  First of all we have just upoaded a new version of the Upgrade and Migration Workshop slides with some added information. So please feel free to download them from here.The slides have one new interesting information which lead to a discussion I've had in the past days with a very large customer regarding their upgrades - and internally on the mailing list targeting an EBS database upgrade from Oracle 10.2 to Oracle 11.2. Why are we creating dictionary statistics during upgrade? I'd believe this forced dictionary statistics creation got introduced with the desupport of the Rule Based Optimizer in Oracle 10g. The goal: as RBO is not supported anymore we have to make sure that the data dictionary has fresh and non-stale statistics. Actually that would have led in Oracle 9i to strange behaviour in some databases - so in Oracle 9i this was strongly disrecommended. The upgrade scripts got hardcoded to create these stats. But during tests we had the following findings: It's important to create dictionary statistics the night before the upgrade. Not two weeks before, not 60 minutes before your downtime begins. But very close to the upgrade. From Oracle 10g onwards you'd just say: $ execute DBMS_STATS.GATHER_DICTIONARY_STATS; This is important to make sure you have fresh dictionary statistics during upgrade for performance reasons. Tests have shown that running an upgrade without valid dictionary statistics might slow down the whole upgrade by factors of 2x-3x. And it would be also a great idea post upgrade to create again fresh dictionary statistics when you've did suppress the stats creation during the upgrade process. Suppress? Yes, you could set this underscore parameter in the init.ora: _optim_dict_stats_at_db_cr_upg=FALSE to suppress the forced dictionary statistics collection during an upgrade. We believe strongly that (a) people using the default statistics creation process which will create dictionary statistics by default and (b) create fresh stats before upgrade on the dictionary. Therefore we find it save once you have followed our advice to use the underscore during upgrade. And we've taken out that forced statistics collection during upgrade in the next release of the database. Please note: If you are using the DBUA for the upgrade it will remove underscore parameters for the upgrade run to improve performance - which is generally a good idea. So you'll have to start the DBUA with that call: $ dbua -initParam "_optim_dict_stats_at_cb_cr_upg"=FALSE -Mike

  I am in trouble. I placed and advt on a website in 2012 which said he has 950,000 unique visits each month so early in 2012 i advertised with them. The advertised didn't worked out so checked in 2-3 months time and i saw that the unique visitors on their site was 8,000 at that time.I immediately close the account I dont remember which site i was checking the unique visitors.That advt company has filed a dispute against me. So is there any tool that give me stats of 2012 of any website. i tried google trends but it doesnt show statistics .

• LCM says Smart List import is complete but actually its not...Here are probable reasons

  First of all some basics of smart list: Administrators use Smart Lists to create custom drop-down lists that users access from data form cells. When clicking in cells whose members are associated with a Smart List (as a member property), users select items from drop-down lists instead of entering data. Users cannot type in cells that contain Smart Lists. Smart Lists display in cells as down arrows that expand when users click into the cells. Below link will give you more information on Smart Lists: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/hp_admin/enum_pg.html I got a simple query today, "The LCM process generates and indicates a status of "Complete", however, the 3,018 records do not appear in the Planning application. No error exists in the log to identify the problem." Things which can be checked in this case: 1. Spaces are not allowed in the Entry Name, 2. Spaces are allowed in the Entry Label, 3. The name must start with an alpha character or underscore, 4. Valid characters for the remaining part of the name must be alpha, numeric, or an underscore, 5. Enter a name that is unique within the smart list, 6. I am not sure about the limits but I have seen 22,000 members loaded fine, 7. ID for every entry should be unique,  8. IDs need not to be consecutive, Ex: It was go from 1 to 100 then 500 to 900 then 1900 to 4500 etc. While import .xml file using LCM there were no errors in the foundation and LCM migration logs, but when checked in the HyS9PlanningSysErr.log, few errors were found:Ex: The name Data_Coord_(Prod)_ACS is invalid, The name Sr_Dir_b+Medcd_Gvt_Rel_Sls_Mkt is invalid, The name entered is invalid. Enter a name that is unique within the smart list, Also, we can Load Smart List dimensions and Smart List dimension entries using the /DS:HSP_SMARTLISTS parameter in outlineload utility: OutlineLoad /A:acpt /U:admin /M /I:c:/smartlist_create1.csv /DS:HSP_SMARTLISTS /L:c:/OutlineLogs/outlineLoad.log /X:c:/OutlineLogs/outlineLoad.exc SmartList Name, Operation, Label, Display Order, Missing Label, Use Form Missing Label, Entry ID, Entry Name, Entry Label SL1,addsmartlist,SL1Label,,,,,, SL1,addEntry,,,,,,entry1,entrylabel1 SL1,addEntry,,,,,,entry2,entrylabel2 Cheers..!!! • Licensing approach for .NET library that might be used desktop / web-service / cloud environment

  I am looking for advice how to architect licensing for a .NET library. I am not asking for tool/service recommendations or something like that. My library can be used in a regular desktop application, in an ASP.NET solution. And now Azure services come into play. Currently, for desktop applications the library checks if the application and company names from the version history are the same as the names the key was generated for. In other cases the library compares hardware IDs. Now there are problems: an Azure-enabled web-application can be run on different hardware each time (AFAIK) sometimes the hardware ID for the same hardware changes unexpectedly checking the hardware ID or version info might not be allowed in some circumstances (shared hosting for example) So, I am thinking about what approach I can take to architect a licensing scheme that: is friendly to customers (I do not try to fight piracy, but I do want to warn the customer if he uses the library on more servers than he paid for) can be used when there is no internet connection can be used on shared hosting What would you recommend?

• Create speed baseline for local web file

  Is there any tool or method that will load a localhost page a number of times, and return the averaged data for load times, onload events, Dom ready events, etc? I'd like to work on page speed optimization, but need a baseline before I begin. I have used both Google analytics and Webmaster tools, but I'd like an automated solutions that runs locally. My ideal solution would be a program or script that would take the path/file, number of iterations, and then take several minutes to load the page n times without cache and crunch numbers to create a baseline.

• Analyze Drupal and Wordpress sites CPU load in shared server

  Our hosting company is complaining that both our Drupal and Wordpress websites running in a shared server are consuming too many CPU resources. The traffic for each site is not more than 100 users per day and, at a first glance, we don't have very many plugins/add-ons. Is there any tool or resource to analyse what is causing that high CPU load? Thanks Update: We decided to suspend our accounts while the problem was being debugged but still our hosting (Site5) said that they saw unacceptable activity on our sites so we had to move to a dedicated server... asked them several times to provide us with more information and they always came back saying that we had to purchase a higher account. Finally decided to move to another hosting service.

• Is BDD actually writable by non-programmers?

  Behavior-Driven Development with its emblematic “Given-When-Then” scenarios syntax has lately been quite hyped for its possible uses as a boundary object for software functionality assessment. I definitely agree that Gherkin, or whichever feature definition script you prefer, is a business-readable DSL, and already provides value as such. However, I disagree that it is writable by non-programmers (as does Martin Fowler). Does anyone have accounts of scenarios being written by non-programmers, then instrumented by developers? If there is indeed a consensus on the lack of writability, then would you see a problem with a tool that, instead of starting with the scenarios and instrumenting them, would generate business-readable scenarios from the actual tests?

• Problem with homepage's SEO when using subfolders in a multi language website

  After watching a hundreds of threads about multilanguage website I haven't found an answer to my specific problem, so I think its not a common issue and I must have done something terribly wrong ;-) We have a brand.com website in DE main language and the following subfolders: /de/ = canonical of / + redirect to / /it/ /en/ When I crawl google.com for EN keywords or google.it for IT keywords then I get as results the homepage in German language (both title and description) as the top result with no trace of the /it/ or the /en/ homepage. Is this because /it/ and /en/ both needs a separate link building strategy? I've already configured Google webmaster tool into the following way: brand.com, no language preference brand.com/de/, de language brand.com/it/, it language brand.com/en/, en language Perhaps having "/" as DE main page is it wrong and I should use a different approach? i.e. like having "/" to be a 301 to /de/ instead ? Thanks in advance.

• Idoc Script Plug-in for Notepad++

  For those of you that caught it in an earlier post, Arnoud Koot wrote a great Idoc Script plug-in for Notepad++.  Well, he's back at it and has written an update for 11g! Arnoud made his announcement a few days ago on the WebCenter Content forum. And it looks like Jonathan Hult caught it as well and posted to his blog. A great addition to his plug-in is context sensitive help.  Now you can look up the variables and functions without having to switch to the formal Oracle documentation. He's even provided a tool to update the help automatically based on the Oracle documentation.  A couple of things to look for that I had missed the instructions was the note about updating the LanguageHelp.ini with your own path to the iDoc11g.chm file as well as the <ctrl><space> keystroke for the auto-complete. • GNOME 3.2 Menu Not Loading

  Gnome 3.2 Menu is not loading. I wanted to add a minimize and maximize to the right of my windows. So I did the following: gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout --type string "menu:minimize,maximize,close" logout and login that it per the instructions of this website: Instructions I logged out and back in and that was it. No menu. Help!!! By the way, there is a fix on this website to restore Gnome. However it did not work. Another odd thing was that Gnome Tweak Tool is black under the Shell Extension tab.

• Power management issues on an Asus N55

  I noticed that with respect to Win7 on my Asus N55 Ubuntu 12.04 tend to overheat the system. After startup the fan controller takes control of the fan, I could here it slowing down, after a few second following a login the fan increases its speed again. Though there are no processor hungry process: top shows only Xorg consuming 4%. Even with the system monitor the CPUs load look ok. Is it a power management related problem? This can cause battery life troubles in general, and electronics is never happy to be overheated. Is there a better tool to root the cause of the issue?

While I was using Windows it was very useful for me to find out the IP address of the person who was downloading from me, or to know IP address of any person on LAN who was using DC++ with some nick. And after that I can easily know the computer name of that person using nbtstat. I was wondering if there is any tool for Ubuntu using which I can find out the IP address of person who is downloading from me or from whom I am downloading on LAN. I am on university LAN and we are using PtokaX and DC++ for file sharing on LAN. people sometimes put some offencive stuff on open chat on DC++ using some Nick and I don't know how to trace them while I am using Ubuntu.

• How can I refactor client side functionality to create a product line-like generic design?

  Assume the following situation similar to that of Stack Overflow: I have a system with a front-end that can perform various manipulations on the data (by sending messages to REST back-end): Posting Editing and deleting Adding labels and tags Now in the first version we created it well modularized but the need as of now for 'evolving' the system similar to Stack Overflow. My question is how best to separate the commonality and how to incorporate the variability with respect to the following: Commonality: The above 'functionalities' and sending/receiving the data from the server Look and feel (also a variability as explained below) HTTP verbs associated with the above actions Variability: The RESTful URLs where the requests are sent The text/style of the UI (the commonality is analogous to Stack Overflow - the functionality of upvotes, posting a question remains the same, but the words, the icons, the look and feel is still different across sites) I think this is entirely a client-side code organization/refactoring issue. I'm heavily using jQuery, javascript and backbone for front-end development. My question is how best should I isolate the same to be able to create multiple such aspects to the tool we are currently working on?

• Getting Wacom Bamboo Pen + Touch pressure sensitivy in GIMP

  I've installed my Wacom Bamboo Pen + Touch (CTH-460) in Ubuntu (at least on one system, not another) and the pen works well for controlling the mouse cursor. However, I can't get pressure sensitivity to work in GIMP. I have 4 extra devices in the input devices settings screen now, two of which are the pen and eraser. I've set them both from Disabled to Screen, and left the default settings intact. However, after saving I still don't see any pressure options in the brush tool's options. I've also tried setting the mode to Window instead, but it makes no difference regarding pressure sensitivity. There are no other modes. The pressure works out-of-the-box in Blender (grease pen) so it must be something in GIMP. What can be wrong? Why don't the options appear? How can I debug this?
