (SELECT * FROM poi_table) it returns results. What is going on here?

• Is there a Standard or Best Practice for Perl Progams, as opposed to Perl Modules?

  I've written any number of perl modules in the past, and more than a few stand-alone perl programs, but I've never released a multi-file perl program into the wild before. I have a perl program that is almost at the beta stage and is going to be released open source. It requires a number of data files, as well as some external perl modules -- some I've written myself, and some from CPAN -- that I'll have to bundle with it so as to ensure that someone can just download my program and install it without worrying about hunting for obscure modules. So, it sounds to me like I need to write an installer to copy all the files to standard locations so that a user can easily install everything. The trouble is, I have no idea what the standard practice would be for this. I have found lots of tutorials on perl module standards, but none on perl program standards. Does anyone have any pointers to standard paths, installation proceedures, etc, for perl programs? This is going to be complicated by the fact that the program is multi-platform. I've been testing it in Linux, but its designed to work equally well in Windows.

• Users in database server or database tables

  Hi all, I came across an interesting issue about client server application design. We have this browser based management application where it has many users using the system. So obvisously within that application we have an user management module within it. I have always thought having an user table in the database to keep all the login details was good enough. However, a senior developer said user management should be done in the database server layer if not then is poorly designed. What he meant was, if a user wants to use the application then a user should be created in the user table AND in the database server as a user account as well. So if I have 50 users using my applications, then I should have 50 database server user logins. I personally think having just one user account in the database server for this database was enough. Just grant this user with the allowed privileges to operate all the necessary operation need by the application. The users that are interacting with the application should have their user accounts created and managed within the database table as they are more related to the application layer. I don't see and agree there is need to create a database server user account for every user created for the application in the user table. A single database server user should be enough to handle all the query sent by the application. Really hope to hear some suggestions / opinions and whether I'm missing something? performance or security issues? Thank you very much.

• How does a java web project architecture look like without EJB3 ?

  A friend and I are building a fairly complex website based on java. (PHP would have been more obvious but we chose for java because the educational aspect of this project is important to us) We have already decided to use JSF (with richfaces) for the front end and JPA for the backend and so far we have decided not to use EJB3 for the business layer. The reason we've decided not to use EJB3 is because - and please correct me if I am wrong - if we use EJB3 we can only run it on a full blown java application server like jboss and if we don't use EJB3 we can still run it on a lightweight server like tomcat. We want to keep speed and cost of our future web server in mind. So far i've worked on two JEE projects and both used the full stack with web business logic factories/persistence service entities with every layer a seperate module. Now here is my question, if you dont use EJB3 in the business logic layer. What does the layer look like? Please tell what is common practice when developing java web projects without ejb3? Do you think business logic layer can be thrown out altogether and have business logic in the backing beans? If you keep the layer, do you have all business methods static? Or do you initialize each business class as needed in the backing beans in every session as needed?

  Hello, I'm trying to move from Apache + Passenger to Nginx + passenger on my Ubuntu Lucid Lynx box. When I install passenger, sudo gem install passenger and cd /var/lib/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-2.2.14/bin sudo ./passenger-install-nginx-module everything is fine (no error). Nginx is downloaded / compiled and installed at the same time (when selecting the first option during passenger installation). By default it is installed in /opt/nginx. I end up with the configuration file /opt/nginx/conf/nginx.conf (this conf file was automatically updated with passenger config). The thing I do not understand is that I also have the configuration file /etc/nginx/nginx.conf... what is the purpose of this one when it seems that the conf file in /opt/... is the main one ? When I run /etc/init.d/nginx start, it starts correclty saying that /etc/nginx/nginx.conf is ok... Does it mean that it does not check the other conf file ? I have updated /etc/init.d/nginx script and add /opt/nginx/sbin at the beginning of the PATH and it seems the correct conf file is taken into account. It seems like I have 2 nginx installations where I only relied on passenger to install it... Thanks a lot for your help, I am kind of lost here :) Luc

• Perl WordPress::XMLRPC categories not being set.

  The following code works fine to upload a new post to a WordPress blog but for the life of me I can't seem to get the categories to be set. The categories exist. I've tried all lower case, tried case-matching, tried the slug version. Nothing works. No matter how I try passing the categories, the post gets assigned only to the default category. • How do I use Perl's WWW::Facebook::API to publish to a user's newsfeed?

  We use Facebook Connect on our site in conjunction with the WWW::Facebook::API CPAN module to publish to our users newsfeed when requested by the user. So far we've been able to successfully update the user's status using the following code: use WWW::Facebook::API; my $facebook = WWW::Facebook::API->new( desktop => 0, api_key => $fb_api_key, secret => $fb_secret, session_key => $query->cookie($fb_api_key.'_session_key'), session_expires => $query->cookie($fb_api_key.'_expires'), session_uid => $query->cookie($fb_api_key.'_user') ); my $response = $facebook->stream->publish( message => qq|Test status message|, ); However, when we try to update the code above so we can publish newsfeed stories that include attachments and action links as specified in the Facebook API documentation for Stream.Publish, we have tried about 100 different ways without any success. • Mathematics for Computer Science Students

  To cut a long story short, I am a CS student that has received no formal Post-16 Maths education for years. Right now even my Algebra is extremely rusty and I have a couple of months to shape up my skills. I've got a couple of video lectures in my bookmarks, consisting of: Pre-Calculus Algebra Calculus Probability Introduction to Statistics Differential Equations Linear Algebra My aim as of today is to be able to read the CLRS book Introduction to Algorithms and be able to follow the Mathematical notation in that, as well as being able to confidently read and back-up any arguments written in Mathematical notation. Aside from these video lectures, can anyone recommend any good books to help teach someone wishing to go from a low-foundation level to a more advanced level of Mathematics? Just as a note, I've taken a first-year module in Analytical Modelling, so I understand some of the basic concepts of Discrete Mathematics. EDIT: Just a note to those that are looking to learn Linear Algebra using the Video Lectures I have posted up. • PHP and CURL under Windows 7 64 bits and Apache

  I'm trying to use curl with PHP on my box without any success. My Config : OS : win 7 64 bits, PHP : 5.3.1, Apache : 2.2.14 I was able to use the mysql extension, so the configuration of my php.ini seems fine. But I get and error in Apache log with curl : PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:/php-5.3.1/ext/php_curl.dll' - The specified module could not be found.\r\n in Unknown on line 0 The file is right there, and it's loading php_mysql.dll without any problem. I tried everything : to put the dll file in apache\bin, windows\system32, put the path of the php EXT in the PATH environment variable. to put some lib (libeay.dll and sssomething.dll) in windows 32 Well, I think this might have something to do with my Windows being 64 bits or with the version of PHP.. maybe. I don't know anymore :( Any idea? Update I'm not using Wamp because I like to know what I do to my system, and ultimately choose the version that I want of apache, php and MySql. My Solution I added the path of PHP in my PATH environement variable and it worked. I'll try to find out what was the DLL needed. Update : Well it looks like it was libeay32.dll and sslleay32.dll had to be in the PATH environment variable. I added to the bin subdirectory of Apache and it worked.
