• SPUtility.SendMail and the 2048 Character Limit

  We were in the middle of testing a web part responsible for gathering information from visitors to our Client's website and emailing it to someone responsible for responding to the request.  During testing, however, it was brought to our attention that the message was cutting off at 2048 characters.  Now, 2048 is one of those numbers that is usually indicative of some computational limit, but I was hopeful that Microsoft had thought through the possibility of emailing more than 2048 characters from SharePoint.  Luckily I was right. and wrong. As it turns out, SPUtility.SendMail is not limited to any specific character limit as far as I can tell.  However, each LINE of text that you send via SendMail cannot exceed 2048 characters.  Since we were sending an HTML email it was constructed entirely without line breaks, far exceeding the 2048 character limit and ultimately helping to educate me about this obscure technical limitation whose only benefit thus far is offering me something to rant about on my blog.  The fix is simple, just put in a carriage return and a line break often enough to avoid going past the 2048 character limit.  I'm sure someone can present a great technical reason for the 2048 character limit, but it seems fairly arbitrary since the "\r\n" that got appended to the string are ultimately just characters too.

• C++ Numerical Recipes &ndash; A New Adventure!

  I am about to embark on a great journey – over the next 6 weeks I plan to read through C++ Numerical Recipes 3rd edition http://amzn.to/YtdpkS I'll be reading this with an eye to C++ AMP, thinking about implementing the suitable subset (non-recursive, additive, commutative) to run on the GPU. APIs supporting HPC, GPGPU or MapReduce are all useful – providing you have the ability to choose the correct algorithm to leverage on them. I really think this is the most fascinating area of programming – a lot more exciting than LOB CRUD !!! When you think about it , everything is a function – we categorize & we extrapolate. As abstractions get higher & less leaky, sooner or later information systems programming will become a non-programmer task – you will be using WYSIWYG designers to build: GUIs MVVM service mapping & virtualization workflows ORM Entity relations In the data source SharePoint / LightSwitch are not there yet, but every iteration gets closer. For information workers, managed code is a race to the bottom. As MS futures are a bit shaky right now, the provider agnostic nature & higher barriers of entry of both C++ & Numerical Analysis seem like a rational choice to me. Its also fascinating – stepping outside the box. This is not the first time I've delved into numerical analysis. 6 months ago I read Numerical methods with Applications, which can be found for free online: http://nm.mathforcollege.com/ 2 years ago I learned the .NET Extreme Optimization library www.extremeoptimization.com – not bad 2.5 years ago I read Schaums Numerical Analysis book http://amzn.to/V5yuLI - not an easy read, as topics jump back & forth across chapters: 3 years ago I read Practical Numerical Methods with C# http://amzn.to/V5yCL9 (which is a toy learning language for this kind of stuff) I also read through AI a Modern Approach 3rd edition END to END http://amzn.to/V5yQSp - this took me a few years but was the most rewarding experience. • using Moniker.com's nameservers

  I have a VPS with A2Hosting for which i need to upgrade the OS. However, they've changed their VPS packages and forced me to order a new one. I went with an "unmanaged" package and have only just realised that they do not provide any DNS service at all, not even nameservers. Support tells me that "since your domain is not hosted with us, but with Moniker, you would not be able to use these nameservers. Your domain registrar should have a set of default nameservers that you can use, then create a A record to point to" my IP address. Moniker does provide for using their nameservers but i'm confused about which "pre-defined zone configuration" to use. They are: Domain Parking Domain Parking with Email Forwarding URL and Email Forwarding URL Forwarding URL Forwarding & CoolHandle Email I just want to use their nameserver and then create A & MX records pointing to the VPS. What do they mean by forwarding? I get the feeling it's a service that i don't want. Or, is it that i need to have a pre-defined zone only temporarily, and THEN set the A & MX? Which of these should i choose.

Wold. He also states that the primary objective of disaster recovery planning is to protect the organization in the event that all or parts of its operations and/or computer services are rendered unusable. Furthermore, companies can mandate through policies that IT must maintain redundant hardware in case of any hardware failures and redundant network connectivity incase the primary internet service provider goes down.  Additionally, they can require that all staff be trained in regards to the Disaster recovery policy to ensure that all parties evolved are knowledgeable to execute the recovery plan. Business Continuity Procedures Business continuity procedure vary from organization to origination, however there are standard procedures that most originations should follow. • MSDN Live 2010 &ndash; Delivered : 24 sessions (4 x 6) on Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server

  We (Mikael Nitell and me) got a whole track on the Norwegian MSDN Live tour this year.  We did these as a pair, and covered 4 cities over 4 days, 6 sessions per day, taking 8 hours to come through it.  The Islandic volcano made the travels a bit rough, but we managed 6 flights out of 8. The first one had to go by van instead, 7-8 hour drive each way together with other MSDN Live presenters – a memorable tour! Oslo was the absolute top point.  We had to change hall to a bigger one. People were crowding, and even the big hall was packed!  The presentations were mostly based on demos, but we had a few slides as well.  They have been uploaded to my SkyDrive.  Info to aliens – some of the text may be Norwegian. The sessions were as follows: Overview of news in Visual Studio and Team Foundation server 2010 Ensuring Quality with VS/TFS 2010 Releasing products with VS/TFS 2010 No More No Repro with VS/TFS 2010 Performance Testing and Parallel Programming with VS/TFS 2010 Migrating to VS/TFS 2010 Tips, tricks, news and some best practices with VS/TFS 2010   In the coming days, I will post up examples from the demos too, with explanations of how they are intended to work. These entries will also contain stuff we had to remove from the actual presentations due to the time constraints. We managed to create recordings of two of the sessions, which will be uploaded to Channel 9 by Microsoft, afaik.   I will update this blog with information about exact locations when that is done. • apt-get failed install of libg15, all package management is failing

  I was trying to get my Logitech G510 keyboard's back-lights working so I went into the Synaptic Package Manager and marked LibG15, G15daemon, and all the other associated packages. Synaptic reported a failed install. Now all Package management is failing due to libg15 being "halfway installed." Some commands I have tried to fix the problem follow. . . root@bt:~# apt-get upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: The package libg15 needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it. root@bt:~# sudo apt-get autoremove Reading package lists... • Accessing hardware via USB by proprietary windows software using Wine

  I have this proprietary software that access some hardware using USB. Over a year ago I tried to install it on a Ubuntu OS using Wine (the program is written for Windows). The UI seemed to work just fine but it had no access to the USB port. Back then I had to license a Windows copy in order to get the job done. Now, that Windows version we where using is deprecated and it is not longer available and available versions cost trice as much. So it is time to give Linux another try. How can I ensure that the USB is available for a Wine application? Neither the application nor the hardware install any driver, the app just pool all available USB drivers and make a handshake if it recognizes that the hardware is present. I want to minimize the test cases before abandoning Linux one more time. Update I've just tried again (with the hope an upgrade was made from last year), and it is not working. The proprietary windows app is not finding the hardware.

  We are currently in the process of upgrading one of our applications to .Net 4.0. Aside from us geeks wanting to always use latest and greatest technologies, an immediate business need for Silverlight 4.0 features justified our upgrade endeavor. The following is a summary of some issues we ran into with our web project:   For security purposes, the IIS 7 .Net 4.0 ISAPI filter is disabled. “Allow” it from the ISAPI and CGI Restrictions screen as shown:   Figure 1 - Allowing ASP.Net 4.0 ISAPI Filter   By default the Web Setup Project only requires the .Net Framework 4 Client Profile to be installed on target system, which offers a lighter weight install for client machines consuming .Net 4.0 applications. However, using certain .Net 4.0 features requires the full .Net 4.0 Framework as outlined in this link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc656912.aspx. We hence needed to update the installer to require the complete .Net 4.0 Framework on the target machine and to prompt for its installation if needed.   To accomplish this goal, we updated the installer’s launch conditions to check for .Net 4.0 as well as the installer prerequisites as shown:     Figure 2- Ensure Web Setup Project runs on full .Net 4.0 version Figure 3 - Launch Conditions screen Figure 4 - Set launch condition to .Net 4.0. So, there is always the chance of thinking not being renewed as an April fools joke.  Well, I get to postpone that joke one more time. It looks like, I’ve been renewed again. WAHOOO!! :) Thank you Microsoft, and thank you to everyone one of you for your support and best wishes, and most of all, thanks to our MVP lead, Melissa – many don’t realize it, but it’s a tough job she has to do. Think about it, all the people who are MVPs, those who no longer will be, and those who want to be. 11 years ago when I got my first award, my love for technology was insane. Today, it is worse.I will remain a technologist until I die, even after I retire and grow crinkly. I would want my dentures fitted with Microprocessors.Technology is what I passionately love doing.   If I login on my Ubuntu 14.04, I get the following desktop: This weird behavior appeared after I executed sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and restarted my computer. Don't know why though. • 1.5 TB USB Drive failed to mount

  Seagate 1.5Tb FreeAgent USB Hard Drive. Formatted FAT32. I figure it is 75% full. Used to work fine in XUBUNTU it shows up in Cairo Dock but when I click on it I get "failed to mount drive'. Nautilus does not display the icon nor does Thunar. Windows Vista will no longer recognise drive either. Back Track 5R3 also no longer fails to mount it. BUT and here is the BIG BUT my Pioneer DV-410 reads the files and plays the everything just fine. I believe this all happened after an unclean shutdown / XUbuntu 12.10 system freeze. Why can't XUBUNTU mount this drive when a crappy 13 year old DVD player can mount it. I am desperate to back up the data before just in case the drive becomes completely unreadable. Using XUBUNTU 12.10 Quantal current 3.5.0.17 Kernel (past 3 Kernels wont read it either) and all newest apt-get update / dist-upgrade are applied. I will post any other info you folks request as needed. • How to Configure Microsoft Word 2013 to Connect to Geekswithblogs

  The first step in this process is to open Word 2013. Once there, you will have the different templates available. You will select Blog Post.  Once the template for Blog Post opens, you will have a dialog popup with the option to Register a Blog Account. And click on Register Now.  The next part of the dialog will prompt you to provide the New Blog Account details, starting with the type of Blog you have (SharePoint, WordPress, TypePad and others are listed). In our case for GeeksWithBlogs, we will select Other.  Now come the juicy details! Under the New Account dialog, you will have the API set to MetaWebLog.Then provide the Blog Post URL, this needs to be http://geekswithblogs.net/<your-account>/services/metablogapi.aspx (remember to change the <your-account> part with your info).Then, enter your User Name and Password, click OK and you should be set (you will receive a dialog letting you know information will be transferred).  Hope it works for you!

  Well, first of all, change is inevitable and mostly good. Furthermore attempts at simplifying the User Interface such as Gnome 3, Unity to make Linux more inclusive hold much promise, even though they adversely affect my style of working. Additionally, though now retired, I have worked with computers for 47 years, and though I do nothing serious for others now, I still do heavy duty things. 10.04 LTS is my big workstation, and I had three 10.10 systems for Mythtv, and one of which is further adapted for video & related. The Mythtv were 10.10 because of a dormant bug regarding installing to 10.04. My work habits consistently use dual monitors and compiz cube and 3D windows with the computing horsepower to support them. The dual monitors with separate X screens has been not been functional since 11.04, and cube/3D windows not functional in Unity, and with diminished functionality Gnome. There is a bug filed (after upgrade to 12.04 amd64 Gnome Classic not properly draw second screen) I have mitigated the situation some by switching to Xubuntu and eschewing Unity. The question that comes to mind is why this bug is not given more attention in that it nearly cuts functionality in half for more competent workstations. Sample workspace... Please know that I appreciate all the hard work, dedication require to pull off something as big as Ubuntu et al.

  For a prospective client we have to offer a solution to provide following system: CMS Order Management Shopping Cart CRM Helpdesk Accounting & Finance Custom Functions In order to save time and to avoid reinvent the wheel our idea is to integrate different off-the-shelf solutions. Their first requirement is that the system has to be hosted in their country which I think will exclude application like Aplicor, Netsuite & Salesforce. Basically the nucleaus would be the CMS which would integrate all the other apps. PHP or .Net based solutions would be our preferences as have inhouse expertise. So far following are few combinations I have come up with: Joomla (CMS) + Virtuemart (Cart+Ordering) + Sugar CRM + Open ERP (finance) + OTRS Magento (CMS+Cart+Ordering) + Sugar CRM + Open ERP (finance) + Helpdesk Ultimate Drupal (CMS) + Ubercart (Cart+Ordering) + Sugar CRM + Open ERP (finance) + Support Ticketing System Sharepoint (CMS) + OptimusBt (Cart+Ordering) + Dynamics CRM + Great Plains + SharepointHQ Dotnetnuke (CMS) + DNNSpot (Cart+Ordering) + Sigma Pro (CRM+Helpdesk) + Open ERP For Helpdesk I liked Zendesk but the server location was the stopping factor, similar for finance and CRM I liked Aplicor.   Today is a very exciting day: After the official release of Windows 8 (and Microsoft Surface!) on Friday, and the official release of Windows Phone 8 on Monday, the Build conference is starting! This is the conference in which we will learn all about the developer experience for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. As a partner of Microsoft, I had the privilege of trying out some of the new things early, and this gave me the opportunity to port MVVM Light to Windows Phone 8 (it was already running for Windows 8), and today I am officially publishing this new version. Before you go and update, please not the following: V4.1 (4.1.24.0) only supports Visual Studio 2012 (and Express). If for some reason you are still using Visual Studio 2010, don’t despair! • print jobs are held until the VirtualBox guest OS is reboot

  Here is the setup: VirtualBox 4.1.20 (which the Help window describes as 4.1.12_Ubuntu) Extension Pack 4.1.20 (for USB support) Windows 7 Home Premium as a guest operating system on VirtualBox Ubuntu 12.04 with dist-upgrade's to September 2012 as the host operating system. Fuji Xerox DocuPrint P205b, which I believe is a GDI printer, connected via USB. The problem is that often print jobs will sit in the print queue and nothing comes out of the printer. The printer status for the first item in the queue will be Printing even though nothing happens. Then upon rebooting Windows, the print jobs get printed, seemingly simultaneous to the rebooting process; that is as Windows reloads. One way to avoid this problem is to reboot Windows with the printer cable attached, and then submit the print jobs. The print jobs get printed in a timely manner. Perhaps VirtualBox has a problem with USB being plug-n-play and hot pluggable. It's not convenient to have the printer plugged in when Windows boots because: One, this is a laptop, and Two, I may be boot Windows for a purpose other than printing and not anticipate needing to print. Are there any recommendable fixes for this problem?

In the oil and gas industry some clients are years behind and you may have 50% or more of clients remain on IE8 or older for the foreseeable future.- The difference between browser engines has become almost negligible, as it should be. • Ubuntu 12.04 stopped recognizing my BenQ monitor and reduced resolution to 1024x768

  A few days ago I installed Ubuntu 12.04 32bit Desktop. It recognized my hardware without a problem (at least that I know of) and all worked fine. I left my system running (it is at work) through the night because it is also working as a database server and when I came today to work the resolution was 1024x768 (the monitor recommends 1920x1080) even though in the Display section of the System Settings it was recognized as BenQ, and no higher resolution was offered. After a restart, the monitor name changed from BenQ to Unknown. This is a desktop computer. I also installed gtk-redshift and f.lux. I checked Additional Drivers to see if there is something I can install but it didn't find anything. I tried to Google it but I didn't find anything about a monitor stopping being recognized after it was already working. I did enable some PPAs yesterday, namely webupd8, mozillateam/thunderbird-stable and some other, and I also followed the instructions to patch the NotifyOSD to be more friendly: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:caffeine-developers/ppa sudo add-apt-repository ppa:leolik/leolik sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install libnotify-bin pkill notify-osd sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install notifyosdconfig I now purged both caffeine-developers and leolik PPAs in the hope it will help, but no change. Has there been a change in the packages that could introduce this problem? Any help will be very appreciated :-) Omri
