  Hello everyone, Let me begin this topic by explaining my background experience with web design. I have always been more of a back end programmer, with PHP and SQL and things. However I do have a shallow background with HTML and CSS. The problem is, I don't know it all. What I do know is, when it comes to designing (not back end dirty work) I understand basic CSS properties and I also understand HTML and I can usually throw together a sloppy web page with the two and a couple bazillion DIV tags. Anyways.. The problem I always have encountered is that when I design a website in a browser such as IE7 (and then it looks perfect on IE7), and then look at it on IE8 or IE6 or Mozilla (etc.) it gets all spacey and ugly and looks totally different than the way it should look on IE7. Question one: Basically, what I am asking everyone is what route should I take to learn how to properly build the website? Build as in put it togehter with CSS standards and HTML standards that will make my site look the same on every brwoser. (Not only learning standards but where can I learn to properly write my code?) Where is a strong free resource I can use to learn how to these things? Question two: How do I properly code my website? Do I use all external style sheets to make dynamic page design simplistic or do I hard code some things into the DIV tags on each page? What is proper? Oh, and if anyone has any tutorials on how to properly design a complete layout feel free to throw it in a response somewhere. Thank you for taking the time to read my questions, and hopefully you will understand what I am trying to get out to everyone. • How to structure VB.NET windows forms applications

  What is the best way to structure a VB.NET windows forms application so that code can be reused and the app can be extended easily. I used to create lots of new forms. This lead to lots of repeated code and forms which did similar things. Now, for forms which do similar jobs, such as view/edit/delete items from a specific db table, I create a form with the required controls, have the form create an instance of a class with params such as a collection of the controls and a string containing the db table name. Then the individual controls call functions of the class. Advanced forms will inherit and extend this basic form class. 1) Has there already been work done in this area? 2) Are there books / articles available which discuss the options available on this topic? • Open source GIS tools

  Hi I’ve been looking at Open Source GIS tools. In particular MapServer and GeoServer. The problem I’m seeing is that to actually deploy these to the public you can’t use a regular $5/ month (or free) hosting service because you have to install these services on the server in ways that are not accessible in the average hosting scheme. So you either have to use a host that has MapServer installed (many of which look unreliable) or have a dedicated server or VPS. All of these options have a significant cost barrier ($30 - $200/month). I’m just doing this for fun. Are there any free or inexpensive ways to have your GIS services hosted? Or are there any products that install in a way that you don’t need to access the root structure of the server? I have tried OpenLayers and GeoExt but I don’t think a client side option will work for me because of the size of the datasets I am using. My base data will be vector data not WMS data (or something similar). I haven’t tried Google maps yet, but I will be looking into it. Also, any thought on using SVG for GIS purposes? Thanks

I went through the w3c specification, books and tutorials on the same, but still I am a bit unclear about certain concepts: Assume that I access Website A. Some JavaScript runs in my browser that sets a key value pair, say ('username','deepak'). Then I access Website B which also adds a key,value pair in the localstorage as ('username','mahalingam'). How will they both be differentiated? Will Website B override the value set by website A in my localstorage? How can we ensure that a website would not erase all of my localstorage?

• App freezing after lunch without any Error on Iphone Simulator?

  HI.I am using CoreData on my UITable to show some records.It works when I first run.But if I run my app on simulator second time it shows up with data but then it stops.Sometimes it quits from app or it only froze and i cant click on table or tab bar.   Hello everyone I just read the new User fql table fields at http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/fql/user As I can see a lot of the fields have been deprecated such as work_history or books and movies. It is quite essential for my app to get all those fields for my user's friends in a single fql query. If i am not wrong the only way to do this is to get those extra fields using the Graph API by requesting them seperately for every friend of my user. Is there any way to do it in a more efficient way without so many calls? Can I subscribe to real time updates for the request fields for my user's friends (i do not care about the logged in user data)? Thank you a lot

  I am writing a C# winform application for an archiving system. The system has a huge database where some tables would have more than 1.5 million records. What i need is an algorithm that indexes the content of these records. Mainly, the files are Microsoft office, PDF and TXT documents. anyone can help? whether with ideas, links, books or codes, I appreciate it :) example: if i search for the word "international" in a certain folder in the database, i get all the files that contain that word ordered by a certain criteria such as relevance, modifying date...etc

In order to calculate the difference between dates, I guess that I need to add additional calculated value to the result of the last Select-Object, or pipe the result to another Select-Object with the calculation as additional property or column. In order to do it, I need to get the previous row's FreeSpace value. Not sure if it is possible and how?

• Learning Linux screencasts

What I would like is to find number of screencasts that would cover basics of Linux commands, server administration, commonly performed tasks etc (no GUI, only terminal).   In all the books I've read on reflection they often say that there aren't many cases where you want to generate IL on the fly, but they don't give any examples of where it does make sense. After seeing Reflection.Emit as a job requirement for a gaming company I was curious where else it's being used. I'm now wondering if there are any situations you've seen in the real world were it was the best solution to the problem. Perhaps it is used as an implementation to a design pattern? Note I imagine PostSharp / AOP uses it.

• Crosstab/Cube/Pivot Components for Delphi

  I'm looking for a Delphi VCL crosstab/cube/pivotcube/olap grid component for Delphi 2009, 2010, or XE. I'm willing to sacrifice advanced features to get something open/free (or very cheap if I must) to make it easier to collaborate with any future developers without anyone having to purchase more components than I already use, since this will just be used in one screen. If there isn't anything appropriate out there, I may try to implement something simple on my own. I can live with some fairly basic features: drag and drop to configure dimensions, sort by a column, allow totals/min/max for a column, and (optionally) expand/collapse or drill down to sub-categories. Blazing performance and enterprise scalability are not required, since there should be less than 2000 source rows. There appear to be several decent options in the commercial space (ExpressPivotCube, FastCube, HierCube), but they are all a few hundred dollars. This project already uses existing installations of Excel 2007 and SQL Server 2005/2008, so I might consider leveraging those, though I'd prefer a native Delphi component, if possible. There are also the very old Decision Cube components included in Delphi's Source\xtab directory, but they apparently no longer support unicode compilers (Delphi 2009+), since I got dozens of unicode-related compilation errors while test compiling that source in Delphi XE. Those components also still link to the long-deprecated BDE! Has anyone modified Decision Cube to support unicode/pure-TDataSet? The online tutorials I found were incomplete and silent on the dozens of BDE/unicode compilation errors I see, so I might have to tackle that on my own. Does anyone have suggestions where to start for a free/cheap basic crosstab/pivot grid component?

  I know implementing database is a huge topic, but I want to have a basic understanding of how database systems work (e.g. memory management, binary tree, transaction, sql parsing, multi-threading, partitions, etc) by investigating the source code of the database. Since there are a few already proven very robust open source databases like mysql, sqlite and so on. However, the code are very complicated and I have no clue where to start. Also I find that the old school database textbooks are only explaining the theory, not the implementation details. Can anyone suggest how I should get started and if there are any books that emphasis on the technology and techniques of building dbms used in modern database industry?

  I am trying to start working with excel documents through the OpenXML SDK Spreadsheet API. But I havent found any good guides or even examples on how to create a xlsx file from scratch. Only how to open an existing document and modify it. I have been thinking on having a empty template document and make a copy of it an then begin my proccessing on it. But it doesent feel right. It might be easier but I not comfortable using a technique I dont feel that I understand "pretty" good atleast. • Is there any killer application for Ontology/semantics/OWL/RDF yet?

  Hi Guys, I got interested in semantic technologies after reading a lot of books, blogs and articles on the net saying that it would make data machine-understandable, allow intelligent agents make great reasoning, automated & dynamic service composition etc.. I am still reading the same stuff from 2 years. The number of articles/blogs/semantic-conferences have increased considerably. But I am still unable to see any killer-application. Why is it so? Or is there some application/product (commercial/open-source) already existing, which actually is doing all that being boasted of? To put it more precisely, is there any product that leverages semantic technologies (esp RDF/OWL/SPARQL) and is delivering functionality/performance/maintainability, which would not have been possible with the existing (no-semantic) technologies? Some product that is completely dependent on semantic technologies and really adds value to the customers and generating revenues?

  I have developed a Delphi web server application (TWebModule). It runs as a ISAPI DLL on Apache under Windows. The application in turn makes frequent https calls to other web sites using the Indy TIdHTTP component. Periodically I get this error when using the TIdHTTP.get method: Could not bind socket.   I am using perfmon windows utility to debug memory leak in a process. Perfmon explaination: Working Set- Working Set is the current size, in bytes, of the Working Set of this process. The Working Set is the set of memory pages touched recently by the threads in the process. If free memory in the computer is above a threshold, pages are left in the Working Set of a process even if they are not in use. When free memory falls below a threshold, pages are trimmed from Working Sets. If they are needed they will then be soft-faulted back into the Working Set before leaving main memory. Virtual Bytes- Virtual Bytes is the current size, in bytes, of the virtual address space the process is using. Use of virtual address space does not necessarily imply corresponding use of either disk or main memory pages. Virtual space is finite, and the process can limit its ability to load libraries. Private Bytes- Private Bytes is the current size, in bytes, of memory that this process has allocated that cannot be shared with other processes. Q1. Is it the private byte should I measure to be sure if the process is having any leak as it does not involve any shared libraries and any leak if happening will be coming from the process itself? Q2. What is the total memory consumed by the process? Is it the Virtual byte size? or Is it the sum of Virtual Bytes and Working Set Q3. Is there any relation between private bytes, working set and virtual bytes. Q4. Any tool which gives a better idea memory information?

  I have a scenario where I need to search from many binary files (using keys) and combine the results (strings). Until now, I have been doing it in a for loop one file after the other. foreach (string file in FileSources.Keys) { aggregatedDefinitions.Append(DefinitionLookup(txtSearchWord.Text, file)); } Since this operation is very slow, I was thinking of using threads, so that I could do IO operations in parallel. Is threading the right way to go. If I use threading, how can I ensure that I get the results in the order I want. I haven't used Threading until now. It would be very helpful if you could suggest some materials/books that would help me solve my problem.
