  Hello, my company has about 100 computer each using individual licenses for MS Office and Windows. We are looking to upgrade about 50 computers. We, in the past, have used Dell as our main supplier of PCs and would like to continue with them. What would be the best route for us in upgrading these 50 computers. • Hardware requirements for playing HD

  A friend of mine has some HD videos (720p and 1080p), so i would like what are the hardware requirements in order to play them correctly with no slowing-downs ? my computer is build of : Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz nvidia GeForce 5200 FX 768 RAM My friend said that it won't be possible to play the HD videos on my comp because of it's old hardware - is this true ? And again, what are the minimal hardware setup needed to play HD ? Thanks.

• DI-524UP will become deadly slow when downloading torrents

  I have a DI-524UP router that shares internet to two notebooks at home via wireless and a desktop via wired collection. It will become barely available/pingable via wireless when I download torrents on a desktop computer. Even when I limit download speed to 20% or less of available bandwidth - it must be something else, not the speed that causes the issue. I've tried limiting number of active connections and stuff but it will still not cure. Is there anything I can do about this?

• Windows 7 boot problem (with colorful blinking smilies)

  I put my computer (Windows 7) to sleep, and a couple hours later, tried to wake it back up, but the monitor wouldn't come back on. I did a hard reset (held power button), but I still couldn't get the monitor to show anything. I plugged it into my laptop, and the monitor works fine. I then swapped out the video card with an older one I have. The monitor came on and started showing the boot process. However, shortly after the Windows 7 animated logo came up, the screen went blank, it made this weird beeping noise, and I seen the strangest thing ever. Small, colorful blocks started to fill my screen, and flash, as if something was loading. Inside of those blocks, were smilies (like the ASCII character kind). This continued for about a minute, then the computer rebooted. It scared the sh!t out of me. I've never had a virus before, and I'm savvy enough to keep myself from one, but I'm wondering if that's what it was. I've been using computers for ages, and never seen anything quite like this. Has anyone ever seen something like this? I'm doing hardware diagnostics before trying to boot into Windows again. Hopefully I can figure this out, but I thought I would consult the SU community while I wait on these results. -- UPDATE -- I did a Memory Diagnostic, which turned up nothing. I also booted into Safe Mode no problem, and scheduled a disk check on both of my drives (I dual boot XP & 7). I was feeling good, and tried putting my regular video card back in, and the monitor won't display anything with it. Also, even though the monitor displays nothing, the system sounds like it's booting up. However, I hear a clicking in one of my hard drives that isn't there with the older video card. Could this be a problem with my hard drive, video card, or PSU? PSU makes sense, except for the fact I've been using the same setup for over a year, and the video card doesn't require it's own power plug thing.

• Drivers not installing and drives not being recognized

  Dell optiplex 755 running win7-32 Two problems, not sure if they're related 1: Two drivers are missing when viewing device manager, PCI serial port and PCI Simple Communications Controller, I've searched dell's site, and the internet as a whole and have been wholly unable to find the drivers. 2: I'm unable to connect any external hard drives, but any flash drives plugged in will be recognized and accessible by the computer without issue. Any help would be appreciated.

• Troubleshooting Windows Explorer

  I have a .NET application that receives messages from a web server and alerts the user. I have one Windows XP SP3 computer that when my application receives the message, it crashes the Windows Explorer shell. (I can see the message received in the listview just before Explorer crashes.) I don't see any errors in the Windows event logs. Is there somewhere that I should be looking at to troubleshoot this problem?

  Hello everyone, I am using scp command to copy file from a MacBook Pro OS X 10.5 to another Linux box (Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5). I am using the following command on Mac, sudo scp ~/.ssh/mykey.rsa [email protected], there is no output from Mac command line. I am not sure whether the scp is success or not. When I try to ping the server from client computer A I get the following: PING 74.208.192.xxx ==> Ping fails PING 74.208.192.xxx:80 ==> Ping succeeds! From client computer B, BOTH the pings fail. PING 74.208.192.xxx ==> Ping fails PING 74.208.192.xxx:80 ==> Ping fails with a message "Ping request could not find host 74.208.192.xxx:80" Both clients A and B are on the same subnet. The server is outside (a virtual server hosted by an ISP) I have an ASP.NET application in a virtual directory on the server. In IE or firefox, if I enter http://74.208.192.xxx/subdir/subdir/../Default.aspx, it works from both the clients! The server has default firewall settings but web server enabled (Port 80 is open). From client A (note the different 'reply to' address when the ping succeeds. • why am I seeing "ghost" folder contents on Vista?

  Today, after I clicked "folder X" in my external hard drive, instead of seeing the contents of "folder X", I see the contents of my flash drive...which is not connected to my computer. My flash drive's files show for a couple of seconds before I am brought to "folder X" which was the folder I wanted to go to as mentioned in the beginning of this post. Any idea why this happened? I'm using Vista 32-bit business edition.

• Office 2003 won't install with proper CD KEY

  I wanted to reinstall Office 2003 Pro. I retrieved the key with NirSoft ProduKey, confirmed with Jelly Bean Windows Key Finder and the key is the same. I've tried 3 different Office 2003 PRO CD's and it still won't install because it's saying key is bad, i even tried with different key from other computer and it also won't install. • Ubuntu 9.1 - Audio coming from both speakers and headphones

  I have an HP Compaq nc8230 that has an annoying little problem with it's audio devices in Ubuntu 9.1. When I have the headphones plugged in, the audio continues to play simultaneously through the speakers no matter what. I'm not sure what kind of sound card this computer has, but in WIndows XP, Vista, 7 and OSx86 I didn't have this problem. I've tried using 3 different headphones and it didn't change anything. Please help.

When I first was using it 3 years ago, it would let you search a database of thousands of ready-made templates, which I think Microsoft hosted at their own website. Several months ago, these templates were no longer available. I'm looking for some kind of replacement for common computer architecture and digital circuits, as well as user interface mock-ups. • "SSH server" in Windows?

  I have some command-line commands to execute on a Windows machine. The programs I need to run are only available on Windows. Is there a way to easily to do something like I would do with SSH? Example of what I mean: ssh [email protected] "remote command to execute" ...or do I have to Remote Desktop just to do this? (I'd like to run the commands programmatically from another computer rather than running them by hand.)

• WOL not working with two NIC's

  We have recently moved from a windows 2003 server to an 08 R2. Running the program from the command line says that the magic packet has successfully been sent but it never actually reached the destination computer. We have two NIC's on the server. If I disable the NIC that isn't (currently) in use, WOL will work fine, but in the future we will need to use both NIC's. Also, we use MAC Addresses for WOL.

• Redirecting a port to a remote server on windows

  I only have command line access to a server and I'm not allowed to disable the antivirus (which blocks netcat). What I would like to do is have a program that listens on port A and when a remote computer connects to it redirect all input/output of that socket to another server on a different port.   Hi all, I discovered X11, and I was wondering if it is possible to install it on a dedicated server, and have a "desktop" from the server running on my personnal computer ? Or maybe it is necessary for the server to have a screen ? Or a least kde or gnome ? What I want is a desktop of my server (as if it had a screen), but on my laptop, through internet.
