• nginx giving of 404 when using set in an if-block

  I've just started using nginx and I'm now trying to make it play nice with the Wordpress plugin WP-SuperCache which adds static files of my blog posts. To serve the static file I need to make sure that some cookies aren't set, that it's not a POST-request and making sure the cached/static file exist. I found this guide and it seems like a good fit. But I've noticed that as soon as I try to set something inside an if my site starta giving 404s on an URL that isn't rewritten. Namely: 2010/05/12 19:53:39 [error] 15977#0: *84 "/home/ba/www/domain.tld/blog/2010/05/blogpost/index.php" is not found (2: No such file or directory), client: <ip>, server: domain.tld, request: "GET /blog/2010/05/blogpost/ HTTP/1.1", host: "domain.tld", referrer: "http://domain.tld/blog/" Remove the if and everything works as it should. • Can a cur file have an alpha map (for high quality transparency)?

  I want to convert this Heroes of Newerth cursor into a cur file so I can use it as a cursor on windows and on my website. The cursor is now in a PNG file with an alpha map, and I have so far been unsuccessful in converting it to a cur file. The things I've tried is using the Photoshop cursor plugin to simply save the png as a cur. The result was a working cur file with a white background instead of a transparent one. I've also tried painting the background pure green (0, 255, 0) and saving as a cur file, in which case the background was still green when I tried using it as a windows cursor. I've also tried what's been mentioned in a few tutorials, which is selecting the area I want transparent and saving the selection in Photoshop (it then ends up as a new channel). So I selected the cursor and inverted the selection and saved it. The result was a bit odd. Instead of a transparent background, I now get a background that inverts the colours behind it, just like the "Windows inverted" mouse scheme. So is there any way to accomplish what I'm trying to do?

• TortoiseSVN client slows Explorer to a crawl in Windows XP running in Parallels

  I thought I'd make my first SuperUser question relatively simple, though it's the kind of question that may not get many responses as I'm not directly involved with the issue. A colleague does his development in Windows XP running in Parallels on his Mac. We've just migrated our VSS repository to SVN, and we've gone with TortoiseSVN as our client of choice with the Ankhsvn plugin for Visual Studio. On his XP instance, after installing TortoiseSVN, browsing through folders using Explorer is extremely slow; about 15 - 30 seconds before the contents of the next folder displays. It's the slowest when opening My Computer. Once he reaches a folder that contains the working content of an SVN project, Explorer behaves quickly again as expected. It seems that TortoiseSVN may be spending a bunch of time searching subfolders for stuff so it can do its icon-overlay thing, but that's just a guess. I've used TortoiseSVN for years on both XP and Vista on far less powerful machines without any issues with Explorer, so I'm attributing the slowness to it being run in a VM, though that may not be the actual issue. So has anyone encountered similar performance issues, and/or know of a fix? Keep in mind that any requests to make changes to his configuration will need to be communicated and thus my response time might be slow. Thanks everyone!

• REMOTE_USER not getting set?

  I am trying to setup LDAP Authentication in Joomla using a plugin called JMapMyLDAP (in fact 4 plugins each doing a different job). I need to pull a part of a string out of the server variable REMOTE_USER and this should be visible (we see here http://timplummer.com.au/4-how-to-integrate-joomla-3-with-active-directory-using-ldap.html) in phpinfo(); The issue is that REMOTE_USER is not set or at least not appearing. A few things to note (if you don't mind) here- conceptually I am not really understanding authentication as a whole subject it appears to be vast despite my years working in websites. Yes I used asp and built php pages to check a user is who they say they are with a token(/session?) that was given to just them and then they are identified when a stateless request is made to the server. Thats my level of understanding. This sounds different to the basic authentication in apache where a password sits in a file and a username and the user needs to login to a basic form to get access to the folder/docs this is via an .htaccess file. Ok so with the LDAP to work I need to get REMOTE_USER this sounds very reasonable as how else do we know is making the request. Thank you.

• How to "drag and drop" folders or multiple HTML files into a browser and have them open in multiple tabs

  I save pages that I browse on the net and find interesting into a folder called C:\PageSaves Later, during the commute, I open these pages to see what they are and move them into a neatly categorized folder tree. For example, Perl related pages goto C:\Pages\Perl, MySQL related pages goto C:\Pages\MySQL and so on. I was wondering if there is any way I could open any number of HTML files on disc / inside a folder (C:\PageSaves in my case) into Mozilla/FF/K-Meleon etc For example, I would like to just "drag and drop" the folder C:\PageSaves into FireFox and have it open all the .html pages in the folder in a separate tab Right now, if I "drag and drop" multiple HTML files, it just opens the last file in the selection. Have a set of toolbar buttons, basically, a (the) plugin that should allow me to nuke the page (if I don't want to keep the page anymore) from disc or move the file (and its corresponding folder) into a predefined / new folder I am familiar with coding full blown FireFox plugins, so even if something very basic/almost similar exists, I can take it forward. Hints/clues/other methods of achieving the same result are all welcome!

• Mirror your display to another computer on your network

  I have a computer I am using for showing media, running windows 7 (XBMC). It is hooked up with a projector. I want other computers on my network to have the opportunity to mirror their display to this computer.(without the media computer having to accept it, it should be all controlled by the sending computer.(like sending a movie with Apple's Airplay)) One scenario: I am finding a webpage with a great article (or a Word document) on my computer that i want to show to the other people in the room, i press a button, then my screen is mirrored to the media pc. I can still scroll, write etc. so everybody can see it. When i am done showing the article, I can exit the display mirroring, and the media computer display goes back to normal. This should mirror the whole screen, not only the browser like plugins can do in chrome, or sending Youtube movies like plugins for Opera. Update I found a video example of the solution I am looking for, unfortunately it looks like it will be hard making a Chromecast reciever for windows. Using the "Cast entire screen (experimentally)" button on the Chromecast plugin in Chrome is doing the exact thing I want to do, see this video.

• Dovecot starting and running, but not listening on any port

  Among others things I'm in charge of a Debian GNU/Linux (Wheezy) DomU for the mail services of the company i work for. Yesterday one HDD that was used for this particular server has died. After installing Debian again, Dovecot decided to no longer listen on any ports (checked with netstat -l). • Website hosted on my virtualbox web server not displaying images or applying css when viewed through phone

  I would really appreciate it if someone could help me. Please let me know if you need more info in the comments. My Set Up I have a windows 7 pc. On it I run a virtual box VM with a ubuntu 12 guest os and LAMP setup. I share files between the two machines using samba from linux to windows and using windows file sharing (Workgroup) the other way round. The vm is set up with a bridged network adapter and can happily serve web pages to my host machine. I use DHCP reservations on my home wireless router/modem to reserve an ip for the vm and give it a sitename.dev in my windows host file so I can access it at sitename.dev through the browser. The Problem So far so good but I have a dev project which needs a lot of mobile template development, now obviously I can use a browser plugin to simulate a mobile device but I would like to be able to see the real thing easily on my phone during development. So ideally I would like a similar setup on my iphone to my windows setup Now I'm not great on networking and dont have much experience with web server set up. So when I typed the ip of my virtual box into my iphone i wasnt expecting to see anything. I was pleasantly surprised when my site loaded up. The javascript even seems to be running but the images and css are not happening. My Question 1) What is happening here, is it something to do with the bridged set up on the vm network? 2)How do I make the sites load properly through my phone Notes I've also tried another phone. The same sites viewed on live servers work fine.

• As an admin, what tools do you use to log what you do to your boxes?

  I am more of a linux applications developer than an admin. Over time, I've built servers and maintained them, sometimes to offer services, mostly just to develop the applications I work on. Way back when I would create a file in my account to keep notes on what I did on each machine, so that I could replicate that when I migrated to other machines. Nowadays, I install something a private trac installation, install it's blog plugin, and then use that to make notes of everything I install, and most commands that I run, as well as the output. This provides me a combination wiki and blog that I find very useful as a "captain's log". I do this mostly so that when I migrate to a new clean machine, I have a much easier time in bringing it up. And yet, I am always amazed when I see others just install this, delete that, run this, setup this config, ... without seeming to use any way to actually note what they are doing. What do YOU do, and what tools are available? I am especially interested in the transition between maintaining a few machines for a few people and maintaining several to dozens of machines providing a real service. What are the best practices, and where can I find good resources? Thanks!

  Any tool, plugin, extension, script/ code to push "selected" data, text, information blobs from Web pages, Emails etc, then parsed and imported to structured Event, Appointment (e.g. .ics) on a standard Calendar like Outlook, Google, iCal? If not, what and how could I use some scripting, coding or existing tools, extensions to add on top and do this. I come across a lot of unstructured information on Webpages, Emails, FB events etc. where I just want to add that information to my Calendar. Instead of entering all the information by hand all the time, there should be an easy enough way to have the information get parsed, organized and imported to a Calendar... Either directly to a calendar from source or Translated to a standard format such as .ICS that can be imported & saved easily. Would love to see some suggestions for this incorporating one or more of the following: on Windows with Chrome & Outlook on iPhone/ iPad to its Calendar PS: I'll come back and see if I can add more information to this question and to answer it as well. I have not found a solution yet.

• nVidia performance with newer X and newer driver abysmal with Compiz

  I recently upgraded Debian to Xorg 2.9.4 and installed nvidia-glx from experimental, version 260.19.21. This was somewhat of an uphill battle as the dependencies for the experimental nvidia-glx package are still somewhat broken. I got it to work without forcing the installation of any packages and without modifying the packages. However, after the upgrade compiz performance has been abysmal. I am using the desktop wall plugin and switching viewports is really slow - takes a few seconds for each switch. In addition to this, every effect that compiz does, such as zoom animations for icons when launching applications, takes seconds. The viewport switching speed changes relative to the amount of windows on that virtual screen - empty screens switch almost at normal speed, single browser windows work almost decently, but just 4 rxvt terminals slows the switches down to a crawl. My compiz configuration should be pretty basic. Xorg is likewise configured without anything special - the only "custom" configuration is forcing the driver name to be "nvidia". I've fiddled around with the nvidia-settings and compizconfig trying different VSync settings, but none of those helped. My graphics card is: NVIDIA GPU NVS 3100M (GT218) at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0). This is laptop GPU that is from the Geforce GTX 200 series. Graphics card performance should naturally be no problem. EDIT: In the end, nothing really worked, and I got really annoyed with the state of compiz and its support in Debian. Many nVidia driver revisions have passed and I am using Gnome 3 now, so I am accepting the best answers to this question even though the issue was not resolved.

• What is best configuration settings for Wordpress and MySQL on Win2008 + IIS7 stack?

  I currently have four blogs that uses Wordpress running on a shared hosting company. This blogs have a considerable amount of visits and I'm constantly receiving warnings from the hosting company saying that I'm consuming too much server CPU. Considering the fact that I have a dedicated server in another company with plenty of idle resources (it has a quad core Xeon 2.5GHz and 8GB of Ram and run on Win2008) I'm planning to move the blogs to this server in order to have some more freedom. I'm currently using this server to host some web applications using ASP.Net and SQL Express. I've installed a blog to test and it worked fine, but some issues appeared and raised some questions in my mind: How to properly set the permissions in the folders used by wordpress plugins, I mean, what permissions should I set for the IIS_User in some folders so that the plugins works correctly? What's the best caching plugin to use considering this is a Window Server? In the previous hosting company I used the WPSuperCache, but it was a Linux Stack. Or should I ignore the caching plugins and use the Dynamic Caching Feature of IIS7? How can I optmize the MySQL server running in this server (specially the settings regarding memory and caching) How can I protect the admin folders against hacker attacks? I know some people will advice me not to run Wordpress in a Windows stack, but that's my only choice. I don't even know were to start managing and LAMP stack, don't have the time to do so nor the money to rent another server.

• Noisily rendered text in Firefox

  It came to me in a week or so that certain pages (Facebook, StrackOverflow, some news sites) have text rendering errors in Firefox. As a workaround if I refresh the page, or simply select and deselect the buggy text, the unpleasant effect disappears. I don't have this effect in Internet Explorer or in any of my desktop applications. Windows 7 Pro 64bit (fresh) Firefox 19.0.2 (fresh) Ati Radeon HD 4600 Series (fresh drivers) Thanks for the help in advance! Update 1/2 I have only three addons: Forecastfox, Hungarian spell checking dictionary and Quick locale switcher. The latter two are installed after the effect appeared. I disabled the first individually and did not helped. But if I start my firefox with disabled addons I cannot reproduce the error. As far as I know this mode does not mean disabled plugins, which I do have (Adobe Acrobat, Citrix ICA Client, Google Earth plugin, Google update, Java Deployment Toolkit 6, MS Office 2010, MS Windows Media Player Firefox, Shockwave Flash, Silverlight, VLC Web). Update 2/2 If I disable all plugins and extensions I still have the problem. If I start Firefox with disabled addons then I cannot reproduce the problem.

• Huh? JDK not found? (on Windows 7 64-bit)

  I am setting up a development environment for the latest Android 2.3 on a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit. I first installed the 64-bit JDK 6 (jdk-6u23-windows-x64.exe). Then, I installed 64-bit Eclipse Classic 3.6 (eclipse-SDK-3.6.1-win32-x86_64.zip). Then, I proceed to install the Android SDK Starter Package: installer_r08-windows.exe. But... upon start it says: "Java SE Development Kit (JDK) not found." Why? I just installed it. Is this a mismatch between 32-bit and 64-bit? How do I solve this? Update (1): I tried setting the %JAVA_HOME% environment variable, as well as setting the Installed JREs in Eclipse, as suggested below. None of these solved the problem. It appears that I am not the only experiencing the problem, as this thread suggests: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1919340/android-sdk-setup-under-windows-7-pro-64-bit I wonder whether there is a 64-bit version of the Android SDK. Update (2): I used the zip version instead (android-sdk_r08-windows.zip), ran android.bat, updated all SDK packages, and installed the ADT plugin (8.0.1), not before having to check: 'Contact all update sites during install to find required software'. We'll see how this goes... Update (3): It worked! (going to accept @bubu's answer shortly) -- but why doesn't the emulator include the HelloAndroid app when I run it (Ctrl+F11) from Eclipse?

• Change the background color of selected text in Google Docs to increase readability [migrated]

  How can I override or change the background color of text selected in Google Docs? It is difficult for me to see the difference and I would like to increase the contrast or difference. After Google restyled Google Docs last year (or earlier this year), I've been unable to see selected text. It's possible this is a visual deficiency with my eyes. In Google Docs, under both Google Chrome (17.0.963.83 (Official Build 127885) m) and Firefox (11.0), when I select text inside a Google Doc, the selected text has a background of color #d6e0f5. Compare this to the default browser background color of #2f65c0. (I determined the color of the selected text background by taking a screenshot and using the color picker tool in Photoshop). I've tested this using a brand new Firefox profile as well as google chrome profile. Here's a section of a screenshot showing the selected text : I've tried using a userscript to override the CSS to go back to the default text selection color using the "Stylish" plugin with this css : ::selection { background:#2f65c0; color:#ffffff; } ::-moz-selection { background:#2f65c0; color:#ffffff; } ::-webkit-selection { background:#2f65c0; color:#ffffff; } This code works on other sites, but I'm unable to get it to work on Google Docs. (I tested on other sites but applying the userscript to a different domain and using bright yellow instead of the default dark blue #2f65c0.) When you use Google Docs, do you have the same color background for selected text or something different? (To test this, browse to docs.google.com , create a document, type text into the document, select the text with the mouse by dragging over it, take a screenshot, load the screenshot up in an image editor and determine the background color of the selected text.) This color differential (between light blue #d6e0f5 and white #fffff) may be easy to see for others and the problem lies with my eyes.

• Java in a browser on Ubuntu

  So I am running an old version of Ubuntu and all of a sudden, my capabilities to run Java in a browser have stopped and it no longer executes properly. Someone else set this up for me, but I believe it's running icedtea plugin 6 and jre 6. What would be the best ways to troubleshoot this? I suppose I could try downloading icedtea 7 and jre 7 (sun or openjdK) and see if that works? Also, in general, is installing icedtea, installing a java runtime environment, and then symlinking something to the plugins directory of your browser the best way to get Java working on most Linux systems? Unfortunately, there are many guides all over the internet offering totally different solutions, but this is probably the most common I've seen (not sure how well it works). My main use is downloading an executing .jnlp files (browsers should open it automatically). Although, I've seen people using "javasw" to run the file outside of a browser. Is this something I could consider doing? I can't seem to find javasw packaged for my version of Ubuntu.

• How can I get (g)Vim to display the character count of the current file?

  I like to write tutorials and articles for a programming forum I frequent. This forum has a character limit per post. I've used Notepad++ in the past to write posts and it keeps a live character count in the status bar. I'm starting to use gVim more and I really don't want to go back to Notepad++ at this point, but it is very useful to have this character count. If I go over the count, I usually end up pasting the post into Notepad++ so I can see when I've trimmed enough to get by the limit. I've seen suggestions that :set ruler would help, but this only gives the character count via the current column index on the current line. This would be great if I didn't use paragraph breaks, but I'm sure you'd agree that reading several thousand characters in one paragraph is not comfortable. I read the help and thought that rulerformat would work, but after looking over the statusline format it uses I didn't see anything that gives a character count for the current buffer. I've seen that there are plugins that add this, but I'm still dipping my toes into gVim and I'm not sure I want to load random plugins before I understand what they do. I'd prefer to use something built in to vim, but if it doesn't exist it doesn't exist. What should I do to accomplish my goal? If it involves a plugin, do you use it and how well does it work?

• Nagios: turn off service checks/display on down hosts

  I want to to tweak nagios in such a way that all checking stops (with services not displayed, or displayed as unknown) for any down node. Said differently I only want to see one alert for a down host instead of 1 (down) + n (1 for every service). Note that I am interested in service display/status, not only in turning off notifications. Rationale: we use the nagios firefox/chrome plugin to monitor status and nagios' behavior is too noisy giving readings like these (because every node has 20 services): 3 down, 1 unreachable, 4 warnings, 87 critical This means that the 7 critical services on up node (the problem is on the service) are swamped in a slab of red services which are critical only because they sit on a node that's down/unreachable. What I'd rather like to see is: 3 down, 1 unreachable, 80 unknown, 4 warnings, 7 critical Or even 3 down, 1 unreachable, 4 warnings, 7 critical I have looked in service dependencies but I did not fine a way to describe: "make all services on a alive-host dependen on the status of the host check". I found the problem discussed here, where one of the participants thought it was a nagios bug, and here where one of the participants thought it was "as designed". As things are, I am just interested in the effect, much less in the design philosophy. Note that this nagios is checking hundreds of nodes, so the maintainablilty of the solution is also important.   I have been tasked with setting up a distributed video-chat system built on XMPP. Currently my setup looks like this: Openfire (XMPP server) + JingleNodes plugin for video chat OpenLDAP (LDAP server) for storing user information and allowing directory queries Kerberos server for authentication and passwords In testing with one set of machines (i.e. only three), everything works as expected: I can log in to Openfire and it looks up the user information in the OpenLDAP database, which in turn authenticates my user with Kerberos. Now, I want to have several clusters, so that there is a cluster on each continent. A typical cluster will probably contain 2-5 servers. Users logging in will be directed to the closest cluster based on geographical location. Something that concerns me particularly is the dynamic maintenance of contact lists. If a user is using a machine in Asia, for example, how would contact lists be updated around the world to reflect the current server he is using? How would that work with LDAP? Specific questions: How do I direct users based on geographical location? What is the best architecture for a cluster? -- would all traffic need to come into a load-balancer on each one, for example? How do I manage the update of contact lists across all these servers? In general, how do I go about setting this up? What are the pitfalls in doing this? I am inexperienced in this area, so any advice and suggestions would be appreciated.

• IIS 7: launch unique site instance per host name

  Is it possible to configure IIS 7 so that a single site with multiple bindings (or wildcard bindings) will launch a unique instance for each unique host name? To explain why this is desirable, we have an application that retrieves its configuration from a remote system. The behaviour of the application is governed by this configuration and not by the 'web.config'. The application uses its host name as a key to retrieve the configuration. Currently it is a manual process to create an identical IIS site for each instance of the application, differing only by the bindings. My thought, if it were possible, is that it would be nice to have one IIS site that effectively works as a template for an arbitrary number of dynamic sites. Whenever it is accessed by a unique host name a new instance of the site would be launched, and all further requests to that host name would go to that instance just as though I had created the site by hand. I use IIS regularly, but only for fairly straightforward site hosting. I'd like to know if this could be configured with vanilla IIS 7, but would also welcome answers that require a plugin or 3rd party product. Programming/architectural suggestions about changes to the app wouldn't really be appropriate for serverfault.

• Several web applications on a single port

  We're developing an online browser-based game. The game itself is a plugin in the web page, that uses TCP connection to a game server, and also sends http requests to "content server" web application. This makes 3 servers total: the site itself, game server and content server. Site and content server are IIS web applications, game server is a custom application communicating over TCP with proprietary protocol. While the game is in beta stage, all these servers are physically hosted on a single machine, and distinguished by ports. For example, website is game.example.com:80, game server is game.example.com:34285 and content server is game.example.com:50000. This works OK most of the time, but some of our players have ports other than 80 closed. Is there any way to make all these application work through port 80, while still having them one one physical server? Maybe using different sub-domains?   I'm running WordPress 2.9.1 from a Mac running 10.6.3. WordPress is installed to the /Library/WebServer/Documents folder. WordPress has a feature called Auto Update. Clicking an auto update button will download and install updated versions of the WordPress software, or third-party plugin tools. It's a convenient way to keep things up to date. WordPress uses FTP to download the files. I've enabled FTP and set up a user account and opened the requisite ports in my firewall for FTP traffic. This doesn't seem to be enough for my self-hosted installation, though. I'm sure this feature was originally designed for someone who has access to a remote shared webserver, and that it's merely a configuration challenge related to the FTP setup. I feel that if I can adjust the initial directory that the FTP service presents to the AutoUpdate feature, everything else will work properly. So, my question is, how do I adjust what folder is presented when a given user connects to a Mac running 10.6.3 via FTP?
