• Have SSIS' differing type systems ever caused you problems?

  One thing that has always infuriated me about SSIS is the fact that every package has three different type systems; to give you an idea of what I am talking about consider the following: The SSIS dataflow's type system is made up of types called DT_*  (e.g. DT_STR, DT_I4) The SSIS variable type system is based on .Net datatypes (e.g. String, Int32) The types available for Execute SQL Task's parameters are based on something else - I don't exactly know what (e.g. VARCHAR, LONG) Speaking euphemistically ... this is not an optimum situation (were I not speaking euphemistically I would be a lot ruder) and hence I have submitted a suggestion to Connect at [SSIS] Consolidate three type systems into one requesting that it be remedied. This accompanying blog post is not however a request for votes (though that would be nice); the reason is actually subtler than that. Let me explain. I have been submitting bugs and suggestions pertaining to SSIS for years and have, so far, submitted over 200 Connect items. If that experience has taught me anything it is this - Connect items are not generally actioned because they are considered "nice to have". No, SSIS Connect items get actioned because they cause customers grief and if I am perfectly honest I must admit that, other than being a bit gnarly, SSIS' three type system architecture has never knowingly caused me any significant problems. The reason for this blog post is to ask if any reader out there has ever encountered any problems on account of SSIS' three type systems or have you, like me, never found them to be a problem? Errors or performance degredation caused by implicit type conversions would, I believe, present a strong case for getting this situation remedied in a future version of SSIS so if you HAVE encountered such problems I would encourage you to leave a comment on the Connect submission accordingly. • How to learn & introduce scrum in small startup?

  In a few months, a friend will establish his startup software company, and I will be the software architect with one additional developer. Though we have no real day-to-day experience with agile methods, I have read much "overview" type of material on them, and I firmly believe they are a good - if not the only - way to build software. So with this company, I want to go for iterative, agile development from day 1, preferably something light-weight. I was thinking of Scrum, but the question is: what is the best way for me and my colleagues to learn about it, to introduce it (which techniques when etc) and to evaluate whether we should keep it? Background which might be relevant: we're all experienced developers around the same age with similar professional mindset. We have worked together in the past and afterwards at several different companies, mostly with a Java/.NET focus. Some are a bit familiar with general ideas from the agile movement. In this startup, I have great power over tools, methods and process. The startup's product will be developed from scratch and could be classified as middleware. We have some "customer" contacts in the industry who could provide input as soon as we get to an alpha stage.

• Turning on the wireless card freezes Ubuntu 12.04

  I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 for close to a year. Occasionally after booting into Gnome 3, the desktop is unresponsive to cursor clicks. The mouse cursor moves but can't open menus. Also the network icon displays a red error badge instead of the usual gray x indicating that it is off. The only way I have found to solve this is to switch to a terminal shell (Ctrl-Alt-F5), login and kill gnome-session. This is an intermittent and occasional problem. Recently I moved house and set up this computer in my new apartment. Now I have for the first time a new and more difficult problem. Switching on the wireless card (wlan0) to connect to the wifi router causes the desktop to freeze. Switching to a terminal via Ctrl-Alt-F5 doesn't work. The only solution is a hard reboot from the power switch. How can I diagnose the second, more recent problem? Is there a solution? Cheers, Ryan

• Is Openness at the heart of the EU Digital Agenda?

  At OpenForum Europe Summit 2010, to be held in Brussels, Autoworld, 11 Parc du Cinquantenaire on Thursday 10 June 2010, a number of global speakers will discuss whether it indeed provides an open digital market as a catalyst for economic growth and if it will deliver a truly open e-government and digital citizenship (see Summit 2010). In 2008, OpenForum Europe, a not-for-profit champion of openness through open standards, hosted one of the most cited speeches by Neelie Kroes, then Commissioner of Competition. Her forward-looking speech on openness and interoperability as a way to improve the competitiveness of ICT markets set the EU on a path to eradicate lock-in forever. On the two-year anniversary of that event, Vice President Kroes, now the first-ever Commissioner of the Digital Agenda, is set to outline her plans for delivering on that vision. Much excitement surrounds open standards, given that Kroes is a staunch believer. The EU's Digital Agenda promises IT standardization reform in Europe and vows to recognize global standards development organizations (fora/consortia) by 2010. However, she avoided the term "open standards" in her new strategy. Markets are, of course, asking why she is keeping her cards tight on this crucial issue. Following her speech, Professor Yochai Benkler, award-winning author of "The Wealth of Networks", and Professor Nigel Shadbolt, appointed by the UK Government to work alongside Sir Tim Berners-Lee to help transform public access to UK Government information join dozens of speakers in the quest to analyse, entertain and challenge European IT policy, people, and documents. Speakers at OFE Summit 2010 include David Drummond, Senior VP Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer, Google; Michael Karasick, VP Technology and Strategy, IBM; Don Deutsch, Vice President, Standards Strategy and Architecture for Oracle Corp; Thomas Vinje, Partner Clifford Chance; Jerry Fishenden, Director, Centre for Policy Research, and Rishab Ghosh, head, collaborative creativity group, UNU-MERIT, Maastricht (see speakers). Will openness stay at the heart of EU Digital Agenda? Only time will show.

• Did you forget me?

  I know it has been a long time since I last blogged. Still at it, looking for work in the “IT” field. Had another phone interview (only found out during the interview that it was for one year contract job, but I still would take it) for a Help Desk job. Didn’t get it, they thought I was not a application support person and more of a hardware support. Gee..I started out in “IT” as a programmer. Then a programmer/computer operator, then a Tandem/Lan operator and finally a Network operator. I had to deal with so many different operating systems, software and applications.   And they thought I was too hardware. Well I am working a temp day job with the U.S. Census. It gets me out of the house and out in the country. If find getting paid to check for living quarters not bad job, except for the many houses I find that are up for sale and looks like it was not the owners (former owners it seems) idea, with the kids toys still in the yards. Not good for some one with a over active imagine or for my truck. So far I have backed in to ditch (and had to be pulled out), in to power pole (no damage to pole and very little to truck) and a mail box (no damage to truck but mail box was leaning a little) in the last two weeks.   Oh an I have started reading/using “The Love Dare” book from the movie “Fireproof”. I restarted (yes I have had to go back to day one from day five) the dare this Sunday. Dare one dare/day one “Love Is Patient” and the first dare is (reading from the book is): “The first part of this dare is fairly simple. Although Love is communicated in a number of ways. Our words often reflect the condition of our heart. For the next day, resolve to demonstrate patience and to sys nothing negative to your spouse at all. If the temptation arises, choose not to say anything. It’s better to hold your tongue that to say something you’ll regret. “. This was almost too easy as I can hold back from saying anything bad to any one but, this can also be a problem in life (you hold back for so long and!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • How to factor out data layer in nopCommerce and replace MS SQL with RavenDB?

  I am new to nopCommerce and ecommerce in general but I am involved in an ecommerce project. Now from my past experiences with RavenDB (which mostly were absolutely pleasant) and based on the needs of the business (fast changes with awkward business workflows) It seemed to be an appealing option to have RavenDB handling all sort of things related to the database. I do not understand design and architecture of nopCommerce fully so I did not reach to a conclusion on how to factor data parts, since it seems the services layer actually does not abstract data-layer concepts away; like bringing in EF working model to other layers. I have found another project which used NuDB as it's database as a nopCommerce fork. But it did not help because NuDB still has the feeling of a RDBMS and is not as different as RavenDB. Now first how can I learn about the internals of nopCommerce (other than investigating the code)? It's workflows? It's conventions? Second has anyone tried something similar before with a NoSQL database (say like MongoDB or RavenDB)? Is it possible to achieve this in a 1 (~2) month time frame? Thanks in advance;

• CERN Announces the Discovery of a Higgs-Boson-like Particle

  CERN scientists dropped a press release today indicating they’ve found a particle consistent with the long sought after Higgs Boson particle–the “God” particle, that could help radically refine our understanding of Standard Model of Particle Physics. For years scientists at CERN have been harnessing the power of the Large Hadron Collider to answer fundamental questions about the nature of particles and the universe around us. In the above video John Ellis, a theoretical physicist, answers the question “What is the Higgs Boson?” The video pairs nicely with the CERN press release: “We observe in our data clear signs of a new particle, at the level of 5 sigma, in the mass region around 126 GeV. The outstanding performance of the LHC and ATLAS and the huge efforts of many people have brought us to this exciting stage,” said ATLAS experiment spokesperson Fabiola Gianotti, “but a little more time is needed to prepare these results for publication.” “The results are preliminary but the 5 sigma signal at around 125 GeV we’re seeing is dramatic. This is indeed a new particle. We know it must be a boson and it’s the heaviest boson ever found,” said CMS experiment spokesperson Joe Incandela. “The implications are very significant and it is precisely for this reason that we must be extremely diligent in all of our studies and cross-checks.” “It’s hard not to get excited by these results,” said CERN Research Director Sergio Bertolucci. “ We stated last year that in 2012 we would either find a new Higgs-like particle or exclude the existence of the Standard Model Higgs.   The Defense Manpower Data Center milConnect website recently won the 2012 Excellence.gov Award for Excellence in the Workforce. Defense Manpower Data Center milConnect is a centralized, online resource that provides military service members (active and retired) and their families (over 42 million in total) quick access to their profile, health care enrollments, benefits, and other military-related topics. An easy to use, safe and secure website, milConnect also provides service members with convenient access their personnel and service-related information. The self-service website allow users to quickly and easily find and, where applicable, update their information in the Defense Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and milConnect transmits information to and from one reliable source safely and securely.  The Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) maintains the largest, most comprehensive central repository of personnel, manpower, casualty, pay, entitlement, personnel security, person identity and attributes, survey, testing, training, and financial data in the Department of Defense (DoD).  This is one of the largest systems of record in the world. milConnect had the challenge of modernizing the user experience for over 42 million users. • Watson Ties Against Human Jeopardy Opponents

  In January we showed you a video of Waton in a practice round against Jeopardy champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Last night they squared off in a real round of Jeopardy with Watson in a tie with Rutter. Watson held his own against the two champions leveraging the 90 IBM Power 750 servers, 2,880 processors, and the 16TB of memory driving him to his full advantage. It was impressive to watch the round unfold and to see where Watson shined and where he faltered. Check out the video below to footage of Watson in training and then in action on Jeopardy. Pay special attention to the things that trip him up. Watson answers cut and dry questions with absolute lighting speed but stumbles when it comes to nuances in language–like finis vs. terminus in the train question that Jennings answered correctly. • How do I get a Canon MG, MP and MX series USB printer working?

  Printer MP6150 driver installed itself upon plugging in the printer. Printer is recognized (lsusb shows it) but does not mount. If the printer is recognized, the driver must be working (or?), but something is blocking the system from mounting the printer. • Technology stack for CRUD apps [closed]

  In the past years, I have been using VB6 + MySQL when developing CRUD applications. Now I am currently learning how to develop web applications, as my plan is to go through the "browser/web app" path every time I build a CRUD app. I'm leaning on Ruby on Rails + MySQL/PostgreSQL/any NoSQL database now. I would like to know what other technology/tools stack to include in my architecture when developing these web apps? I'm asking your inputs with regards to the UI, database and reporting stack/toolset. Currently I have these in mind: UI = jQuery, jQueryUI (add your comments for other good UI stack) database = will be considering NoSQL or simply but RDBMS reporting tool = i'm clueless here Will it also make sense to use NoSQL database on these CRUD applications? I am assuming that the data would balloon later on. The desktop/native app route is an option only if there is a requirement, that in my limited experience, believes that a web app can't solve. Like for example those imaging apps/document forms and point-of-sale systems. I believe that web apps are gaining ground now and I find it most fun and intriguing to play and experiment with them. Please share your suggestions!

  Related to this question How do I run qemu with 64bit processor on a 64bit machine?, I'm trying to run latest ubuntu 11.10 64bit distribution under Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit using qemu on a core2duo (64 bit cpu) machine, using following qemu parameters with no success. Error under qemu: "This kernel required an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropiate for your CPU" Isn't qemu suppose to emulate a 64 bit machine?   A few weeks ago we published an article that explained how to use Oracle Solaris Cluster 3.3 5/11 to provide a virtual, multitiered architecture for Oracle Real Application Cluster (Oracle RAC) 11.2.0.2. We called it ... How to Deploy Oracle RAC on Zone Clusters Welllllll ... we just published another article just like it. Except that it's different. The earlier article was for Oracle RAC 11.2.0.2. This one is for Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3. This one describes how to do the same thing as the earlier one --create an Oracle Solaris Zone cluster, install and configure Oracle Grid Infrastructure and Oracle RAC in the zone cluster, and create an Oracle Solaris Cluster resource for Oracle RAC-- but for version 11.2.0.3 of Oracle RAC. Even though the objective is the same, and the version is only a dot-dot-dot release away, the process is quite different. So we decided to call it: How to Deploy Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3 on Zone Clusters Hope you can keep the different versions clear in your head.
