• How to provide Input to Dialogs designed by Qt Designer

  Hello, I am a Qt beginner and working with Qt Designer to develop some small UI elements. I read http://doc.trolltech.com/4.5/designer-using-a-ui-file.html to use these GUI elements in my code and using multiple inheritance approach. I am introducing bookmark feature which somewhat look like http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/3041/screenshotyb.png. Now the problem I am facing is How can I show all existing bookmark folders in the drop down(say folders are in a QVector). So my main problem is how can I pass some inputs to the UI element. • Compiling scipy on Windows 32-bit

  Has anyone tried compiling SciPy on Windows using numpy-1.3.0 that was built with the pre-built ATLAS libraries (atlas3.6.0_WinNT_P4SSE2.zip) linked in the installation document. • How to instantly termainate an un-supervised script on demand?

  I have a GUI which resembles an interpreter. It allows the user to write a script in Jython (implementation of Python in Java) and run it whenever he wants. Apart from that, I also wish to allow the user to instantly terminate the run whenever he wants. Thing is, I don't really know how to do it. The script is being run on a different Thread, but I don't know of any secure way to stop/interrupt/terminate a thread in the middle of its run, let alone not knowing what is being run by the thread/script (it could be a simple task or maybe some sort of a heavy SQL query against a DB, and a DB is something which requires careful resource handling). How can I instantly terminate such run on demand?

  Can you cast an object to one that implements an interface? Right now, I'm building a GUI, and I don't want to rewrite the Confirm/Cancel code (A confirmation pop-up) over and over again. So, what I'm trying to do is write a class that gets passed the class it's used in and tells the class whether or not the user pressed Confirm or Cancel. The class always implements a certain interface. • Transitioning from desktop app written in C++ to a web-based app

  We have a mature Windows desktop application written in C++. The application's GUI sits on top of a windows DLL that does most of the work for the GUI (it's kind of the engine). It, too, is written in C++. We are considering transitioning the Windows app to be a web-based app for various reasons. What I would like to avoid is having to writing the CGI for this web-based app in C++. That is, I would rather have the power of a 4G language like Python or a .NET language for creating the web-based version of this app. So, the question is: given that I need to use a C++ DLL on the backend to do the work of the app what technology stack would you recommend for sitting between the user's browser and are C++ dll? We can assume that the web server will be Windows. Some options: Write a COM layer on top of the windows DLL which can then be access via .NET and use ASP.NET for the UI Access the export DLL interface directly from .NET and use ASP.NET for the UI. Write a custom Python library that wraps the windows DLL so that the rest of the code can be written. Write the CGI using C++ and a C++-based MVC framework like Wt Concerns: I would rather not use C++ for the web framework if it can be avoided - I think languages like Python and C# are simply more powerful and efficient in terms of development time. I'm concerned that my mixing managed and unmanaged code with one of the .NET solutions I'm asking for lots of little problems that are hard to debug (purely anecdotal evidence for that) Same is true for using a Python layer. Anything that's slightly off the beaten path like that worries me in that I don't have much evidence one way or the other if this is a viable long term solution.

• Should I strip the XML declaration from suds output before parsing with lxml?

  I’m trying to implement a SOAP webservice in Python 2.6 using the suds library. That is working well, but I’ve run into a problem when trying to parse the output with lxml. Suds returns a suds.sax.text.Text object with the reply from the SOAP service. The suds.sax.text.Text class is a subclass of the Python built-in Unicode class. In essence, it would be comparable with this Python statement: u'<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?><root><lotsofelements \></root>' Which is incongrous, since if the XML declaration is correct, the contents are UTF-8 encoded, and thus not a Python Unicode object (because those are stored in some internal encoding like UCS4). lxml will refuse to parse this, as documented, since there is no clear answer to what encoding it should be interpreted as. As I see it, there are two ways out of this bind: Strip the <?xml> declaration, including the encoding. Convert the output from Suds into a bytestring, using the specified encoding. Currently, the data I’m receiving from the webservice is within the ASCII-range, so either way will work, but both feels very much like ugly hacks to me, and I’m not quite sure what would happen, if I start to receive data that would need a wider range of Unicode characters. Any good ideas? I can’t imagine I’m the first one in this position…

  i received a big book full of processes. i was thinking about the end user (they will be lawyers) and decided the best GUI would be showing activity diagrams or business processes. It reminded me Quickbooks and how non-accountants can successfully use it and understand accounting processes. i began doing research before sending my project to a bunch of programmers: is there some open source solution? can i use MS Visio libraries? which UML tool is programable? what about Eclipse and its modeling tools? etc etc the key points here are: relationships between events, artifacts, actors, etc should be stored in a database. processes or steps in a process should be easily modified by updating the database do this sounds too crazy? (should I explain a bit more why it must be programmed this way?)

• Clean way to display/hide a bunch of buttons based on a ComboBox selection

  I'm writing a standalone application in VB.NET using Visual Studio 2005. I want to display/hide a bunch of Buttons based on the selected value of a ComboBox. Each selection would have a different set of Buttons to display, and I'd like to have them arranged in a nice grid. Driving a TabControl with the ComboBox value would be the kind of behavior I want, but I don't want it to look like a TabControl to the user because it might be confusing. Is there a way to do this? Basically, I'd like Selection1 of the ComboBox to show Buttons 1-4, Selection2 to show Buttons 5-11, Selection3 to show (maybe) Buttons 1, 3, 5, 6, and 8, etc., have them arranged nicely, and have the GUI show only the ComboBox and the buttons. • How to disable UI control based on domain object's state?

  Here's my problem. I have a somewhat complex domain object, which, depending on its state, responds to certain actions. I think the state pattern is pretty much the solution for that. However, I need to display which actions are possible at any moment in the UI. Ex: The domain object is an audio player. Some songs can't be skipped (like ads), so I need to disable the "next" and "previous" buttons in the GUI so the user have some kind of feedback of which action he can execute. I've looked at Swing's Action class (note: this is not a Java project), but I think I would need to keep every Actions in my domain object class (audio player), so it can enable or disable them depending on its own state (thus, affecting the UI). Is it the way to do it?

• why message box is always hidden behind main dialog and cannot be shown on the top

  I am using MFC to write a GUI application. I chose dialog-based application, and put picture control, edit box and buttons on it. When the picture control is mapped to the class derived from CWnd using DDX_Control, all the message boxes (including default system message box pop up when you enter invalid input in the edit box) are hidden behind main dialog until you use "alt + tab" to bring them to front. If I map the picture control to the default CStatic class, the above problem disappeared. Do anyone has some hints to solve this problem? Thank you in advance for any help.

• Are Java GUIs always slow to update or is it just me?

  I've just started making my first GUI application in Java and I decided to use the NetBeans IDE to do it. I think its working fine so far, except for one problem; it seems to be slow updating the content of a window. Even in very simple windows with few controls I find that when - for example - closing or resizing a window, I get the normal window border working properly but the inside is completely see through for a second. It's not the biggest deal in the world, I just find it mildly annoying.

  Is VCL dead, or does it have a future as a GUI library? As CLX ended, is there any chance for cross-platform support in future releases? I've had to do some work with legacy app that uses Borland's VCL(BCB6). Now that new features have to be implemented, it's necessary to revalue alternatives. Whether to stick with VCL or migrate to some other library/framework. I've never read much what's happening in the field Embarcadero(Borland) tools. At least there seems to be only few VCL tagged questions here in SO and no much luck with google either.

• What's the next steps for moving from appengine to full django?

  Hey guys, I'm super new to programming and I've been using appengine to help me learn python and general coding. I'm getting better quickly and I'm loving it all the way :) Appengine was awesome for allowing me to just dive into writing my app and getting something live that works (see http://www.7bks.com/). But I'm realising that the longer I continue to learn on appengine the more I'm constraining myself and locking myself into a single system. I'd like to move to developing on full django (since django looks super cool!). What are my next steps? To give you a feel for my level of knowledge: I'm not a unix user I'm not familiar with command line controls (I still use appengine/python completely via the appengine SDK) I've never programmed in anything other than python, anywhere other than appengine I know the word SQL, but don't know what MySQL is really or how to use it. So, specifically: What are the skills I need to learn to get up and running with full django/python? If I'm going to host somewhere else I suppose I'll need to learn some sysadmin type skills (maybe even unix?). Is there anywhere that offers easy hosting (like appengine) but that supports django? I hear such great things about heroku I'm considering switching to RoR and going there I appreciate that I'm likely not quite ready to move away from appengine just yet but I'm a fiercely passionate learner (http://www.7bks.com/blog/179001) and would love it if I knew all the steps I needed to learn so I could set about learning them. At the moment, I don't even know what the steps are I need to learn! Thank you very much. Sorry this isn't a specific programming question but I've looked around and haven't found a good how-to for someone of my level of experience and I think others would appreciate a good roadmap for the things we need to learn to get up and running. • Escape whitespace in paths using nautilus script

  I didn't think this would be as tricky as it turned out to be, but here I am. I'm trying to write a Nautilus script in Python to upload one or more images to Imgur just by selecting and right clicking them. It works well enough with both single images and multiple images - as long as they don't contain any whitespace. In fact, you can upload a single image containing whitespace, just not multiple ones. The problem is that NAUTILUS_SCRIPT_SELECTED_FILE_PATHS returns all the selected files and directories as a space separated string. So for example, it could look like this: print os.environment['NAUTILUS_SCRIPT_SELECTED_FILE_PATHS'] /home/nevon/Desktop/test image.png /home/nevon/Desktop/test.jpg What I need is a way to -either in bash or Python- escape the spaces in the path - but not the spaces that delimit different items. Either that, or a way to put quotation marks around each item. The ultimate solution would be if I could do that in bash and then send the items as separate arguments to my python script. Something like: python uploader.py /home/nevon/Desktop/test\ image.png /home/nevon/Desktop/test.jpg I've tried RTFM'ing, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of good solutions for this. At least not that I've found. Any ideas?

• Is it me or is developing web based data entry GUIs a big pain?

  Maybe it's me or maybe it isn't. I don't have a huge amount of experience of developing web based data entry software but do have some. I used to do it quite a bit years ago. Used to use Oracle Forms, Visual Studio, various 4th generation languages, and performing the user interface layout used to be a snap. Now doing the user interface for developing web applications seems to be a huge pain in the rear. Just trying to get text entry fields and widgets to go where they are supposed to go on the screen is a total pain. You have to know Javascript, CSS, JQuery, HTML, etc. There must be an easier way to develop data entry forms that produce the needed underlying code for a web page. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. There must be some WYSIWYG GUI development tools for the web for developing data entry forms out there. Anybody know of any?

• Creating Ruby applications for Windows.

  I want to develop a Windows application. Honestly I care little about cross-platforms for now (but still would be good) I want to use Ruby, since it has quite a simple syntax and is so.. well, simple and easy to learn. My application is like a "game level creator", where you can design your own level and then run it with another application which is a "game level player" by reading the project file created by the creator app. You get the idea. Now, I got a new PC and is completely clean. Absolutely no trace of my old Ruby experiments and fails. First of all, I will need to choose a GUI platform for my Ruby application! Can you recommend me one? I have heard of Shoes and Tk, but want to know what you think.

• Return popupmenu selection in MATLAB using one line of code

  I have a GUI which uses a selection from a popupmenu in another callback. Is there a way to return the selected value of the popupmenu in only one line without creating any temporary variables? I've tried several solutions, but I've only managed two lines with one temporary variable: Three lines: list=get(handles.popupmenu1,'String'); val=get(handles.popupmenu1,'Value'); str=list{val}; Two lines: temp=get(handles.popupmenu1,{'String','Value'}); str=temp{1}{temp{2}}; Can anyone shave it down to one? PS, It's a dynamic menu, so I can't just use get(handles.popupmenu1,'Value') and ignore the string component altogether.)

• NetBeans create and instantiate programatically custom swing widgets

  Hey! I have a problem I know how I would solve easily developing under eclipse - but not so easily developing under net beans. I want to create a custom swing widget - which I can instantiate by code as many as I need and attach them to my main panel. I have developed the rest of the GUI using the GUIBuilder. The problem is - im not entirely sure how to do this. • Examples of fast .NET WPF/WinForms apps?

  I am currently investigating whether to build a windows application using unmanaged C/C++ or in .NET and would like to know of the kind of performance and responsiveness that is capable with a managed C#/.NET GUI app? Not surprisingly it looks like the fastest most responsive applications (e.g. chrome, spotify, etc) are written in unmanaged C/C++. I've had a hard time finding examples of really good .NET applications and so I would like some help. What's the best example of a fast and responsive .NET windows application?

• SSH X11 Tunneling

  Hey all, I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and trying to run a Java program I wrote whose source code is located on a remote machine. I'm using ssh to connect using the following command from the terminal: ssh -X username@hostname When running the program, one of the GUI frames has its buttons missing from view, but they are clickable and work as expected when I can guess accurately where they are. Running the code from my local machine they are present, and running from another windows machine using X-Windows they are present. Been trying to solve this problem for a few hours now but to no avail. Anyone have any helpful insight how to resolve this issue? Thanks!

I am using a third party library for the charts, the database and data extraction layer have already been coded.
