  • Computer no display from connection problem.

    My computer is booting but has no display. The optical drive has power, but the USB doesn't, so I figured that I had a broken motherboard. However I tried to boot my computer again laying flat, and it worked fine for two seconds, and then froze like it did the first time. It had no display after that. I have come to the conclusion that it is a connection problem (someone had a similar problem on one of the online forums).

  • Laptop powering off after 10 mins or so

    I have no OS installed, and I am trying to use a linux boot disc. However it is not a linux problem....if I just leave the computer on at the no operating system found message, it still turns off. I thought maybe it was overheating, but I am 90% sure that is not the problem. What else could cause this? I should have mentioned, it's a laptop.

  • keyboard works in the BIOS(except a), but not at the password screen(win 7, 64bit)

    The computer is a acer aspire 7720g laptop. When windows want me to input my password, the only keys working is caps lock, the numpad and the m key(and the m key works like a combined m and enter key). I did spill some water on the keyboard yesterday but the same thing happens with usb keyboards. I disabled the quick boot in the bios, making it go through every test at bootup, which resulted in continous beeping from the computer. Anyone know how to solve this?

I wonder this for Avast too... I'm using PyQt for my image processing app and trying to improve the look and feel which is essential for it. But i can't find these type of custom styles etc...   • Virtualization Solution for Family Use

    I'm trying to put together a solution for my family (wife + three kids). At the moment I have one newish desktop and a couple of aging laptops. There are always arguments over who should have the fast desktop. I'm thinking I would like to invest in a new powerful server and then run virtual desktops for each user off the server so that each user would have the same experience regardless of which actual PC they were using. I would like to use just a Linux based desktop, but unfortunately I need to support some Windows games for the kids. I've not tried wine for the games but would be willing to give it a try. Any advice on what the setup should be would be most appreciated.

  • Why did my graphics card explode?

    How did my graphics card "explode" like it did in the picture I have here? And if I was just plugging into my on-board graphics, why wouldn't the PC boot up like it normally would? It wouldn't come up until I opened the cover and removed the card, that's when I found it like this. EDIT: If the card was trying to still operate like this for a while, did it run the risk of damaging the PCI-E slot?

    To facilitate automation of guest VM provisioning, how do I set (in a script) the IP address on a guest VM's NIC (or NIC's) once a new VM has booted? Is there a way to "inject" netsh commands via the Citrix guest OS tools (for Windows for example) once the host has started? Or can this be done via the Citrix API/SDK or the xe tools? These are windows 2008 servers that have been sysprep'd so when the boot for the first time they have no IP address.

    You wrote in a reply this Blockquote The problem is that sftp runs as the user's id -- first, the sftp client ssh's into the target host as the given user, then runs sftp-server. Since sftp-server is running as a regular user, it has no way to "give away" a file (change owner of a file). However, if you are able to use scp, and assign a key pair to each user, you can get around this. This involves adding a user's key to root's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file, with a "command=" parameter to force it to run a script that sanitizes and alters the arguments of the server-side scp program. I've used this technique before to set up an anonymous scp dropbox that allowed anyone to submit a file, and ensure that no one could retrieve submitted files and also prevent overwrites. If you are open to this technique, let me know and I'll update this post with a quick recipe. We are interested in this scp quick recipe for our community services file sharing.   • I accidentally made my new hard drive (the non system drive) my primary partition

    Hi all, When installing a new hard drive, I accidentally formatted it using 'Disk Management' and set it up as my primary active partition, even though it isn't the system drive. Then, when I restarted my machine, Windows wouldn't boot, citing a missing or corrupt SYSTEM folder. Can anyone help me re-enable the system hard drive as my primary active partition? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I need to process an SVN working copy in a PS script, but I have trouble passing arguments to functions.     relevant software: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.3 (Santiago) cpanel installed 11.34.0 (build 7) background and problem: I was getting a disk usage warning (via cpanel) because /var seemed to be filling up on my server. The assumption would be that there was a log file growing too large and filling up the partition. I recently removed a large log file and changed my syslog config to rotate the log files more regularly. I removed something like /var/log/somefile and edited /etc/rsyslog.conf. This is the reason I was suspicious of the disk usage report warning issued by cpanel that I was getting because it didn't seem right. This is what df was reporting for the partitions: $ [/var]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda2 9.9G 511M 8.9G 6% / tmpfs 5.9G 0 5.9G 0% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 99M 53M 42M 56% /boot /dev/sda8 883G 384G 455G 46% /home /dev/sdb1 9.9G 151M 9.3G 2% /tmp /dev/sda3 9.9G 7.8G 1.6G 84% /usr /dev/sda5 9.9G 9.3G 108M 99% /var This is what du was reporting for /var mount point: $ [/var]# du -sh 528M . clearly something funky was going on. I had a similar kind of reporting inconsistency in the past and I restarted the server and df reporting seemed to be correct after that. I decided to reboot the server to see if the same thing would happpen. This is what df reports now: $ [~]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda2 9.9G 511M 8.9G 6% / tmpfs 5.9G 0 5.9G 0% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 99M 53M 42M 56% /boot /dev/sda8 883G 384G 455G 46% /home /dev/sdb1 9.9G 151M 9.3G 2% /tmp /dev/sda3 9.9G 7.8G 1.6G 84% /usr /dev/sda5 9.9G 697M 8.7G 8% /var This looks more like what I'd expect to get. For consistency this is what du reports for /var: $ [/var]# du -sh 638M . question: This is a nuisance. I'm not sure where the disk usage reports issued by cpanel get their info but it clearly isn't correct. How can I avoid this inaccurate reporting in the future? It seems like df reporting wrong disk usage is a strong indicator of the source problem but I'm not sure. Is there a way to 'refresh' the filesystem somehow so that the df report is accurate without restarting the server? Any other ideas for resolving this issue?

  • Repair BAD Sectors or Buy a new HDD?

    I have a Seagate internal hard disk drive. I recently opened up my laptop [Dell Inspiron N5010] [Warranty has expired], cleaned it and it worked normally after waking up from hibernation. However, when I restarted it, it stuck on windows loading screen, then tried to boot from Dell recovery partition but failed. It gave the error: Windows has encounter a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer. Status: 0xc00000e9 Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred. While cleaning, I had mistakenly touched the round silvery thing at the bottom of the HDD. I don't know whether this has caused the problem or not. Since I have Fedora also installed in the same HDD, I can boot from it but it shows weird read errors when I ask it to mount Windows partitions. The disk utility also says that the Hard Disk has many bad sectors and needs to be replaced. I downloaded Seatools from Seagate website and used it. In the long test, I gave it permission to repair the first 100 errors which it did successfully. Now I am confused at what I should do. Internal Hard Disk Costs: a. Internal HDD 500GB Costs: Rs3518 b.1 External HDD 500GB Costs: Rs3472 b.2 External HDD 1TB Costs: Rs5500 c. Internal to External Converter Costs: Rs650 I have the following options: (i) Buy an External HDD, backup my data. Try to repair bad sectors of HDD. Then two cases arise: (a) My Internal HDD gets repaired [almost] (b) My internal HDD doesn't get repaired. Then I need to buy another internal HDD and replace the damaged one. OR break the seal of the external one and put it inside my laptop as internal. Breaking the case involves risks. (ii) Buy a Internal HDD and an Internal to External Converter Case [Not very reliable], backup my data. Try to repair bad sectors of HDD. Then two cases arise: (a) My Internal HDD gets repaired [almost] (b) My internal HDD doesn't get repaired. Then I need to just put in the new internal HDD I just bought. Experts, please guide me as to what will be the most VFM option? Also, if a HDD is failing, is it that I shouldn't read from it too otherwise there is a chance of other sectors failing? What I mean is, is it wrong to read from the HDD without taking backup first?

  • Fix static ip address problems in Ubuntu 10.04

    I used Network Manager in Ubuntu 10.04 to set a static ip address and assigned one that was already in use. Now my computer will not boot (nfs crashes). I booted from a live cd to change the configuration on the file system in /etc/network/interfaces but the file looks to be the default. Where does the network manager (the gui from system- preferences) store it's configuration so I can overwrite it and enter the correct ip addresss and have a happy working computer again. thanks!!

  • How to increase the number of vmware.log files?

    Hi all, Is there any way to increase the number of vmware.log files for a given VM (Vmware Server 1.0.4, host: SLES 10)? Problem is, that one of our VMs crashes every now and then, and I can only see the four log files vmware.log, vmware-0.log, vmware-1.log and vmware-2.log each of which contains records starting after the crash when trying to boot.     From the powershell prompt, when I try to run a program and feed it a command line option, powershell ends up mangling the option. Why does this happen? Is there any way to stop it besides enclosing the option in quotes? For example, from the powershell prompt: PS Microsoft.PowerShell.Core\FileSystem::\\mach\share .\myprog.exe -file=input.txt myprog.exe ends up getting two arguments: 1) -file=input 2) .txt I need to run it like: .\myprog.exe "-file=input.txt" or .\myprog.exe '-file=input.txt' to force it to be one argument. No other shell does this.
