  A new article by Oracle’s Java Champion Jim Weaver, titled “Expressing the UI for Enterprise Applications with JavaFX 2.0 FXML -- Part Two,” now up on otn/java, shows developers how to leverage the power of the FX Markup Language to define the UI for enterprise applications. Weaver, the author of Pro JavaFX Platform, extends the SearchDemoFXML example used in Part One to include more concepts and techniques for creating an enterprise application using FXML. Weaver concludes the article by summarizing its content, “FXML provides the ability to radically change the UI without modifying the controller. This task can be accomplished by loading different FXML documents, leveraging JavaFX cascading style sheets, and creating localized resource bundles. • Animation file format

  I'm trying to make a simple 2D animation file format. It'll be very rudimentary: only an XML file containing some parameters (such as frame duration) and metadata, and some images, each representing a frame. I'd like to have the whole animation (frames and XML document) packed in a single file. How do you suggest I do that? What libraries are there that would allow easy access to the files inside the animation file itself? The language I'm using is C++ and the platform is Windows, but I'd rather not use a platform dependent library, if possible.

  i'm making my 1st game. i'm using javascript as i currently want to learn to make games without needing to learn another language but this is more of a general game dev question its a 2d turn-based tile/grid game. you can check it here http://www.patinterotest.tk/ it creates a movable area when you hover a player and it implements the A* algo for moving the player. The Problem: i want to make the 'dynamic movable area creation' already implement a limited number of steps for a player. The Questions: what is a good way to do this? is there another algorithm to use for this? the A* algorithm needs a start and destination, with what i want to do i don't have a destination or should i just limit the iteration of the A* algo to the steps variable? hopefully you understand the problem & questions easily

It has been really tiring and boring due to code-repetition. Code repetition was vast on form handling functions in controllers.So in my last project , i developed a general form input handling function.This lead a realisation that it could get even faster by more automation.   Given the amount of material that tries to explain what a context-free grammar (CFG) is, I found it surprising that very few (in my sample, less than 1 in 20) give an explanation on why such grammars are called "context-free". And, to my mind, none succeeds in doing so. My question is, why are context-free grammars called context-free? What is "the context"? I had an intuition that the context could be other language constructs surrounding the currently analyzed construct, but that seems not to be the case. Could anyone provide a precise explanation?

• Is Java easy decompilation a factor worth considering

  We are considering the programming language for a desktop application with extended GUI use (tables, windows) and heavy database use. We considered Java for use however the fact that it can be decompiled back very easily into source code is holding us back. There are of course many obfuscators available however they are just that: obfuscators. The only obfuscation worth doing we got was stripping function and variables names into meaningless letters and numbers so that at least stealing code and renaming it back into something meaningful is too much work and we are 100% sure it is not reversible back in any automated way. However as it concerns to protecting internals (like password hashes or sensible variables content) we found obfuscators really lacking. Is there any way to make Java applications as hard to decode as .exe counterparts? And is it a factor to consider when deciding whether to develop in Java a desktop application?

  I often try to avoid telling people I'm a programmer because most of the time I end up explaining to them what that really means. When I tell them I'm programming in Java they often ask general questions about the language and how it differs from x and y. I'm also not good at explaining things because 1) I don't have that much experience in the field and 2) I really hate explaining things to non-technical people.   I have a site aroundnails.com. It has English version on subdomain en.aroundnails.com. Reading about language related meta-tags for Google, I have placed such a meta tag on the main page of main site: <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="http://en.aroundnails.com/" /> By this way I have tried to say Google, that my site on en.aroundnails.com is the english version of main site, not a duplicate. After a fortnight I have lost a huge part of traffic from Google, more than a half. At the beginning of September I have moved this meta-tag, but traffic remained at the same level. Hope somebody can help me to solve this issue.

• Is there a good book to grok C++?

  This question got me thinking. I would say I am a pretty experienced C++ programmer. I use it a lot at work, I had some courses on it at the university, I can understand most C++ code I find out there without problems. Other languages you can pretty much learn by using them. But every time I use a new C++ library or check out some new C++ code by someone I did not know before, I discover a new set of idioms C++ has to offer. Basically, this has lead me to believe that there is a lot of stuff in C++ that might be worth knowing but that is not easily discoverable. So, is there a good book for a somewhat experienced C++ programmer to step up the game? You know, to kind of 'get' that language the way you can 'get' Ruby or Objective-C, where everything just suddenly makes sense and you start instinctively knowing 'that C++ way of thing'?

• Need Japanese IME with Dvorak keyboard with 13.10

  I recently did a fresh install of 13.10 and enabled Japanese language support. In the past this seemed to work seamlessly with my other keyboard settings when I set up my Dvorak keyboard. But this time when I toggle the IME on it uses the standard QWERTY layout. Typing English uses the Dvorak layout as I expect. This just worked for me in the past to the point where I stopped paying attention to what the underlying IME is and I don't recall any special steps other then choosing my keyboard layout and enabling Japanese. Any help would be appreciated!

• How does throwing an ArgumentNullException help?

  Let's say I have a method: public void DoSomething(ISomeInterface someObject) { if(someObject == null) throw new ArgumentNullException("someObject"); someObject.DoThisOrThat(); } I've been trained to believe that throwing the ArgumentNullException is "correct" but an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error means I have a bug. Why? I know that if I was caching the reference to someObject and using it later, then it's better to check for nullity when passed in, and fail early. However, if I'm dereferencing it on the next line, why are we supposed to do the check? It's going to throw an exception one way or the other. Edit: It just occurred to me... does the fear of the dereferenced null come from a language like C++ that doesn't check for you (i.e. it just tries to execute some method at memory location zero + method offset)?

• How could there still not be a mysqldb module for Python 3?

  This SO question is now more than two years old. MySQL is an incredibly popular database engine, Python is an incredibly popular programming language, and Python 3 has been officially released two years ago, and was available even before that. What's more, the whole mysqldb module is just a layer translating Python's db-api to MySQL's API. It's not that big of a library. I must be missing something here. How come almost* nobody in the entire open source community has spent the (I'm guessing) two weeks it takes to port this lib? Is Python 3 that unpopular? Is the combination of python and mysql not as common as I assume? Or maybe it's just a lot harder to port mysqldb than I assume? Anyone know the inside story on this? * Now I see that this guy has done it, which takes some of the wind out of my question, but it still seems to little and too late to make sense.

• Unable to install files with apt-get: "unable to locate package"

  I'm having issues with my ubuntu server version 12.04 installed on a HP550 laptop, when i try sudo apt-get install <programname>, e.g apache2 it will not work, saying E: Unable to locate package apache2. I have tried to look/edit the sources. but they will not work either the gedit command is broken too, i am trying gedit /etc/apt/sources.list for those wondering, is this a case of the computer network not configured properly? it downloaded a language pack easily enough in the installation though. how do i fix this? a prompt reply would be appreciated.

• Are There Realistic/Useful Solutions for Source Control for Ladder Logic Programs

  Version control for ladder logic (LL) programs for programmable logic controllers (PLCs) seems to be virtually non-existent. It may be because LL is a visual language and tends to be stored in binary files, or it may be because source code control hasn't "caught on" in process control engineering circles - or perhaps my Google-Fu is weak tonight. Do you know of any realistic and useful solutions for version control for such systems? Definitions: realistic = changes to the programs are tracked by user and subject to reversion and merges useful = the system integrates with visual LL designers, is not limited to LL from a single PLC manufacturer, and does not cost a ridiculous amount of money? Note: I have heard of people using SVN or Mercurial et al to track the binary files, but I don't think the diff/merge capabilities would display readable differences.
