• Use the long reserved word as a variable name in C#

• VB.Net List.Find. Pass values to predicate

  Having a bit of trouble using the List.Find with a custom predicate i have a function that does this private function test () Dim test As Integer = keys.Find(AddressOf FindByOldKeyAndName).NewKey here's the function for the predicate Private Shared Function FindByOldKeyAndName(ByVal k As KeyObj) As Boolean If k.OldKey = currentKey.OldKey And k.KeyName = currentKey.KeyName Then Return True Else Return False End If End Function by doing it this way means i have to have a shared "currentKey" object in the class, and i know there has to be a way to pass in the values i'm interested in of CurrentKey (namely, keyname, and oldkey) ideally i'd like to call it by something like keys.Find(AddressOf FindByOldKeyAndName(Name,OldVal)) however when i do this i get compiler errors. How do i call this method and pass in the values?

• Where to start building a BaaS

  I'm building a Cloud Platform, and the next phase of design involves building an extensible BaaS back end. (see http://youtu.be/lNi-05-PyEw) The reason I think we can attempt this, is there are dozens of these kinds of extensible back end data proxy's popping up almost daily at this point, which tells me the enabling technology is there to build one from scratch in a few months. I'd like to start in the right area: What kind of Dev background should I look for? What kind of tech stack should I build on? What kind of costs can I expect in terms of man-hours, etc... I know there isn't one right answer here, but I think this is the right sub to post this in, and credit will go towards to most constructive answer.

My C++ guts tell me that runner object should be destroyed after RunSomethingASync is finished. Am I right? What happens then to the method running on different thread? Or perhaps it is other way around and runner will not be collected? That would be a problem considering I may call RunSomethingASync() many times.

How has it affected your business in the following ways: Ability to launch and iterate over business driven logic Ability to have "business users" perform the actual modification of those rules rather than developers. Ability to comprehend the business rules in general. Quality of the software releases. More or less bugs from the end-user's POV? Speed of the applications. If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently? Lastly, I'm looking for a qualification of your answer w/ respect to the architecture. Would you do the same thing if you were deploying to a 1-machine setup vs. your architecture vs. a multi-tier cloud-based distributed architecture using 1000s of machines? How would it be different? • Jquery/Javascript gmail style stuff for message inbox, such as select all message using checkbox etc

  I am enjoying the fact that I'm here building a private message inbox for my website after building a full user signup/login and activation system when a few months ago I thought I wouldn't have enough patience to learn this stuff. Anyway to my question. I am currently building the private message inbox for my users and wondering if there are any jquery/javascript stuff I can use to make my inbox more like the gmail inbox. E.G. Gmail allows you to select all read messages or unread or starred or unstarred or none of the messages using a checkbox. I would like to add this kind of feature to my website and I'm sure the easiest way to achieve this would be using a jquery/javascript script. I would appreciate if someone could provide some links or info to where I can find several of these types of scripts to use with my inbox page. Thanks EDIT: Would also like to note that I would like the checkbox to be in a dropdown just like gmails.

  For my assignment we are suppose to make a clock. We need variables of hours, minutes, and seconds and methods like setHours/getHours, setMinutes/getMinutes, setSeconds/getSeconds. Now the parts of the assignment that I am having trouble on is that we need a addClock() method to make the sum of two clock objects and a tickDown() method which decrements the clock object and a tick() method that increments a Clock object by one second. Lastly, the part where I am really confused on is, I need to write a main() method in the Clock class to test the functionality of your objects with a separate Tester class with a main() method. • How to add new object to an IList mapped as a one-to-many with NHibernate?

  My model contains a class Section which has an ordered list of Statics that are part of this section. Leaving all the other properties out, the implementation of the model looks like this: public class Section { public virtual int Id { get; private set; } public virtual IList<Static> Statics { get; private set; } } public class Static { public virtual int Id { get; private set; } } In the database, the relationship is implemented as a one-to-many, where the table Static has a foreign key pointing to Section and an integer column Position to store its index position in the list it is part of. The mapping is done in Fluent NHibernate like this: public SectionMap() { Id(x => x.Id); HasMany(x => x.Statics).Cascade.All().LazyLoad() .AsList(x => x.WithColumn("Position")); } public StaticMap() { Id(x => x.Id); References(x => x.Section); } Now I am able to load existing Statics, and I am also able to update the details of those. However, I cannot seem to find a way to add new Statics to a Section, and have this change persisted to the database. I have tried several combinations of: mySection.Statics.Add(myStatic) session.Update(mySection) session.Save(myStatic) but the closest I have gotten (using the first two statements), is to an SQL exception reading: "Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'Position'". Clearly an INSERT is attempted here, but NHibernate does not seem to automatically append the index position to the SQL statement. What am I doing wrong? Am I missing something in my mappings? Do I need to expose the Position column as a property and assign a value to it myself? EDIT: Apparently everything works as expected, if I remove the NOT NULL constraint on the Static.Position column in the database. I guess NHibernate makes the insert and immediatly after updates the row with a Position value. While this is an anwers to the question, I am not sure if it is the best one. I would prefer the Position column to be not nullable, so I still hope there is some way to make NHibernate provide a value for that column directly in the INSERT statement. Thus, the question is still open. Any other solutions?

  Hi, I'm trying to add a "remember me" feature to my web app to let a user stay logged in between browser restarts. I think I got the bulk of it. I'm using google app engine for the backend which lets me use java servlets. The only frightening thing is what happens if someone finds out the value of the cookie? A malicious individual could set that cookie in their browser and access my site, and essentially be logged in as the user associated with it! On the same note, I guess this is why the cookie ids must be difficult to randomly generate, because a malicious user doesn't have to steal someone's cookie - they could just randomly assign cookie values and start logging in as whichever user happens to be associated with that cookie, if any, right? Scary stuff, I feel like I should at least include the username in the client cookie such that when it presents itself to the server, I won't auto-login unless the username+cookieid match in the DataStore. Any comments would be great, I'm new to this and trying to figure out a best practice. I'm not writing a site which contains any sensitive personal information, but I'd like to minimize any potential for abuse all the same, Thanks

• Should I use my domain registrar's nameserver or find an alternative?

  I've recently been moving my client's sites as well as my own and my friends to a cloud server instance I've set up. I don't have a nameserver setup on my instance because I'm not sure how to deploy and manage that side of things yet. I'm using the default nameservers where possible for the sites and just changing the A record DNS settings to point at the server. Some clients are complaining that the sites are running slower then before (since I changed nameservers back to the defaults). Some of the domain registrars are a nightmare to deal with and I can't convince some of my clients to leave them. Is there a sort of paid service I can use instead?

• How to get Firefox to not continue to show "Transferring data from..." in browser status bar after a

  The following silverlight demo loads and displays a text file from a server. However, in Firefox (but not Explorer or Chrome) after you click the button and the text displays, the status bar continues to show "Transferring data from test.development..." which erroneously gives the user the belief that something is still loading. I've noticed that if you click on another Firefox tab and then back on the original one, the message goes away, so it seems to be just a Firefox bug that doesn't clear the status bar automatically. Is there a way to clear the status bar automatically in Firefox? or a way to explicitly tell it that the async loading is finished so it can clear the status bar itself? Currently, it's simple enough to use like this: autolocker<some_lock_t> lock(&my_lock); // my_lock is of type "some_lock_t" but it is illegal to do: autolocker lock(&my_lock); // this would be ideal Is there anyway to get template type deduction to play nice with this (keep in my autolocker is non-copyable). Or is it just easiest to just specify the type?

Any user of my library will think it is possible to anything you can do with an IList if I set it as so, and that means adding elements. That is not true and I'm definitely breaking the contract exposing it as an IList. Am I right with this view or there is something else I am missing here?

• Implementing a scalable and high-performing web app

  I have asked a few questions on here before about various things relating to this but this is more of a consolidation question as I would like to check I have got the gist of everything. I am in the middle of developing a social media web app and although I have a lot of experience coding in Java and in PHP I am trying things a bit different this time. I have modularised each component of the application. So for example one component of the application allows users to private message each other and I have split this off into its own private messaging service. I have also created a user data service the purpose of which is to return data about the user for example their name, address, age etc etc from the database. Their is also another service, the friends service, which will work off the neo4j database to create a social graph. My reason for doing all this is to allow me up to update seperate modules when I need to - so while they mostly all run off MySQL right now I could move one to Cassandra later if I thought it approriate. The actual code of the web app is really just used for the final construction. The modules behind it dont really follow any strict REST or SOAP protocol. Basically each method on our API is turned into a PHP procedural script. This then may make calls to other back-end code which tends to be OO. The web app makes CURL requests to these pages and POSTs data to them or GETs data from them. These pages then return JSON where data is required. I'm still a little mixed up about how I actually identify which user is logged in at that moment. Do I just use sessions for that? Like if we called the get-messages.php script which equates to the getMessages() method for that user - returning all the private messages for that user - how would the back-end code know which user it is as posting the users ID to the script would not be secure. Anyone could do that and get all the messages. So I thought I would use sessions for it. Am I correct on this? Can anyone spot any other problems with what I am doing here? Thanks

• Unable to Calculate Position within Owner-Draw Text

  I'm trying to use Visual Studio 2012 to create a Windows Forms application that can place the caret at the current position within a owner-drawn string. However, I've been unable to find a way to accurately calculate that position. I've done this successfully before in C++. I've now tried numerous methods in C#. Originally, I tried using .NET classes to determine the correct position, but then I tried accessing the Windows API directly. In some cases, I came close, but after some time I still cannot place the caret accurately. I've created a small test program and posted key parts below. I've also posted the entire project here. The exact font used is not important to me; however, my application assumes a mono-spaced font. Any help is appreciated. • Combobox INotifyPropertyChanged event not raised!!!

  I created a combobox and set observable collection as the itemsource and implemented INotifyPropertyChanged on the observable collection item. Even after that, when I select different item in the combobox, the OnPropertyChange method is not invoked. I think I am not making the binding properly.
