• Curious to Know what Eclipse 'Show Heap Status' does

  Hi All In Eclipse (I am using 3.4 Ganymede) there is an option under Preferences>General>Show Heap Status which when checked shows near bottom of IDE like 46M of 98M and if we move the mouse over 'Recycle Bin' it says 'Run Garbage Collector'. I am curoius to know how this works.What will happen when 'Run Garbage Collector' is clicked. My enivroment set up is something like jdk6 is insatlled and IDE used for development and run in Tomcat server. So my understanding is all the objects which are run through Tomcat should be garbage collected. Is this correct. Is there a way to see what objects Eclipse identified as Garbage Cheers

  Hi!  Does anyone have a real-world experience in building such a project? I'd like to move away questions about "is it good idea or not", but focus on possible solutions. I see one simple way - HTTP GET/POST + xml/json - and one more elegant - AJAX/DWR. As for the first one - I understand that it is possible, but needs quite a lot coding. As for second way - is it possible to use Java DWR engine with PHP front-end? Is DWR language-independent for client side (as it uses just JavaScript)?  Would it be a problem, that client page was generated by one web server (for example, apache+php) and served on server-side by another (for example, tomcat)? I suspect, that Tomcat will complain about sessions. Can this problem be fixed with allowing cross-domain AJAX? Thank you in advance. Denis.

• Why is memory management so visible in Java VM?

  I'm playing around with writing some simple Spring-based web apps and deploying them to Tomcat. Almost immediately, I run into the need to customize the Tomcat's JVM settings with -XX:MaxPermSize (and -Xmx and -Xms); without this, the server easily runs out of PermGen space. Why is this such an issue for Java VMs compared to other garbage collected languages? Comparing counts of "tune X memory usage" for X in Java, Ruby, Perl and Python, shows that Java has easily an order of magnitude more hits in Google than the other languages combined. I'd also be interested in references to technical papers/blog-posts/etc explaining design choices behind JVM GC implementations, across different JVMs or compared to other interpreted language VMs (e.g. comparing Sun or IBM JVM to Parrot). Are there technical reasons why JVM users still have to deal with non-auto-tuning heap/permgen sizes?

• JQuery uploadify plugin not working

  Hello, I first used primefaces FileUpload component and it didn't work. Always gave "HTTP Error". So i thought there is some bug with this component and went to plain old JQuery and tried using uploadify. But still i get the same error. I am using Container Managed Security. Is this the reason for not working properly? • nginx trailing slash issues

  I'm googling a lot and found several workarounds, but you have to deinfe every single directory. On Apache: example.com/hi - example.com/hi/ On nginx: example.com/hi - Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at example.com:8888 where 8888 is what Apache is listening on (nginx's :80 - localhost:8888) Any ideas how to fix this and have it just forward normally like folder?

• Will client JVM for a web service(https) throw an SSL Exception when the server is having a valid ce

  I have a web service deployed on tomcat hosted on a remote server. I have set it up such that it can be accessed only via HTTPS. For this, I generated a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and used it to get a temporary certificate from VeriSign. My web service client is on my local machine. If I try to access the service it will throw a javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException:unable to find valid certification path to requested target If I install the certificate in to local Java's keystore, the issue will be resolved. My question is if I install a valid SSL certificate from a CA in to my tomcat server, will I get this client-side error even if I do not import the certificate to local key store?

  Hi, I'm developing an Eclipse SWT application using Eclipse. There are also some JUnit 4 tests, which test some DAO's. But when I try to run the tests via an ant build, all of the tests fail, because the test classes aren't found. Google brought up about a million of people who all have the same problem, but none of their solutions seem to work for me -.- .   hey everybody, I have a jsp page which contains the code which prints all files in a given directory and their file paths. For example, the code spits out the following path: /usr/local/tomcat/sites/web_tech/images/scores/blah.jpg and I want it to only print the path up to /images ie /images/scores/blah.jpg I know I could just mess around with an actual string, ie splitting it or string matching, but is there an easier way to do it? • getResourceAsStream not loading resource in webapp

  I have a web application that uses a library which resides in TOMCAT_HOME/common/lib. This library looks for a properties file at the root of the classpath (in a class called ApplicationConfig): ApplicationConfig.class.getResourceAsStream("/hv-application.properties"); My Tomcat web application contains this properties file. It is in WEB-INF/classes, which is the root of the classpath right? However, at runtime, when it tries to load the properties file, it throws an exception because it can't find it (getResourceAsStream returns null). Everything works fine if my application is a simple, standalone Java application. Does Tomcat cause the getResourceAsStream method to act differently? I know there's a lot of similar questions out there, but none of them have helped unfortunately. Thanks.

• Maven2 not compiling source

  Hi, I am new to Maven2 and have been having an issue with the compiling of the source for a RAR. Maven currently copies all the information located at my sourceDirectory instead of compiling it even though the console states that the source is being compiled. If I navigate to the sourceDirectory I find all my source files with no compiled class files. I have tried changing my outputDirectory to a different location and when I inspect this directory I find that it only copied my source files instead of compiling them. I have added an example of my POM.   Can someone explain the difference between apache mod_wsgi in daemon mode and django fastcgi in threaded mode. They both use threads for concurrency I think. Supposing that I'm using nginx as front end to apache mod_wsgi. UPDATE: I'm comparing django built in fastcgi(./manage.py method=threaded maxchildren=15) and mod_wsgi in 'daemon' mode(WSGIDaemonProcess example threads=15). They both use threads and acquire GIL, am I right?

  I am writing a filter that will handle all authentication related tasks.   All, We are running a J2EE application on WebLogic server 9.2 MP2 with a jrockit 64-bit JVM (27.3.1) on Solaris 10. We call use runtime.exec to call an executable called jfmerge to create PDF documents. We have found that in Solaris, when runtime.exec is called, a duplicate JVM is temporarily spawned to kick off the jfmerge process. While this is inefficient (our JVM is 5 GB, thus the duplicated shell JVM is also 5 GB), the major problem lies in the fact that when there is heavy load on this functionality (PDF generation) in our application, sometimes the duplicated JVM never exits. When the JVM hangs, the servers create large issues (extreme application slowness and terminated user sessions) as the entire duplicate JVM get's all of its 5 GB of process size written to disk swap. • NoSQL or Ehcache caching ?

  I'm building a Route Planner Webapp using Spring/Hibernate/Tomcat and a mysql database, I have a database containing read only data, such as Bus Stop Coordinates, Bus times which is never updated. I'm trying to make the app run faster, each time the application is run it will preform approx 1000 reads to the database to calculate a route. I have setup a Ehcache which greatly improves the read from database times. I'm now setting terracotta + Ehcache distributed caching to share the cache with multiple Tomcat JVMs. This seems a bit complicated. I've tried memcached but it was not performing as fast as ehcache. I'm wondering if a MongoDb or Redis would be better suited. I have no experience with nosql but I would appreciate if anyone has any ideas. What i need is quick access to the read only database.
