  • How to optimize this script

    I have written the following script. It opens a file, reads each line from it splitting by new line character and deleting first character in line. If line exists it's being added to array. Next each element of array is splitted by whitespace, sorted alphabetically and joined again. Every line is printed because script is fired from console and writes everything to file using standard output. I'd like to optimize this code to be more pythonic.   • How to figure out "progress" while sorting?

    I'm using stable_sort to sort a large vector. The sorting takes on the order of a few seconds (say, 5-10 seconds), and I would like to display a progress bar to the user showing how much of the sorting is done so far. But (even if I was to write my own sorting routine) how can I tell how much progress I have made, and how much more there is left to go? I don't need it to be exact, but I need it to be "reasonable" (i.e. reasonably linear, not faked, and certainly not backtracking).

    I am trying to run a java command like this in a PHP Joomla Component. It works, however, the files generated from the command are written to /administrator and I want them to be written to the location where the Java command resides ie. /administrator/com_mycomponent/java/MyJavaApp.jar //run the command $javaCommand = "$javaCommand -jar $keyGeneratorFile $appName"; $response = exec($javaCommand); if(empty($response)) { JError::raiseError(500, "Key Generation failed for command: $javaCommand"); } What can I do?   • Using Large Arrays in VB.NET

    I want to extract large amounts of data from Excel, manipulate it and put it back. I have found the best way to do this is to extract the data from an Excel Range in to a large array, change the contents on the array and write it back to the Excel Range. I am now rewriting the application using VB.NET 2008/2010 and wish to take advantage of any new features. Currently I have to loop through the contents of the array to find elements with certain values; also sorting large arrays is cumbersome. I am looking to use the new features, including LINQ to manipulate the data in my array. Does anybody have any advice on the easiest ways to filter / query, sort etc. data in a large array. Also what are the reasonable limits to the size of the array? ~Many Thanks

  • What do I need to learn to make a website that can make a text file?

    I want to make a website, but all I know is basic HTML and CSS. On this website, I want the user to input in multiple text fields (sort of like they take a quiz) and then the program will make a text file based on the user input which the user can download. I want it to work backwards, too, so that the text file is the input. What do I need to learn to make a website to do this? Will javascript do the trick? I'm a beginning to intermediate programmer, mainly with java and I've learned some C# recently. I thought I could learn ASP.Net for this, but it turns out my hosting doesn't support it.

It still contains the unsorted rows. How can I get the right column?

  • Django: ordering numerical value with order_by

    I'm in a situation where I must output a quite large list of objects by a CharField used to store street addresses. My problem is, that obviously the data is ordered by ASCII codes since it's a Charfield, with the predictable results .. it sort the numbers like this; 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 2, 20, 21.... Now the obvious step would be to change the Charfield the proper field type (IntegerField let's say), however it cannot work since some address might have apartments .. like "128A". I really don't know how I can order this properly ..

  • How to read any email account from a domain using C#?

    I guess this is sort of two questions that are tied together. Related questions have discussed how to read and parse email using pop3. I need to be able to do this, however, I want this to be able to work with any email address I need. I am trying to allow users to submit content by emailing it to a unique email address, which will automatically know to which account the content should be associated. Is there a good way to create these email addresses on the fly and check these email accounts so for content submissions? Alternatively is there a way to make a "wildcard" email account which gets all of the email sent to the domain and allows me to see what the to address was?

    I'm trying to do an animation where when a person clicks from point A to Point B on screen the object should slowly slide straight across (horizontally) from point A to Point B.     I'm trying to figure out what this sort of thing is called, and eventually how I can create one in a web browser. It looks like this (screenshot of the first app that came to mind): The specific component/pattern I'm looking for is the two list boxes ("Included Gear" and "Excluded Gear") that represent inclusion/exclusion of items from a set. I'm not really looking for the WPF name (if there is one) but it might be helpful. I am looking for the name of this thingy, if there is one, and if you really want to make my day, you can point me toward a jQuery or YUI way of making one of these dealies in a browser. In case you were wondering, the screenshot is a World of Warcraft gear optimization program. Go figure why it was the first program that came to mind when I was trying to think of an example.

  • Git is deleting an ignored file when i switch branches

    I have one branch (let's call it B) that ignores a certain file, which isn't ignored in some other branches (eg branch A). When i switch from branch B to branch A, then back to B again, the file has been deleted. Is this normal? I can sort of see how it would happen, in the sense that branch B thinks it's not there, and branch A thinks that it is, so when i go back to B it 'tidies it away'. But it's kind of annoying. Any suggestions? thanks, max

    I know this is quite a vague question -- sorry about that. If I have a forum, shoutbox or something similar where users enter and submit data, running on PHP and MySQL, what is the best way to have the newly submitted content automatically display on the page for all users when it is submitted? Much like a live newsfeed, if you like... The effect sort-of works here at stackoverflow, when you are answering a question you are told when new answer is submitted. I want to test for newly submitted content and then display it automatically. Any suggestions? Many thanks :)

  • How do I show the number of images attached to a post on the image attachment page?

    I use the image attachment page to show images attached to a post one by one, in a slideshow sort of affect. I'd like to be able to display the total number of images attached to the parent post and the number of the particular image that's being shown on any given attachment page so you see the picture and the words "Image 3 of 15" for example. I've played around with some different code and can get the total number of images to show on the post page, but when I insert the code on the attachment page template it always shows "1 of 1." I was having this problem a while ago and decided to re-address it, unfortunately I don't have the original code that I used and can't remember it. Anyone have any suggestions?

  • merging 3 source versioned trees into 1

    This is probably an easy question... I have 4 source versions of the same software in 4 different directories. I have just started using git for version control. To date, I have just been snapping a desperate copy rolling forward. I want to merge all versions (1.0.0.1, 1.0.0.2, 1.0.0.3, 1.0.1.0) together so that I will have a reference history. Opposed to just starting out with 1.0.1.0 as the initial version. I want to get this sort of thing right form the start. Can someone outline the basic steps to accomplish this? Thanks much, XO

  • html links & hover events over certain locations on an image.

    So i created a web site a long time ago using a designer alot like frontpage + expression design put together, and since then Ive gotten more into coding, and I'm learning html, CSS, and all that good stuff.. and i have this re-designed header that Ive made here: http://prntscr.com/8zct So what I need to know, is how i can get it so that when a user clicks on one of the links in the header design it will redirect to a page. and also if possible, how to make it so when a user hovers over a link a drop down may appear with other options. As me being quite new to this sort of stuff, could anybody help me achieve this? PS. I'm working in Visual Studio with ASP. but that doesn't change anything about the html and css stuff. just letting you guys know.

  • Is there a generic open-source reporting system out there?

    I recently started a position at a new company, and one of the first projects they want is an internal reporting system that points at database A, B, C and reports various metrics/statistics/predictions. Basically, the same thing I've done or worked on and every company I've ever been hired by. Since this gets a bit boring after a while, I was wondering if there already exists some sort of open-source package that accomplishes this goal. Ideally, it would work with multiple databases out-of-box (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle minimally), determine relationships between tables (either automatically from their schemas, or allow you to manually set them up after pooling all the tables), allow you to create reports based on a subset of tables, customizing what data you wanted to be displayed/calculated (I suppose this would be challenging since you've no idea what every audience wants, and would need to make this flexible) I'm debating making something like this in my spare time if one does not already exist. Just curious.

So how to: Center a div across all browsers and behind this div put a transparent background covering entire screen of browser.   • How to access the service instance from host object in WCF?

    I am trying to incarnate some sort of ad hoc WCF service. I already managed to launch it and make it call its own web methods as some other guy's methods. The issue that I am facing is instance management. I have set [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.Single)] so it now has a global instance with the same properties for all clients. But besides that I need it to call other services of its kind while listening to incoming requests from clients (similar crazy services). While debugging I noticed that the ServiceHost's constructor calls the constructor of the service class. So, I assumed it has access to the global instance of this class and I need to find a way to call methods of this instance. Please don't ask what I have been smoking, I just have to make it ad hoc.

    This is one of an interview question which I had recently. I would like to know others perception of approach for this problem. Question: You are given a structure which holds an employee details with two elements as int Deptartment and string Name. struct Employee { string Name; int Dept; } You are given details of N Employees among which there are N/2 employees Dept are 0's and N/2 employees dept are 1's arranged in some random order. You need to sort the employee details based on their Dept value and it should be stable i.e., the order of 1s and 0s in the original record should be maintained. For example, given the following sample data: Name Dept X1 0 X2 1 X3 0 X4 1 X5 0 after sorting the result should be: Name Dept X2 1 X4 1 X1 0 X3 0 X5 0 The algorithm should be stable and the complexity should be o(N), with constant space for additional variables (which means sorting should be done in-place).
