• Navingating to an .html file in the assembly

  I’m working with the WPF WebBrowser control to navigate to a html page hosting Silverlight. It seems I cannot use the NavigateToString or NavigateToStream method since I have Silverlight content. The html content loads fine but not Silverlight. So I think I’ll have to use the Navigate method which takes an Uri. Now I html page I’d like to navigate to is in a .html file in my Visual Studio project so I will have to have a local uri of some sort. I don’t want the html file to be copied to the output folder since I don’t want to distribute it separately; I want it to be somehow included in the assembly. The problem is that the WebBrowser control doesn’t seem to allow relative Uris or pack://application: uris. How could I accomplish navingating to an .html file in the assembly?

• How do I ignore the Perl shebang on Windows with Apache 2?

  I have set up a local Perl web environment on my Windows machine. The application I'm working on is originally from a Linux server, and so the shebang for source .pl files look like so: #!/usr/bin/perl This causes the following error on my Windows dev machine: (OS 2)The system cannot find the file specified. Is it possible to change my Apache 2 conf so that the shebang is ignored on my Windows machine? Of course I could set the shebang to #!c:\perl\bin\perl.exe, that much is obvious; but the problem comes to deploying the updated files. Clearly it would be very inconvenient to change this back on each deploy. I am using ActivePerl on Windows 7. Update: I should have mentioned that I need to keep the shebang so that the scripts will work on our shared hosting Linux production server. If I did not have this constraint and I didn't have to use the shebang, the obvious answer would be to just not use it.

• Can I make a folder writeable in Medium trust?

  My web app writes to several folders (logs, uploads, etc), and I've always set these permissions manually through my hosting provider. I'd like to create a setup script that performs this on new installations. Is this possible under Medium trust? I can't even call File.GetAccessControl, let alone File.SetAccessControl, but I don't need such a "big hammer", anyway. I just want to do what the ISP (in this case GoDaddy) is letting me do through a management console. I believe PHP is able to do this, and I'd be willing to consider a PHP page for this purpose if that's possible.

The geokit-rails plugin supports a similar concept, using its ':through' relationship.   I am creating solution and inside I have three projects: A WCF Service Library Project A DataAccess Project (Class Library) A Web site for hosting WCF service The implementation of the service is on the project # 1, but in order to access the DataBase I use a second project that implements the data access using a class library project. That problem is in order to get data access I need to configure a connection string, but that connection string must be configurable in a production environment, I meant in production I am going to deploy the site, which is a very simple project that contains only a reference WCF Service Library Project then a guy from database department will configure the connection string. In development I have an app.config on the data access project but when I do the release that app.config is embedded on the dll. Any ideas how can we achieve our purpose

• What is the big deal with SSL?

  What is the big deal with SSL? My interenet website hosting provider has sold me an SSL line. All I know is that for what I want to do with PayPal, I need to have a folder that is denoted beginning with https:// and this is what an SSL line is. But it seems that they have a hard time setting it up. I wonder if I can just go ahead and do it for myself. I mean, some third party has send me confirmation and even what seems to be some sort of long numeric certificate.

• What open source database platform is most easily transferred from my personal machine into a window

  I would like eventual interaction with MS Dynamics SL and/or MindTouch Core (running on WMware) for eventual intranet and/or internet display. I guess I am asking for front and back end recommendations for a database I am constructing, but since this is my first major project I would greatly appreciate any help and advice. I would also love an opportunity to learn a new language so the code base could be in any language. I do have a few more related questions for discussion; What is the viability of using Google hosting to provide the service to the public for free? Should I implement plone or another CMS if I have a large amount of output? Is there a structuring questionnaire or standards publication I could reference? Does UML diagramming provide additional options for portability? Thank you.

• Has anyone run VxWorks on a desktop PC as a target

  Can I use a desktop PC to run VxWorks as the operating system? In other words, can a standard PC be used as a target processor? I'm not talking about hosting Workbench and a VxSim on the same machine. Rather, I'm considering running just VxWorks (and my application) on a PC. It seems feasible as long as we can configure a board support package, and write or obtain device drivers for the I/O cards on the PCI bus. What I wonder is, has anyone actually done this? I'm interested in saving a bit of money on hardware over a single board computer and cPCI backplane by using a spare desktop sitting around unused. The application is for a test set to be used in a lab. So, I don't need the portability, etc. of a typical embedded processor.

• Linux - Create ftp account with read/write access to only 1 folder

I have never worked on linux and dont plan on working on it either - The only command I probably know is "ls" :) I am hosting my website on Eapps and use their cpanel to setup everything so never worked with linux. Now I have this one time case - where I need to provide access to a contractor to fix the CSS issues on my website. He basically needs FTP (read/write) access to certain folders. At a high level - this is my code structure /home/webadmin/example.com/html/images /css /js /login.php /facebook.php /home/webadmin/example.com/application/library /views /models /controllers /config /bootstrap.php /home/webadmin/example.com/cgi-bin I want the new user to be able to have access to only these folders /home/webadmin/example.com/html/js /home/webadmin/example.com/html/css /home/webadmin/example.com/application/views He should not be able to view even the content of other folders including files like bootstrap.php or login.php etc If any sys admins can help me set this account up - will really appreciate it. • serving js libraries: better performance from google code or using asset packager?

  I am working on a rails application that uses big javascript libraries (e.g. jquery UI), and I also have a handful of my own javascript files. I'm using asset packager to package up my own javascript. I'm considering two ways of serving these files: Link to the jQuery libraries from Google Code as described at http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxlibs/documentation/#jquery , and separately package up and serve my javascript files using asset packager. Host the jquery libraries myself, and package them together with my own javascript as one big merged javascript file. My hosting solution is of course not going to beat out Google's content delivery network, so at first I assumed that end users would experience faster page loads via option #1. However, it also occured to me that if I serve them myself, users would only need to issue one request to get the merged javascript (as opposed to one for my merged javascript and another for the libraries served by google). Which approach will provide the best end-user experience (presumably in the form of faster load times?)

  I would like to know more about the relevant skills in the arsenal of a Data Scientist, and with new technologies coming in every day, how one picks and chooses the essentials. A few ideas germane to this discussion: Knowing SQL and the use of a DB such as MySQL, PostgreSQL was great till the advent of NoSql and non-relational databases. MongoDB, CouchDB etc. are becoming popular to work with web-scale data. Knowing a stats tool like R is enough for analysis, but to create applications one may need to add Java, Python, and such others to the list. Data now comes in the form of text, urls, multi-media to name a few, and there are different paradigms associated with their manipulation. What about cluster computing, parallel computing, the cloud, Amazon EC2, Hadoop ? • Use of COM object in IIS 7

  Hi all, I am currently moving an ASP.NET web-project from an IIS 6 to a IIS 7 hosting environment. Everything seems to be running OK, except my calls to a COM object. I can perfectly instantiate an object of the COM type, but when I call one of its methods, the IIS crashes. The event log reports an error code "0xc0000374", which indicates a heap corruption. When I run the application inside the visual studio development server, everything goes well and the COM object code gets executed without any errors. This is also the case when the application is hosted on an IIS 6 machine. I have looked through all settings of the IIS 7 and have not found anything configurable for COM objects, like security or ... I have been struggling with this for a while and I'm out of ideas. Does anyone have any experience deploying COM objects on IIS 7? Your help would be very appreciated!

• ASP.NET MVC project won't start under IIS 5.1 on Windows XP SP3

  I've a ASP.NET MVC 2 project that runs fine under Windows 7 and will start on Windows XP if I use the Visual Studio Development Server, however, starting under IIS generates an error: Unable to start debugging on the web server With the message The specified procedure could not be found No errors in the system event viewer. If I start without debugging I get an "HTTP 500 Internal Server Error" The reason I run it under IIS is the project also includes some WCF wsHttp web services that use certificates, so the VS Development Server is not adequate for hosting those. I have already seen the links on SO that talk about adding the wildcard mapping. I've already done that, just as I've done on Windows Server 2003 where I successfully host ASP.NET MVC RC2 for quite a while.

I think i can run any exe and installed anything however azure is going to recycle this and if yes then what happened on recycling? can i use new window server 2012 (VHD) in that? Azure website & VM both are in preview mode so is it reliable to use it as production version?

  Hi, We are starting a very large web based service project. We are trying to decide what hosting environment to use. We would really like to use Google App Engine for scalability reasons and to eliminate the need to deal with servers ourselves. Secure logins/registrations is very important to us, as well as using our own domain. Our target audience is not very computer savvy. For this reason, we don't want to have the users have to sign up with OpenID as this can't be done within our site. We also do not want to force our customers to sign up with Google. As far as I can see, I am out of luck. I am hoping to have a definite answer to this question. Can I have an encrypted login to our site accessed via our domain, without having to send the customers to another site for the login (OpenID/Google). Thanks.

  I'm working on an embedded system which is going to be booting and hosting it's rootfs on an SSD disk. We are currently looking at using Intel X-18M SSDs. The file system structure will have a fairly static /usr section (modulo software upgrades) and an active /var and /var/log for maintaining state and logging. Given the wear-levelling done by the underlying flash does having separate partitions help or hinder? As modern SSDs appear as straight block devices and hide their mapping magic behind their firmware is there any point trying to optimise the choice of file-system that sits on-top of the SSD? Finally does enable SMART monitoring make any sense in this context or are their SSD specific ways of determining the underlying health of the storage hardware?

• Run WF 4.0 as a server-side component

  Hi all, For a new project, we need to use WF 4.0 for deploying and running workflows. Instead of hosting workflows within the application itself, we decided to implement a server-side component that is in charge of running workflows. Before WF 4.0, one had explicit access to the the runtime engine (WorkflowRuntime), which provided some basic management functionalities, such as retrieving the workflows currently running etc ... As far as I could find out, WF 4.0 lacks this explicit access, as workflows are created via the WorkflowInstance class and no reference is immediately available to the WorkflowRuntime ... If I need these management functionalities on the server side, I'm a correct that I will need to implement these myself? Or did I miss out on something ... Thanks in advance for your answers!

Which one do you think is best for starting to do real world coding the fastest? I really think coding from your browser will make programming more accessible to the public. Are there any out there that use a vim style, (e.g. jsvi) in combination with free server side hosting? The last time I looked at Bespin it was a little green. Are there others?

• Mono and Apache are serving files with no ASP.NET processing

  On a new Rackspace Cloud Server box (Ubuntu 9.10), I've installed apache2, libapache2-mod-mono, and mod-mono-server2. I've disabled mod_mono and enabled mod_mono_auto, but whatever I do, requests for Default.aspx return the actual contents of Default.aspx (in this case, "This is a marker file generated by the precompilation tool, and should not be deleted!") I've installed XSP, and it looks like it works okay, but I'd like to use Apache with mod_mono (seems a more common configuration) if I can get it running. However, this is no error messages and no hints, with Google obviously not terribly helpful. What else can I look for to make sure I'm configured correctly? How can I test further?
