• Rails: blank page - no errors or stack trace

  I've been trying to fix a bug in the Rails app I'm developing, and I keep getting a blank screen with no errors. I haven't found anything helpful in development.log, either (though it does show queries being run and such). Finally, I started to wonder if it's somehow set not to show errors anymore. I tried commenting out a necessary route, and sure enough, I got a blank page instead of the error and stack trace I expected. What might cause this? (I wondered if maybe I'm accidentally running production mode and errors aren't supposed to show then, but development.log is being appended, and if I open script/console and echo ENV['RAILS_ENV'], it says development.)

• Strange Recurrent Excessive I/O Wait

  I know quite well that I/O wait has been discussed multiple times on this site, but all the other topics seem to cover constant I/O latency, while the I/O problem we need to solve on our server occurs at irregular (short) intervals, but is ever-present with massive spikes of up to 20k ms a-wait and service times of 2 seconds. The disk affected is /dev/sdb (Seagate Barracuda, for details see below). Therefore, we did a sync and then this to flush the cache and buffers: echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches and directly afterwards the I/O wait and service times virtually went through the roof, and everything on the machine felt like slow motion. During the next few hours the latency recovered and everything was as before - small to medium lags in short, unpredictable intervals. Now my question is: does anybody have any idea what might cause this annoying behaviour? Is it the first indication of the disk array or the raid controller dying, or something that can be easily mended by rebooting? (At the moment we're very reluctant to do this, however, because we're afraid that the disks might not come back up again.) Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Chris. Edited to add: we do see one or two processes go to 'D' state in top, one of which seems to be kjournald rather frequently. If I'm not mistaken, however, this does not indicate the processes causing the latency, but rather those affected by it - correct me if I'm wrong. • Using Facebook Connect with jQTouch?

  Hi, i'm starting a new jQTouch-project now and i'm thinking of using facebook connect to make it easier for users to register with my site. do anyone have any experience with this? I'm using the Facebook PHP SDK (from github), and i first tried to use it with the built in example, it worked good. i later tried it with jQTouch (the latest build from the SVN). when i create the log in/log out link inside a ul.roundedli element it does not work because jQTouch have some special function that handles links clicked inside a li-element. how can i go around this function and make it work with the connect-link, i'm using the display=touch version of the autentication dialog. when i add the link outside of the ul.roundedli-element it works in desktop safari but not in mobile safari. any ideas?

I saw that we can use distint ways to calculcate the triangles. I will make the size of the triangles equal till 1kz and after that obtained with log function. What should we do now? With the frequency spectrum and the triangles defined.. - We should filter the frequency (frequencies limited to the triangles, if goes higher only counts till the triangle limit) and calculate the value of each triangle (and after that continue the algorithm). But when does the mel conversation happens? m = 2595 log (f/700 + 1) When do we pass from frequency to mel.. Can someone guide me in the right direction plz :d

• memcpy segmentation fault on linux but not os x

  I'm working on implementing a log based file system for a file as a class project. I have a good amount of it working on my 64 bit OS X laptop, but when I try to run the code on the CS department's 32 bit linux machines, I get a seg fault. The API we're given allows writing DISK_SECTOR_SIZE (512) bytes at a time. Our log record consists of the 512 bytes the user wants to write as well as some metadata (which sector he wants to write to, the type of operation, etc). All in all, the size of the "record" object is 528 bytes, which means each log record spans 2 sectors on the disk. The first record writes 0-512 on sector 0, and 0-15 on sector 1. The second record writes 16-512 on sector 1, and 0-31 on sector 2. The third record writes 32-512 on sector 2, and 0-47 on sector 3. ETC. So what I do is read the two sectors I'll be modifying into 2 freshly allocated buffers, copy starting at record into buf1+the calculated offset for 512-offset bytes. This works correctly on both machines. However, the second memcpy fails. Specifically, "record+DISK_SECTOR_SIZE-offset" in the below code segfaults, but only on the linux machine. Running some random tests, it gets more curious. The linux machine reports sizeof(Record) to be 528. Therefore, if I tried to memcpy from record+500 into buf for 1 byte, it shouldn't have a problem. In fact, the biggest offset I can get from record is 254. That is, memcpy(buf1, record+254, 1) works, but memcpy(buf1, record+255, 1) segfaults. Does anyone know what I'm missing? • Microsoft Researchers shows off best Touch Screen ever made. Better than Apple touch screens!

  All the touch devices we have in market today like iPads, iPhones, Samsung tablets and phones, etc.  have a very small issue – 100 milliseconds of lag. The lag is the amount of time a touch device takes to respond after you touch the device. The 100 milliseconds of lag may not be an issue when you are tapping and swapping the interface elements on a device, but they are apparent when you wing your finger around the screen faster. For example if you use any painting app, the lag is very obvious and screen responds slowly than an artist can paint with his finger. Researchers at Microsoft labs came out with a prototype of touch device that drastically cuts down the 100 milliseconds of lag time to just 1 millisecond. That’s 100 times faster than today’s touch screen devices. Check out the video embedded below for a demo of new touch screen. Over at TechCrunch, Chris Velazco says: The difference is staggering, especially when Dietz trots out the slow-motion footage. With the delay between touch input and screen response slashed by orders of magnitude, a device that sports the sort of super-low-latency Dietz envisions has the potential to feel far more (for lack of a better term) natural than its brethren. There’s zero delay when you slide a checker across a board, for example, and bringing that sort of instantaneous feedback to the many screens in our lives could help to bridge the gap between operating a bit of software and the feeling of interacting with objects.   It will be great boost to Microsoft’s tablet strategy if they succeed in bringing this research into mass market and allow it’s partners to use the technology on Windows 8 tablets.

• Add columns to SqlWebEventProvider

  In an asp.net application, we'd like to use the SqlWebEventProvider to log any Event that occurs during the application lifetime. The problem is that we think that the table aspnet_WebEvent_Event doesn't provide enough columns and should log more information (we need to keep the Logged user). I'm aware that this information could be stored in the "Details" column but it wouldn't then be really simple to filter the results and build reports. So I'm searching for a simple solution to add a column. I wish I could derive SqlWebEventProvider but the methods used to build the stocked procedure parameters are private (PrepareParams() and FillParams()). Any simple solution that doesn't imply to rewrite the entire Provider class ?

• Mac OS X bash prompt bug?

  I am trying to set my bash prompt to display the time and current directory in bold: export PS1="\[\e[1m\][\A] \w \$ \[\e[0m\]" This does apparently work, but when I use the command history (ctrl-r), after finding the command I was searching for and pressing enter, this line is not displayed correctly. Here is an example: [21:58] ~/Wyona/svn-repos/zwischengas $ (reverse-i-search)`ta': tail -F logs/log4j-cnode1.log becomes, after pressing enter: [21:58] ~/Wyona/svn-repos/zwischengas $ -F logs/log4j-cnode1.log Of course, this is not "really" a problem, since the command does work correctly, but it is still annoying. Does anybody know why this happens? And, more importantly, how to prevent/fix it? Thanks, Memo

• valueOf() vs. toString() in Javascript

  In Javascript every object has a valueOf() and toString() method. I would have thought that the toString() method got invoked whenever a string conversion is called for, but apparently it is trumped by valueOf(). For example, the code var x = {toString: function() {return "foo"; }, valueOf: function() {return 42; }}; window.console.log ("x="+x); window.console.log ("x="+x.toString()); will print x=42 x=foo This strikes me as backwards .. if x were a complex number, for example, I would want valueOf() to give me its magnitude (so that zero would become special), but whenever I wanted to convert to a string I would want something like "a+bi". And I wouldn't want to have to call toString() explicitly in contexts that implied a string. Is this just the way it is?

• Unit Test ouput in MSBuild/TFS 2008

  I have a build in TFS 2008 which includes the running of a UnitTest project. I have configured my build as such that in the drop folder after each build, I get a StyleCop.log, FxCop.log and would like to place the trx or output from the unit tests here also. I can see that my unit tests are running as part of the build, however currently I cannot find were the output is saved to or find a way of setting the ouput to my drop location ($(DropLocation)\$(BuildNumber)\MyUnitTests.txt) My unit tests are included by using the following:- <RunTest>true</RunTest> ... <ItemGroup> <TestContainer Include="$(OutDir)\%2aMyUnitTests.dll" /> </ItemGroup> Can somebody help explain how I can achieve this.

• Logging extra fields with Elmah Error Table?

  I want to add my own session variable to elmah error log table and display it. I already have modified the source code and added the new fields to Error.cs and other fields but I don't know but when I assign an HttpContext.Current.Session["MyVar"].tostring() value to my field in the constructor it stops logging exceptions and does not log any exception. I just need to get the value of the session variable is there other way for this. I read a post which he added fields for the email but it does not say where exactly should I get the session value.

• Apache mod_rewrite and multiple domains

  Hi, I'm trying to use mod_rewrite to map multiple domains to different servlets on one host. Example: www.dom1.com - 192.168.1.n/dom1 www.dom2.com - 192.168.1.n/dom2 ... I'm using the mod_rewrite and mod_proxy and directive but it seems that the reverse mapping via ProxyPassReverse doesn't work as I expected. ProxyPassReverse /subdomain.domain.com http://192.168.1.n/subdomain doesn't work. I've turned rewrite-logging on with RewriteLog /var/log/rewrite.log From the logs I'd say that rewriting works and the problem seems to be with reverse mapping. However I can't see any Reverse mapping entries. It seems that reverse mapping isn't logged or needs a different command to be activated. (Apache and the servlet container are on different machines but this should not matter I'd think ?)

• In Subversion, I know when a file was added, what's the quickest way to find out when it was deleted

  OK, so suppose I know I added file "foo.txt" to my Subversion repository at revision 500. So I can do a svn log -v http://svnrepo/path/foo.txt@500, and that shows all the files added at the same time. What's the fastest way to find when the file was deleted after it was added? I tried svn log -r500:HEAD -v http://svnrepo/path/foo.txt@500, but that gives me "path not found" - perhaps obviously, because the file "foo.txt" doesn't exist at "HEAD". I can try a binary search algorithm going forward through revisions (and that would certainly be faster than typing this question), but is there a better way?
